server instance
Satchel Commons (shared server instance)CASE Network onlyWith dedicated hosting, your agency has its own dedicated Satchel server instance that you completely control. Shared hosting is on Satchel Commons, a shared-tenancy Satchel instance maintained by CGLT. The CASE Network only option is for agencies that cannot yet allocated dedicated funds for CASE hosting. These agencies can still partner with CGLT to ensure that frameworks available on CASE Network only are accurate sources of truth for their agency’s standards; these agencies can also partner with CGLT to author new frameworks on CASE Network and align frameworks to ELD standards (see below).
3
Annual cost$24K*$6K*$0CGLT’s current standard price for state agencies is $24K for a dedicated instance and $6K for a “patch” of Satchel Commons. *We can work with smaller agencies to reduce their cost. There is no annual cost for an agency to work with us to validate their agency’s frameworks on CASE Network: CGLT is able to cover basic CASE authoring costs for many frameworks through revenue collected from ed-tech suppliers who register for access to CASE Network, and via funds generously provided by special CASE Network Sponsors.
4
Web domain for your agency’s standardsagency domainxx.satchelcommons.comcasenetwork.1edtech.orgWith dedicated hosting, you can choose any domain/subdomain to point to your Satchel instance (e.g. https://alabamastandards.org). With shared hosting, the url for your agency standards will be a subdomain of satchelcommons.com (e.g. https://ky.satchelcommons.com). With CN only, your frameworks are available from casenetwork.1edtech.org only.
5
Customize Satchel
“look and feel”
extensive branding optionslimited branding optionsxWith a dedicated instance, you can customize the site logo and color scheme; organize frameworks into custom categories; and even change what the site is called (e.g. “SuitCASE” for Georgia DOE). With shared hosting, your agency name will appear next to the Satchel logo in the top-left corner of the window, and visitors to your subdomain of Satchel Commons will see your frameworks only. With CN only, your frameworks are available on CASE Network alongside frameworks from all other agencies.
6
Option to use agency server to host CASE dataxxWith a dedicated instance, you can host the Satchel application and database, including all CASE data, on an agency-controlled server, or CGLT can supply a dedicated AWS server for your instance (the CGLT cost is the same for either of these options). Satchel Commons and CASE Network are both shared-tenancy AWS servers managed by CGLT.
7
Mirroring on CASE NetworkAll agencies’ frameworks are mirrored on CASE Network, which aggregates standards data from every agency in the US.
8
Standards browsing functionality (view, search, pin, print, etc.)Satchel’s great tools for browsing standards, including the ability to search, pin, and print, as well as the optimized display for mobile browsing, work exactly the same for all options.
9
Export/download standards, via spreadsheet, CASE JSON download, CASE API, and other specialized export formats (e.g. Canvas)√*With a dedicated instance or a patch of Satchel Commons, standards can be exported or downloaded by anyone, at no cost and without the need to register or sign up, from your agency’s Satchel domain. *For CN Only, public agencies (e.g. school districts) can apply for free registration to access these export and download options from CASE Network.
10
Create, edit, review, and revise frameworks; archive/restore and track changes√*review onlyBasic Satchel tools for creating, editing, and revising frameworks, including the ability to archive framework versions and restore or track changes from archives, are available to agencies using either hosting option. *However, as noted below, agencies using Satchel Commons have a limited number of editorial users, and do not have access to certain advanced editing interfaces and workflows. For CN Only, agencies are generally limited to being able to review frameworks created by CGLT.
11
One-time cost for CGLT coding and support for new subject frameworks$1.5K (avg*)$2K (avg*)$3K (avg*)As described above, Satchel includes all the tools users of a dedicated or shared instance need to convert existing frameworks to CASE format yourself. But if you need help getting started, or if your agency is using the CN Only option, CGLT can work with you to quickly, accurately, and affordably convert your existing standards frameworks from any starting format (PDF, spreadsheet, Word, etc.) into CASE format. We can provide this service at a discounted rate if your agency is paying an annual dedicated or shared hosting fee. *Note that the exact cost for converting a standards framework varies widely depending on a) the number of standards in the framework, b) the complexity of the document structure, and c) the source files we are given to work with. We have listed here the average price for a typical K-12 Social Studies or Science framework.
12
New subject frameworks included in annual cost21With a dedicated or shared instance, CGLT coding for 2 or 1 (respectively) “typical” frameworks are included in the annual fee. (Note that “all of our state CTE standards” is NOT a “typical” framework!)
13
One-time cost for CGLT coding and support for supplemental information in frameworks$1K (avg)$1.5K (avg)2K (avg)Many agencies code supplemental information right alongside the core standards in their CASE frameworks. Examples include “Unpacking the Standards”, “Evidence of Student Learning”, and “Performance Level Descriptors”. CGLT must charge extra for the work of coding this type of information, but including it in your CASE frameworks can be invaluable to educators.
14
One-time cost for supporting alignment of content standards to WIDA or other ELD standardsIncluded in annual costIncluded in annual cost$500/subjectCGLT can also provide functionality and support for aligning state content standards to WIDA or other ELD standards. Once completed, these alignments can be viewed by content teachers to aid instruction, and can be exported for submission to meet federal requirements. This functionality and support is included with the annual cost for dedicated and shared instances; for CN Only, the one-time cost for this support is $500/subject (so $2K for the four core subjects).
15
Public review available for new frameworks and WIDA alignmentsxDedicated and shared hosting agencies can take advantage of Satchel’s functionality for opening frameworks in development up for “public review”, which allows any user, without signing in, to use Satchel’s commenting functionality to anonymously submit feedback on standards; this feedback is viewable by framework editors only.
16
Ability to create framework “sandboxes” for framework revisionsxxWith a dedicated instance, agencies can use “sandbox” copies of frameworks that are already published to make revisions (e.g. fix typos or make other adjustments to existing standards or include standards for newly-introduced courses). Once revisions are complete and have been reviewed, all changes in the sandbox can be merged with the published framework all at once, allowing for a seamless revision process.
17
User account managementUnlimited number of user accountsLimited to 20 user accountsLimited to 8 user accountsUnder either plan, standards can be browsed and downloaded by users without the need to sign in. However, users do need to sign in to edit or review draft frameworks, and access Satchel’s commenting functionality. With the CN Only and Satchel Commons options, agencies are typically limited to 8 and 20 signed-in users respectively. With a dedicated instance, agencies have full control over user management for their instance, and can grant access themselves to as many users as they wish.
18
Connect to agency SSO system for user signinxxWith a dedicated instance, CGLT can work with the agency to integrate with the agency’s identity management system (e.g. Microsoft, Google, SAML, etc.) to allow for SSO and “auto-provisioned” user account creation in Satchel (the cost to acheive this integration is included in the yearly fee, as long as it requires a reasonable degree of effort by CGLT). This is not possible with the Satchel Commons and CN Only options.
19
Ability to use commenting for PD purposesxxAs noted above, with a dedicated instance, all educators associated with the agency can have Satchel accounts. This allows educators to use Satchel’s commenting functionality for professional development purposes: teachers can use “comment groups” to collaborate on ideas for how they will approach teaching standards in their classrooms.
20
Usage reportingLimitedLimitedWith a dedicated instance, agencies can view detailed reports of who is accessing frameworks and how often frameworks are accessed. Reporting is limited for agencies using Satchel Commons and CN Only.
21
Access to Satchel crosswalking, resource alignment, and resource cross-alignment toolsxxSatchel includes AI-enhanced tools for a) creating “crosswalks” (full sets of associations relating all the standards in one framework to all the standards in another framework), b) aligning resources (e.g. assessment items, lesson plans, OER content, videos, etc.) to standards, and c) “cross-aligning” resources (starting with resource alignments to one standards framework, then using a crosswalk to assist in determining alignments to a new framework). With a dedicated instance your agency can utilize any of these tools, with CGLT’s support.
22
Ability to use Satchel “embedded mode” in other applicationsxxWith a dedicated instance, agencies can “embed” their Satchel instance into other agency applications (using an iframe and the JavaScript PostMessage protocol). Ask CGLT for examples of how this functionality can be used.
23
CASE consultations and Satchel training40 hours/year*15 hours/year*–*CGLT provides up to 40 and 15 hours per year of support for CASE consulting and Satchel training as part of the yearly cost for a dedicated instance or patch of Satchel Commons, respectively. *Additional CGLT support is available, for an extra fee, for agencies utilitizing any of the three options.
