Our research groups will participate in three Socratic seminars. One challenge is to engourage the tutors to get all the students to both be both active in the seminars, but also to listen and be attentive to what is being said by others. The teacher leads, but does not control the conversation. The seminar is based on that all students have the same knowledge about the topic being discussed, where there is no right or wrong and the teacher engourages the students to think freely. The teacher leads the seminar, but leaves the discussion to the students, as far as it is possible. Each Socratic seminar contains 7-8 students, and the groups are the same each time there is a seminar. The seminar goes on for 45-60 minutes. A typical Socratic seminar has a pre seminar, an opeing question, analytic questions, socratic questions and a post seminar. Students prepare a socratic seminar by watching the film or reading e.g. a novel, an article, a poem or a short story. The Socratic seminar is filmed and analyzed by the teacher. Classroom observation by the teacher continuously while having the seminar. The student evaluate the Socratic seminar afterwards where they reflect on both their own effort into the seminar, and what they have learned from the task. Communication: The students might for example nod or shake their heads in agreement, say “I agree” or “as X said”, ask each other questions and apologizing for interruption.
