Overall, a well produced test. Horse shows athletic ability and rider tactfully creates forward energy. Work to allow more freedom and develop more swing in free walk. Also, work to create smoother transitions, with less bracing in reins.

Highlights of Test: A confident rider on a talented horse that shows potential for higher levels. Walk rhythm is good.

Points to Improve: Horse is developing confidence in rider's aids, but shows some signs of tension, mainly through connection. Shows a slight tilt and not as reaching to bit when working to left. A bit anxious in departs.

Things to Try: First of all. The walk is so good that you should use it as a reward to help the horse stretch and relax in your schooling.

Normally I would mention that your hip could be more open and hands are a little high, but, this a lower level and I would expect it to be a green horse that still has "moments" of loss of focus. You are in balance and your aids are helping the horse throughout the test. I appreciate you taking time to put the horse back into the canter when it broke gait, as it seems to worry about departs.

The tension in connection might come from the need for more suppleness left and right. I would suggest patterns, such as serpentines and figure eights, to help the horse change from one flexion to the other and back again. For head tilting, keeping the horse more supported on the outside rein (and leg) may help and I would recommend introducing leg yields, if you haven't done it before. For all exercises, the leg aid is more important that the rein and keeping the horse's head and neck straight in front of the body is better than creating an overbend.

The tension should be reduced as the horse gains confidence. If the tension and unsteadiness in bridle becomes worse, I would check for anything that might cause pain. (teeth, tack fit, possible back problems)

I truly enjoyed watching this test and feel that you are setting the stage for success. Good Luck! Charlotte Trentelman
