Question, ConcernSpeaking with some teachers, they say making new hires needs to be a huge priority. Are there qualified applicants at this time for any of the science openings?Yes, there are quallified applicants for Science posiitons on campus. By March 1st both positions should be filled. We have submitted a reference for hire for one position and a change of assignment for a teacher on campus to move into the other position.
3
QuestionMy 6th grader has no science teacher. She wants to be a scientist. What is the plan for these kids to keep up and be ready for next year? We plan to have 2 candidates moving into these positions by March 1st but in the mean time, our Science coach will upload content students should be learning, visit with classes, and maintian the gradebook for these classes. Another 6th grade Science teacher will be helping with grading, updating the grade book, and office hours to keep student on track.
4
QuestionOur kid told us yesterday that Ms. Warshauer is leaving at the end of next week. So that's another long time teacher who's leaving. Are there other teachers who have resigned in the past few weeks?no, she is the only one. Her leave date is not until March 20th and we have already found an experienced and accomplished candidate to fill the vacancy. He also has 20 years of successful experience and will be able to fill in on the days she is absent to build familiarity with the classes, then take over fully when she leaves.

ConcernThis update meeting was entirely unsatisfactory. I do not feel hopeful about the future of this campus, especially considering it does not seem like behavioral problems have been addressed, as well as the lack of qualified substitutes in core classes. I feel less confident about Kealing MS than ever after this meeting Thank you for sharing your concern and your view. It is unfortunate you feel it was unsatisfactory. We will continue to execute the steps of the action plan and make other necessary adjustments along the way. Behavioral concerns have been addressed and we will continue to work on it because behavior is just one way students act out deeper emotions. We have our counselors on board and are still working to help students restoratively deal with these emotions in a more productive manner.
6
Question, ConcernWhat is going on during lunch? Students do not have enough time to eat. What is being done to this situation? Also, the subs are being mean to good kids and affecting learning. We have not received any concerns about students needing more time to eat during lunches. Students are allotted 30 minutes for lunch and on most days the line moves pretty quickly. Students have time to both eat and socialize. None of the adults on campus should be mean to any of the kids on campus. Feel free to email me if you would like to discuss the specifics of our lunch processes.

QuestionIt is imperative that 6th grade families receive an update on the science program - we have been fortunate to have a teacher this year, but I'm not sure the curriculum standards are being followed - a lot of topics other families are discussing have not been covered in this class. What can the district do to support?Update: We have 2 candidates to fill the postions. One will be a new hire the other is currently special education teacher on campus who has 9 years of experience. By March 1st both positions should be filled. Our Science Coach is assuring the standards are being covered. AISD can expedite the hiring process (has already been requested) .

QuestionIn the PTA meeting it was a massive concern voiced the teachers are leaving and saying they will leave if the approach of the Principal does not change. Can you be more specific on what processes they want changed? You mentioned lesson plan requests and data protocols. How are you representing Kealing teacher requests to the district and advocating for Kealing? I advocate for Kealing in Principal's meetings monthly and Secondary Principal's Meetings as they occur. On many occassions I have created google spreadsheets of teachers concerns before meetings to make sure I get answers to concerns and questions but also to make sure I speak as a voice for our school. Most recently this action was completed for the December 15th Principal's round table. I make sure the collective voice of our school is heard when I meet with district representatives. Here is a document created specifically to the concerns teachers reported in their presentation to me on Monday 2/7/2022. Kealing Concerns . There are some items I understand and have agreed to make adjustments, others I have offered clarifications, and there are some I have questions about because I do not recall the instances.

Question, ConcernMy student is in one of the 6th grade science classes with a sub since winter break and recently took a test that illustrated that they are not getting the material taught that they need to be successful this year in science. I would hate to end the year with deficiency in the subject that could potentially set our kids up for failure in 7th grade. Is there a way for parents to help our kids catch up in this class and make sure that they are receiving the information that they need? The pacing of Science classes are at Kealing Middle School are not the same as the pacing throughout AISD. Students are covering appropriate standards in our classes. Ms. Lee, 6th Grade Science Teacher and The Science Instructional coach Zoe Jones are assuring students receive appropriate material.
10
QuestionI’ve appreciated the recent emails from Ms. Jones about supporting our kids in science. I wonder if there’s some kind of parent workshop we could have to help us support our kids in science. Practically, it doesn’t seem like we will have a teacher anytime soon, (despite what I know are very best efforts!) so I just feel a bit lost trying to be a science teacher. I’m game but could use some help! Thank you Thank you for your willingness to help but at this time I am not aware of a parent workshop to help parents support their students in science. I will reach out to our CARES department to see if there are workshops available. We plan to have both sixth grade science positions filled by March 1st. In the mean time our instructional coach will continue to provide content for the classes and Ms. Lee is also available for office hours.
11
ConcernMagnet director hiring and empowerment Thank you for sharing your concern, we have a timeline in place we will share with parents that starts with a profile development meeting February 21st and final candidate recommendation by March 11th, 2022.
12
QuestionAre we reaching out to teachers and staff who resigned because of the school climate? Because if the changes taken now are profound they may want to come back. Yes, we are reaching out teachers who have resigned. Only two listed job dissatisfaction as their reason for resignation.
13
StatementAfter a very concerned PTA meeting last week and almost 300 people showing up again. There was no time for questions and concerns being raising and parents are feeling you are purposely cutting us off.
Hello, the principal's coffee on February 10th was 2 hours long and the coffee on February 17th was an hour long. I am a community servant and therefore always available for conversation and questions where feasible. Principal's coffees are just one forum. I will gladly give you a call if you have further questions or concerns.
14
StatementI want to thank Mr Wilson, Ms Palmer and all teachers for working together to respond thoughtfully to the current education crisis. I know that there are situations affecting Kealing that come from the national, state and district level that are out of your control. However it appears you are listening and working to address for the issues that can be resolved within Kealing. So, thank you for that. I am a 6th grade parent ( but also have college age kids that went to Kealing). I want to help the school and and am happy to work with students esp in Science 6…if there is a team of parents that can be set up to guide the classes in small groups, I am willing to participate. I understand that the Aisd sub process is backed up. I am happy to help on a volunteer basis without pay, but can’t take on an ongoing full time sub job or an entire class.Hello, thank you for our kind words. You are most welcome and we really appreciate you offering to volunteer. The team of parents sounds like a great idea, we are expecting the positions to be filled by march 1st but I will consult with our Science instructional coach to see if there is a way we can coordinate this efffort.
15
ConcernScience teacher for 6 grade. Substitute qualityHello, thank you for sharing your concern. We are actively working to fill both positions by March 1st, 2022. We have 2 substitutes that should work fine in these classes with adequate support.
16
StatementThank you for addressing the issues. Please support the teachers. If Kealing Magnet drops it’s quality, we’ll be moving out of the district. Let us know what to lobby AISD and state for. Hello, thank you for your statement. we will most certainly support the teachers. We will keep you posted on what to lobby for and thank you for choosing Kealing Middle School and Austin ISD.
17
QuestionI’m urgently concerned about how the 6th grade science teacher vacancies are being handled. I learned yesterday from my daughter that the amazing (and very qualified) parent sub for Ms. Haendel is leaving after this week. Sounds like she had issues with behavior that made it impossible for her to stay. This is devastating and extremely worrisome. The science instructional coach is currently supporting 6 vacancies/new teachers. Meanwhile the kids are about to start their sound instrument project, which they absolutely need guidance to do (I remember from when my 8th grader did it). My question: What is the status of the hiring process for the 6th grade science teachers? I haven’t heard any sense of urgency from the school about this. It’s only February…months of school left. Hello, the status of the hiring process for the 6th grade Science position is almost complete. We have interviewed for over 3 weeks and provide updates weekly about the status of the hiring of these positions. We have found our 2 candidates and have submitted the necessary paper work to get these teachers on board. Both teachers should be hired/transitioned by March 1st, 2022.
18
Question, ConcernWhat is the campus doing to keep Ms. Johnson? She announced her departure to the kids in her current classes. She plans to leave at the end of this school year. She is invaluable to the magnet program and runs Cyber Patriot. What are you doing to retain this formidable person? Do you plan to ask her to mentor whomever gets hired for her position whenever it's time for her to leave? It is unconscionable that the school is willing to let go of such a wealth of knowledge and experience. Hello, this employee has not completed any paperwork stating she will not return next year. We have discussed next year and the possibility of grooming/ assisting in the hiring process if she decides to leave. We are willing to do what it takes to keep her if she has conditions to stay.
19
Question, ConcernCan you explain what is happening with the magnet director hiring position? Last talk, Mr. Wilson said we were close to filling the position, a parent disagreed, and now it sounds like the job description is being rewritten. Why?Hello, thank you for raising this question. The job description is not being rewritten. We had a candidate we thought would be good to fill the position but decided to wait a little longer to allow more time for other candidates to apply. At the time we had 17 applicants, today we have 27 applicants. We decided to start from the beginning to make sure we had the best candidate for the position.
20
ConcernI am very concerned about students in core classes who are missing permanent teachers. Students should not be teaching themselves math or science. It sounds like it hasn’t been communicated to those parents what the plan is or how the children’s grades will be addressed. It seems like Ms Reynolds left as a qualified, long term sub because of disciplinary issues. Surely there is some way to address the discipline issues short of her leaving. Hello Andrea, thank you for sharing your concern. We have interventions in place to create an optimum learning environment for all students, this includes addressing the challenges we know are present.
21
ConcernI am very disheartened that Ms. Warshauer, an 18-year math teacher in Kealing is leaving. She is the best math teacher according to my son. Could you do anything to keep her from leaving? Hello, I will speak with her this upcoming week to see if there is anything we can do to keep her.
22
Question, Concern, StatementDuring the meeting last week it was explicitly stated that a search had been underway for a replacement Magnet Director. In the presentation today you made it clear that is not the case. That there is not a profile, interview questions, etc.

How can you explain the discrepancy? On the surface it seems like blatant lies, but I want to give you a chance to provide a detailed response.

In addition to that response, please provide me a written statement on your desired future Magnet program. There are MANY parents who are heavily considering withdrawing from the program because neighborhood schools are outshining the **MAGNET** program in terms of academic consistency, culture, teacher retention, and safety.

If we are to believe that this program can be salvaged, we need to know that the program is being supported financially as well as in practice! (full loop to the beginning...how can a program be supported if the administration wasn't even actively recruiting a Director???)

I appreciate your time and effort. I look forward to a detailed response.
Hello, thank you for reaching out and giving me an opportunity to reply to this concern. We have been looking for a magnet director. We interviewed over the course of 3 weeks and interviewed at least 6 highly qualified candidates. We found one we really liked but didn't feel comfortable having this candidate go into the final round alone for such a critical position on our campus. This led us to wait a bit longer for more qualified candidates to surface. At the time we interviewed we had 17 applicants today we have 27 applicants to choose from and are scheduling interviews for March 4th, 2022. The week of February 21st, we are starting from the beginning to build our profile for the magnet director and create the activities and questions we want candidates to complete and answer during interviews. We hope to recommend a candidate for hire by March 11th, 2022. My desired future for the magnet program is to continue to build on the excellence this program is known for by working hard to refine systems of recruitment to acquire more diversity and mentoring for incoming students. We will continue to provide the robust curriculum and even develop more creative courses for scholars to explore all of thier gifts and realize their potential. To develop this vision, we must also support and create opportunities for our teachers to develop and grow as well.
23
QuestionIt seems like most of the frustration is coming from parents of magnet students who aren’t getting the magnet experience they expected. I’m curious whether most of the disruption has to do with management of the magnet program (from the District to the individual teachers)? Are the non-magnet students and parents experiencing the same disruption and discouragement? My son is a general transfer 6th grade student & I haven’t been aware of a dire situation with his teachers — in fact, he told a friend yesterday that science is is favorite subject! I guess I’m also curious (not that you can answer this, just something I’m aware of and looking out for) to what degree there is power & privilege playing out with the magnet parents (and teachers & admin) who were losing some of the exclusivity of the magnet program by opening up the classes to the non-magnet students. —But was it actually benefitting those students??—Hello, thanks for your question. There is quite a bit of change in AISD and the world. Change makes people fearful. Losing a teacher mid year can be traumatic for anyone especially children and I think that is where most of the anxiety is coming from. Some of the teachers who have left taught in both programs, so its likely academy parents are experiencing the same disruption as the magnet parents.

ConcernI see that the action plan lists several action items with "work with" or "collaborate with" -- but there is no follow up action item/deadline for the deliverable that's being "worked on." Each of these items needs a separate deliverable. Each "focus area" needs a list of deliverables at the end. That list of deliverables also needs to communicate how/with whom the deliverable will be shared.

Please see:
- "conduct meeting with leadership team to discuss possible solutions to the climate and culture problem on campus" -- but no deliverable/deadline for a solutions plan (which itself needs implementation deadlines)
- "conduct meeting with leadership team to discuss possible solutions to the climate and culture problem on campus" -- but no deliverable/deadline for a solutions plan (which itself needs implementation deadlines)
- "collaborate with instructional coaches to provide campus wide professional development based on campus needs" - but no action item/deadline for actually providing the professional development
- "work with counselors and administrators to review discipline data to determine specific support plans for students and staff as needed" - but not action item/schedule for completing support plans (assuming this schedule will need recurring deadlines given the "as needed" nature)
"collaborate with counselor and instructional coach to create a well defined protocol for newcomer students" - but no action item/deadline for finalizing and implementing the protocol
Hello, the first two events listed have already occurred. The information gathered from these meetings drove the creation of the action plan. The next three events mentioned are on going processes and therefore won't have a time line. Improving our campus' climate won't include one time fixes, it has to be on going processes, then it becomes a part of our culture. It will be the way we do things. The newcomer protocol has been completed and will be shared with the campus on Monday. That process is also subject to change as we identify other methods to ease this transition for students.
25
RequestPlease share the entries submitted on this form to help ensure that the action plan is revised as needed to reflect questions/comments.Yes, I will
26
QuestionHow/when will revisions to the action plan be shared, so that we can insure that the action plan is updated to reflect these questions/comments (provided that the questions/comments are relevant and constructive)? The action plan will be included as a part of our campus' improvement plan, revisions and updates can be viewed at any time.
27
QuestionHow will the implementation status of the action plan be shared? What will the schedule be for sharing implementation updates on an ongoing basis? Action plan updates will be shared at upcoming Principal Coffee Meetings
28
QuestionWho will decide if an action item has been effectively implemented? The action plan is designed to improve the campus climate and culture for both the students and teachers. Teachers and my direct report Director Coburn will determine the effectiveness of the action plan's implementation.
29
QuestionWhat interventions will be triggered if action items aren't implemented in a timely and effective manner? Rest assured the action items will be implemented in timely and effective manner.
30
QuestionFor the "robust third party survey in March" will this be a third party that is outside of AISD? Will it be a School Climate Survey such as what is referenced here: https://safesupportivelearning.ed.gov/school-climate-improvement

Will the results of the survey be made available before the end of the school year?
Will the school responses to the survey results be made available before the end of the school year?
Hello, Austin ISD has contracted a third party entity and will share the results of the survey before the end of the school year.
31
QuestionWhat is your long-term vision for the magnet program--meaning in, say, five years, what would you like it to look like? What qualities, competencies, and values are you looking for in a magnet director? Thanks!Hello, in the next five years I would like the magnet program to build off the excellence it is known for and have an even more robust curriculum with courses that allow students to explore their creativity and special gifts. I envision more diversity and a more defined mentoring program to help students make that elementary to middle school transition even more successfully. In the next magnet director I'm looking for someone who has a strong background in Math, Science, and technology. The next magnet director must have a desire to grow and learn, be a strong, competent leader who can motivate both highly motivated students and polished teachers to be their absolute best selves and even step out of their comfort zones to allow for more growth. . The next magnet director should be a visionary, someone with equity, diversity, and inclusiveness at the forefront of decision making. This individual must also be a strong collaborator who connects with the parent community as well.
32
QuestionThank you so much for the quick and detailed update on the action plan. I appreciate the transparency and was encouraged to hear about the steps toward more distributed leadership and collaborative problem-solving. I have several follow-up questions:

- Can you clarify if the third-party survey to be done in March will be conducted by the district or by an entirely external entity?

- What is the campus doing to keep the teachers who announced they would leave at the end of the year? Is there outreach being done to check in specifically with teachers about whether they plan to stay next year and to address any issues that would support retaining them? (Especially ahead of the 3/11 AISD deadline for irrevocable notification of intent to leave, this feels like a priority!)

- Can you address the magnet director position? Why and when was the search stopped? What is the planned change in the profile of the magnet director position?

- Would it be possible for parents to do science tutoring hours after school for sixth graders? In particular, Tuesday and Thursday both used to have science office hours, but with the current vacancies, maybe those could be science tutoring hours led by qualified parents?

- Can the compiled questions and answers from these forms please be shared publicly? I definitely understand why we can't open up Zoom sessions for hours of parent questions, but I hope we can still all learn from reading the questions and responses.

Thank you again.

Hello, thank you for your question and attendance at our meetings. I do not have information about the third party survey at this time but should be able to offer more information at our Principal Coffee meetings while providing action plan updates. When we are notified teachers will leave, we meet with teachers to see what can be done to keep them. At this time we have not received any official communication of which teachers will leave after this year, but we are currently asking teachers about their intentions for next year to see what can be done. The search for a magnet director never stopped, we paused interviews to allow more applicants to apply. At the time of pause there were 17 applicants, today there are 27. We are starting from the beginning to have a more collaborative profile, and to work through the process required for such a critical position on campus. Yes, parents are welcome to tutor after hours, we would just need to get them signed up in the APIE (Austin Partners In Education) system. We plan to have both positions filled by March 1st so this would be a good bridge.

Thanks and SuggestionsFirstly, thank you Mr. Wilson and Ms. Palmer for your time and attention to these matters. Today was my first time attending a Principal's coffee, as I am at work at the time they are held, but felt the urgency in the frequency of the last couple and meetings and tuned in from my desk. I thoroughly understand the challenges and difficulties your campus is facing, as the elementary campus I work has struggled similarly this year. I appreciate your taking time to place qualified teachers in the vacant positions.

In reading the chat during the meeting, I have a few suggestions...

Perhaps the parents of the 6th grade Magnet science class that is without a teacher may be deserving of their own meeting. It seems to be a hot topic and if there are things happening in the classroom that are factors to subs leaving/not wanting to pick up the position, a discussion may need to be had with the parents. If there are specific discipline issues, they need to be addressed and consequences rendered if students are not willing to correct behavior/take steps in the right direction.

I know there are many mental health concerns with many of our kids after these two+ years of Covid and what it has done to the school environment and grace needs to be given, but attending a Magnet program is a privilege and sometimes students/parents need to be reminded of that. Perhaps students should be referred to counseling if they have continued behavioral issues. My 7th grader has voiced frustration at times in regard to behavior in the hallways, bathrooms, etc. so I know that they are all struggling.

If there are issues the campus is facing that are directly correlated to District decisions/policies, it would be helpful for the parent/staff community to be made aware of what those are so that we can contact those at the District level and our Board Members to voice our concerns and engage them to bring about better policies.

I read the Herald every week and appreciate the communication. Transparency in regard to vacancies and progress in hiring process could perhaps be included regularly. At the least, a big welcome to the new hires may be a nice addition (a pic and brief bio?), it affords the school community opportunity to see progress in filling positions, and gives us the opportunity to get to know them and meet the latest addition to the Kealing Community. My son is in the math class you spoke of in the meeting, and it would have been nice to receive something from the school/teacher when she was hired. Teachers introducing themselves to parents is important. It gives us a sense of personality, style and capability. For those positions that were open for a while, it would also be nice to get communication from the teacher assessing where the class is in regard to expections, then a plan to get kids caught up if needed.

In regards to long term sub positions that are not filled, would it be helpful for parents to petition the district to send district staff to fill the days that are not picked up?

Lastly, would it be possible to convert this form to a type of FAQ & A? I departmental meetings held by the district, SDM, for instance, they create a form similar to this, then compile it into a document they share with us. This could be helpful for folks who aren't able to attend the meetings, but along with the powerpoint/recording can have better context for what happened during the meeting and actions being taken/considered between them.

Thank you again for all you are doing. I know it has been a rough year, but I appreciate all you and the Kealing staff are doing. Those of us sticking it out in AISD are truly trailblazers and are here for the betterment of our schools and students.
Hello Ingrid, thank you for your entry. It is greatly appreciated. The 6th grade magnet position should be filled no later than March 1st. We have submitted a reccomendation for hire for a great candidate. Discipline and behavior are being addressed daily. We have already enlisted our counserors to support with students who have exhibited behavior that was less than favorable and assigned consequences with a learning component as well. I think the biggest concern teachrs had was the 6.5/8 teaching plan which has actually been ammended at this time so its no longer a concern. This form can be converted to a Q&A and shared publicly. We will continue to noitfy families of the new hires in the herald and via email.

Question(1) What is the targeted start date for the Magnet Director Position? Can you share the targeted timeline for this hiring process with parents?
(2) What are the current teacher vacancies at Kealing? Can this be shared and updated regularly with parents?
Hello Ashweeta, the magnet director timeline will be shared with families. Here is the timeline: February 21st, staff members will meet to create the magnet director profile. From Februrary 21st to March 1st the interview committee will be formed and work on questions and activities for the interviews. March 4th all day interviews of Magnet Director candidates. By March 11th, I will send a name to Director Coburn for final director hiring round. Kealing teacher vacancies and updates can be found here: KMS Vacancies

QuestionOn the teacher's presentation document, it stated that teachers do not feel safe. But it was unclear if that was a result of discipline problems, hostility towards LGBT+ groups, or the TikTok threat. I would like to know what is the underlying concern and how it was addressed. I feel like this specific and legitimate concern was not addressed specifically. I would also like much more clarity about the Magnet Director hiring process. I think a coffee or PTA meeting should address that specific issue with what has happened and how we are moving forward.Hello Ellen, Here is the magnet director hiring timeline: February 21st, staff members will meet to create the magnet director profile. From Februrary 21st to March 1st the interview committee will be formed and work on questions and activities for the interviews. March 4th all day interviews of Magnet Director candidates. By March 11th, I will send a name to Director Coburn for final director hiring round. Teachers named discipline as the reason they did not feel safe. There has been a rise in physical aggression naitonwide, we have experienced some of this as well.
36
QuestionWould you know why the previous Magnet Director search did not come to fruition? I had heard there was a candidate chosen. What instigated re-starting the search? Thanks for your time & work with our school!Hello Katy, we decided to pause the interviews but the search continued. We had a candidate we liked but wanted to be sure it was the best candidate so we decided to pause and allow time for more candidates to apply. At the time of the pause we had 17 applicants, today we have 27. The pause worked. We are now planning to interview all candidates on March 4th, 2022 and hopefully present one candidate to director coburn by March 11th.

ConcernDear Principal Wilson,
As a parent of a magnet 6th and magnet 8th students, I am very concerned about the future of the school and of the magnet program. As a substitute, I see first hand how students without certified teachers are left to their own devices. In Science 6th, only Ms Lee's students passed their unit test this past week. Our kids are falling behind. Students without teachers are not getting a "robust learning experience". With more teachers leaving, who is going to teach content? Too many students are self-teaching right now. 20min (or less) of BLEND content per class is not enough. I wish you would address this during Principal Coffees and/or PTA meetings: concrete updates to reassure parents.
On a side note, I just saw I was removed from my upcoming sub jobs at Kealing with no explanation. I'm wondering if it's because I'm vocal about the problems at school. I only want the best for all students, because they deserve the best, and they are not getting that right now. I never thought I'd have to worry about my kids' education while at Kealing.
I sincerely wish you success, and success for all.
Respectfully,
Emmanuelle
Hello, thank you for sharing your concern. We are not planning to lose more teachers and we will fill the vacancies we currently have . Both Science positions should be filled by March 1st. We have found a candidate we beleive will be a great teacher for the class you subbed for and are moving a teacher who's currently on our campus to the other Science position. She taught the class last year, so I know she will do a great job. As discussed in our conversation Friday morning, you were not moved becuase you are vocal about problems in our school. We discussed, you could still cover the assignment you had on Friday if you could make it and the asisgnments for next week were already taken, so it was an accident you were placed in those. We appreciate you helping out on our campus.

StatementDear Mr. Wilson, I've attended a few meetings lately to try & learn a bit about the staff complaints and what's going on at KMS. I'd like to start by saying that I know a FRACTION of the details I'd need in order to make any kind of sound judgement about what's happening inside KMS, so I'm not casting judgement. I've barely stepped foot in the building (other than a few basketball games). I don't like to jump to conclusions without having as much info as possible from ALL sides, and I certainly don't like or need to participate in a social media style pile on. It sounds like some staff members have brought complaints to you. I support our teachers and I support you. I also support you and your staff addressing problems together. Again I have no idea what's happening, but from where I stand, it seems like you are taking responsibility for your part and you're actively trying to make amends. I don't understand why this has mushroomed into a schoolwide process. I understand our kids are impacted by staffing shortages and low staff morale, but is it necessary for parents - who are not KMS employees - to get involved in this? I know that KMS is not unique in experiencing pandemic stress, employee burn out, mass exodus of workers and an overall devaluing of public education and educators. It's nationwide. I appreciate you taking responsibility for your part but I hate to see you take on the burdens of the country and the pandemic. I am wondering if two, (or maybe a few) different issues are being conflated here and I wonder if you're being blamed for things that are out of your control. I'm curious about parent worry that the KMS magnet program will disappear, despite statements to the contrary. I think this is a dog whistle and I think some magnet parents support equity in theory but not in practice. I disagree with the sentiment that magnet kids deserve/need special education level staffing (as suggested during CAC today). I have appreciated the few times I heard you remind magnet parents that you're the principal of an academy too and that KMS has two programs, not just magnet program. As an academy parent, this hyper magnet focus is really tiring. The division between magnet and academy is longstanding and now that I'm a KMS parent, I see it and experience it and it's deeply off-putting. Sorry, I digress. I just want to offer my support and say that I see you doing what you can to improve (don't we all have work to do on ourselves??) and as an outsider, I appreciate your effort, time and ALL the meetings you are hosting. I wish you and your staff constructive conversations, health, and peace. I hope you are taking care of yourself too. Hello, thank you for sharing your statement. I appreciate your support and wish for us to have constructive conversations to get to the root of the problems. We will work together to imrprove our campus climate and culture because its whats best for our students. Thank you for your presence at meetings and your input. We will right the ship and end this year on a high note.
