TIPS FOR THE PHONE CALLS: We've noticed that the calmer we stay, the more likely the unit is to listen and/or properly transfer our calls.
1. Greet the person on the phone, say, "Hi, how are you?"
2. You don't have to mention Alvaro right up front. Start by saying you're calling to check on a loved one. Express concern and worry for him and emphasize that you just want to make sure he has what he needs.
DON'T JUMP STRAIGHT INTO THE DEMANDS. Once you get to the line you need to be on, you can say that you've been concerned for him and are requesting [DEMANDS].
3. Thank them for their time.

They may say that you are not on the visitor list, and therefore you can't hear any updates about them. No matter what they tell you or who you get directed to: Still read the script AND STAY CALM. Tell them it doesn't matter, we won't stop calling until his conditions improve. BE PERSISTENT.
SCRIPT (Feel free to shorten or otherwise modify, however the most important demands we want to highlight are the ones in bold - his right to a doctor's appointment, B12 shots, and neuropathy medication):

"Hi, My name is ________, and I’m calling because I’m concerned about an elderly loved one at the Estelle Unit. His name is Alvaro Hernandez, TDCJ #00255735, he is 74 years old. I am calling to raise several concerns about Mr. Hernandez' treatment by staff at Estelle. Can you please record them and pass them on to the appropriate staff? Mr. Hernandez hasn't been able to use the bathroom for days at a time, so he is in urgent need of seeing a doctor. Due to the lockdown at Estelle unit he hasn't been able to go to his appointment. Another major issue is his vitamin B12 deficiency. UTMB Galveston doctors pinned all his neurological symptoms on vitamin B12 deficiency. He needs B12 to prevent his neurological symptoms from worsening, but right now staff are denying him B12 shots, which is medical neglect. Can you please let me know who is responsible for preventing him from getting his B12? Despite his mobility issues, Mr. Hernandez is not provided with an ADA shower with handrails. Given his mobility restrictions he should be provided with one for his safety. In addition, he is currently heavily sleep deprived due to the bright lights which stay on in his cell. This is clearly discriminatory treatment on the part of at least some Estelle staff, so I am requesting the lights be turned off during nighttime and that an investigation be opened into this immediately. Another issue with his cell is the lack of power outlets, which prevents him from using his radio and other personal property. He is also denied recreation time, regular physical therapy, and the diet prescribed to him by UTMB doctors. Can you please let me know who is responsible for denying him recreation time and the diet he receives? Finally, he should be prescribed medication for his neuropathy, otherwise he is at risk of needing amputation. All this is a clear case of medical neglect.
