2
4/9/2025 18:52:56After school Is there an after school program? Not sure how to answer this question. There are many programs, teams, and clubs that meet after school at Lowell. But, in regards to any particular program, we need more information from you to answer more accurately.
3
4/9/2025 18:57:32All Courses for All GradesIs there a published list of all available classes for all four years at Lowell in order to understand the sequence?Yes! Here is a link to a list: Course Offerings 2025-26 and here's a spreadsheet with more details about each course: Fall 2025 - Course offerings by Grade
4
4/9/2025 18:47:32APWhat kind of AP classes are there? Here is a list of all courses offered at Lowell: Course Offerings 2025-26
5
4/9/2025 18:48:36AP classesWhat are the benefits of taking AP classes?AP classes are college level coursework, and prepare students for success in the AP exams administered by the College Board every year. In recognition of the challenging work, grades of C or higher in an AP class are given a "GPA Bump" of 1 point by UC and CSU schools (along with most other colleges and universities), and count for an extra point when calculating GPA for college admissions (this only applies to AP classes taken in 10th-12th grades. 9th-grade courses are not included in GPA calculations for college admissions). Students who get a score of 3 or higher on AP exams are eligible for college credit from most colleges and universities as well.
6
4/9/2025 18:54:24AP classesWhat are the available AP classes for 9th graders? The only AP class available to 9th graders is AP Human Geography.
7
4/9/2025 18:47:25AVID or other elective classesWhat period does AVID occur? Or is it after school? We are not sure yet what period the two AVID 1 sections will take place, but it will be sometime between block 2 and block 6.
8
4/9/2025 18:48:02AVID or other elective classesIn addition to AP Human Geography, are there other 1 semester courses available for Freshman? The guide listed Marine Science, Dance, and Critical Thinking. Each year we are limited by our budget and staffing in the electives we can offer. This year, the only 1-semester elective available to 9th-graders is AP Human Geography.
9
4/9/2025 18:48:06AVID or other elective classesDo I understand you correctly that if we do AVID in 9th grade, we cannot choose a language class or any other elective? How about getting a language class - that means no other elective? Thank you. That is correct. Because of the limits of a 7 period school day and all of the courses required for 9th-graders, there is room for a single 1-year elective course for 9th-graders.
10
4/9/2025 18:48:14AVID or other elective classesIf a student takes avid, do they take no other electives in 9th grade? That is correct. Because of the limits of a 7 period school day and all of the courses required for 9th-graders, there is room for a single 1-year elective course for 9th-graders.
11
4/9/2025 18:49:07AVID or other elective classesDo you have to be familiar with Human Geography to take the AP human geography that is offered? You do not, but you should be interested and you should be a strong reader.
12
4/9/2025 18:49:16AVID or other elective classesIf you take AP human geography in freshman year, do you get a bump in gpa? However, the AP designation does appear on the student transcripts when students are applying to colleges.Good question! UC/CSU do not include 9th-grade classes in their GPA calculations, focusing instead on classes taken in 10th and 11th grade. For that reason, no classes taken during 9th-grade are eligible for the "GPA Bump" for UC/CSU, since they are not factored into GPA calculation for CSU/UC university admissions.
13
4/9/2025 18:50:57AVID or other elective classesIf you are taking Study Skills as part of your IEP in middle school, is AVID the equivalent in high school, or is there a separate Study Skills elective in HS?Students with IEPs will have a separate Study Skills class with their case manager included in their schedule. Case managers work directly with the counseling department to schedule courses for students with IEPs, and students with IEPs get priority enrollment in elective courses, since their other courses may limit availability otherwise.
14
4/9/2025 18:52:38AVID or other elective classesIf I take the AP human geography class would the points be transferred/saved on my transcript if I move out of SFUSD/San Francisco All classes taken at Lowell and grades earned will be included on your transcript that will be sent to your next school should you transfer. How credit is given depends on the policies of the receiving school.
15
4/9/2025 19:02:47AVID or other elective classesCan you take more than one elective per year?Yes! Each year you will have fewer required classes and more space for electives in your schedule. 9th graders have 6 required classes and space for 1 elective. 10th-graders have 5 required classes and space for 2 electives. 11th graders have 3 required classes and space for 4 electives. 12th graders have 3 required classes, but 2 of those include 1-semester options, leaving space for 4 or 5 electives.
16
4/10/2025 9:02:59AVID or other elective classesIs there a 4 year commitment to Avid. Whatrequires an interview. What are the selection criteria (interested students are interviewed to determine acceptance) based on?When you sign up for AVID you are only commiting for that school year. It is highly encouraged to take AVID all 4 years because of the data we have showing student improvment, college acceptances, and most importantly college retainment is much higher for students that have stayed in the program for multiple years. The selection criteria looks at family educaiton history, student achivement and attendance history, student interest in school, desire to attend college, and more.
17
4/10/2025 9:56:06AVID or other elective classesWould it be possible to take AP human geography and a world language or would you be limited to just one You could take AP Human Geography for one semester, opposite your one-semester health class and then also take a World Language for you elective.
18
4/9/2025 18:48:30BlockWhat is a Block? is it similiar to Period in Middle School? Yes, it is basically the same as a period. Here is a link to the Lowell Bell Schedule (next year's should be the same or very similar): 2024-2025 Bell Schedules
19
4/10/2025 13:31:16Ccsf or sfsu classesIs it possible to take ccsf or sfsu classes during open blocks in junior and senior years?Yes it is possible for CCSF. You'll need to work with your counselor for preapproval. We do not have a dedicated program with SFSU.
20
4/10/2025 19:08:34ClassesHow is it possible that one semester is six classes and another semester is seven classes? Does that mean you lose/gain a class? Would that class be an extra elective? If you have 6 classes one semester and 7 classes for another semester, then you will have a free block that you can use in whatever (school-appropriate) manner you would like. If you would like to fill that slot with an elective, and if you are a strong reader and interested in the subject, you can request to take AP Human Geography.
21
4/9/2025 18:50:48Classes in generalHow much homework is typically assigned to students each night? (How many hours each night essentially)The amount of homework assigned will differ, slightly, from class to class and teacher to teacher. But, generally, students should not be spending multiple hours per night on homework. Sometimes, at the beginning of 9th grade, the load can seem heavy until students get used to more efficient ways of working. If the load ever seems excessive, students are encouraged to talk to their teachers and counselors to find out what supports are available, because there are many.
22
4/9/2025 18:51:12Clubs or extracurricularsWhere can I find out more about the extracurriculars offered in 9th grade? The student run Lowell Student Association website has information about all of Lowell's clubs (link below). There will also be a club fair during orientation on August 11th, where representatives from different clubs will be available to answer questions. https://lowellstudentassociation.org/
23
4/9/2025 18:48:02Coding / electiveDo you have computer coding classes as electives? In what years can students take those?Yes! We offer Computer Programming A and B, AP Computer Science Principles, and AP Computer Science. All of these classes are available to students beginning in 10th-grade.
24
4/9/2025 18:54:28ComputersAre we issued computers? All SFUSD students are issued Chromebooks. SFUSD-owned Chromebooks are automatically updated by the district with all applications needed for district courses and exams, including state-required exams and AP exams.
25
4/9/2025 18:49:08English classesIs there an English sequence like there is for math? Yes: all 9th graders will take English 1, and take English 2 during their sophomore year. When they become juniors, students can choose to continue taking regular English and sign up for American Literature or they can take AP English Language and Composition. During their Senior year, students may take regular English and sign up for European Literature, or they can take AP English Literature and Composition. 4 years of English is required and they can only sign up for their grade level English.
26
4/9/2025 18:53:36Foreign exchange students Does Lowell consider foreign exchange students in 11th grade? If so, do they need to start school at the begining of the year?Assignment to SFUSD schools is handled by the school district enrollment office at the direction of the SFUSD board of education, and their criteria are subject to change. Availability of seats for transfer students shift year to year depending on enrollment. All potential transfer students to Lowell must - at minimum - meet all of the same eligibility requirements as students admitted in 9th-grade. While available space for transfer students changes year to year, in general there are very few seats available to transfer students at Lowell compared to other SFUSD schools, and almost always are only available at the beginning of the school year.

4/9/2025 18:47:49General How and when do we submit schedule preferences. Now! use this form and submit by next Friday, April 18th: https://forms.gle/D7E9W3j3icu5mDcU8
28
4/9/2025 18:48:09general question Can you take a language and an elective in 9th grade?9th-graders have space in their schedule for one elective class. Elective classes include World Language classes, Visual/Performing Arts classes, AVID, and Yearbook. Only one class from these categories can be taken during 9th-grade. That said, 9th graders who are stong readers and are interested in the subject can take a one-semester AP Human Geogrphy course opposite their Health course. AP HuG is an elective.

30
4/9/2025 18:48:22General question for the counseling departmentCan we get acess to our counselor before entering Lowell, and if so can they help us with figuring out what courses to take?Counselors are not assigned until the beginning of the school year. It is a good idea to discuss course selection with your family and with your middle school counselor if possible.
31
4/9/2025 18:48:41General question for the counseling departmentIs course selection all done via StudentVue? And what is the deadline? For 9th-grade, submit your course requests via this form by Friday, April 18th: https://forms.gle/e381P8ZkKxekrvXU8 For 10th-12th grade, course requests will be submitted in February through StudentVue
32
4/9/2025 18:50:10General question for the counseling departmentDo rising 9th grade students meet with counselors prior to the first day of school (via zoom), or are they put into a “draft” schedule and the student changes things during the first couple weeks of school (in August)? With over 2,700 students, our counseling department does not have the capacity to meet 1-1 with students before school starts. All course requests submitted will be used to create student schedules. Students who wish to request changes to their schedules for errors (e.g. missing a graduation requirement class, placed in the wrong level of a language class) will be able to submit a form during the 1st week of school. Students who wish to request a change based on their preference will be able to submit a form during the second week of school, but we have limited capacity to accommodate changes based on student preference.
33
4/9/2025 18:50:13General question for the counseling departmentCan students take CCS courses freshman year and if so, how?No unless it is through the Early College advanced language program for middle school immersion schools in Mandarin and Spanish. CCSF requires students to have 120 units before they can take classes.
34
4/9/2025 18:50:19General question for the counseling departmentHow much counseling is available per student? Each Reg (Homeroom) class will be assigned to a counselor, and students will stay with that same Reg and counselor for all 4 years. The majority of work counselors do with students is done during visits to Reg, but counselors are also available for 1-1 sessions during student lunch and during office hours. Each counselor is currently assigned to 12 Reg sections, 3 at each grade level.

4/9/2025 18:51:50General question for the counseling departmentCan the student set an apt to see their counselor to review their classes if it match for the student or just random selected the classes. Unforunately we do not have the capacity to meet with incoming 9th grade students prior to starting high school.
37
4/9/2025 18:53:10General question for the counseling departmentMay my child get a Gmail account asap? There are resources online that require authentication. This is not within our control. This is a district DOT constraint.
38
4/9/2025 18:53:30General question for the counseling departmentWhat kind of support is provided to 9th graders at the beginning of the year to help them go around the school and find the right people to talk to?During Orientation in August, peer mentors from 11th and 12th grade will work with students in their Reg groups and introduce them not only to the different areas of campus, but to the different offices and support personnel. These same peer mentors will be visiting Reg classes during the first weeks of school to continue orienting students to life at Lowell. Students will have the same Reg teacher all 4-years, and Reg activities during the first 6 weeks of the school year are focused on getting students acquainted with the resources available at Lowell.
39
4/9/2025 18:54:26General question for the counseling departmentWhen do the students actually select their electives for their schedules? You can request your courses starting now, through next Friday. Please use the Google Form to select courses.
40
4/9/2025 18:54:43General question for the counseling departmentIf my kid takes 3d year language in 9th, can he take AP in 10th?Yes if the student has passed year 3 of the language with a C or higher.
41
4/9/2025 18:55:08General question for the counseling departmentHow do we know if our schedules meet graduation requirements? The 9th grade schedule provided at Lowell meets graduation requirements.
42
4/9/2025 18:55:42General question for the counseling departmentWhat happens when I select AP geography and it’s only for one semester. What course do I select for spring semester?AP Human Geography (AP HuG) is available for both fall and spring semesters. If you choose to take an AP HuG class, it will be placed opposite your Health class in the open semester. Which semester you take either class (Fa HuG/Sp Health or Fa Health/Sp HuG) is based on random selection.
43
4/9/2025 18:56:48General question for the counseling departmentAP geography is only for Fall semester, what do I select for spring?AP Human Geography (AP HuG) is available for both fall and spring semesters. If you choose to take an AP HuG class, it will be placed opposite your Health class in the open semester. Which semester you take either class (Fa HuG/Sp Health or Fa Health/Sp HuG) is based on random selection.
44
4/9/2025 18:56:54General question for the counseling departmentWhat is the A-G requirement? How is it same/different from UC requirements? It's the same thing. The letters A through G represent the different subject areas of the UC requirements.
45
4/9/2025 18:57:03General question for the counseling departmentIf you don’t do a language class or elective class can you do an extra math science or english class? No. Students cannot double up in a subject for 9th grade.
46
4/9/2025 18:58:06General question for the counseling departmentAfter the course request form is submitted, can it be changed? No. Any changes after the form is submitted will have to occur when students receive their schedules on the first day of school.
47
4/9/2025 18:59:05General question for the counseling departmentAre the students assigned the same counselor throughout all four years? And is there a separate college counselor?Yes counselors are assigned to registries and the student stays in the same registry for 4 years. Each counselor can support in college as well. We do not know yet if we will have a dedicatd college counselor.
48
4/9/2025 19:01:06General question for the counseling departmentWill homeroom be the first class we have on the first day of school? And what information will we get during that time?Yes. For the entire first week of school, students will begin each day in Registry (Homeroom) where they will receive important announcements, be able to ask questions, and receive any schedule changes that might have been made as a result of submitting schedule change request forms. Course schedules will be available online through StudentVue the week before school begins, but students will receive a paper copy of their finalized class schedule in Reg the first day of class.
49
4/9/2025 19:01:09General question for the counseling departmentAm I allowed to switch classes after the first semester? How are the credits counted? Unless a class is designated as a 1-semester course, it is a full year class. Students receive 5 credits per semester for all classes in which they receive a grade of D or higher. Classes required for graduation in which a student receives a semester grade lower than C are eligible for credit recovery. Credit recovery classes are semester equivalent courses.
50
4/9/2025 19:10:08General question for the counseling departmentWill our child be assigned a specific counselor? Is the class request form first come first served or are all Compiled after 4/18?All students are assigned to registry (aka homeroom). Counselors then are assigned to registries and follow the registry for 4 years. The course request form is not first come first serve so take your time.
51
4/10/2025 7:59:50General question for the counseling departmentIf my student has a 504 plan, when/how should we speak with the counseling department to make sure that Lowell has it, is aware of it, and that we are able to implement it?There is a question in the Course Selection form to allow you to upload the 504 Plan.
52
4/10/2025 9:15:51General question for the counseling departmentMy student is taking Algebra 1 in 8th grade. The College and Career Readiness SFUSD team informed me that their team will provide a list of students that have passed the course by June 4, 2025 to high school counselors at the end of the school year for high school enrollment. Do we still need to upload documentation or transcript in the form link shared? We still need you to indicate that you completed and passed the course on the form, but uploading the transcript is optional if you took the course through a SFUSD school or program. We will amend the form to make that clear.
53
4/11/2025 7:27:19General question for the counseling departmentCan you please confirm that if I take level 3 of a language class in 9th grade, the UC admissions will "count" that in the same way as if I had taken 3 years of the same language in high school? Without any difference in preference for one situation over the other? That is correct. Passing grades in level 3 "validate" 3-years of competence, thus fulfilling the recommendation for 3-years of World Languages if the student earns a C or higher at the semester.
54
4/9/2025 18:56:37Getting a Waiver or Exemption for Required CoursesIf my child wants to take more electives but there is just not enough time, can we get a waiver or exemption from the required courses? For example, if my child knows a lot already about Health, can my child be tested out of this requirement? For Ethnic Studies, with the Trump administration in place for the next 4 years, will this even make sense to take anymore? By removing this course requirement, it gives the kids more time for other electives that are geared towards their major/career choices. At this time, the state of California and SFUSD graduation requirements include Ethnic Studies and we are required by law to provide all courses necessary for graduation, so we are unable to remove that requirement from our course offerings or expectations. Health is similarly a graduation requirement. Any changes in these policies or requirements are not decided at the schoolsite level.
55
4/9/2025 18:49:41GuidanceIs it asking a lot of a 9th grader to already know what they’d like to major in for college? Is that required? Is there guidance to help kids figure out who they are and what they are passionate about? No 9th grader is expected to know what they want to major in in college. And, most that think they know change their minds over their four years in high school. At Lowell, students will spend time in 9th-grade exploring different college and career options as part of Plan Ahead, our College and Career curriculum. We have a College Center on campus, and counselors as well as College Center staff conduct workshops and events focused on college and career options throughout all 4 years of a student's time at Lowell.
56
4/9/2025 18:48:16HealthCan Health be taken a different year besides freshman year or taken in the summer? No. Health Is a 9th grade requirement for scheduling.
57
4/9/2025 18:48:46HomeroomHow do homerooms/registry work? Each student is assigned to a Reg when they enter Lowell, and they will stay with that same Reg teacher and class for all 4 years. Each Reg has a counselor assigned who will be the counselor for all of those students for all 4 years. Reg is held twice per week, and that time is used for presentations, workshops, and distribution of important information.
58
4/9/2025 18:50:24HonorsAre there honors classes for 9th grade? And if so, are there placement exams for them?SFUSD does not allow for any Honors classes in 9th grade.
59
4/9/2025 18:51:05LifeWhat if I already struggle to keep up in middle school with things like sleep and homework, and Lowell starts earlier, making me get up earlier? You do not need to take a Block 0 class, so school could start at 8:40 for you. If that is problematic for you, then I would suggest that you begin to practice going to sleep earlier and making sure that you spend plenty of time away from your electronic devices, especially at night. When you get to high school, you will not be the only person who struggles to stay organized and/or to keep on top of your homework. The most important thing is going to be your willingness to do things differently, to work on changing your old habits.
60
4/9/2025 18:54:23LunchIs lunch available to students or do we have to submit a request ahead of time?Lunch is available to all students at SFUSD schools and will be included in EVERY student's schedule.
61

62
4/9/2025 18:47:10Math classesWhat is a transcript and where do I get it from?See your middle school counselor.
63
4/9/2025 18:47:12Math classesWhat if I already took Geometry too?If your Algebra 1 and Geometry are UC-Approved, then you can take Precalculus or Precalculus Honors in 10th grade after Algebra 2 in 9th grade.
64
4/9/2025 18:47:14Math classesIs it okay to take algebra 1 at a city college?CCSF does not offer Algebra 1.
65
4/9/2025 18:47:15Math classesCan you take AP Calculus in 11th grade?Yes, we allow 11th and 12th graders in AP Calculus AB & BC.
66
4/9/2025 18:47:16Math classesHow do we get transcripts from SFUSD middle school for math? And at what time? In the summer? See slide 21.
67
4/9/2025 18:47:21Math classesDoes reporting my whole school year report card cover my 1 year of Spanish and 1 year of algebra 1We require all students to answer questions on the math Google Form. We will make it option for SFUSD middle school students to upload their fall and spring report cards, however it will be helpful. Note that middle school grades do NOT count towards graduation; they are used for placement only.
68
4/9/2025 18:47:22Math classesIf you have already taken algebra 1 and geometry, is it required that you take geometry again in 10th grade? If your Algebra 1 and Geometry are UC-Approved, then you can take Precalculus or Precalculus Honors in 10th grade after Algebra 2 in 9th grade.
69
4/9/2025 18:47:22Math classesWhat if you have already taken Algebra 1 and Geometry?Refer to this document for options available to students who have credit for high school level math before 9th-grade: Lowell High School Math Course Requirements and Placement Policies
70
4/9/2025 18:47:22Math classesWhat if you’ve taken geometry already?Refer to this document for options available to students who have credit for high school level math before 9th-grade: Lowell High School Math Course Requirements and Placement Policies
71
4/9/2025 18:47:26Math classesCan I place out of algebra 2 in freshman year?Probability and Statistics would be your only option besides Algeba 2 or 1. Precalculus is restricted to 10th grade and above. AP Calculus is restricted to 11th grade and above.
72
4/9/2025 18:47:31Math classesIs it possible for 9th graders to take Geometry instead of algebra 2?Yes, but we do not recommend it. We want to make sure all students have a year's worth of Lowell's Algebra (be it 1 or 2) before those crucial foundational skills are tested in Geometry. In our recent experiences, we have seen many 9th graders in Geometry struggle due to weak Algebra foundation. This is why we are making the switch to 9th grade Algebra 2 instead of Geometry for incoming freshmen who have already taken Algebra 1.
73
4/9/2025 18:47:40Math classesWhat is the success rate for each of the Math pathways? The 9th Grade Algebra 2-->Geometry -->Precalculus-->AP Calculus pathway existed at Lowell for decades prior to 2015, at which point Algebra was removed from SFUSD middle schools and from 2015 to 2023, we had to place almost all freshmen in Algebra 1, and only students who passed the district's Math Validation Test could take Geometry in 9th grade. I (Mr. Hoffman) taught the Geometry and Calculus components of this sequence for many years, and I can tell you it was very successful. Students who take all 4 of these courses at Lowell will have an extremely solid knowledge of mathematics.
74
4/9/2025 18:47:40Math classesAre there any online courses for Algebra 1 that are recommended or preferred To get the best learning experience, take your classes at Lowell. There is no online course I would recommend above our courses here at Lowell. I do not know much about specific online courses, but I do know that in general they are weaker than the in-person, full year course you would get at Lowell.
75
4/9/2025 18:47:42Math classesDo you submit your own transcript to get to Algebra II or does it come from SFUSD/middle schoolWe require all students to answer questions on the math Google Form. We will make it option for SFUSD middle school students to upload their fall and spring report cards, however it will be helpful.
76
4/9/2025 18:47:42Math classesWhat does the math track look like if you have already completed algebra 1 and geometry in middle school? If your Algebra 1 and Geometry are UC-Approved, then you can take Precalculus or Precalculus Honors in 10th grade after Algebra 2 in 9th grade, then AP Calculus and/or AP Statistics in 11th/12th grade.
77
4/9/2025 18:47:42Math classesCould I take Algebra 1 and Geometry at the same time through out my freshman year.We do not allow "doubling up" with Geometry & Algebra 1 or 2 in 9th grade. You can "double up" with Algebra 2 and Geometry in 10th grade.
78
4/9/2025 18:47:48Math classesHow difficult is would taking an in person geometry course in the summer? Very difficult, and not recommended.
79
4/9/2025 18:47:51Math classesWhere do we submit the Algebra transcript?See slide 21.
80
4/9/2025 18:47:53Math classesWhat math classes would be provided after ap calc if we are ahead in math and also skip math classes. We currently have AP Statistics, and some computer courses. I hope, if the district allows, we can offer more options.
