Natural disasters Dataset - v3 via Gapminder
2
About this fileThis file has multiple sheets with data for one or more indicators used by Gapminder. In this sheet below you'll first find an overview of the indicators (measures) and the list of underlying sources. The actual data we use, is found in the sheet(s) labeled "data-...".
This file is also a documentation of the data process. To follow how the data was transformed from the original sources, start in the sheet to the far right, which holds the input data. You can then follow the process step by step, by looking at the formulas in the sheets from right to left, until you reach the output in the "data-..." sheets.

1Natural disaster deaths per yearThis is the number of deaths from all natural disasters. The data includes all categories classified as "natural disasters" (distinguished from technological disasters, such as transport, industrial accidents,etc.. and complex disasters which include some major famine situation for which the drought were not the main causal factor). This includes total deaths from animal accident, droughts, earthquake, epidemic, extreme temperature, Flood, Fog, Impact, Insect infestation, Landslide, Mass movement (dry), Storm, Volcanic activity and Wildfire.number of natural disasters deathsdeathsndisasd_totmeasure2

Dataset description:Gapminder has copied data from EM-DAT The International Disaster Database (http://www.emdat.be/) with estimates of the number of deaths from natural disasters for all countries since 1900. These estimates include the following disaster types (as described here http://www.emdat.be/classification): Animal accident, Drought, Earthquake, Epidemic, Extreme temperature, Flood, Fog, Impact, Insect infestation, Landslide, Mass movement (dry), Storm, Volcanic activity, Wildfire
Gapminder summed all death toll from these types of natural disasters for all countries to a world total per year. However as an epidemic may be controlled easily under certain circumstances and thus not turn into a disaster, we have also summed all tool from natural disasters excluding epidemics for all countries ro a wolrld total per year. To create the per capita version of this, we divided the numbers by the world population, average of the period, based on Gapminder Population v6.
As disasters don't strike at an equal amount every year, the annual chart looks very uneven. To see the big picture more clearly, we calculated the average disaster deaths per decade, both in terms of death toll and death rate per million people. You can follow these calculations from the sheet to the right to the output in the sheet called Data world decade.

For developersIf you like the data we use into your own products, it's better if you fetch data from our standardized gitHub repo on https://open-numbers.github.io
These spreadsheets are part of Gapminder's data compilation process and allow end users to track how we combine data.
