Music Video Form & ConventionsContents analysis of 6 music videos)MVML terms Remember to reflect on the purpose of the task in terms of your learning. Also look again at the intertextual references - not the same as themes. If there are none, don't try and force it.Really good post and strong analysis of the videos. What's the learning you take from this in terms of some of the features of the media form (music videos)? Alway try and think how this applies to your learning and future creative work.Hoobastank - The Reason has clear intertextual references to crime / heist movies. Remember is the video drawing on other genres or recogisable ideas from other texts? Look again. Also look at the font size of column one - why so big?Oceans - Seafret clearly has reference to superhero movies and Kickass??? Otherwise really good analysis. I presume you can see some of the differences across genre in terms of edit and camera.I can't see the work because it links to your Google Drive. Save as a PDF and link in with a thumbail or image.Intertextual references needs looking at again. For example Church
ChaseAtlantic seems to be refering to heaven / hell - or at least haunted houses.
lateral scrolling - intertextual refrences Intertextual references needs looking at again. The high school teen flick and Dolph Lundgren is the fighter in ID video and is famous for boxer / fighter films (not that you'd get that ref because it's not part of your cultural competence)From amonst those videos do you see the clash of ordinary and extraordinary. The James Arthur song is very prosaic subject matter but the video & melody is very poetic. Excellent reference to forking paths narrative structure. Well done.I think in the SFG there is also a retro feel, old American high school romance (like Grease).

Detailed Music Video analysisDetailed contents analysis of 2 music video from different genre (Videos embedded)MV
Narrative terms - structure, ratio, type
Look again at the aethetics (in Muse ) and think about cinematography & edit. Be less general about the technique. The analysis of the muse video is a bit thin on the groud. Look at the cinematography & production design (mise-en-scene) how are these used creatively? There is intertextual references to Dr Strangelove's war roomPlease resize the embedded files so there is no horizontal scrolling. What elements of mise-en-scene are generic? What terminology (editing & camera) could you use? Also, please proof read.Great analysis of the Kodaline - what does, 'strong angled camera' mean? Try and use technical vocab when at all possible. Well done on the Katy Perry one - good observation about the falseness / plastic nature of the diegesis - is this part of the commentary on modern life? Not bad on Born to Die. There is an intertextual reference to a movie called - Wild at Heart. Also don't you think there is a element of her being trapped in a dangerous relationship? The grand tragic ending of the romance is fairly typical and also suggests the heaven's door sequence in the performance section.Ideologically there is a recurring theme seen in music videos about the joy of young love, despite the hate filled world. This could go into representation of star - eben though they're not in video.I think also there is a sense that the artist from the TV helps her see the unreal world. There is also a sense that she is subverting mainstram ideas such as marriage, work, social media... How does this reflect on her and how might her audience respond to these ideas? Do they too feel the same way about the world?Could you embed the videos? There are intertextual references: A film called 'Wild at Heart', the Sistine Chapel and going into the light. The sense in the video is that she is trapped in a relationship which is exciting but also dangerous (same theme as Wild at Heart). Really excellent analysis. I think the boxing is less about encoding violence and more about fighting and resisting authority through music. There is clearly a sense of confrontation and resistance to authority. Do you think the band would want to be represented as overtly 'violent' though? Can you embed the videos? Wild animals are not an intertextual reference! What about the 50s glamour movies, flashy premieres, maybe even a bit of cinderella. Also represents TS as a tragic figure who loves too much but is abandoned (fits her meta narrative). Its is 'bright and vivacious' however there is something sinister beheath the glittery facade. That all this is facile and meaningless - a hyperreal bubble. Good point about her seeking to break societal norms and there is clearly a rejection of grand narratives. Do you think there is an explicit criticism of Disney in this video and the mainstream ideology they sell us? I really want to see the Radiohead analysis! This is really important in terms of proving you get how music videos work!Good intro, but always try and reflect on the learning. In simple terms what does this research teach you? Do you think the ideal world as presented in KP Chained is a parody? A very good analysis - especially the use of the term Utopian. This is typically a sci fi theme, a seeming utopian world is revealed as dystopian.

Evaluation of Previous Student's Music VideoVideo embeddedMVwhat were the costumes....Western Cowboy hats and waistcoats, what were the locations? bit more description about specific moments but well done otherwiseVery well done - remember these when you're making your own video! In what ways does the performance reflect on the dancing and vica versa. How do you think they got that sense of controlled beauty and also the sense of tragedy?Clearly a video which acted as inspiration for you. A great evaluation. Well done.Do you think the contrast between the static (camera) performance and dynamic dance works well? Could they have done more with the camera?A little bit too general. Specific moments of really good framing, mise-en-scene, editing is what we're looking for.Can you be a little more specific about moments in the video in which you can see good techniques? At the moment it's too general. Just one eg per criteria is fine.Really good analysis of the technique. So a straight up performance video - but one done using a really interesting technique.I'm glad you identify the importance of close ups. However the phrase 'cleverly filmed' doesn't really say much. What were they doing with the camera to compose the shots so beautifully? Also, 'keeps the audience intrigued' is a bit flat. Once the shot has communicated the emotion then cut.Excellent commentary. I think we should discuss explore framing and composition. How is the shot composed? How did they position objects in the frame? How did they use depth of field as well as rule of thirds and lead space?Good work on framing you can see the composition, which is great. Also the importance of close ups. Excellent evaluation!I agree that the use of dust was great - aethetically pleasing and also adds dynamic movement to complement the dance. There is a sense of angst and inner turmoil in the video. How is this evident in the dance / performance - mise-en-scene section.Artistic composition' or 'professional / aestetic loo' don't say much. Be specfic - what did they do with the camera in order to create something beaufiful to look at? There is a sense of angst and inner turmoil in the video. How is this evident in the dance / performance So do you think the two slight zooms aid the narrative point - that he is locked in that gaol? What did they do with the camera to make it look so good? How were the shots framed to add meaning to the shot?

The rhythm is simple, but you need to annotate the sense of subject matter in the lyrics and also the tone and mood of the song (beat and melody). Posted in Uncategorised!. Must be given a category.

Analysis of mash up genreCollage of photos and commenataries on visual style (MES, editing, camera, location) of allocated genre.MVGenre termsReally good collage - however again. What are you learning about the conventions and genre?I think rebellious and edgy are right, but they are also reactionary and counter cultural. Youth is also key and as is the sense of rejection of mainstream ideas.Remember to reflect - after the content in the post. How will this task help you understand the generic conventions in your own work?Blog title too long. Otherwise great. Well done!I think with Indie there is always a sense of retro to their videos. Also the low key and cold colour pallette. Nature is also clearly a element they return to regularly.Needs some adjectives of the connotions encoded. It's young, colourful, stylish, slightly plastic, joyful, energetic, sexy...The hopeless wanderer are also on a journey. Also a slightly melancholy feel to the aesthetic. Do you agree?I think also that Punk is political. It's angry at the establishment and so attacks and reworks mainstream icons and ideas.Really good collage and reflection at the end - excellent! Not happy' is a bit weak. Heavy rock is angry, rebellios, counter cultural and borrow heavily from the horror genre which is equally subversive. Love the font, but think about the words again. What's that impage in the bottom right? Really good reflection on how to understand the genre. Can you use the terms a bit more - repertoire of elements, generic, contract, ideology...all helps.Using the word 'generic' in a genre anayisis is a bit odd. You need a few more comments on the recurring ideas, images, messages that are communicated in the pop genre. What about the colours and locations. Where do folk bands / artist perform? What sort of emotions do their songs evoke?
11
Shot ListVisual shot list x 10 of conventional shots from similar videos/genre/artistMVReally great shot list - but again - reflect on the learning and how you use this understanding creatively.Good comments on mise-en-scene but remember what's really important to you is to know what the camera is doing (framing and movement)A comment on the point of this - how does it help you understand how to make metal music video?Look again and think about DoF & canted angles. Often used in music videos.Did you notice the depth of field?Really good - in what ways does the energy in the camera match the energy in the performance and back drop?Great shot list and really good commentary, well done. A lots of them are filmed in a studio and with low key lighting, why did we put you on the field again?Really good analysis of the shots used. The editing is equally frantic and aggressive I'm guessing. The reflection is really good especially in terms of colour and focus on individual talent. What about the framing and composition? Remember you will be assessed on the aesthetics of the shot (thirds, DoF, contrast...)Excellent work. How much did the camera move? If it was mostly static does that imact on the energy in the video?Really excellent shot list and some great desciption of framing. There is also quite a lot going on in terms of the depth of field which is used to highlight / isolate / beautify the shot. Look up 'bokeh'.Really good - in what ways does the energy in the camera/edit match the energy in the performance and back drop? Good analysis - especially comments about pathetic fallacy. Also refer to the use of depth of field and look up the term 'bokeh'.

Moodboard - Star ImagePinterest of similar artist in genre of allocated genre.MV
Rep/Star Image terms
You're right, he is represented as rebellious and angry. However there is also an art to subverting cultural ideas and icons, which is what punk was.I did it my way was originally a Frank Sinatra song. Punk often recycles ideas in the mainstream and reworked them to be offensive and anarchic. A total rection of social norms. You need to delete the comments on the images and just add very brief analysis of the image being projects. When I say analysis I mean one or two adjectives only per image.Do you think there is also a sense of rebellious fun to the band? They were working class lads with attitude and were outrageous and controversial in lots of ways. How does this come through? Did you direct Hannah and Ruby to be a bit mardy to echo that Oasis image?star image terms in intro - metanarrative? and no adjectives in the pinterest? Good moodboard. Significant use of tight close up and high contrast. Also use of low key and back lighting. Finally I think what's missing is the sense of being organic / rustic.Great images - but what's the image? What ideas are regularly communicated about Beyonce and others? What are the messages, power, style, friendship, school...Great star image pintrest. I'm glad you've got this sense of brotherhood amongst the band. Also the mix of rural traditional folk with a more modern (urban) feel is interesting. So the mix of mills and dusty sofas with (old) London buses. I did it my way was originally a Frank Sinatra song. Punk often recycles ideas in the mainstream and reworked them to be offensive and anarchic. A total rection of social norms.I like the images but think about the star image connotations. There is a sense of rural and urban (traditional in both instances). Also the sense of retro is evident as is the sense of brotherhood. I like the images. Heavy metal was and is anti establishment, rebellious, anarchic, raw... There is also a sense of brotherhood - typically its a very male genre. Also a strong emphasis on autheticity of performance.Use the terminology: metanarrative, ordinary / extraordinary paradox star image... in your introduction. Some really good comments on some of the images, but some are a little discriptive. Remember the star image is a set of values, attitudes & beliefs which are strongly associated with the star through the combination and synergy of their metanarrative.Great images - but what's the image? What ideas are regularly communicated about Beyonce and others? What are the messages, power, style, friendship, school, youthful joy, excitement...Really good moodboard. There is a sense of brroding melancholy to his metanarative. Do you think think this echoes in his music?

Production Meetings AgendaYour aims for the shoot. A PDF of the completed agenda.MVDon't like the embedded PMA. Also seems very brief - was it or am I not seeing it all? If it was brief did it hinder filming day?In retrospect was the PMA as comprehensive as you might have liked?Reflect again on the function of a PM - also in retrospect was is effective?Really good agenda. Evaluation of The Mash UpComments on planning, production and post-production of video – Q + AMVcan you get some star image and genre terms in a couple of places? but otherwise greatGreat evaluation. You're right the lip sync has got to be right in the performance. Watch random spaces in the blog - looks ugly.Excellent point about directing the actors. That will be especially important in your sequence, when you are getting them to do quite intimate things. Really good reflection, well done. I know your video is very different, but clearly there are some broad lessons that you can take from the mash up.Will you run test shoots on location and with lighting? Do you think that you're attiude & manner behind the camera will have an impact on your performers? What is the effect of poor (mumbled) lip syncing on the video? Do you think that mise-en-scene helps actors get into role?Do you think you will run test shoot for the real thing? What helps is to give the performers a target for their eyes to look at otherwise they wander. Excellent point about praising the actor to keep their confidence up. Not sure if black and white is so conventional, but you're right they do go muted colour and high contrast. A good shot list means you get coverage and don't have to worry on the day. How can you create a relaxed atmosphere on set where they can relax and throw themselves into the performance? Colour coding is really helpful to create an impact and show relationships - glad you're thinking about this.Do you think it would have gone better if you had tested the lighting / camera set up ahead of time? Do you think we should have had more focus on blocking camera / actors? To what degree do you think that mise-en-scene allowed the performers to relax and get in role? What impact does poor lip syning have on your response to the final product? Do you think you should split the director / cinematographer role on shoot? You do need someone to do some shouting - this is usually the 1st Assistant Director. Will you use lighting for your video? Why?/Why Not? test shootYou're right about the importance of the seemingly mundane PMA & Shotlist, had you thought about all the elements of composition before you went out filming? Great point about ther value of mise-en-scene in getting the performers into the zone! To what degree does poor lip syncing impact on the outcome of the video? Do you think test shoot for lighting and performance will help you during full production days? Also, with respect to Jon, how important is casting? At least twice? Remember Jack had two hours worth of coverage nd used two minutes! Look again at you editing target - it's vague! What additional features of PP do you need to master?Excellent point about the need to create a relaxed and enthusiastic atmosphere for the performer. Getting performers to show up is also a challenge! A disrupted shoot is hard to reorganise, especially if most people show up and waste their time. To what degree was good mise-en-scene important for the performance and quality of the shoot - were you happy with yours? You're right about the planning. Did you all have a clear idea about how to direct your actors and how to set up the shot? Why is the mise-en-scene so important? Good point about getting a good variety of shots. I'll be encouraging you to do test shoots before you get your performers, mise-en-scene on location to test your ideas out.

Initial ideas and pitch for my music videoFor mini pitch of own song choice + annotated lyrics + MP3 + extended step outline for narrative + moodboardMVWeek 4/5great start George.you will clearly be able to do this with your experience.you are relying on a lot of people though.are you planning on getting some footage this summer whilst the sun shiens? and my only concern is that you have uploaded the oroginal video and your ideas are quite similar.see if you can find an original twist for yours although the happiness one is good.I like the visual style though.can you find more adjectives for happiness though to annotate your lyrics and moodboard with? add in a couple of extra ideas of how you can represent happiness.are there any visual metaphors you can add in as a running theme throughout? happy feet, rising sun? etcI don't think you need to performer in the field? I love the idea of the word foreshaowing narrative, that works alone. So this will be a video of people having a great summer together? It seems a little darker and broody to me than that. Also has connotations of jealousy. Super repetitive - gonna be hard to get some shape / contrast out of the video, especially if it's just postcard pictures of people having a great time!I like the idea of the old man on the beach, but it needs more in terms of the flashbacks. What is he apologising for? Also is there a narrative resolution? Does the old man gain redemption? All a bit moot now that you've chosen a different song - so don't worry about making amendments. Except you should make sure your embedded documents do ot need horizontal scrolling!. Also please add some anotated lyrics to this post.Really good pitch materials - love the Prezi. Like the water link and wet band. I love the idea of water dreaming and the remenants that water leaves on the phycial landscape too. There are a significant number of risks associated with this video. I don't want to be too limiting at this stage, but if we do go ahead with this video, we're going to have to do thorough risk assessment which cannot be treated as inconvinent and boring admin. If you're not 100% behind doing this in a safe and conscientious way it won't go ahead!I like the visuals - striking - have you thought of using simple primary backlit sequences of the women? The lyrics feel a bit over annotated and illustrative of the video. Remember, you're not trying to illustrate each line of the song! The drum is really powerful in this song - any ideas of how to treat that?I think the annotated lyrics would be better in a separate document (PDF). I don't quite see the sinister side. I like the idea of one kid being left out / excluded but I don't get the nasty vengeance. It feels like it should be kids as well rather than (young) adults. The moodboard is good - but the graveyard and abused duct taped girl seems oddly out of place among all the beautiful / beach shots.I like the candy floss prinary colours. The tone is fun and upbeat, but the subject matter is a bit darker (jealousy and bitterness). Not sure if that's something you could explore - something which seems like fun but turns bad or turns bitter. I think also keep the video abstract - don't try and tell a story - just an idea of a story, a feel of a sunny day gobe wrong... A really good initial pitch, but needs a bit of developing (maybe in your group)."What about making your woman somehat feral / wild. The representation could be ambiguous is she the hunter or prey. I like the monchrome moodboard and the misty setting. Do you think we have a location like this in Guernsey, which looks genuinely wild? Watch Runnin, the running gets a little boring and needs contextualising.I love the image of the dancer exploding in dust. I also like the black box studio. We really need to work on lighting for that studio. I also like the piano in the studio. Is this a melancholy duel between a piano player and a dancer? Are the external shots necessary at all? Not sold on the tutu and pointes (don't you think this is a modern piece?) The classical ballet dancer is interesting...perhaps a metaphor or a link to a sense of fragility and impermanence... Some lovely ideas - but needs deveoping.I'm impressed you copied out the lyrics! The moodboard link goes to Extended SO. I like the paint and bright primary colours in the moodboard thumbnail and emphasis on dance is good! Glad you're thinking about lighting in the studio - are you thinking sepia (retro?). Does the paint start fun and become oppressive? The walking into the rain could be a great final image + the washing away of the paint? I am anxious about your locations. I disagree with Jack about Guernsey having no decent locations. However big open and essentially flat places are hard to make look interesting. Also I'm a bit unsure about that happens in the narrative. Is it an abstract exploration of 'Electirc Touch'? I also think you need to think about tone - ballet and light hearted relationship seem a little mismatched. BTW excellent materials and some really good initial thinking. The annotated lyrics are important. That will help give you a clearer sense of subect matter. It feels a little like you need to hone your thinking down a bit. I like the shifts in the song from ephemeral and soft to grungy and harsh. The mood board gives a sense of how that might appear in the performance. Needs a bit more development. Please start with the annotated lyrics and we'll talk on Monday.I like the contrast between your pianist and the guy in the hole filling with dirty water. Why have the piano outside (I think I read that) why not have a contrast in terms of location too? So a guy digs a whole, it fills with water and then he falls into it? It is disjunctive and I like it visually - practically would be hard. Could you get a bath?

Means your menu doesn't work. Also get rid of the ugly borders top & bottom on slideshow. You can do this by selecting small option when you embed. Otherwise great post. You're right about cleaning up paint - but the point is that you are going to have to reshoot several times. Paint will be a pain. Have you thought about other ways of introducing explosions of colour to your footage? Can you resize the embedded slide show? When you publish, make sure it's on small not medium otherwise you get big ugly borders top and bottom. The point about the waiter is good, although I think you might need other moments in the scene that also indicate it's repetitive nature - although keep them simple and watch out for continuity...!I love your Prezi and the use of music. Genre Conventions AnalysisA voicethread that describes the repertoire of elements (mise-en-scene, naratives and performance) of similar genre. MV
Genre - Altman
The guy in the blue shorts and deck shoes on the star image page is the least Indie (Rock) person I have ever seen! Really, the LEAST! Also avoid saying this like 'normal clothes' in analysis (mean nothing). The camera will often be artisticially framed. Don't rerecord but add amendments underneath.Good reference to the narrative of indie video. Do you think the disjunctive element is partially about communicating a sense of artistry (gentle / artistic soul). I like also that sense of being a 'unique individual', do you think that makes them conventionally unconventional? Also is the use of natural country is typical - very romantic / environmental. Sans Serif = modern / informal / young. Some really good observations about the genre. It's important for you to recognise that you have subverted expectations in your video design. It's in an Alt J sort of tone - a bleak narrative about tortured souls. So in this sense that bright vibrant look is not what you are going for. It's important that you make that clear in your essays and evaluation questions.Good point about the astract designs in digipacks, which are deliberately unconventional. Do you think there is a political anger in the genre? Also playfulness is an interesting feature of the genre. Excellent point about the band being 'equal'. In broad terms do you think the tone of indie is melancholy? Seems to be from your analysis of the visual style of videos.Good point about the astract designs in digipacks, which are deliberately unconventional. Good point about their ideology (individualistic) - can't that go into your audience profile? Are you sure their look is 'rustic'? Simple and plain in fashion. Also that comment on androgynous artist is interesting - although not 100% sure it could be described as conventional of the genre.Really good genre analysis. I really like the comments on the use of colour and editing to immerse the audience in the trippy life of the artist. Also that comment on androgynous artist is interesting. Could you look at the size of the embedded objects (on my laptop I can't see all the controls). Not sure where you get the idea of 'rustic' from ID! Rustic refers to old fashioned country style. Also not sure the graph was a great idea for the star image - interesting but a bit off topic. What does an indie rock star look like and what messages are the communicting? Style, edge, poetry, cool, passion, intensity...

Audience Ideologies Facebook page of audience who might consume you star / music genre. Based on YouGov Research + sniptool of the yougov profile page and terms from Hall and Blumler and Katz in the intro - individual taskMV
Audience - Hall, Blumer and Katz
Not sure about the profile image of your Bradford audience :) other wise good sense of who you are targetting. For the most part this is recycling what you read in YouGov, that's fine, however you also need to think a little more about her ideology (values, attitudes and beliefs). She feels like an independent woman with an artistic edge to her. She has a wide social circle and enjoys a bit of social scandal. Remember to use Uses and Gratification Theory in your intro. What about their media consumption page from YouGov? I think that will give you some more insights. Also how do they think, what do they believe in? Friends, parties, art, poetry, politics, freedom to be young and take risks, confident to live non mainstream lives, rebellious, somewhat subversive perhaps... Have you given it a category?I like your audience member, and you've got a sense of her in broad terms. Also the travel and itlian nights doesn't feel very C2DE.YouGov is not a google site. I'd like a little more background info and other bands / media they like. Also try and reflect on some of the theory in the booklet (Hall & Blumler / Katz). You need to think in terms of how the audience will use the media. Your star image pinterest is a bit lacking. A few more images from a wider range of media.Your moodboard for the star relies quite heavily on publicity photos. Whats about other media coverage? The metanarrative is made up of: reviews, lyrics, music videos, tweets, magazine articles... This will give you a better sense of her ideology / star image.A good array of images. However don't just analyse those. What about the words? How do those communicate a sense of personal angst and intensity? Remember the star image is constructed from an array of media / ideas circulated about the star - the images are good, but you should look to other media too.I'm interested on the moody brooding publicity images and the more relaxed and natural image of them out and about and at signings. What about the words in their lyrics, the bios on their website, their tweet / facebook? Test ShootsTest photos, footage of location and difficult shots to prove they are doableMVI love your use of the frame, breaking the rules of composition to communicate a sense of disruption / frustration / desire. I think this will be a really good way to shoot those glances...Interesting that you don't use the same wide shot of the whole band - why not?Can you look up camera settings for this? You might be able to play with manual exposure & ISO, to get a crisper image. Love the red footage.i really like the upsidedown shots - can we keep those? Do you think you had missed anything in the planning? Don't redo the agenda, just reflect on how that went.Good. The PMA is about making the shoot ru smoothly. Shoot Evaluation - PerformanceEvaluation of Performance shoot + targets +photos of shootMVWhat sort of shots were you aiming for and how far were you successful. What were you seeking to achieve in this shoot? To what degree did you succeed? An excellent evaluation. A shoot is at least 50% preparation and oranisation.I get the point - but having spare lighting is not practical. Did you test the equipment prior to the shoot? You can get some really nice tight shots in the photography studio. You can go wider in the drama studio, but it also carries it's own issues. Can you include an image in this post? I think all posts, should have something to look at or listen to included.Done in Drafts, pictures neededYour right about the importance of setting up before the talent arrives. It always takes longer than you expect. The statitic effect you mention is called 'noise'. I think though you are right to be positive about the compoistion, there is some good stuff there. Can you put in some image from the shoot or alternatively shots you are please with from the shoot?

Also 50 word reflection on the creative impact of these editing techniques.Really good post, with good illustrationsRemember markers can also help with rhythm. I think the tool is called time mapping - also Premiere Pro should have caps!Really excellent post, great images and reflection - well done.Well done, excellent detail and reflection.Great evaluation. Narrative PlanningNarrative sheetMVIsn't the girl the disruption to the narrative? Even if it doesn't happen to the end of the video - it's still the disruptive event. It's a narrative 'arc'. The significance is always in the complication and resolution as well as the conflicts (external or internal).I thought the resolution was the rejection of girl A by girl B. It's a tragic case of unrequitted love... A bitter sweet moment of young love and friendship.I'm sort of pleased you are writing up the theory - shows you are engaging with it and it will certainly help you learn. However only use it in so much as it applies to your narrative. The question is, does it? Are you telling a story or is this a disjunctive narrative? To what degree do you think you're telling a complete narrative? What's the superobjective - the big theme of your video? Also it gives guidance to your directing and editing. In the end - what is the message (theme) that you want the audience to take away?Well done a really good explanation of the narrative development. Now you've ditched the male actor will this change your theme?

Can you list them after the post, just to show you know what they are?I think the ECU on the eye does reveal something. She is stylish, extravagant, elegant... There is usually some meaning encoded - if not, don't mention it!The analysis is very detailed. Not sure about the 'normal' look. She is retro, consciously Victorian childlike in her look. There is an awkwardness and a confidence at the same time!Excellent analysis - I'm sure the image is a pastiche of a famous image of the Virgin Mary. A great post, well done.Good analysis, you've got the sense of the alternative / indie artiness of the design and also the romance of the pieceReally excellent post - great analysis too, with great attention to detail and nuanced analysis!Really good analysis of the Bad Suns digipack. Be careful with the word simplistic - it means making something complicated over simplified. Also what about the play on words being quite arty / indie too. There is a lovely surreal / artful image on the back, which seems counter to the front - do you think they get away with that imbalance in the design?I'm not sure about your analysis of 'rustic'! Also can you list the conventional features of a digipack on the blog post? Remember one of the assessment criteria is being conventional.

Evaluation Question 1Close analysis of conventions of professional textsEV
Conventions - Skills
The CU on playing instruments is also a celebration of skill, which indie audiences value. Remember to state the convention that typically performance is in a studio or stage, your setting is grimy and derelict, what does this communicate about your band? Great point about colour and what you did, not convinced with the why / impact, isn't is for symbolic and aesthetic purposes? OK on lead singer - but why are they so important in star image / branding / ideology? You're using the overlay for a very different purpose than the abstract cartoony look of the prof video. Good point about establishing shots - include something about audience positioning. I think colour is often used symbolically. OK about pain and misfortune (bit of an understatement) they are romantic (often tragically so) and sensitive. I would redo your star image comment - are they fun loving or edgy? Can they be both? Also, what does edgy mean - you are overusing the word. Why don't you show a screenshot of your split screen in the second edit convention? Symmetry is not just about showing who someone is - think about this! Refine your description of font! How does the print design reflect on the artist? An ad must have AIDA - the last A = action - where is this on your poster? Resize the embedded object to small to avoid ugly borders top & bottom. So the look of techno videos is increasingly natural - away from the club and into people's lives... Good point about editing speed / rhythm - remember the video serves the song - this is achieved by the narrative reaching a crescendo when the music does. Make the point in star image that this is unconventional - usually in music video star appearance and representation is everything! Still lots of slides to finish comments on and digipack / ad to complete. Please complete the music video element by end of the week and digipack stuff by Monday. So the themes are more abstract than conventional - less narrative info to get teeth into? I also think suits being ruined (with water) is an interesting anti establishment idea - very indie! In prof video cars = 'leading lines' You're misusing the present / absent idea - change this. I like the point about the colour palettes, you could identify main and accent colours too. The narrative point is good - something about symbolism and abstraction would be good to discuss here. Also your star is back lit, giving an angelic halo effect. Performance in CU = talent and skill - something the audience admire and want to see - they are authentic musicians. Just need to finish advert and digipakIdentify in each, which broad area of convention you are discussing in a larger title. Good point about control of the lighting. So what impact did static camera have and is this unconventional? Last point on B&W is...pointless! Remember what specific meaning did you wqnt to encode? I think you might make more of montage & ellipsis in editing. Also, what's the significance, the so what in your editing slide? So your theme is conventional - remember you need to say it explicitly. You need to do a bit more than light side / dark side! Nick it's not about making someone 'more visible', you've got to do more than that! Think star image, focus on talent and emotion, think connecting to the audience, also skill and admiration of skill from audience. I think in mise-en-scene, you should make more of the use of symbolic colour. Framing - it's not about practical decisions and keeping it lit. It's about what is typical and what you did to either use, develop or follow that typical pattern!Change the title of the SS to the question. On each slide be specific about the area of convention you are discussing (themes, lighting, costume...). Foreshadowing and use of pathetic fallacy are comment tropes of indie MV. Use the term 'symbolic code' and also Barthes in slide 2 of MV. Moments of realisation = 'epiphany' and sense of release / resolution (however tragic). I think strong female characters are conventional in indie narratives. NOt sure if you can argue wild animals are conventional! Human connections and relationships are a convention of indie. Print: Not sure about 'colourful and upbeat person!' stylish and extreme seems more to the point. Do you think you're image is almost too romantic to be indie? Why is the dance so significant? How does it communicate ideas / emotions? I think within themes, you need to be a specific, what themes are you going for which are conventional? Make the point about costume having symbolic meaning - you could drop in Barthes here & 'symbolic code'. So you're saying colour palette has symbolic meaning and so do your fairy lights - beyond being a motif in both perf & narr, what meaning do they carry? Good so you didn't give enough narrative info (what happens before / after) and thus it's a thematic video, rather than a narrative? I think in terms of location you are being unconventional - locations (cities, forests, lakes...) have cultural meaning you're locations lack this significance, why & what impact? Is there a green edge to your lighting in perf? Why and what's the meaning/impact? Symmetry = power!Glad you included your planning in the intro. Good point about unconventionally removing the star from the narrative; why are they conventionally a character in the narrative? There is symbolic meaning in costume and location, did you 'develop' the convention, I think rather you followed it. Low key / high contrast lighting is apparently expressive and thus able to communicate 'artistic' meaning. I think the costume, which is clearly at odds with the location, creates meaning and enigma (try and drop in some Bathes if you can). Great point about expressive camera, but then your analysis is what you didn't do...how did you use the camera in a conventionally cinematic / expressive way? Interesting point about family relationships being unconventional - do you do enough in the narrative to communicate that they are sisters do you think? Great on water - but your final sentence says very little - what meaning / impact does water have in your vid? Remember use Barthes if you can 'semic, symbolic and cultural codes' on the last slide you have opportunity here. You're making some specific points about themes in your video, which is great, does the amplification spring from the lyrical content in the song? I think the cross dissolves and overlays draws a link from the themes in the video to the narrative very well - conventionally, cross dissolves do this more than fade in/out from black. Narrative - linear narrative might not be complete, but they do show cause and effect, which yours doesnt! Do you think B&W is conventionally more arty as well as bleak? Mise-en-scene has symbolic meaning then? So use Barthes term 'symbolic code'. 'Generic in the genre'? Good points about camera, use the term narrative / audience positioning. Cinematography = meaning by using rule of composition and lighting. PRINT: Indies are romantics and the romantics had a sense of the vitality, immediacy and enormity of nature - I think this party explains its preponderence in their media output. Sans serif = informal and young. I think you should reference Rene Magritte as an inspiration for you digi pack. Ref the ocean (it's wildness / pathetic fallacy) and its thematic link to your video. Ad = AIDA, the last A being action - how does your ad call the audience to action? The lightbulb is a symbolic code then - it echoes the narrative and is about the destuction of purity. In terms of themes be more direct, they tend to feature tortured / artistic / sensetive individuals wracked by the human condition... Does fairy lights = retro effect? I get it might be a sepia old film type. Good point about fourth wall in camera, but don't get your previous point ' to tell them that this star will not be played around with again.' I think you should show the two contrasting representation of Lana del Rey too - show the ordinary / extraordinary paradox! I like the fairy lights point - it gives that sense of dark artistic sensibility and also a feel of lightness / youth / joy. Juxtapositions, we love em!Really good on camera in your work. Remember cinematography in videos is artistic and also variety gives pace and energy to the edit. Excellent on editing - did you use graphic matches or frame the star / character in the same way in order to underline the relationship? Narrative - emphasis the disjunctive / abstract / themeatic nature of narrative. Don't you think your use of colour does not follow convention - you're gone for something much more muted and low key. Make more of the androgony and gender fluidity - more than quirky and edgy; in this way it's a counter cultural, subversive genre. In terms of cinematogrphy, I think you could comment on the abstract nature of the image as another link to star image. PRINT: Remember AIDA - what is the purpose of the advert especially - don't be too thematic / arty, it is important, but so is AIDA. Excellent use of examples from your texxt throughout - slightly wordy though...Editing also, very directly links the narrative to the performance and aids the amplification effect of the narrative. Do you think you're more muted colours in the mise-en-scene is unconventional or do they better serve the tone of the song? Good point about the gender fluidity, are you emphaising this as part of your star image - he's unusual, rebellious, resisting labels and social norms. Do most performers address the camera directly - I think they might, so you off camera profile is more reflective and sensitive? You're using the analysis that it allows audience to engage with the character rather a lot - find a different angle. What are the emotions / symbolism you wanted to convey with the green paint? Themes - there is no reference to your video specifically. PRINT: Plastic beach is about creating a world for the Gorrilaz characters to inhabit - it's not randomly abstract!
