JoannaRuxtonFounderOcean Generation1. I recognise the fact that conservation work is predominently carried out by women
2. I have founded an ocean conservation charity with 80% female staff - and that was unintentional in the recruitment process
3. I am the mother of 2 daughters and grandmother to 4 granddaughters, all of whom are aware of the threats to our planet and what they can do about it.
4. I believe that the future of our planet's health will be in the hands of the women and girls we educate today.

I have fought for women economic empowerment through Fair Trade in supply chains and corporate governance for over 30 years. I have personally experienced acute sexism and harassment in my work. I realise that this sexism stands in the way of delivering genuine systemic change in business, finance, civil society and government.

AlexBell
Co-founder and co-facilitator - The Eden Project Changemaker Programme
www.PortlandEducation.co.uk1. At the Eden Project Changemaker Programme my female co-founder and co-facilitator and I have actively ensured that at least 50% of our sustainability experts, contributors and speakers are women.
2. As a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts for the past 8 years I have intentionally nominated more women fellows than men. Including many influencers in sustainability, regenerative practices and the climate crisis.
3. As co-founder and co-facilitator of the https://www.widerpurpose.uk/ CSR Champions programme for the past four years, 85% of our emergent leaders graduating from the programme as school based community catalysts in climate and sustainability are women. This year’s cohort is 100% women.
4. For too long, women have been denied access, unrecognised and underrepresented in the work needed to ensure the safe future of humanity on this planet. I pledge to ensure that all the work I do empowers women in non-tokenistic ways in our vital united actions against this beyond urgent climate emergency. I am therefore proud to be a signatory of this highly important letter.

Ensuring unconscious bias training is rolled out across the organisation; seeking different and varied channels for recruitment as part of a wider attraction, recruitment and retention strategy; flexible working and maternity leave arrangements; ensuring at least 50% gender balance on exec team - not through quotas but through improved attraction and recruitment approaches. The most important and impactful approach in my view is to actively role model authentic behaviours to set the standard you want to see. One example of this is speaking up in internal and client meetings when inappropriate comments are made and calling these out - as opposed to typical behaviours of turning a blind eye to such comments, or laughing them off as "banter" to avoid awkwardness - particularly in client settings. The visible signs of what a leader/individual does/says have the greatest impact in setting the culture.
