Building a Campaign Tracking URL

For any marketing activity you undertake, you will want to monitor the performance and group together similar data. To do this you can add a tracking URL to the end of any links you share. There are 5 parameters available, but only 3 are REQUIRED. It is good practice to get into a system of naming everything clearly and consistently across teams and departments.

You do not need to create UTM's for Google Ads - Google Ads automatically generates them.NEVER use campaign tracking for internal links from one page to another of your site. Use event tracking or internal promotions instead.

1 - Enter the campaign information in row 20. (Ad Content and Keyword are optional)Use lowercase throughout and use hypens not underscores or spaces

2 - Check the built link in B22 to ensure it doesn't contain any spaces or special characters which might not renderUse generic (but descriptive) source and mediums to retain cardinality

3 - Test the built link in a browser and look in GA realtime reports for a session matching this information.Be consistent across teams and departments

4 - Record the details in the "Campaign Tracking Record" sheet Each parameter should be distinct and easily identifiable to other members of your team

Keeping a record of the tagged links gives you and your team a reference point for analysis
