This page (the 'How to use' tab) is the central instruction and navigation page for the Inventory. Here you can find a number of interactive elements, which will allow you to quickly find the data that you need. The stepwise approach described below is aligned with Chapter 4 of the Global Ocean Asset Data Guide. A case example of how to use the guide is also provided beneath the instructions (see CASE EXAMPLE box).

HOW TO USE
7
STEP 1: IDENTIFY AVAILABLE DATASETSBOX 1: INTERACTIVE FILTER MENUS
8
9
In BOX 1, to the right of this text, there are two interactive filter menus which each have a number of options. These menus allow you to 'filter' (or pre-select) the datasets shown in the 'Inventory of datasets' tab, so that you can quickly find datasets relevant to the account component and asset type or condition for which data is needed.
10
11
The first menu is named 'Account component': this menu allows you to filter the components of ocean accounts for which the datasets are relevant. These include: Ecosystem extent, Ecosystem condition, Individual environmental assets, Carbon, Produced assets, Pressures, and Designated use.
12
The second menu is named 'Ocean asset': this menu allows you to filter the type of ocean asset or related conditions that the datasets are relevant for. These include: marine and coastal ecosystem types, marine and coastal condition parameters and indicators, marine and coastal environmental resources (as listed in the GOAP Technical Guidance), carbon parameters related to marine and coastal ecosystems, marine and coastal produced assets, use designations for marine and coastal areas/activities, and parameters and indicators for four types of pressures (water emissions, solid wastes, atmospheric deposition, intensity of use). Note that this menu has a scroll bar, to access more options.
13
14
To filter for an Account component or Ocean asset, you can scroll through the relevant menu and simply click on the asset component or ocean asset of interest. To select multiple options, you can hold the CTRL key on your keyboard, then select all options of interest.
15
To de-select an option, which will remove the Inventory filter for that option, you can:
16
(a) hold the CTRL key on your keyboard and click; OR
17
(b) click the tickbox button at the top right of either menu, and click on the options you want to de-select.
18
To remove ALL selections, you can click the Remove Filter button at the top right of the menu.
19
20
Once you are happy with your selection, you can move to STEP 2.
21
22
STEP 2: CHECK AVAILABLE DATASETS AGAINST THE QUALITY ASSESSMENT CRITERIABOX 2: QUICK LINKS
23
24
The Inventory of datasets can be accessed by navigating the tabs at the bottom of this spreadsheet, or by clicking on the links in BOX 2 (to the right of this text). The Inventory will have been filtered according to your selections in STEP 1. To change your dataset selection, please return to STEP 1. INVENTORY OF DATASETS
25
The inventory of global datasets that can support national ocean accounting.
26
27
Now you can assess the relevance of the pre-selected datasets for your national context and ocean accounting priorities. Instructions on how to do this are available in the Global Ocean Asset Data Guide, Chapter 4. Datasets can be assessted in terms of relevance, interpretability, institutional environment, accuracy, and accessibility.PORTALS AND REPOSITORIES
28
An additional list of portals and repositories, which may contain additional data that can support national ocean accounting.

APPENDIX - COLUMNS EXPLAINED
32
The Global Ocean Asset Data Guide informs this assessment by providing information on:An explanation of exactly what each column in the Inventory represents.
33
a) Inventory column to check: Tells you which column of the Inventory provides relevant information.
34
b) Things to consider: Highlights points to think about when making a decision on using a dataset.APPENDIX - ACCOUNT COMPONENTS EXPLAINED
35
An explanation of exactly what is included in each of the account components.
36
After completing a search, clear the selections in the filter menus before starting a new search.
37
38
CASE EXAMPLE: MANGROVES (COASTAL)
39
40
A user is seeking to access coastal mangrove data to support their national ocean accounting processes.
41
42
They first go to Step 1, and look at the interactive filter menus.
43
a) In the 'Account component' menu, they would select 'Ecosystem extent'.
44
b) In the 'Ocean asset' menu, they would select 'Mangroves (coastal)'.
45
46
They can then navigate to the 'Inventory of datasets' tab, and see that there are two datasets available:
47
i) The global biophysical typology of mangroves
48
ii) Global Mangrove Watch (1996-2016)
49
50
Following the instructions in Step 2, after assessing the relevance of these datasets for their national context and ocean accounting priorities, they may conclude that Global Mangrove Watch provides the data measure that they are looking for.
51
52
This user can then follow the links provided in the Inventory to access the data.
