Supporting the Homeless in Chicago

Overview:
6
Thank you for helping us help others through this project.
7

So, what is this project? A group of like-minded people come together to create care packages for Chicagoland's homeless. We distribute the packages through shelters and by handing them out one-by-one when we see someone in need.

This project was originally started during Christmas 2015 by Greg, Turpin's VP, and his good friend Olive. At the time, it was something Greg and Olive did outside of their work. Greg and Olive both knit, so it was important to them that each bag include a hand-knit hat and scarf. Dale, Turpin's Founder, soon jumped on board and here we are! In 2015 we made 10 packages. In 2016 we made 25. In 2017we made 160, and distributed them quarterly. 2018 is shaping up to be even bigger with a broader impact.

How to Get Involved
13
There are a number of ways to get involved. Choose your favorite(s).
14

17
- Knit or Crochette hats and scarves. Ship to the address below.
18
19
- Donate yarn. Almost any type of yarn will work, except we've been advised to steer clear of 100% wool. Wool shrinks and that's not good. We can take yarn that you've just purchased or some that's been lying around the house and you'd like to get rid of. Ship to the address below. Note that we have to make items well in advance, and they take time, so please ship early!NOTE: This project is currently not a non-profit venture, and therefore is not tax deductible. For the long-term, we're looking into creating a foundation... stay tuned...

- Donate items. We have a wish list at Amazon here:

Or go to the other tab in this spreadsheet (labeled "Care Package Contents") and search for items you'd like to donate. In some cases, we're kinda picky about what's appropriate and what's not. The completed bags need to be manageable, so weight will always be a concern. So will shelf-life. Once you find items you'd like to donate, put your name and any other information you'd like us to know in the appropriate column. Note the quantity we need. If you can't provide all of them, include how many you can/will provide. We've found that shopping at the Dollar store (or similar) provides the biggest bang for the buck. Items must be delivered well in advance of the assemby day and may be shipped to:

- Assemble and distribute care packages. The next gathering date is shown on the other tab in this spreadsheet. Assembly will take place at Turpin's HQ is in Beverly. 1808 West 103rd Street
