The Passport is a college program in which all coursese are transferable and satisfy 16 credits of lower-division general education requirements at any Virginia public institution (and many private institutions) of higher education. The Passport is a 5 course bundle and must be taken as a package, with a grade of C or higher in each course. The Passport is a component of the Uniform Certificate of General Studies (UCGS).

Student course selection should be carefully considered since the Passport is not designed to capture the complexities of individual programs of study at the four-year institutions. Students should be advised to take the Passport course that beste suits their intended program of study at the four-year institution.

There are additional course options offered at NRCC (either in-person or online) that will satisfy Passport requirements. If a student wishes to pursue taking an external course through NRCC, they must follow the MCPS external course request requirements and are responsible for payment.

AP courses can be used to satisfy some of the requirements if the student takes the AP exam AND receives a qualifying score - see AP equivalency tab below.

*Students transferring to UVA may need to submit a writing portfolio before being considered as having met the institution’s First Writing Requirement. If transferring credits do not satisfy the First Writing Requirement, UVA agrees to accept and apply credits toward student graduation requirements and students will be required to take an institutional writing course.

** MTH 161/162 and 167 should only be taken by students preparing for calculus or for four-year degree programs that require study in College Algebra/PreCalc. Precalculus may not satisfy general education and may not receive transfer credit.

NOTE: AP courses are not listed on this spreadsheet; however, they may be used to satsify requirements within each block depending on institution requirements. Institutions will use the following guidelines when reviewing credit for prior learning (CPL): 1. The credits awarded at the 2-year institution for CPL will satisfy the appropriate general education requirement at the receiving institution. This does not necessarily result in credits being awarded. 2. Credits awarded for courses post transfer that apply towards meeting prerequisite or degree requirements will be determined by the receiving institution based on the CPL score requirements or criteria at that institution.
