State-by-State Advocacy for Refugees
2
On Thursday, Sept 26, the Trump Administration issued an executive order declaring that states and localities will have the authority to veto refugee resettlement. They are intending it to be a state-by-state, city-by-city refugee ban, creating havoc in the refugee resettlement program. We need your help. Contact your Governor (or Mayors, other local elected officials) to make sure that they will welcome refugees.
3
Instructions:
4
1. Look at the chart below (and do your own research) to find out if your Governor has made a statement in support of refugees, following the Executive Order
5
2. Do the same for Mayors, County Executives, or whoever it makes sense to contact, given the structure of your local government.
6
3. Sign up to tell us that you can help with outreach.
7
4. Choose the right tactic, from the resource list below. We recommend starting by simply calling to ask if they will make a statement (or tweet) in support of welcome
8
5. If, as a result of your outreach, an elected official makes a statement or tweet, please email takeaction@hias.org to let us know.
9
10
Tactics:
11
1. Set up a meeting
12
2. Make phone calls
If you are not sure which tactic(s) are right for you, e-mail takeaction@hias.org.
13
3. Send Letters
14
4. Tweet to your elected officials
15
5. Stage a Creative Protest (we have a guide for you, reach out!)
