I think due to the amount of profit animators and other devs generate for the companies we work for, it’s hard to feel fully satisfied with the relatively low compensation on this industry vs other tech fields. In my personal case, I’m only able to do what I do because I have financial support from my parents. In NZ, the only places where studios exist, Wellington and Auckland, have ridiculous rental prices. When I was working a full time games job, I was only able to pay rent by sharing a house with 5 other people very far away from the city. So while compensation is higher than minimum wage, it’s either at or below the living wage in my case.

With regards to my frustration with leadership, it is not the fault of any individual at the studio, it’s purely a result of circumstance. I put down Culture as something I’m both excited and worried about because while I’m not happy with where a lot of issues pertaining to it are at the moment, I’m hopeful that it is improving. Game animation specifically seems to have a lot of outspoken individuals working for the betterment of everyone involved, this survey being one of those initiatives. A large part of why I enjoy being a part of this community is how open it is to everyone. There also seems to be more diverse people in positions of power in game anim? This could just be a bias due to who I follow on Twitter or something else but that’s how it appears to me.

My salary is about average for my state but well below average country-wide. We are a bit behind the current generation of technology due to the fact that we work on a live service game; updating our pipeline to include new tech or software is a very slow process - if it ever happens at all. A lot of this part of the industry is focused on tight production schedules and quantity over quality content. Schedules overlap constantly and if the last patch did or didn't do well, there's no time to analyze why or learn from those successes/failures. Just do the same thing again next time and hope for a better outcome. Further, there's no time to focus on improving quality at work so we have to improve on our own time. Working on personal projects becomes focused on improving someone else's project rather than working towards your own personal artistic goals.

WFH and remote work has pros and cons like anything else but, from my perspective at least, we have not seen a dramatic increase or decrease in production or quality attributed specifically to work location. Considering the tools and technologies that have enabled us to work collaboratively even during lockdown, I think that most of my team (myself included) would choose to mostly work from home if given the choice.

I'm worried that a large portion of game animation is being replaced by automation in general. Capture animation is being treated like a solution rather than a tool, or as a way to reduce production overhead by replacing animators with software. In my opinion, the various methods for automating animation are powerful and incredible tools that can and should be utilized, but they should not replace the workers who can utilize them to create incredible works of art.

Our studio is on the lower-end in terms of pay in the industry, and I very often see co-workers leave because of it. You can't really support a family or retirement here. I know personally I'm compensated lower than I could be at other studios, even after accounting for higher living expenses in other areas. I will need to leave in the next few years because of this.

I feel mixed on personal animation work and its importance. Its tough because i feel like its great to stay on top of the craft and hone and learn more all the time. At the same time personal life and ones time outside of animating is super important with family and life experiences in general since that lends a huge help to animation as well. Things are a bit strange at the moment as our Art Director was effectively art and animation director. He left and one of our animation freelancers has been contracted to do his role. However, I've always felt there is too much work across ALL art disciplines for just one person.

I'm very disappointed in the Salary options that 40K is the lowest option. I make 18K USD gross which is a very good salary in Eastern/Central Europe for a middle-level artist, and also above average salary in my country. I can have a middle-class quality of life here in Hungary, probably similar to a 60-70K salary in a Los Angeles (area) studio. And people in Asia probably usually earn even lower then that, but well we won't find out because the lowest option in the poll is below 40K. Feels like this poll only considered Western studios, especially in the US. I wonder how much ppl will earn lower than 40K then, but would've been nice to see if there's a difference in European regions, and Asia, but we just won't see it well.

I want to learn mocap, but I haven't found an online way to do it. I've watched every tutorial I can find, but there weren't many and they weren't up to date, and was still unable to complete a practical test.

Rigging and/or Skinning, my mobile studio outsourced modeling and rigging, I was the only animator, I sent out the bids and approved the incoming work, I was laid off and now they get their animation from there, which all agree is pretty weak quality wise, but apparently good enough.

I love animation, but not neccesarrily games. I'd be happy to do film. But advancing in game animation you eventually exit animation and are working on tools and supervising others, and getting the anims into game, the top of the career is out of animating and into tech stuff
