Using the Google Spreadsheet

3
The emphasis is on Vismig but records can include any species seen or heard in or from your house/garden during the day or night, including flyovers or birds seen/heard in neighbouring gardens or streets. As with previous garden bird counts, all records count as long as you are in your garden or house at the time.*
4
5
1First find a spare tab at the bottom of the spreadsheet - eg "Observer 5: Name"
6
(if there is no spare tab click on the arrow on the right of the last tab and select "Duplicate". A new copy will be created and you can now follow steps 2 onwards below)
7
8
2Click on the arrow to the right of the tab and select "Rename"
9
10
3Insert your own name - this is now your sheet to fill in. Your name will now autopopulate box A1 (top left corner) and also the summary table.
11
12
4Add your Location and Grid Ref to the blue cells in the top left hand corner and you are good to go.
13
14
5Only enter data within the pink boxed area - cells outside of this area will auto-populate and should not be edited.
15
16
6Enter your counts of sightings - you can just enter "1" to record a species but part of the interest of Vismig is the numbers of birds migrating
17
18
7Weekend dates are highlighted in green and the "48hr Vismig Weekend Count" is highlighted in Red.

USEFUL TIPS:
23
24
1How to lock your data sheet to prevent accidental edits by others:
25
• Click on the arrow to the right of your name on your sheet's tab (at the bottom)
26
• Select "Protect the sheet" from the pop-up menu
27
• You can then add a description eg "Your Name" (optional) and click "Set Permissions"
28
• In the next pop-up box select "Restrict Who Can Edit this Range" and then select "Only You"
29
• A padlock image should now appear to the left of your name on the tab meaning only you can edit
30
31
2There is a filter in Cell B5 that allows you to select only those species you've already recorded. This speeds up data entry and saves scrolling through lots of species you haven't seen or are unlikely to see!

35
*For simplicity's sake we are not accepting records recorded on equipment (unless the bird was also seen or heard at the time). These recorded records can still be submitted via the website as usual with a note in the Comments box that equipment was used.
