1Altocedro Desnudos2003The Wine AdvocateThe 2003 Desnudos is 100% Tempranillo sourced from a densely planted 70+ year old vineyard located in Consulta, a sub-region of Mendoza. The wine was fermented with native yeasts and aged for 30 months in French oak before being bottled unfiltered. Opaque purple-colored, it gives up aromas of pain grille, pencil lead, espresso, and blackberry. Full-bodied, structured, and rich on the palate, the wine is loaded with spicy black fruits and enough ripe tannin to support an additional 6-8 years of further evolution in bottle. Beautifully balanced and long in the finish, this is one of the finest Tempranillo-based wines produced outside of Rioja and Ribera del Duero.

3Altocedro Desnudos2004The Wine AdvocateThe flagship 2004 Desnudos is a blend of 60% Malbec and 40% Tempranillo. It receives a unique elevage of eight months in new oak followed by an additional 22 months in second use oak. It offers up an alluring nose of toast, mineral, espresso, black cherry, and blackberry liqueur. This leads to an elegant, medium to full-bodied wine with excellent savory flavors, outstanding depth and concentration, and a lingering, fruit-filled finish. Drink it from 2010 to 2018.

6Altocedro Gran Reserva2007MalbecThe Wine AdvocateThe 2008 Malbec Reserva was produced from vines averaging 75 years of age with indigenous yeast fermentation, malolactic in barrel, and aging for 12-15 months in new and second use French oak. The wine is opaque purple in color with an alluring nose of wood smoke, Asian spices, balsamic, black cherry, and a hint of blueberry. Ripe, savory, and sweetly-fruited in the mouth along with excellent depth and concentration, it is already revealing some complexity and enough structure to unwind for several more years. 9Altocedro Gran Reserva2008MalbecThe Wine AdvocateThe 2008 Malbec Gran Reserva interestingly contains 3% Semillon in its blend. The infusion of white juice appears to elevate the aromatics, giving them an extra dimension. Aromas of cherry blossom, exotic spices, truffle, and assorted black fruits lead to a voluminous, concentrated, plush Malbec with a pure 60-second finish. Give this pleasure-bent effort another 3-4 years of cellaring and drink it from 2014 to 2023.

One of my all time favorite songs is Whitney Houston’s “The Greatest Love of All.” After tasting the Altocedro Gran Reserva Malbec three years in-a-row with the master himself-winemaker Karim Mussi, I have to shout that this singular wine may be the bellwether of the future. With apologies to Bordeaux, the Napa Valley, Walla Walla, Tuscany and other parts of the globe that make incredible ultra, ...ultra premium wines in the Bordelais tradition, Karim has been able to master the mystical powers of La Consulta and bring the magic to all wine world. Two years ago, I was dumbfounded as he poured the superb 2007 vintage. Simultaneously elegant and powerful, I could not stop thinking about the wine long after I had first sipped it. The wine showed a tremendous rush of pure red fruit that the guys in Saint-Emilion and Pomerol can never get enough of…it was a real eye opener. Last year, as I basked in the Argentine sun, I found the 2008 to be even more astounding. Demonstrating a little more power, with some black fruit goodness, yet maintaining its incredible balance. I gave the wine 99 points and it shared honors for my #1wine of 2011. Just a few weeks ago, as I baked under the summer skies of La Consulta, I went into a trance that even my colleagues noticed. They moved away from me as I tasted the 2009 vintage. Not sure why I suddenly forgot how to type and just staring into the wine glass, but I was amongst friends and didn’t care, I just let the wine guide me into its world. Malbecs of this incredible quality comes into existence once in a lifetime. There is no doubt that the 2009 Altocedro Gran Reserva Malbec is one of greatest young wines that I have ever enjoyed. As I finished my taste, I could only hear Whitney’s song; the world for that one moment stood still. Could the paradigm and propping Argentina to a new plateau? Has the New World got just a little bit older?

35Altocedro Reserva2010MalbecThe Wine AdvocateThe 2010 Reserva Malbec is seasoned with 5% Tempranillo and aged for fifteen months in French oak. It is missing a little personality and intensity on the nose, although it is fresh and defined. The palate is much better with succulent black toasty fruit, although the cocoa-tinged finish indicates some over-enthusiasm for the oak. Drink 2013-2018.

Karim Mussi Saffie founded Altocedro in 1998, having worked in the wine industry for three decades. Altocedro owns three vineyards in La Consulta totalling 59-acres that are fed both through flood and drip irrigation. There are parcels of vine up to 70-years in age. There are some good wines here, although they were occasionally blighted by excessive use of oak disproportionate to the level of fruit.

79Año Cero2011Cabernet SauvignonThe Wine AdvocateThe 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon, from La Consulta in the Uco Valley, has a pretty, black currant pastille and blueberry-scented bouquet. The new French oak is nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with a chocolate-tinged entry. It is supple and smooth with touches of mocha towards the harmonious finish. This is a fine, easy-drinking Cabernet. Drink now-2015.

Stephen Tanzer International Wine Cellar
2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Ano Cero Mendoza($15) (from 47-year-old vines): Medium red-ruby. Sexy, nuanced aromas of plum, mocha, game and cocoa powder. Sweet, supple and rather suave, with enticing inner-mouth floral perfume lifting the dark fruit and licorice flavors. This will rely as much on its firm acidity as on its ripe tannins for balance and longevity. Offers noteworthy complexity for the price. 8888
