The 2019 MN Science Standards
26
These standards are considered 3-Dimensional – incorporating three learning strands in every benchmark.
27
· Dimension 1: Scientific and Engineering Practices, SEP’s
28
· Dimension 2: Crosscutting Concepts, CC’s
29
· Dimension 3: Disciplinary Core Ideas, DCI’s
30
Please note that each benchmark includes all three dimensions. It is appropriate to address all 3 Dimensions together, or to mix and match the 3 Dimensions to move your students at whatever pace best meets their needs.

Tab 3. PLT Activities & Benchmarks: A quick guide on how to use the multiple columns found at this tab
33
a. PLT Activity Name
34
b. Guiding Question – what will students focus on in this activity?
35
c. Phenomenon – The 2019 standards are phenomena based. Phenomena are events students can observe with their own senses.
36
d. Concept – Describes the content to be addressed in the activity.
37
e. Best setting – Will this activity be best completed outside or inside?
38
f. MN Science Benchmarks – this is the 2019 benchmark language in full, including examples and emphases.
39
g. Circle of completion
40
----> Note: no one activity completely addresses a benchmark.
41
42
h. Complete the Circle Ideas
43
i. These ideas consider what the activity accomplishes, and how the activity can be tweaked, augmented or extended to more fully address the benchmarks described.
44
i. Dimension 1: SEP’s The Science and Engineering Practices this activity addresses.
45
j. Dimension 2: CC’s The Crosscutting Concepts this activity addresses
46
k. Dimension 3: DCI’s The Disciplinary Core Ideas this activity addresses
47
48
Note: Each PLT activity usually addresses additional dimensions as those required by the benchmark. If you are able to “complete the circle” you can know your students have also advanced in these additional elements of the 3 dimensions as well.
