M 8:30Creative Drama K-2This class will teach young actors that drama can happen anywhere. This creative approach to the theatre arts will help the youngest drama students expand self-awareness and cultivate imagination. Students will have an opportunity to think independently, work cooperatively, and improve communication skills as they participate in drama activities and improvisation. The course, based on process drama technique, will integrate literature and other core subjects into the drama classroom. Young actors will learn how to create character through physical movement, gesture, sound and facial expression. The student will be able to identify the character, setting, and essential events in a story. Special attention will be given to high frequency words and early phonics within the setting of the drama classroom. M 8:30Roman Empire 5-8Through roleplay, sims, research, video, literature, games, and other projects, students will learn about the rise and fall of the Roman Empire (about 750 BC to 400 AD), architecture, mythology, military, technology and inventions, and the roles of different types of citizens in ancient Rome and how the rest of the world interacted with the Romans and the influence they had on the world and our present culture. M 9:30Drama 4-8This course is designed to expose continuing drama students to the process of creating character. We will continue to explore voice projection, movement, blocking, and in-class script work. Additionally, special attention will be given to techniques of character development, audition and monologue work, and reader’s theatre. Throughout the course of the term, students will read short scripts and stories from a variety of cultures and historical periods, and identify the characters, setting, plot, theme, and conflict to better understand performance and design choices. M 9:30Oregon Trail Theater 2-5Research, writing and Performing! We'll be looking up facts about the Oregon Trail and reading true stories and journal entries from those who were on it. Students will take the history they've learned and put it into performances, such as: "newscasts," short plays, improvisational skits, reader's theater, mime and puppetry. M 9:30Ready Readers K-2Instructors will work with different groups of students to develop reading and writing skills at each child’s own level. Weather appropriate attire is a must, we will do outdoor recess whenever possible. Lunch takes place back at DCS. M 12:15Clay & Art K-3 To help fundraise for DCS, students in this class will create a number of projects to sell at a spring craft fair at the school. The class will work with many materials during the term including clay, paper, fabric, and paint to explore individual creativity with projects like wall decorations and ceramic planters. They will learn the history of the different time periods when each amendment was created, and they will learn about how an amendment gets added to the constitution, what ratification is, and the Supreme Court's role in interpreting the constitution to uphold or create US law. M 1:30Ceramics & Tile Painting (2 Hours) 4-8 Tiled Mural Project, 4-8, 2 hours - Students in this art class will work together to create a tiled wall mural for DCS, step-by-step. The class will design the mural image, transfer and paint it onto ceramic tiles, then mortar and grout our finished collaboration. Students should be comfortable with group discussion and work, their drawing skills, getting messy, and being out of their comfort zone. M 1:30USA Road Trip 5-8 Visiting other countries may be thrilling, but the United States of America is an amazing place with many tourists from around the world visiting here. Let’s play tourists here! We’re going to find out about the unique qualities of many of the states in the U.S. starting with Oregon. M 1:30You Are a President 3-5In this project students will take on the role of president of their own country. Early on, students are informed that they will be president for a week and must complete a variety of activities and projects that presidents face on a daily basis. This project combines writing, research, collaboration, social studies, current events, and provides unlimited opportunities for students to use prior knowledge. Students will conduct various one to two-page activities based upon the role of president. This will include brainstorming, defining what they believe in, picking members for their Cabinet, writing speeches, creating laws, designing a monument, animal conservation, and trying to come up with solutions to issues that face the nation. We will also include a brief introduction to the American presidential election process (primaries, voting rights, electoral college, etc.). Helps meet social studies standards for these grades. Each week we will include an experiment or demonstration that builds on the concept of the day. Topics will include: atoms, basic subatomic particles, chemical bonds, chemical vs physical changes, states of matter, an introduction to acids / bases, and chemical reactions. Tu 8:30Coding & Robotics 4-8Students in coding and robotics will learn the basics of coding in different environments. They will be using Lego's EV3 robot, the Thymio, Ozobots (color code robots) and Scratch online (scratch.mit.edu). This is a class that teaches basic coding, and the focus will be for student to become familiar with using block coding in both Scratch and Python (lego). Each week students will be at a station where they will work on the different robots as assigned when they come to class. Tu 8:30Minecraft Math 2-4Using school provided technology and yes, Minecraft, we will be exploring multiplication, division, order of operations, volume, area, and many other math concepts. Students will be introduced to some basic programming languages commonly used in computer science and programming fields. Students will feel successful if they are in a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th grade curriculum and know basic computer skills (some typing skills). They should also be confident as an independent learner, as much of the class depends on the students being able to work independently on their computers. Tu 9:30Biz Town (REPEAT) 4-8In this simulation, students will learn to work as an employee, manager, CEO, or CFO of a simulated business. They will prepare for a one-day simulation on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 (mandatory for all students - we will take the bus), in a simulated community up in Portland that includes press, businesses, restaurants, banks, and even a town hall with civic employees. While they prepare, they will learn business skills, customer service, personal finance, and many other great things along the way! What parents need to know: The curriculum for this class is published by JA Biztown, and it comes to us at roughly a third-grade reading level. If your student shows reading levels below this threshold, please come and talk to us so we can find ways for your student to feel successful in this class. Tu 12:15STEM through Art (2 Hours) 5-8This two-hour class (12;30-2:25) is designed to develop technical art skills and will include "seeing" exercises - activities and practices that will help develop right brain skills, such as spatial differentiation and proportion perception. This will include an introduction to perspective drawing and other projects that emphasize realistic or representational art, (vs. modern, abstract, contemporary art). Math skills and beginning physical sciences will be surreptitiously covered in the process through multiple media. Perfection is not the end goal. Improvement of skills is. Tu 12:15Ukulele 4-8For continuing Ukulele students. New students may join if they already have at least several months of ukulele or other string instrument experience and know how to play chords. Daily practice is strongly encouraged. This class will focus on the foundations of ukulele playing. We will be learning about the basics-parts of the ukulele, string names, tuning, and playing beginning chords, rhythms, and melodies, as an ensemble and solo. The goal is to support creativity, rhythm, and collaboration, and empower students to acquire the skills to learn and play simple songs. W 8:30Tumbling & Yoga K-4This 50-minute class combines both Tumbling Skills and Kids Yoga. Tumbling: Duration 40 minutes - This class is for students with no experience in tumbling up to level 1 tumbling experience. Beginner students are to learn proper technique for basic body position, flexibility, conditioning exercises and spatial awareness. This class provides a solid foundation for more difficult skills to be learned as students gain strength, coordination and confidence. Kids train handstands, rolling, bridge skills, and, of course, cartwheels! - Kids Yoga: Duration 15 minutes - This class includes simple to intermediate yoga poses with music, art, relaxation and mindfulness activities. Children will learn how to focus and center themselves with various breathing and visualization techniques. W 8:30Zombie Geography Part III 5-8This is a geography class first! We will play off of the first two classes (though, having being enrolled in them is not essential for this class), and we will look at what it means to resettle in a new geographical location after being displaced from somewhere else. This class is focused on what is required for survival and for human settlement. We will look at climate, physical geography, and community as the focus in this class. W 12:15Running Club 5-8 (12:20-1:25) OFFSITE (OS)Starting and ending at DCS but mostly taking place outside or at World Gym. Students will start off with stretching and warm ups and then will go with two certified fitness instructors (one a track coach with La Creole who has also qualified to run the Boston Marathon and one DCS staff member) on a group run (either outdoors in good weather or inside on the World Gym treadmills in poor weather), working to develop good running technique and endurance gradually. Students can be confident that they will be ready to participate in other extracurricular running clubs or groups, like the track team at La Creole middle school (spring term) or cross country (fall term). Runs will begin and end at DCS. Students must wear appropriate running clothes (or bring clothing and shoes to change into before beginning the run). Meets PE standards for these ages. Students will learn the business side (economics, distribution, and recording process) that goes along with song-writing. Students will work on writing a song, or use a song that they know (public domain) and spicing it up! The emphasis of this class is on the specific, scientific information given in each episode as well as human impact on our precious planet. Th 9:30DCS, A Pioneer School 3-8 Replicating the school experience of the mid-1800s, this simulation has students playing for enough points to graduate to the next grade. Students write in a diary, create clothespin dolls, do old-fashioned math drills, handwriting exercises, and work in groups, giving them insights into the history and the beginnings of the school system. Students also read literature available during the 1800s and write about the pioneer experience. Th 9:30Top Secret - Food Science & Literature 3-5Dawn Adams will teach the novel "Top Secret" by John Reynolds Gardiner for the first hour of each class. (The main character does a science project in which people can photosynthesize, like plants, in order to end world hunger and food shortage). We will read; study literature elements like character, setting, etc.; study grammar and vocabulary. Each student will write an essay and/or create a project on solving a social issue of the student’s choice. They will choose their own topic and guiding question within these concepts, conduct research and first-person interviews, create a presentation, and come up witn a plan to take some kind of action relating to their topic, which they may choose to put into action before the end of the term or during the summer. Th 2:30Tumbling & Yoga 1-5This 50-minute class combines both Tumbling Skills and Kids Yoga. Tumbling: Duration 40 minutes - This class is for students with no experience in tumbling up to level 1 tumbling experience. Beginner students are to learn proper technique for basic body position, flexibility, conditioning exercises and spatial awareness. This class provides a solid foundation for more difficult skills to be learned as students gain strength, coordination and confidence. Kids train handstands, rolling, bridge skills, and, of course, cartwheels! - Kids Yoga: Duration 15 minutes - This class includes simple to intermediate yoga poses with music, art, relaxation and mindfulness activities.
