I think a big turn off for a lot of people could be that NSU is far away from many people (I'm not sure how to fix that issue)

(Maybe 3 or 4 known opportunities to interact with the NSU music department.)It seems to me that Classic on the Cane is one of the biggest music recruiting events if not the biggest. This us especially true for smaller schools in Louisiana but not in the area. But, I have heard many of the smaller band's directors talk about how hard it is to go to Classic because of rules that may favor already large band programs. My high school's band only went twice during my four years, and I haven't seen them here in the past two years either.

If the faculty and students had time, I think they should do more small ensemble travel to highschool recruiting. This is how I got really connected to NSU. Definitely engage with the students when recruiting and show them that NSU would be a great place to be. Ask them questions and get to know them a little more.

For example: My freshmen year when I went to Freshmen Connection to schedule classes and I was majoring Music Education at the time, I was scheduled 20 hours for my first semester. I didn’t know what “hours” were and the classes were hard and it was a lot. I also had 20 hours the following semester and it was very tiring and exhausting. I didn’t have time to eat, I didn’t have time to practice with all the homework and assignments I had, I didn’t get much sleep. That was the drive for me to change my major to Music Business. I know college is hard, even as a freshmen, you have to get adjusted to college life, but I would recommend letting them know first hand about the amount of hours they will have.

I remember really enjoying the invitational I mentioned above, and I believe that's sort of shifted into the composer in residence concert, but it's no longer to the scale it used to be. The composer in residence concert now happens in Magale, as opposed to the concert I experience which was hosted in A.A. Freds, and there were many more than just 3 bands. I got to see many different performances that were all really cool, because A.A. Freds has the room to host so many people. One of the standout performances was a marimba solo with wind ensemble where the soloist started playing kazoo while playing marimba, and I remember thinking that it was so cool to be able to have a musical experience like that, which was facilitated by the NSU music faculty and campus.
