So what do I do with my hands?

Also, anybody else match way stronger than their app and have major impostor syndrome? What are you doing to study and get ready? I don't know anything. I have trouble articulating a psych differential diagnosis, I don't know the difference between meds in the same class.
Lucky to have that problem

Can y'all whisper sweet nothings to me about why psychiatry is the best

...Does Yale still not have a permanent PD?
11
This got deleted earlier, and I want to add it back here. I'm still struggling with this and trying to find my peace, primarily the part of being away from family. I've been away from family for med school and was hoping to go back for residency, but that wasn't in the cards for me. I want to say as a small update, I am happy about the program I matched. I'm more doubting myself, and, more than that, scared of moving so far away from everyone I know. Below are my original thoughts for 2 weeks ago and the first two cells are from people who shared. Feel free to add or just read along if it helps you. Feel free to ignore as well, haha. Thanks!

Original Post: I don't wanna sound like I'm ungrateful, but I don't really have anyone else I can bring this up to. I matched my #2, which I'm excited for, but it's also away from my entire support system and I've never lived there. I feel secure in ranking it #2, but also I feel so hurt that I didn't match my top choice bc I did an away there, got glowing reviews and an LOR (brought up by many other places which is the only reason I know) and had the residents vouch for me that they loved working for me (they showed me what they said to their PD). I sent the LOI. idk, I did everything, and I'm mourning this program bc that's where all my family is and I wanted to go back to them. Did anyone else have this happen to them? How are you dealing with the emotions of it all? I feel like I did something wrong, but maybe others just did more things right and better? Idk. I've been suppressing this the past 2 days while family was here and now it's kinda hitting me. sorry for the long block of text. Thanks guys!
I feel similarly, also don't want to seem ungrateful because I *am* very very excited and grateful to go to my #2. But my #1 was my home program, and I invested so much time and energy into building relationships with faculty and mentors there, relationships with residents, etc. Comparing myself to my classmates who matched at my home program is really hard. It's sometimes difficult to hold both the gratitude and the disappointment.Had something similar happen, matched #2 and was somewhat shocked because my #1 was a mid-tier community program near family and my #2 was a top 20 academic program. I thought I had a good chance at #1 (because its my home program, I knew a lot of folks there, and I thought my interview went well) and that #2 was a complete reach, so match day was not at all what I expected. I'm super grateful for the opportunity but am sad about still not being able to move home and be with family, so I'm trying to make the most of it. Also hurts more because 3 people from my class matched at my #1, and its hard not to spiral about why they didn't want me.Glad to hear that you guys are feeling better about your next steps. Good luck!Feel similar. I worked in research after undergrad then did a post-bac masters program across the US and stayed there for med school. was really hoping to match back home and be near my support system. i had 2 interviews in my home state that I thought went well (they were praising me) then I dont match there. match in the same state ive been in the past 5 years. its really tough. also hard to not feel like "did I do something wrong" but the reality is the whole match is chaotic and unpredictable and you cant take anyones word for anything... Yet another one here -- family factor was out the window due to going to school far far away, but my partner and I are moving from all of our friends to a new place where we know no one, but it's a Very Famous T20 program. Prestige is great, but you can't hug it or eat it, and honestly we had a lot of worries ranking it as highly as we did. We've had a lot of surprise at falling past the "less competitive" places, plus apprehension at being without a pre-existing support system especially early in residency. Even knowing all these factors ahead of time, the strength of the feelings are really surprisingLmao stop whining drama queens, acting like it's solitary confinement for life lmao << I see the weirdos are back.<< feelings aren't always reasonable, hence them being feelings!Sheesh what a pity party! I for one am happy to match, don't bring others down with you!

for specialty transfers (going into psych as a pgy-2) when do interviews typically take place?i believe in the fallcan someone explain what this means? you started in a speciaty other than psych then transferred? how so, did you reapply to match or how does that work?

Is there a 2025 psych spreadsheet yet?You might be a tad bit early. I think the 2023 - 2024 psychiatry google sheet wasn't made until August 2023yes, let's let these folks graduate and start their jobs first. please!! lol

Y'all got any tea on the Orlando programs? HCA or NOVA? Really interested in applying to an away, but completely clueless if they're worth it Both are solid programs x1Do you live in Orlando? I wonder if medical students at UCF/NSUKPCOM would know more?I can speak to both. Osceola is HCA/UCF but you are employed by UCF. They rotate through Osceola, the Orlando VA, and Nemours. They do not have inpatient child units. Osceola county has a large hispanic population which the hospital serves. Med students rotate through Osceola and the Orlando VA. Dr. Mehta, PD, is great, as is Dr. Klapheke. << thank you!Nova is based out of the VA for many of their rotations, but spend a lot of time the first year in inpatient prisons around central florida (Lake county and Ocala). They do have inpatient child psych near seaworld. Med students do rotate on the VA services. << thank you!Nova doesn't offer aways to medical students :(< VERY important change to Osceola: they are no longer accepting Baker Acts (involuntary admissions) to the unit. The hospital is allowed to Baker act on other medical floors and they will see them as consults, but will not accept anyone to the unit anymore who is involuntary. not sure where this change came from. my guess is HCA wanting $$, but that's genuinely just my guess.

Can someone pretty pretty pretty pretty please update the discord link?

im so happy i didnt waste time sending thank you letters!! was definitely too burnt out at the end of each interview to do it lolthank u for sharing your truth :D << 😂😂😂Ditto! Was so paranoid it would negatively affect me but matched at a place I didn't send a TY letter to << 4xSame!!!! Did not send post-interview ty emails, did not send a LOI (mostly bc it took us a long time to decide on our #1 for a while), and couples matched to our #1 !!!

I see many PGY1 positions on resident swap for psychiatry. Is that as a result from this recent Match? Curious if I should sign up because I really do not like where I ended up.Lowkey was wondering the same thing...because seeing 80 people wanna swap positions is wild Does anyone know how successful is to swap with someone? Those are people who are current PGY1s, not incoming PGY1s. Don't waste your money on a subscription yetany updates on this?
21
Have people received welcomes/heard from their matched programs? Via e-mail or phone Phone call couple hours after matching on Friday. They just congratulated me and said onboarding paperwork was incoming on Monday! x2Email on the day saying welcome etc. we'll be in touch next week x1Haven't heard from anyone but hoping to this week because the way i have to move farther than i planned adds another level of anxiety :/ >>> update: Just heard from my Program! Recieved a welcome email on Fridayhavent heard anything from my program. is my spot revoked?got a call on friday and just got an email with things today~dumb Q: do you reply to these?my PD called me 3 times on Friday and left a voicemail, but I wasn't able to call him back because he called from the institutions like main phone and didn't leave an extension. 4th call today and an email now lol got an email an hour after match!I still haven't heard from my program...My email came minutes after match.

QTNA: Did LOIs make a difference?Yes I ended up matching at a place I sent LOI - i ranked them 3rd and ended up there << OP: interesting strategy, why didn't you rank them #1?Sent LOI to my #1, matched at my #2 who I didn't send anything to - not even a thank you email x 4Sent LOI to #1 and matched there x3 << me too << Same but not sure if it made a difference, I think I was just ranked high enough to matchSent letter of interest to #2 got an interview and matched (didn't send letter of intent). << this is confusing. did you send an LOI to the program you matched with or not? << No I didn't, Letter of interest is not letter of intent (both are called LOI though), but put it on here because it played a massive role in my match. << OP: makes sense, thank you!Nope, didn't match there but in retrospect i'm happy it didn't work. I loved the place I matched wayyyy more but was afraid to work hard and be far from family but now that choice is made for me and I'm so excited for what is to come.I wasn't able to send a letter of intent to my number one bc I was still figuring out what I wanted. But I still matched at my number 1 so I want to say it doesn't matter as long as ur vibes during interview was good :)sent LOI to my #1 and matched my #2, so I dont think (if it made a difference) that it was hugeSent LOIs to all 17. Matched at #4 <<< LOL < would've been fine with my top 10, the remainders I just wanted to hog lol < ………….. < bold thing to admit <bruh lol < WTAF at OPSent LOI to my top choice & matched! I think its program dependent on how much value they place in them. Also, it's only going to move you a few spots max up the rank list so it depends on where you would have fallen anyways
24
this is gonna be long shot request but is there anyone interested in swapping their detroit psych program for western michigan psych. im separated from my partner :/...Is swapping kosher?Swap is possible if you get permission from program directors I believe - need a good reasondoes western Michigan qualify for PSLF? <<<i believe so

But, PGY1 is going to be a lot of work no matter where you go. It's part of the journey we signed up for!<thank you for saying this.

Anyone else dissapointed with their match? I feel ungrateful that I'm not happy.. I matched near the bottom of my list (#11) at a program that I'm less than enthusiastic about. I wonder what went so wrong with my interviews that all seemed to have gone well.... x10same matched at my #10yep same. im shocked....x3completely feel this..incredibly grateful to have matched but very sad to move away from my support system and dogAnyone match really low on their list even after interviewing for top programs.. feeling grateful to have matched but in a location that I am not satisfied with, away from friends/family/partner/etc. everyone told me I'd match at my top 5 but I got into my 7th..Matched down to #7 and feeling devastated. I never ever would have expected I'd fall so low. It's at a program I am really disappointed and sad to have matched to. I know everyone probably feels this to some extend but I cannot help but feel jealousy and confusion that many of my classmates, who I know have weaker applications than me, ended up matching at much better places. Idk, I know it sounds conceited. But I am truly surprised. X8< feel the same exact waygrateful I am not alone in feeling this way. It is so much worse when all i see is people matching there #1's.. :(quit whining and be happy yo ass got a job. bunch of entitled brats smhSame, was completely blindsided, matched at my #7 across the country from family :(same ....just a little sad . Matched at a location I am not thrilled about but happy to match regardless as each day goes by.

Partner matched in St louis and I matched psych in Philly. Looking for someone to swap if possibleIronically, same. we can swap? im begging someone to swap me dmed on discordWhich Philly programswap? is that a thing?Trading my St. Louis for your PA residency.
31
Just because lay folks are asking me and I don't know how to explain it: What if you don't want to go to the program you matched at? I keep trying to explain it's binding, but then getting asked, well what if you change your mind.... what could possibly happen. Any answers or suggestions on ow to respond? It doesn't work like a typical job. You can choose to just not do it. But that is the only way into these positions. So if you choose not to comply with the match, you aren't getting another job. I think it's pretty obvious to most people why would work work a job you don't like vs be unemployed. < +1, maybe say something like "blacklisted" too? obv a bit of an exaggeration but not that far off the mark, especially if they don't get it?
32
Thoughts on Larkin residency? worth applying?DNRLark stands for lazy ass r__ kids. So no.
33
have programs learned who got matched to their programs?yes < I thought the school found out today but the program doesn't find out until tomorrow morning? I could be wrong yep, that secret LOI spreadsheet that everyone said PDs cross-reference (lol) is probably very active :-D let the Name and Shame games begin!programs also received the Match result (program/specialty) for all the applicants they ranked.< Wait, is this true? So if I dual-applied, wherever I match can see that? Wouldn't that burn bridges before I even start? >>in this scenario they see the final results, so the program you matched just sees that, but yeah i guess the programs you applied that were a different specialty can look back and see what you got into << yes, they will see the specialty and the program. not sure how you think that would burn a bridge? you applied based on your interests and if they wanted you they would've ranked you high. *shrug* < Yep, no need to freak out. It's your career, not theirs.< Yeah they can see where you matched. At the same time, I don't see why its not kosher for programs to know I dual applied. I mean if they had their way we would only be apply to their program in their specialty (1 program total lol). The way I see it is that even if you are applying to specalty A as your primary and specialty B as your secondary, its still on the program to compete with other programs to get you. I knew a couple of docs who made their rank list based on program rather than specality. They didn't care which one they got, just wanted to go to a good program. If programs see it this way, then its just a matter of the program beating out other programs in different specalities.

I'm bored and stuck at my medicine sub I! what's something yall are doing to take care of yourself this week? I for one am rewatching how to get away with murder loli walked up to starbucks! its BOGO drinks today >> starbucks supports g3nocide, y'all - support local! x1!!!the beachhhhi ordered emergency taco bell

Trying to understand how the algorith “favors applicants”. if a program is at the bottom of Person A’s list, and the top of Person B’s list, but the program prefers Person A over Person B, how does the algorithm reconcile that? If person A fails to match higher on their list, they will get preference over person B at that program. If there's only one spot, they could kick person B from that spot if they fail to match higher on their list. It's considere applicant favoring because it will try to match person A at all the programs at the top of their list before getting to that program that person B wants. So applicant A has many chances to match before ever competing with applicant B for the spot. << This explanation clears up the confusion for me. Thanks! Wow, it sounds like the algorithm is quite considerate, and not as mean as I thought, when you lay it out like thatAnother easy way to think of it is that if you don't match at a program at the top of your list, it falls off the list and all the rest of the programs move up one spot. So if Person A does not match at any of the higher programs, the higher programs will fall of the list and the progam in question will keep moving up until it occupies their top spot. Then, since both people now have the program ranked #1, Person A Matches since the program ranked them higher. I'm begging y'all to watch the nrmp matching video 😭 < fr how are you gonna put $250k+ and 1000s of hours into your residency application and then not watch the 15 minute video explaining the basics of how it works lol<<I'm begging y'all to realize that some people don't understand even after watching that video and still need extra help << Hi it me, I need extra help. ^_^

What happens if there are unfilled spots left in soap?Something called the scramble. Applicants can and do find positions outside of the match. Here's someone who successfully did that and explains the process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IS7rWpJk9Xs< thank you! good video. to be clear on terminology (since i didn't know this before) - SOAP is this week, scramble is thereafter/outside the Match? (not OP)Yes, Scramble happens as soon as SOAP is over. The "no contacting programs before they contact you" rule is out the window, and people frantically try to claim whatever is left after SOAP. Some programs will choose not to participate in SOAP. Also, just FYI, SOAP has only existed since 2011. It used to be nothing but The Scramble, and the whole week was chaos, and reportedly many times worse than SOAP. Many programs accepted one of the first people who could get through on the phone, so a lot of vacancies were filled within the first few hours after the original "You failed to Match" email. So people would spend hours calling, only to find the positions had already dried up.
37
Is it better to soap into prelim/TY or delay graduation? I have a few hours to decide. You have verified that your school will allow you to delay? If so, then the decision is yours. 2nd year spots in Psych will be very limited, but there will be some available. If you are set on Psych, I think your chances are better if you delay and graduate next year. That will give you time to practice interviewing, brush up on whatever things you think might help your app, and to APPLY MUCH MORE BROADLY next year. continued for readability: It will delay your earning years as a physician by one year at least. Alternatively, you can SOAP into a TY program (and your school may push you to do this so they can maintain their match rate...because any position counts). If you DO do a TY or prelim, chances are good that you will match into FM or some other specialty during your second year. Your chances of matching Psych will never be as good as they are during the year you graduate.Yes they will allow me to delay.DEpends, if you need research etc, it might be worth doing the delay. If you have red flags like LOA etc then it might be better to take the TY to prove you can handle residency, which would likely be their biggest concern x2you can also apply for PGY1 positions in psych after doing a TY so you're not limited to just PGY 2 psych positions! Could strengthen you app too with more clinical exposure/ residency experience and you have the option of both PGY1 and PGY2 spots which is pretty sweet. I soaped myself and was leaning towards a TYHowever, if you graduate and then finish a PGY-1-only program and apply to next year's Match to try to find a spot at a PGY1 Psych program, your chances of ever matching Psych fall to less than 50%. So take the "you could prove you can handle the rigors of residency" argument with a grain of salt. The actual stats tell the story clearly`
38
Why is it every year there is always some jackass that comes through and deletes these threads? Like did you not match and you just want revenge??
Nah, they've been doing it for quite awhile. People need lives. Why's that surprising? It's the internet. I'd be surprised if there weren't any toxic trolls. I'd think someone becoming a psychiatrist hopefully wouldn't be a toxic troll I guess << Exactly. << really? I feel like psychiatrists are weird people haha << Weird, sure, but not usually mean. At least in my experience. There's also a very good chance that the trolls aren't even psychiatry applicants. All the spreadsheets are compiled on the same post, so if people are going to troll, they could just do it on not their own specialty. I've heard of people trying to start fights on other spreadsheets for shits and giggles.

are we sure that programs find out on thursday at 2p? i got an automated onboarding type email from one of the programs i interviewed at, is it just coincidence? >> Was the email sent to your school (NRMP) email or your ERAS email? > was sent to my eras email (i used same email for nrmp too but its not my school email), but unfortunately that was the email i gave the program so i could keep track betteremail says "welcome to enterprise training! (my name) your registration is confirmed for HLP data integrity with OnBase Unity Client. To complete your REQUIRED eLearning prior to class click the link to access the training site...etc.." and its specific for a program <<< where in this email does it mention your program name? < the email it came from is an edu email of the program, and all of the links at the bottom that it wants me to click on are program links and it says to sign on with my program issued UN and password, and it has a help desk number with the area code of the programspoiler alert lol do you think? do the programs know yet?Happy to match but FUCK onboarding & paperworkHappy Match Day! lolWas this program your top choice? Guess you know where you're going hope you are happy with it! :D < it was my #3 but its close to home and i am grateful to match! :) < mazel tov, OP MD!Seems like an NRMP violation on their part? < but do programs even know yet is my questionAccording to NRMP site, students' medical school find out where they matched 8am on Thursday. Residency programs find out which applicants matched to their programs at 2pm on Thursday Let us know match day if it's the program hahaI'm so jealous This is bizarre, not sure why nrmp would lie about programs not knowing. Unless it was some mistake. I would say be careful for a phishing scam but this is very specific lol... Seems legit possibly. Just strange. I also received a similar type email from a different program. Trying not to read too much into it because I did a rotation there and it could have been sent to everyone in their system I guess < i wonder if its the same program as mine? is it a program in NY?Could it be that programs find out how far they fell in their ROL and this program matched all its top spots? Still bizzare but who knows.ill keep you guys updated on friday i guess. i did a rotation there back in october and got similar emails leading up to my rotation, so it was definitely from the program, (actually got 2 emails 40m apart on tuesday). i didnt get anything like that after the rotation and just thought it was strange to get it on match week. i was trying not to read into it but i have nothing better to do than read into it while impatiently waiting until friday loll< update us OP!!hi update! i matched at my #1 :) so i guess it was a coincidence
40
Before we found out where we match friday... anyone else want to post their rank list on the rank list tab?? :) <-updated mine x2BTW does the rank list page automatically update the rank tally? Too lazy to update that myself and not sure if im supposed to touch it manually< it does not

Any AMG's with good step scores and no red flags fail to match? I'm seein a lot of SOAPers and I'm wondering what the deal is. Or is it because of red flags or IMG status?Competition is the deal. Too many applicants, too little programs. It's only gonna get worsePeople are waking up to psych being a lifestyle specialty that both pays well on average and has the potential, if you work for it, to make very very large amounts of money. It's one of the only specialties where a fully remote practice is feasible and one of the only specialties that still has robust private practice opportunities. And now with younger people being more aware of mental health issues it is increasingly respected as a specialty. It's like Derm if derm allowed you to WFH if you wanted. IMGs are going to be almost entirely boxed out of the specialty in the next few yearsNo they're not going to be "boxed out," this whole notion of residencies being so anti-IMG is flawed. < The statistics for competitive specialties is clear. How many IMGs matched derm and anesthesia last year? The trend in psych is also clearly pointing down for IMG applicants and matching. It was 149 non-US IMGs matching into psych last year, lets see what it will be this year. I'm not saying this is good or bad btw, I am just saying what I think will happenUS MDs/DOs also go unmatched every year, the match algorithm isn't programmed to discriminate against IMGs. Non-us imgs can practice in their home country but choose to compete for spots here when space is already limited unless it's FM or IM. There is no logical reason why they should get preference over US grads. < I mean, many IMGs are more qualified than american MD/DO students. It's just that many more aren't. <<Hun, it's not the algorithm that discriminates agains IMGs, and nobody is saying it is. It's the programs and the people at the programs who discount IMGs in favor of US medical graduates. The data is clear on that point. Y'all have such a pro-img and anti-us sentiment it's ridiculous lmao < moreso its "pro good candidate", i wouldnt be worried about IMG competition if you aren't a poor applicant. No need to hand out "born in the USA" participation trophies :) < No need to spoonfeed imgs either :)This is the same preferencing argument that was had against DOs a decade ago. Now DOs and MDs alike are thriving! <-- This is real, DO bias is changing. I'm a DO but interviewed at several IVY programs which shocked me. I will admit I had a pretty extensive healthcare career before medical school though which I think was a large contributor and I had fairly high step 2 (not sure how much step factored in) < The DO bias is changing but it's definitely still there. As a DO I feel it on clerkships. The easiest way I explain to people the difference is DO = MD + OMM. You're not losing anything by being a DO, the OMM thing is an extra nuisance that comes with being a DO. Otherwise it's the exact same training as an MD. lmao "many IMGs are more qualified than american MD/DO students" < you think PDs are intentionally choosing less competitive IMG candidates, knowing they have to go through 10x as much employment nonsense due to Visas, just to spite americans? lol

was planning on being a future psych applicant... until i failed Step 2 3x and was dismissed :/ what would you all do in my situation? i'm mentally fine but i'm trying to figure out what i can do now career-wise that's still lucrative...idk how lucrative, but psychologist (PhD), psych PA/ NP x2or change gears, go to PA school and choose dermI heard somewhere about relationship coaching that was allegedly offering an extremely lucrative goal rate of ~$100+ an hour, full virtualY'all need to chill with the insults.
45
Anyone know how many psych SOAP spots are available or are people having to SOAP already DNR. <- My heart truly goes out to your guys. :(

Opinions on these programs? Which would you apply to? UColorado-Denver (research track); Brookdale (NY); SUNY Upstate Rural Track; Piedmont (GA); St Francis (GA); Akron Gen Med Ctr (OH); Campbell (NC) SUNY Upstate rotates their "rural track" sites each year - this year it's Watertown and Buffalo (wanna say there's one or two of each, not sure). You do vast majority of your training at Upstate in Syracuse with 2 months 1st and 2nd year each at the other site, plus clinic later years (I wanna say Buffalo is virtual clinic, Watertown you might have to drive to). I personally loved everything about Upstate as a program except mildly call-heavy (not too bad) and Syracuse isn't the most exciting city but is college town-y and fun because of that. Otherwise tons of electives and great exposure, family-like feel, good culture, etc. The big thing is just are you willing to be in Watertown or Buffalo for 5 years after. Does it say which location the open spot is for? I'm from Buffalo and like it - it's not the most exciting either but is the 2nd biggest city in NY (very much a suburban city). Watertown is a tiny little town in the middle of nowhere, 1 hr from Syracuse. My friends in Syracuse love it there but they're not really "city people". I tried to ask in my interview what happens if you do a "rural track" (FYI Buffalo is NOT rural) and then can't stay in that location afterwards for some reason, and they said they really don't know, it would be totally between you and the hospital you're signed on to work at bc the contract is just between you and them. Don't know anything about the other programs.Dont waste a token on SUNY Upstate Rural. The program requires you to work at that location for something like 5 years after you graduate at a "competitive salary" of like $200k. Not surprised they went unfilled. << How about don't delete other people's comments?! I made a comment in this box and you literally wrote over it. Also, wake up call, the people who are contemplating the Upstate Rural track did not match. If they want psychiatry, it's a guaranteed psych spot without having to play the game of finding a 1 year spot and reapplying. wow thank you all this is really helpful. why are people erasing comments that could be helpful for the folks SOAPing? weird < It's so dumb. There's a few trolls running around here deleting comments for fun. Ohio native here. Akron is wonderful, academic options, diverse population (near CLE), many of my friends in ohio are doing Psych in Akron and love it. Seems like a well rounded place, not sure about the diversity of opportunities of the program but its proximity to academics and good lifestyle feels like a fair balancethere is no non-compete clause for SUNY upstate rural tracks. I asked their residents. Also the salary for their rural track is like $289K or so not $200K flat." with "there is no non-compete clause for SUNY upstate rural tracks. I asked their residents. Also the salary for their rural track is like $289K or so not $200K flat. And if you do the Buffalo track you get state benefits on top of the state benefits you accrue during residency.<< great info! in that case...apply!

SUNY Upstate rotates their "rural track" sites each year - this year it's Watertown and Buffalo (wanna say there's one or two of each, not sure). You have to complete Peds residency first and then this is like another residency/fellowship which take 3 years to complete.<<< Beware, There's only like 5 of these programs in the countryI've heard of surgery residents transferring to psych during PGY2< same x2

If I decide to soap into a prelim med or transitional year, can I apply to PGY2 and PGY1?Someone deleted the comments on this thread... but the answer is yesI have an interview to today for a prelim at my home program. I hope to hear back from a TY in my home town also.I just got a call from a TY program. Good luck to those in SOAP
51
52
Question... If a program I interviewed at is SOAPing (assuming they ranked me), does that mean that I matched somewhere higher than that program on my list?yesHow do you know which programs are SOAPing?
53
I have a very specific question, hopefully someone can help lol. I applied to the couples match, my partner got a preliminary position and they already know the location. In the NRMP webpage, I can also see "program location" below the "you have matched" message, and it is same as my partner, but I was wondering if this could be his location and not mine.Couples matching requires a lot of extra back-end programming to make everything work due to the complexity. It might be showing that there as a bug or glitch. I would not make any plans or start celebrating until you can confirm it on Friday. If this were me, I would 100% ask my school dean and contact NRMP to understand what's going onI also couples matched with partner doing prelim but I don't see any location on the nrmp website. Can you screenshot? Is your partner partially matched - i.e., did he/she applied to at least one categorical position but only matched prelim? NRMP: "Partially-matched applicants and couple applicants whose partner did not match will have the city, state, and zip code of their matched program provided on their Match Home page in the R3 system when the Match status notification is released on Monday of Match Week." <<< this is it<< Thanks guys!! I ended up calling NRMP and they confirmed it is indeed my location. :)< Congrats?
54
list is accurate Colorado ? That's surprising x2 - competitive research track positions will sometimes go unfilled instead of taking anyone. they want to make sure its the right applicant x2
55
Didn't match. Feeling lost of what to do next. Not sure if I should soap or not. I have hours to do decide what to do next. Contact advisor, do the SOAP, get the interviews, then decide at the end of the week whether or not you want to accept any offers. Alternatively, take a moment, then decide what you want in your future, then contact advisor and get to work. Either way, I think the best 1st step is to get in touch with your advisor. x3Not matching is an awful , gut punch, existential crisis feeling. I did not match my first go at it. I was very selective geographically, and was again my second application cycle (but with a stronger application). I would say go for the SOAP. You can't lose anything at this point and you don't want to wonder "what if?" I'm sorry you're experiencing this. Lean on your advisor/friends/family/this thread for support if or when you need it. Send your PS out to friends who have matched and ask if they can take a look at it to reword/personalize (geographically) the statement if you dont have the energy. Try to sleep some. Not sure if you're an IMG, but if the case (or to other IMGs out there), I know multiple IMGs that did not match the first time. What many of them did was pass Step 3, more clinical, more research experience, and apply more broadly. On the second try, most of them got double of interviewed and ranked pretty high on their list. I wish you the best! < FYI not everyone that goes unmatched is an IMG. I'm USMD

57
Everyone remember to come back here on Friday and update your rank list with your Match result!!!Sure, Jan < XDI will for sure. I'm proud as heck of my rank list
58
According to someone on Reddit, there were some spots that went unfilled for psych< go to nrmp, click on options then reports statistics by specialty and regionit's 13 spots, you can see in the nrmp website under options/reports, no specifics though damn. should have risked the SOAP instead of dual applying. Now I'm nervous for FridayYeah same, I shouldn't have dual applied and taken my chances with soap X2 same HERE! << well if it makes you feel any better, these 10 spots would've been pretty difficult to get and they're not in desirable locations/hospitalsBut there's probably going to be like 750 ppl gunning for those 13 spotsreally curious about 6 unfilled spots in south <-I think Tri County in SC was intentionally using SOAP to fill their spots? <- Marshall University's (in Huntington, WV) rural track just got accredited and are SOAPing their 4 spots<having trouble finding the list. you guys got a link? I'm probably just dumb
59
Can someone please put the link for the psych applicant discord? every link I see is expired!

Good morning everyone!!! Today's the dayyyyyMatched!!! x42_
65
idk how i will sleep tonight. infinitely paranoid that I did something wrong with submitting my rank list <<how can you do something wrong? as long as it's certified, verified and paid (3 greens :D) you're goodlol why did you apply FM? OP: I was a weaker applicant and thus only got 10 psych interviews so I thought I should rank some FM programs rather than not match and have to soap into poorly located FM programswow 10 interviews is a lot. I only got 3 lol OP: in all fairness, 6 out of 10 of the interviews were from new programs that were either brand new or only had one or two current resident classes hahah I'm on a fm elective right now and so glad im doing psych lol < SAME <- do you hate medicine in general and that's why you like psych or what is the reason FM sucksIn the same boat. I hate OB so I don't want to match FM. But I only got 3 psych IVs so
66
What will the email subject say tomorrow? Does it say you matched when you open or as a subject? Im terrified to open my email <<< x1Subject line is neutral, I think it's "Did I match?"The subject will just say "2024 Main Residency Match Results"
67
Good luck y'all. In the meantime, a "spooky" (but evenutally heartening?) read the eve before match week: https://twitter.com/mburt34/status/1766859757149663739damn. I hope the resident was fired.this is terrifyingImagine ending up in prison around hardened toughened worst of the worst criminals, and being like oh I impersonated someone in the NRMP match, inmates looking at you confused. On the applicant tab one person got 36........ :0 I'm wondering if anyone got more than thatjust stop>lol I wonder if it's the person who got 36 posting this 😂 << LOL < you got me xDActually going on 36 interviews = trust issuesI had 29 as a DO, went on 15

How many people DID get an email? [II (tally marks) ] Did anyone NOT get an email from the Columbia PD in early January? how about response to LOI?did you get oneNo :( did anyone NOT get a response to their LOI to Columbia?I got a response to LOI, did you?

I did too!
Did you get an email from PD in early Jan?<I would also love to know, it's mentioned on the RTM page but nobody I've talked to have received it

when we see like 10 ppl ranking cornell 1 in the ROL tab, are we thinking that is the bulk of pepole who did? this spreadsheet seems like it does largely engage a huge swath/percentage of applicants..Keep in mind it could be a troll or someone trying to dissuade others from ranking it highly < You're a dumbass. Obviously if you get an IV from Cornell you'll rank it high. I sure did. < Not prior poster, but no need to name call. Based on location and lack of academic/research, Cornell was <10 or somewhere low for some of us at least. Good program thotrue but also almost 300 people submitted ROL and some programs only interview 100, so it does seem like a bulk of top applicants are represented on this spreadsheetI count 37 people ranking cornell anywhere on their list in the rank list tab, so about 1/3 of their interviewees represented here >> wow thats pretty amazingsince a lot of the top programs rank top applicants, even if people dont rank cornell 1, they can still match. for example, maybe someone ranked UCSF first, but didnt match there (because UCSF is also ranking highly competitive applicants) so they end up at their number 2, 3 ,4 (cornell) etc.is that common in psych top programs to slip around
76
due to personal emergencies, is it still possible to remove yourself from the match before monday results release?<first of all, I know this probably was a tough decision so I hope you are okay! If you didn’t withdraw before the deadline to withdraw then, I believe you are legally bound by contract to the residency you match in. You may be able to defer the start though according to the agreement w the nrmp: https://www.nrmp.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/2024-MPA-Main-Match-Applicant-2.pdf#page15thank you. i did not withdraw before the deadline, but wouldn't it be in the program's best interest if i request to withdraw now so they can get someone else before SOAP?One of my friends did this, it's possible. Communicate with your school and call the NRMP office, they deal with it on a case-by-case basis. >> Did the deferral or got out of the match before results released? << Withdrew after ranking and before Monday. They may require a letter from your school, so talk to the school first. >> thank you. do you think it makes more sense to contact my school before contacting the NRMP? > it would've been possible this past week but I find it hard for them to review your case before SOAP opens Monday. It may have been possible after the submission deadline but before Monday of Match week. I highly doubt things will move quickly enough during the weekend that this will be possible, no matter who you contact first or how quickly you get moving.

3/9If you want to match
Please submit your own haiku;
That's all we can do.
So if my haiku
Is off by one syllable
Does it mean I won't match? :(

ERAS, NRMP's greed thrives,
Debt-laden lives
2 more sleepless nights, 200,000 in debt; Purgatory vibesMust be nice, 400K here.> 453 :( < All private for me since our asshole school lied to us all How can I be fine?
Letting an algorithm,
Choose my next four years?
Yeet, i don't want to match

What time do match results come out on Monday? I think it's 9am CST on MondayCorrect, 10am EDT on Monday! (we're officially on daylight time after tomorrow :) yay sunshine!!)
79
you said programs recieve where people on their rank list ended up?? if you dual applied and ended up in a diff specialty, do they still see where you ended up? and if youre not ranked to match, do they still see this information?10AM ETGiven that "ranked to match" isn't actually a thing with a defined meaning, it's hard to answer your question. I can't imagine if a program didn't rank you that they would really care at all where you end up. If they did rank you, no matter the specialty, they will be able to see where you matched.
80
Yo 7 days everyone! Enjoy the last weekend of LIMBO! Next weekend will be much much different. This is the last weekend of our lives we won't be psychiatrists in training. Most of us will get that title
81
Is there any chance that residency programs receive, who their next residents are going to be, before this Monday, March 11th?no they hear the thursday before match dayThey hear by 2 PM EST on Thursday by email. Anyone know if they just receive their list or the list contains their whole rank lists and where everyone on their rank list matched as well?
82
will the programs that are not full be posted publicly monday? No, they will not. Only those in SOAP have access to the list.Dw it usually gets leakedYeah, it's weird. The SOAP webinar that was jointly sponsored by the NRMP and ERAS was adamant that, if you are SOAPing and you have a classmate helping you get organized on Monday, so sorry (and they can help you with *anything else*) but you can't show them the list of programs with open spots. LOL. < lol weird
83
Has anyone ever heard of someone transferring INTO a combined FM/psych or IM/psych residency program? Didn't apply to a combined program this cycle, only psych, but feeling some regrets now as I have absolutely loved my fourth year FM rotations. :( Wondering if this could be a possibility if I match at an institution that has combined programs since I've heard of ppl transferring outI know someone who did for psych im I have for Triple Board

Did anyone else receive RTM from Utah? seems like it is only personI also recieved RTM Utah, not OP <<was it a positive response to LOI? or an unsolicited we ranked you highly email? and was it for the categorical or rural track? did you go to second look? --->I didn't receive one and matched into the program!! If you want an idea to distract yourself, my personal choice has been rage watching sherriff of sodium's videos on ERAS (esp the conflict of interest at AAMC and death spiral ones). AAMC really a "non-profit" villain and I had no ideaHow could anyone not know that these orgs like aamc are greedy corrupt pigs taking all of us for granted.. lmfaoFair lollll I just didn't realize the extent of it all and the specifics with like financial of interest with AAMC/ERASIn the vast realm of medical academia, a legendary clash unfolded, a war of acronyms and corrupt bureaucracies that echoed through the hallowed halls of hospitals and lecture theaters. The great AAMC, ERAS and NRMP gathered their forces, each bearing the standard of their own noble cause. The AAMC, with its valiant warriors wielding the MCAT as their mighty sword, surged forward, seeking to conquer the hearts and minds of aspiring healers. ERAS, the harbinger of residency dreams, marched alongside, unveiling a torrent of applications like a storm of paper. On the other side of the battlefield, the NRMP, with its algorithmic wisdom, strategized the placements of the medical elite, orchestrating the dance of the Match. AAMC emerged as the victor of relentless greed and armed robbery of pre-medical and medical students, shaping the kingdom of medicine with unwavering influence.< could imagine a whole dramatic anime scene going down !!speaking of anime in the medicine kingdom, I can already imagine the possible isekais... "Reincarnated as a Bacteria in a World of Medical Professionals", "I Have X-Ray Vision Abilities in Another World", etc. :D

Just found out that another member of my class also listed my #1 as their #1. Do you think programs rank applicants against other members of their own med school class? I feel like this person is probably more competitive than me and worried this means I'm screwed. I think it probably factors in very little. Depending on geographics it's not uncommon for a program to interview even 10 candidates from the same school. I am sure they wouldn't be thrilled to have too many people from one class but I don't think that their ranking of candidates is colored by that all that much i think this factors in when deciding who to interview. one PD specifically told me he only selected 2-3 people from my school. and another program in the same city as my med school didnt interview a couple of us even though it is a decent program and we are "competitive" so they clearly chose who they interviewed for other reasons. its hard to say
92
How common is it to drop down to 5?~18% matched applicants match at their fifth or lower WHY do they not release specialty specific data +3Psych specific: 74% matched in top 4 last year<< where is this data x4!!
93
What do you guys think about second looks? I know, at this point, it's meaningless to worry, but I'm scared that I blew my chances of matching there if they considered our interest based on an optional event. I've read many posts on Reddit, and it seems like big-name academic programs submitted their ROL before the second look, and changing ROL is not easy since it requires a team meeting. I hope we all get matched, but if I knew I would be worried this much, I would have just attended. but it was not possible at that time and i chose to trust <<feel the samei think it depends if the program mentions if those who attend second looks are not disclosed to them. like 2 academic places i interviewed at specifically mentioned this. they said they dont factor it in bc second looks can be cost prohibitive, so they keep it anonymous who attends. i trust this. however, these places made it explicit. One of the places I visited contacted me VERY late, like 10 days before the deadline, to offer a visit that I had requested. They did that specifically because they have a policy that they don't accept visits from candidates until AFTER their rank list has been finalized--and it took them that long to finalize the thing.
94
Can someone clarify the meaning of RTM? For example if a program interviews 100 people, ranks 50, but only has 10 spots, does "RTM" mean you've been ranked among the 50 we ranked OR does it mean you've been ranked high enough such that if you rank us #1, you will likely get one of the 10 spots? Apologies if this is a dumb question, it just seems like not everyone is using the same definition of RTM. I'm also guessing this could be the reason so many people end up not matching to the places that sent them RTM emails.it literally means you are one of the 50 that they ranked < OP: thank you! < this is not correcti believe it means you are one of the 10. so if you rank them 1st, you get it. BUT i believe some programs send RTM emails to more people x3 < this is one of two correct answers (see next box).It means that you fall within the number that they usually fall down their list.<<THIS IS THE ANSWER < this is the other correct answer. the box before this is the optimistic version; this is the pessimistic version. e.g. if program ranks 100 interviewees and has 10 spots but usually falls to #28, RTM means anywhere from top 10 to top 28.OP: three different understandings of RTM, as I suspected lolI received confirmation from a PD of one residency that RTM means you are one of the 10 in this scenario. But that is just one residency program.RTM

96
Does anyone know the number of applicants applying psych vs the number of available positions this year?this data is on the front page < of what? X2
97
Did people get RTM from Utah or why did someone add it with blank column to RTM tab?I did not +1 someone wrote "RTM email from PD" but i think it cannot be real - yeah i don't think so eitherhow was the second look if you guys went? - i thought it was good! but kinda made me like the program less (probs just SLC less)I got a RTM email from Utah
98
What happens if we find out we failed a rotation after match? Since its a contract to work thereNo clue, but my program said they'd send our PD a letter if we skip out on some required end of medical school crap. Also, if the rotation is required for graduation, you will probably need to do something before residency to make it up so you can actually graduate. had a girl at my school have to redo a month of ICU starting right after graduation... was a sad scene. Be careful out there folks

I'm so bored that I'm looking at the application stats. Was shocked to see that applications for psych have been dropping the recent years. There were ~4000 this cycle (compared to like 5000 a few years back)https://www.aamc.org/data-reports/data/eras-statistics-data>> I think mainly IMG apps dropped. MD stayed relatively steady and DO increased. > Interesting!!That's still a lot for the total # of residency programs and spots available. We are being taken for granted as there will be never be a shortage of people entering medicine, so there'll always be a surplus of applicants, more new programs have to sprout open to accomodate everyone. Getting into med school is hard enough if not impossible for most, but then facing uncertainty of even matching into your desired specialty. That's just a black mark on the system. < True, but depends a lot on what type of med school you go to. US MD? You should be okay for most specialties. IMG? Its gonna be tough. wait so there were 4000 applicants, but only like 2500 slots?! x2Looks like it.. lotta applicants barely sny slots Uh it's def not a cakewalk for MDs & so much harder for imgs, if anything they have it easier as they're sympathized with for being imgs & programs want 'diversity,' stop trolling << when they look for "diversity" they are only looking for the POC USMD, not IMGS< who is shitting on MDs? relax.Don't act like it's a 200% guarantee for US MDs to match, we work hard as well, so stfu > +2everyone works hard wtf lol no need to question US MDs/US DOs/US IMGs and Non US IMGs.... everyone faces different adversities and different times of difficulties... everyone needs to calm down
