The drum majors from my Senior year of high school were more personal than any of the staff here (besides DMAC, he was always lovely and went out of his way to get to know prospective students and left a lasting positive impression) | I'm not sure, I think retention is more important at this point.

I think a big turn off for a lot of people could be that NSU is far away from many people (I'm not sure how to fix that issue)

22 | 8/28/2025 12:56:49 | Mars Heard | Zachary High School | Zachary | Music Education | Percussion | Classic on the Cane! | Scholarships/financial aid, Program reputation, Opportunities for performance/ensemble participation | No | The athletic band director, DMac at the time, came to my high school and talked about to the bands and the SON, he gave us a lot of good information and answered all the questions I had well. | More outreach; I only had so much connection to NSU being only a few hours away. (Maybe 3 or 4 known opportunities to interact with the NSU music department.) | It seems to me that Classic on the Cane is one of the biggest music recruiting events if not the biggest. This us especially true for smaller schools in Louisiana but not in the area. But, I have heard many of the smaller band's directors talk about how hard it is to go to Classic because of rules that may favor already large band programs. My high school's band only went twice during my four years, and I haven't seen them here in the past two years either.
23 | 9/17/2025 9:14:53 | Dorcia Gillam | Northwestern State University | Cheneyville, LA | Music Performance | Soprano | High school band/choir/orchestra director, NSU faculty visit to my school, Band/choir/orchestra performance at NSU, Word of mouth (friends, family, alumni) | Quality of faculty, Scholarships/financial aid, Campus visit experience, Program reputation, Opportunities for performance/ensemble participation | No | The kindness and communication of the faculty had a MAJOR influence on my decision to attend. | If the faculty and students had time, I think they should do more small ensemble travel to highschool recruiting. This is how I got really connected to NSU. | Definitely engage with the students when recruiting and show them that NSU would be a great place to be. Ask them questions and get to know them a little more.
24 | 9/17/2025 9:20:59 | Ja’Nia Wallace | Natchitoches Central High School | Marthaville, LA | Music Business | Violin | High school band/choir/orchestra director, NSU faculty visit to my school, Word of mouth (friends, family, alumni) | Quality of faculty, Scholarships/financial aid, Recommendations from teachers/mentors, Location/proximity to home | Yes | Northwestern Symphony Orchestra Concerts | Scholarship | Explaining about classes and the amount of hours a semester for each major | Make sure you fully let them know and understand the ENTIRE process of class life and the amount of hours a semester depending on major. For example: My freshmen year when I went to Freshmen Connection to schedule classes and I was majoring Music Education at the time, I was scheduled 20 hours for my first semester. I didn’t know what “hours” were and the classes were hard and it was a lot. I also had 20 hours the following semester and it was very tiring and exhausting. I didn’t have time to eat, I didn’t have time to practice with all the homework and assignments I had, I didn’t get much sleep. That was the drive for me to change my major to Music Business. I know college is hard, even as a freshmen, you have to get adjusted to college life, but I would recommend letting them know first hand about the amount of hours they will have.
25 | 9/17/2025 9:39:18 | Lawson Kirsch | Pineville High School | Alexandria, LA | Music Performance | Violin | High school band/choir/orchestra director, NSU faculty visit to my school, Word of mouth (friends, family, alumni) | Quality of faculty, Scholarships/financial aid, Campus visit experience, Program reputation, Opportunities for performance/ensemble participation, Recommendations from teachers/mentors, Location/proximity to home | No | How kind and experienced the staff are. | I would have wanted more visits from the NSU music staff to my high school. | More school visitations from staff members would show prospective students the prowess of these great professors, and what they could learn from them.
26 | 9/17/2025 9:57:33 | Hope Foster | Buckeye High School | Deville, LA | Music Performance | Flute | Word of mouth (friends, family, alumni) | Quality of faculty, Program reputation, Opportunities for performance/ensemble participation | Yes | Classic on the Cane (x3), Flute Day, multiple recitals/concerts | Everyone was always so kind and encouraging | Reach out to smaller schools like Buckeye/Marksville.

28 | 9/17/2025 10:03:53 | Marcela Sabillón | Escuela de Música Victoriano López | San Pedro Sula, Honduras | Music Business | Flute | NSU faculty visit to my school, Word of mouth (friends, family, alumni) | Scholarships/financial aid, Program reputation | Yes | Flute choir performance | The excitement of my professor to get me here, to give me an opportunity and to want to know more about me and my process, the help I got from him was awesome. | As an international student we have some extra resources to get help with the process. It should be even more, more chances of scholarship or financial aid. And maybe more attention from them. | studio tours going to high schools, playing popular pieces and post them on social media ?
29 | 9/17/2025 10:09:41 | Lennon Cooke | Pineville Highschool | Pineville Louisiana | Music Performance | Flute | High school band/choir/orchestra director | Scholarships/financial aid, Campus visit experience, Recommendations from teachers/mentors, Location/proximity to home | No | No | Taking a tour on campus. | Nothing

31 | 9/17/2025 10:38:37 | Jorge Bravo | Booker T Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts | Dallas, TX | Music Performance | Trombone | Word of mouth (friends, family, alumni) | Recommendations from teachers/mentors | No | Sometimes when a college would come to my high school they would bring a smaller ensemble to play a piece, the one I remember the most was when they brought a trumpet ensemble and played a really difficult sounding but impressive piece. I think that just hearing the students from a school can leave an impact, if they like what they heard they could think something like, “wow, if I go to this school ill get the chance to play with this person.”
32 | 9/17/2025 10:39:49 | Parrel Appolis | University of Tennessee | Knoxville, Tennessee | Music Performance | Flute | Social media, Word of mouth (friends, family, alumni) | Quality of faculty, Scholarships/financial aid | No | Meeting the faculty and studio | I think the most impactful thing for prospective students is one-on-one time with the professor, and a chance to meet and shadow the studio to see colleague interaction, environment, etc.

The music staff were on my team from the moment I walked in. | Communication about scholarships. Some students get far more than others, regardless of their prior experience or skill. | Make sure you talk scholarships up front!!!

Keep doing that | ||||||

When it comes to recruiting transfers specifically, I feel like there should be some kind of outline (regarding transfer related questions) so there is less confusion.

I remember really enjoying the invitational I mentioned above, and I believe that's sort of shifted into the composer in residence concert, but it's no longer to the scale it used to be. The composer in residence concert now happens in Magale, as opposed to the concert I experience which was hosted in A.A. Freds, and there were many more than just 3 bands. I got to see many different performances that were all really cool, because A.A. Freds has the room to host so many people. One of the standout performances was a marimba solo with wind ensemble where the soloist started playing kazoo while playing marimba, and I remember thinking that it was so cool to be able to have a musical experience like that, which was facilitated by the NSU music faculty and campus.
