Liam Sosinsky3x District Champ all WESCO. 2x State Champion and All American. Academic All American3x I had the pleasure of working with Liam Sosinsky for the first time as an 8 and under swimmer. He was a scrawny little bugger! He had special feet that would turn out and do breaststroke kick automatically! But he struggled to do the freestyle and dolphin kicks that were typically much easier for most. A trick coaches would use is to put fins on such kids to help their feet straighten, but Liam’s feet would not be controlled, they would still turn outward. This kid could be a very good breast stroke swimmer if he worked at it.

Years later, Liam showed up at Kamiak High as a freshman. He had worked hard and was a top breaststroker in the state and nationally ranked. This was not a surprise as Liam was extremely dedicated, disciplined, and motivated. Placing 5th at the state meet as a freshman, 2nd as a sophomore, followed by two All American state championship swim his junior and senior years was not incredibly surprising for the reasons listed previously. I was, however, incredibly surprised at several other performances by Liam.

Going into 2013 State Meet we could almost pencil in 20 points for Liam’s 100 breast swim. The 200 IM, a race compiling all four of the competitive strokes, not so much. Liam had practiced extensively over the past many years on the positioning of his feet, for increased propulsion as well as for his dolphin kick to be legal in the butterfly. He improved considerably, but still not an easy task. Compared to most high school swimmers, Liam was an incredibly hard worker. His excellent training and sheer force of will earned him a 5th place finish breaking two minutes by nearly four seconds in that race. I was impressed! For realys, Liam helped our team to a second place finish in the medley with his outstand breaststroke leg. All swimmers may swim a total of 4 events in high school meets, no more than two being individual events. Liam still had one state swim available…

As alluded to above, 2013 was a strong year for Kamiak as State. Our Medley relay placed second, our 400 was first. Most of our hot shot sprinters had no more swims available, who else to put into the 200 free relay? Liam? NOT a sprinter! Well, we put him in it anyway and hoped for the best. He did not disappoint. His split was not the slowest of the four members and his split time was just off of the State cut in the 50 free. Impressive again!

Liam was maybe 5’9” and 155lbs, not an imposing athlete. If you saw him walking in the hall on the way to chemistry class, you would never know that he was an All American swimmer. He was only featured in an article once, and often mention as to what appeared an afterthought in local articles on swimming. Here are most of his top achievements not clearly mentioned above:

Liam’s medley relay breaststroke leg helped Kamiak to 7th, 3rd, 4th, and 2nd place finishes at State. Breaststroke; 5th, 2nd, 1st ,1st. He DQ in the 200 IM as a freshman. Those feet!! Then top 8 the rest of his years.

For his District meet accomplishments, in the breaststroke he was 3rd as a freshman, then a three time District champ and all WESCO. Liam had one District championship in the IM with a 2nd and 3rd pace finish as well.

Liam was a part of Kamiak’s 103 straight dual meet win streak during his four years at Kamiak.

What I sent to the Ev Herald in April of 2012:

You may remember Liam Sosinsky's 4a individual State Championship in the 100 breast stroke back in February. You may also have wondered how he ranks national with his age mates! Or not. But I will tell you anyway. Also, I will give data on a 12 year old boy who also is doing quite well! Both live in the Mukilteo area.

Liam Sosinsky swam at the Sr Sectional meet in mid March, a long course meter meet in Federal Way (High school is short course yards). He now ranks 16th in the nation in the 100 meter breast stroke and 6th in the 200 meter breast stroke for age 15-16. (the other boy chose not to swim for Kamiak)

Thanks!
