|10/1/2012 12:51:06||ALF||Pearltrees||www.pearltrees.com/alf_here||Yes, absolutely!||It's interactive interface is very interesting. It's fairly easy to use and offers a broad range of connections using URLs. You can connect to it with your Twitter and account creation is very simple. It'll automatically Pearl anything you link through Twitter and it can be linked to your Facebook, too, for the same results. |
To use it like we would Storify would be to create a new Pearl, then make "trees" connecting from that initial Pearl with the articles or Twitter posts linked to them. You'd have to number them, but each Pearl can be given a comment to tell a "story" with them, using the examples they give for the Help tips and How To Pearls, which are really helpful. There's also an easy web app that can be installed to your internet browser for fast, easy "Pearl adding" from your current page. It's almost like Pinterest, but with a lot more pizzazz and the flare of a cool interface and networking capabilities with its "Discover" feature.
|It takes some time getting used and only using URLs might be limiting when it comes to Twitter posts.|
|10/1/2012 16:13:49||Brittany C||Shareist.com||http://brittanycooper.shareist.com/wide-318/||Yes, absolutely!||This site is very similar to Storify in that it allows you to create a storyboard type page of content. You can add text, tweets, videos and URLs.||This tool isn't as visually appealing as storify.|
|10/1/2012 22:09:38||Brittany C||Themeefy.com||http://themeefy.com/Brittany_Cooper_111223/marching-band-season/||Yes, absolutely!||It has some of the same features as storify. It allows you to browse the web, youtube and twitter for articles to include in your "magazine".||It took some time to get it to publish.|
|10/1/2012 21:11:19||Spencer||redux.com||http://redux.com/spencerwoodstock/posts||Maybe||This tool allows more than one story option. For example you are allowed to post videos, pictures, episodes and links to files. It is a quality site for videos and shows.||Despite the sites pros, its cons are that it isn't quite similar to storify. Which means i wouldn't recommend it as a replacement. It doesn't let you use twitter in the same ways as storify would in order to build stories.|
|10/1/2012 12:32:25||Brittney H||Feedly||Feedly.com||Maybe||This app is great in finding blogs written by other people. What it does is pull blogs then you can pull the ones that pertain to you and follow these blogs. It is also available through Twitter, Facebook, and you can even download an app to your iPhone or i pad.||It does not seem to work like storify so I think we would have a hard time getting the same outcome that we were looking for. Also I tweeted them to see if they allowed backups of the information we gather and I have not heard back.|
|10/1/2012 12:37:42||Alyssa||BagtheWeb.com||http://bagtheweb.com/b/el7qjU/edit?new=1||Maybe||Easy to add links into the story.||Not aesthetically pleasing. Basically a list of links. You can add a title and a small thumbnail but pretty time consuming. Every time you add a photo it has to be uploaded and cropped.|
|10/1/2012 13:04:03||Claudia||Paper.li||http://paper.li/speakeratheart/1349110531#||Maybe||It's professional and clean as far as appearance is concerned. It was easy to navigate around the site.||I felt limited on creativity. I clicked four prewritten news stories and chunked them into my paper, and then I was finished. It looked very professional but I had no clue what the content would look like. I just knew the keywords and topics. It would be great for journalism majors but not sure about for writing in digital environment.|
|10/1/2012 15:56:59||Brittany C||Pinterest.com||http://pinterest.com/bcooper216/||Maybe||Pinterest is a very interesting tool that allows you to create "board" and "pin" articles and pictures that you find on the site. You can share them with your friends and create boards that allow all of you to pin on. It is like virtual scrap booking and would be very effective in planning things. I like the feature that allows you to scroll back to the top with the click of a button, because manually scrolling all the way back up is a tedious pursuit. You can also search the content of the site and it will show you boards and pins similar to that search||Pinterest is cool, but the content is mostly memes and funny pictures. There is a good selection of DIY and cooking pins but I can't see how this site would be necessarily educational or beneficial to the WIDE318 course.|
|10/1/2012 12:17:59||Alyssa||Loud3r: http://www.loud3r.com/||NA||Definitely not!||Nothing.||When trying to access site only thing that comes up is this error message: Error establishing a database connection. |
|10/1/2012 12:25:37||Roosevelt||http://www.aggregage.com/||N/A||Definitely not!||It creates communities around certain topics in the business world.||It's mainly for business media. It's not so user focused because regular users can only suggest topics.|
|10/1/2012 12:28:01||Adrian||http://keepstream.com/||N/A||Definitely not!||N/A||N/A|
|10/1/2012 12:32:01||Roosevelt||http://curationstation.com/||N/A||Definitely not!||Great marketing tool.||It costs $289 per month.|
|10/1/2012 12:32:24||Aaron||Blekko||http://blekko.com/tag/view?name=/student-technology&type=create||Definitely not!||It gathers good information over a wide range of websites that seem to be safe. The interface is easy to use.||It is very visually bland. I don't see a way to add my own text without using some kind of text file.|
|10/1/2012 12:32:55||ALF||Kurat/ NewsPin www.newspin.co||No curated collection could be compiled||Probably not.||How it works: |
From the site's own homepage--
Step 1: Set topics to follow.
Choose among 1000+ topics or configure one yourself
Step 2: Get the best articles.
We scan 500,00 articles per day and bring the best ones
Step 3: Post to your followers.
Post to multiple Twitter and Facebook accounts or let Newspin to post automatically
|Unfortunately, this service is still in beta. After logging in with my Twitter account and providing my email address, it went to "Step 3," which was to provide a beta invitation code. I have yet to receive the invitation code, which leads me to believe that it's not instant and new users will be randomly chosen to participate in the beta. |
Additionally, whereas Storify was completely hands-on and done by yourself, there seems to be a large degree of aspects to this alternative that are handled automatically. It says that it picks "the best ones" as far as articles pertaining to a topic you select, but there is no information as to what the criteria is for how it defines "best." Where does it get its articles? What are the markers for determining "the best"? These traits we don't know yet and can't evaluate because of its beta process.
|10/1/2012 12:33:02||Cody||Summify||www.summify.com||Definitely not!||Summify boasts over fifteen and a half billion aggregated social media stories and has a pragmatic user interface complete with a video of how to utilize their services. It spans multiple platforms (phone, web, etc.) and has rave reviews.||Unfortunately, despite having visually appealing services, their site shut down in June of this year and is no longer operational for new users. Tragic.|
|10/1/2012 12:34:13||Sheryl||http://www.yourversion.com||Does not allow you to do more than bookmark stuff and send links as far as I can tell||Definitely not!||Can search for generic phrases and pull up news articles, web pages. That's about it.||Glorified search engine, does not put things into collection as far as I can tell- only allows you to bookmark topics and send links to individual media that interests you.|
Cannot get friends feature you to work and cannot search for twitter usernames - twitter searches get very limited results.
|10/1/2012 12:35:15||Shena||www.curated.by||Can not speak German||Definitely not!||I have no idea. If I could speak German then maybe I would know.||That I can not read it. It looks pretty if that counts for anything.|
|10/1/2012 12:35:50||F.B.||Snip it||http://snip.it/||Probably not.||You can custom tailor from a multitude of stories published on a variety of topics. You can customize which kinds of stories you follow to create a snip it.||There is no commentary to be done on each snip or post. The stories do not show up in a line and are really just videos and images posted together like postcards on a cork board.|
|10/1/2012 12:39:01||Zach||Eqentia - http://www.eqentia.com/||N/A||Probably not.||I wasn't even able to make an account. I kept receiving an error message that said, "Oops: Error Handling Your Request - Sorry, there was a problem handling your request. You may be looking for some content that does not exist or we have made a small error on our end" when I tried to sign up for an account or log in. So I can't answer this question.||See the previous question.|
|10/1/2012 12:39:12||Cody||Story Crawler||www.storycrawler.com||Probably not.||You're first met by a visually intriguing design with a description of the service provided. It details the problem of information overload in a user-friendly format and then boasts that social media sites (like itself) are the solution. It is clearly detail-oriented and even has a Contact tab in case you have any questions.||It looks and sounds perfect, but there isn't a way to sign up for the service. Not only can I not find a means of viewing media aggregation 'stories' or creating an account, a quick Google search provided nothing about the site except the site itself. Apparently, the site does not accept new users but there's no way to tell for sure since nobody apparently knows anything about the site. I suggest Story Crawl-ing away.|
|10/1/2012 12:40:34||Dee||Amplify||http://www.amplify.com/company#intro||Probably not.||Despite the fact that this seems like a great tool, it was primarily meant for students ranging from K-12. It connects the student, teacher, as well as the parent.||The worst thing about it is the fact that it focuses on students K-12. What about college students?|
|10/1/2012 12:40:51||Aaron||bundlr.com||n/a||Definitely not!||Hmmmmmmmm............. It looks better than Blekko.||It only bookmarks websites. It does not let you "create".|
|10/1/2012 12:43:58||Claudia||Scoop.it||http://www.scoop.it/pricing/guided-tour#Free||Probably not.||It allows you to create an online magazine. It also has a education version for students and instructors.||The education variation of scoop.it requires a fee of 6.99/month. Also the free version of the site is limited on the features available. For example; basic text is offered for free users compared to rick text and links for paying members. |
Over all the site was cluttery in appearance and a bit complex compared to storify. The instructions and guided tour could've been a bit more clear on how to create and begin to curify. Also in order to "enjoy scoop.it", you should download the bookmarker. Again, I think this is a bit more involved compared to storify. I didn't feel motivated to attempt to make more topics after my first initial use.
|10/1/2012 12:43:59||Shena||http://www.blogbridge.com||Could not figure out how to create anything.||Definitely not!||The website gives you a lot of detail (pages and pages and pages) about itself.||I do not like the colors and design of the website, you have to download and click stuff furiously for minutes on end. After downloading and clicking stuff you then are falsely guided to an information page. Afterwards you are left with a sense of confusion and mild frustration. If there is even anyway to curate on this page, I obviously have not figured it out. It probably would be easier to get the ring to Mordor.|
|10/1/2012 12:44:23||Dee||http://pinterest.com/||Definitely not!||Nothing really||Seems to be too cluttered. This tool is similar to instagram. I|
|10/1/2012 12:45:21||Brittney||Clipboard||www.clipboard.com||Probably not.||Seems like a pintrest.com for tech people||It is a website that allows you to compile clips to a board. You can organize the different boards by what you want each one to pertain to. There is no way to create a story like we were trying to do with storify. It also wanted you to download a clip creator which I could not find anywhere even after I tried to download it twice.|
|10/1/2012 12:48:11||Adrian||postpost.com||N/A||Definitely not!||Nothing at all. Storify was a much simpler tool.||Complicated site, without any viable help options.|
|10/1/2012 12:48:14||Zach||Delicious.com - http://delicious.com||http://delicious.com/zachgowan||Definitely not!||I'm still rather confused about how to use this tool, but as far as I can tell, it lets you build a feed of links to webpages from all across the Web. It also allows you to title and enter a description for each link that you share. It appears to work with any link to any webpage.||The interface feels slightly clunky and difficult. Whereas something like Storify allows users to create separate, self-contained stories about specific topics, Delicious only allows users to create a random, messy pile of random and possibly unrelated links, almost like bookmarking. This, in my opinion, makes this tool unusable.|
|10/1/2012 20:42:28||Spencer Woodstock||http://mlkshk.com/||http://mlkshk.com/user/spencerwoodstock||Maybe||You can upload pictures and have an explanation under it. It is very simple to use,You can somewhat create stories but just using pictures.||You can't create stories using tweets, you cant rearrange your pictures (that i know of) It seems like it is solely revolved around pictures and gif, not tweets videos etc.|
|10/1/2012 20:59:21||F.B.||Flockler||Flockler.com||Definitely not!||N/A||I was asked to request an email from Flockler. I received the initial thank you email, but have heard nothing further. This sight does not have a fast enough response time to merit our usage.|
|10/1/2012 22:06:26||Katie||http://storyful.com/||http://storyful.com/pro#tab=1||Probably not.||Content can easily be filtered and searched through by keyword, trending topic, etc. Tools generally all work smoothly and are intuitive.||You cannot really create anything through the use of this tool it seems. It's more of like searching through databases without being able to actually save anything. Maybe you can save searches in the pro version instead of the trial version...|
|10/1/2012 22:12:39||Katie||http://qrait.com/||http://qrait.com/||Probably not.||Looks really great... Very similar to storify. Creative and intuitive process, not just filtering of online content but actual curation!||It's development is currently on hold and the only way to create an account is through an invite... So ultimately useless to us now I think...|
