JAKUBANY GREEK CATHOLIC CHURCH RECORDS Final Version 8/24/07
2
3
BAPTISMS 1772 - 1895 Sorted primarily by Father's Surname & first name; mother's name, & chr/birth date of child
4
(The mother's surname is shown when no husband is given or shown first when there is a PSML--see below)
5
(The column for the common U.S. spelling of the first name was removed.)
6
7
Notes: -The word 'died' in the death column means that the child was baptized after he/she died and child had no godparents.
8
- Remember that the mother's maiden name was not usually given until the latter part of 1826. I make no attempt to write in the
9
maiden name from entries 1826+ when the maiden name was provided but leave that to you.
10
- Also remember that birth dates were not recorded in the baptism entries until 1852 when both birth and baptism dates were
11
given. In text format, the baptism dates appear in the middle of the 2 date columns. From 1852 on, I have chosen to include
12
the birth dates only (for the most part) because they are the more important of the 2 dates.
13
- After 1857, there are some illegitimate children that have notes in the observation column: Per subsequentus matrimonium
14
legitmus (PSML) of 'husb' giving the husband's name which seems to indicate the father of the child as well. No research has
15
been done to determine whether the illegitimate child's last name was that of the mother or father in death or marriage records.
16
I've decided to list these children not only under the mother's surname but also under the father's PSML surname.
17
- The record numbers don't necessarily correspond to the ones in the actual records because no record numbers were used
18
in the earlier records and due to numbering mistakes by the record keepers. In some cases, twins were on the same line.
19
- The man's name in parenthesis following a mother's name is her father's name.
20
- A date showing a range of dates like 18741101-7 means the film was too dark to read; that the birth was somewhere in the
21
range of the 1st to the 7th. In these cases, I will give the baptism date if legible.
22
- In some cases, even though only the mother's name is mentioned, not all children are marked as illegitimate, tho they pry are.
23
- The many question marks denote hard to read names/dates, guesses at partial or illegible names/dates.
24
- In some entries where 2 children names are given on the same line with the same parents shown, 'twins' is not always shown.
25
We could assume they are twins though, perhaps because children were not given middle names yet?
26
- There are oddities in the records. On one there were 2 death date notations: one over the child's name and the other in the
27
observation column. Also, several times, a birth entry from a previous year is stuck in another year up ahead.
28
- There are several entries in the latter years (1890-95) where the locale (house # field) is given as a U.S. city, state or "America.".
29
I am given to believe that the baptism and birth took place in the U.S. location and that the US church priest sent the info
30
to the Jakubany church priest who recorded the info. Perhaps this is why several records are recorded out of date sequence.
31
Also, the record keeper, in several cases, numbered those out of place line entries with the next available number for that year.
32
If there is more than a few months that separate the birth and baptism dates, it is not known for sure whether the child was
33
baptized in the U.S. or Jakubany since baptisms usually occur as soon as possible after the birth.
34
- The birth/baptism records end on Oct 1895. The records of children born 1895-1900 who had died were once added to this file.
35
In the interest of space and since the birth records from 1895 Nov -2004 are now available, these added records have been
36
removed in this file as of 12/1/04 except for those few entries where an original birth entry could not be found in the 1895-1900 period.
37
- Be aware that some hyphenated surnames may be listed any of 4 ways: ie Czompely-Baka, Baka, Czompely, or Baka-Czompely.
38
- Be aware that some first names are used synonamously: Marianna and Maria; Susanna & Zuzanna; Sophia & Zofia; Helena, Ilona, Elena, & Ilyka
39
- "(RK typo?)" following a name means that I believe that the Record Keeper made a spelling/typo error in writing down the incorrect first name.
