Questions from Sept. 17 Presentation on ResearchName
2
Thank you for this session. A question I have is around how these findings relate to inequities in teacher quality and retention in high poverty v/s low poverty schools.Ritu Khanna
3
What are comparisons with racial segregation and acadmeic outcomes in other countries (Canada, United Kingdom)?Kelly Clark
4
Yes, thank you for this opportunity. How do you recommend SFUSD respond to segregated neighborhoods without bussing for all SFUSD students? Is transportation one of the main factors?Noah Ingber
5
For Prof. Reardon: Of schools with lower segregation, what’s the balance between those with larger and smaller achievement gaps? What distinguishes those schools? What might we learn from those differences regarding caveats for desegregation enabling more equitable opportunities?Norma Ming
6
What is the national academic outcomes of African American and LatinX students in schools that are racially integrated in comparison to the school that are not …. (not districts but schools)?Kelly Clark
7
For Prof. Johnson: To what extent does your research suggest that infusion of financial resources can offset historical inequities in inputs, to counteract the negative consequences of racial and socioeconomic segregation?Norma Ming
8
Combining Prof. Reardon and Prof. Johnson’s work - what role should the LCFF concentration grants have on school integration efforts? We know that most minority students are segregated into <90% minority enrollmentBriana Mullen
9
For Professor Johnson: Are patterns discernible re. what investments were made most frequently with the additional resources that led to (or were correlated with) the achievement gains?Myong Leigh
10
Regarding segregation, since the US does not have examples of where a segregated, high poverty school performs particularly well, I wonder what can be learned by looking outside of the US. There are countries where I imagine racial integregation is not possible - and yet children succeed. How do we reconcile that racial integration does not appear crucial for success for children in other countries? It would help to hear recognition that the systemic racism and impact of capitalism in the US are powerful, so much so that there is no school district that is segregated and has high poverty concentrations is able to succeed, as measured by current academic outcomes. Thu Cung
11
COMMENT: It's as if my questions was anticipated - so much appreciation for Professor Carter and her perspective.
12
Are there measures that look at school integration and longitudinal outcomes related to economic mobility.Amy Gottesfeld
13
What recommendations do each of the speakers have for moving the SF and Oakland schools towards more equitable education in the short term and long term?kathy copic
14
A strong sense of identity is exceedingly important for all. I am a teacher in SFUSD and am so proud of the work the District has put together for us and is referred to as the First 30 days.Mary K Peralta-Falzon
15
Comment: I’ve been feeling the same! 3rd Grade teacher in SFUSD
16
I heard that SF has the most private schools for any urban area. What is this so?Mary K Peralta-Falzon
17
For Prof. Carter: One big question about school integration is whether it is necessary and/or sufficient for achieving equitable opportunities. You highlight that it isn’t sufficient. Can you comment further on how necessary it is? What alternate paths might we want to consider to achieve greater equity, which don’t involve reassigning students? Or, what are some of the potential negative consequences of seeking to diversify schools, particularly for the historically underserved students we most want to serve better?Norma Ming
18
I would love to hear how we hold the compelling reasons for bilingual edcuation alongside how it often results in racialized pathways within a school. Do you all have thinking about that?Lizzy Hull Barnes
19
School desegragation and school integration requires courage. Is the SFUSD BOE committed to school integration? Is the San Francisco community ready for such a change?francisco
20
Thank you all so much for this presentation. I was wondering, is there any effort to incorporate measures of cultural competencies, strong family engagement, or positive student connectedness in coordination with standardized exams or grades in order to rate schools?meghan mcdoniel
21
Diversity is not equity is profound, thank you, Dr. Carter.
Do we need to focus on more of an anti-racist infrastructure, first?
Karla Bobadilla
22
How do we achieve more integration while still providing challenging and engaging classroom experiences? It seems as though we repeat too much curriculum and don’t allow enough creativity to our teachers because we focus so much on testing. My education goal as a parent is to teach my child and all children to love learning.Rachel Boles
