“Canada is banning companies from importing or making plastic bags and styrofoam takeout containers by the end of this year.
•
It’s also banning their sale by the end of next year and their export by the end of 2025.
•
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau first promised in June 2019 that his government would phase out the production and use of hard-to-recycle plastic items as it aims for zero plastic waste by the end of the decade.
•
Initially, he said the ban would happen in 2021, but the scientific assessment of plastics needed to put the ban in motion was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
•
The government is also intending to impose standards requiring a minimum amount of recycled content in single-use items, in a bid to create a bigger market for plastic material from recycling plants.
•
Canada's domestic recycling industry is very small, and the demand for recycled plastics is quite limited.
•
The federal government listed plastics as toxic under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act last year, which paved the way for regulations to ban some of them.
•
However, a consortium of plastics producers is suing the government over the toxic designation, in a case expected to be heard later this year.

“Have you ever been flight shamed before? The reality is that I've made a fundamental assumption with my community on here that we have an active mindset to reduce and be mindful of our impacts, whether it's reducing plastic, meat, or choosing less intensive travel alternatives.
I believe that a lot of us in these spaces have SOME amount of time for long-distance trips through the car, train, or bus, but how much pressure do we place on ourselves when we know celebrities, politicians, and the elite are taking private jet planes without having a second thought in their minds about their environmental impact?
I'm not saying that we give up on our collective journey but rather viewing how people have the energy to critique individuals than the existing systems that make billions off of those flying.
I'm not afraid to share my impacts, but what gets me tired is how willing people place themselves in perfectionist mindsets within specific sectors of their life that they are best to reduce and want to shut down people. That isn't very pleasant.”

Do you have to keep every glass jar and bottle you come in contact with? I would say yes, but it’s a fine line between reusing and hoarding! If you find yourself with too many, offer them up to your local refill store or on your local @buynothingproject group or @facebookmarketplace to keep them in use and out of the waste stream.

ANYWAY! Here are a few methods to remove labels from glass containers:
Fill to just above the label with boiling water and wait a few minutes
Peel the label off and hope for the best!
Soak for a while in the hot water you just used.
Scrape off (a bread tie works great here).
Rub any remaining adhesive with a paste of baking soda and oil OR try eucalyptus or lemon essential oils.
Scrub, rinse, dry, and refill!

Why save everything for reuse if glass is highly recyclable? Well, “recyclable” doesn’t mean an item is actually recycled. Glass recycling is very energy intensive and may even be crushed into landfill cover in your area - look into it!

🌿 While it would be an ideal world where everyone bought ethical and sustainable fashion or secondhand styles, we're not there yet. ⁠

🛍️ With that in mind, if you're going to buy fast fashion, don't treat it like fast fashion. In other words, don't buy it only to throw it out next week or next month. This only contributes to the growing --and already enormous-- textile waste problem.⁠

Instead:⁠
- Buy fast fashion with intention, buy it to love it and look after it and give it the life it deserves. ⁠
- Find the quality pieces, repair them when necessary, wash them properly, and enjoy them by wearing them again and again and again. #outfitrepeater⁠

When we buy stuff, it tends to require more stuff. Take a cell phone for example. If you buy a new phone 📱, you'll probably get a new charger, possibly new headphones, and other accessories like cell phone case, and so on. Keep this in mind if you want to reduce your consumption! A blaze on the surface of the Gulf of Mexico resembling a large "eye of fire" has been brought under control, according to Mexico's state oil company Pemex. The company said the fire, blamed on a gas leak from an underwater pipeline, happened at 5:15 a.m. local time. No injuries or evacuations of the facility have been reported. In this 2nd of a 3 video series on how to use a safety razor and why you should make the switch, we're going to show you how to shave with a safety razor.

- Lather up (I use a bar of soap - @albatross_sailing has plastic free shaving cream!)
- Shave at a 35-40 degree angle

“I used to think about sustainability as a “hippie” thing. It seemed synonymous with a lot of stereotypes I couldn’t relate to and quite frankly, seemed like it needed to be an all or nothing thing I would surely fail at being a part of anyway — so why try?

Of course, that’s ridiculous.

Sustainability is not a “hippie thing”. It’s a survival thing.

Sustainability is critical to the health and well-being of everything on this planet and affects us all. This being said, unfortunately, it impacts many communities, countries, and environments disproportionately — which is why so many can blissfully ignore the impacts and urgency of climate change and other issues relating to sustainability and social and environmental justice.

Three of the biggest lessons I have learned in my journey so far are:

1. Environmental justice is social justice. We need to listen to the voices of Black people, Indigenous peoples, and People of Colour, who are often affected by issues of sustainability disproportionately.

2. Your voice (vote) matters. Yes, individual choices and lifestyle changes are important and when small changes are made collectively, they can have big impact. BUT, voting in governments and leaders who support climate action is VITAL to the fight for our planet, it’s well-being, and ultimately, our well-being. Vote with your dollar and vote with your voice for the kind of world you want to live in.

3. We will never be perfect. I am constantly learning, and changing my opinions and lifestyle as I receive new information and learn better. I have many of you guys to thank for this and I truly appreciate every DM or comment I get that opens the door for conversation, education, and positive change.

Remember not to look down on others who are in a different place in their sustainability journey. Rather, have an open heart, engage in conversation, and approach topics of sustainability with a growth mindset. We’re truly all in this together. It is all our problem. It is all our responsibility. It is all our future at stake.

There's a bit of a learning curve to making the switch if you've never used a safety razor before. That's what this video is here to help with!

In this 1st of 3 video series on how to use a safety razor and why you should make the switch, we're going to show you how to handle a safety razor.

Here goes:
- Get to know the razor, feel its weight
- Learn how to access where the safety razor blade goes; with this razor, you twist the bottom to open the wings of the blade holder
- Grab a fresh blade, holding the short edges (the long ones are sharp!) carefully place your new blade into the blade holder
- Twist the wings closed, and it's ready to shave!
- Be sure to store dull blades in a safe place (like a mason jar) for recycling - you can even send them back to @albatross_sailing via their take back program to be upcycled into new products!

♻️ Have you ever done this: examined an item that you're not sure whether or not it should go in the recycling bin, but instead of finding out if it can be recycled, you toss it in the blue bin and hope that it gets recycled?

🗑 Or perhaps you knew something wasn't likely to be recycled, but you hoped that it could be, so you tossed it in anyway?

🙈If so, you're not alone. This is wishcycling. We've all been there, done that.

♻️How can we avoid wishcycling? Simply, get educated on what can be placed in your recycling bin! Head to your local waste management's website, app, or call city hall, and find out more.

🥜The problem with tossing items into the blue bin that can't be recycled is that it can contaminate the waste stream (think about how a blob of peanut butter could soil perfectly recyclable paper).

🛒It’s been a while since we’ve posted a bulk grocery haul like this because low waste grocery shopping has been more challenging in the last year. 😷

You're washing your clothing too much.

One of the principles of sustainable living is consuming less. So naturally, if we take care of our things and try to make them last as long as possible, in turn, we buy less.

Washing clothing is probably the number 1 activity that causes our clothing to wear out. Hot water and strong detergents in combination with the friction of other clothing tumbling around greatly affects the lifetime of fabrics.

Washing less, will ensure that our items last a lot longer and allow us to get as much life out of them as possible.

You will see SO many conflicting numbers when you search for "how often do I wash....". It's hard to know exactly what is best when everyone has different biases and motives for telling you one thing or another.

Bottom line, it's honestly no ones business to know how many times you wash something. I mean really, who cares as long as you don't walk around smelling bad or that your risking your health.

Use your nose, if it smells clean, then it probably is. Wear it, don't wash it.

I use the same bathroom towel all week.

I wear my jeans probably 20 times before washing them.

I wear my dresses until they are dirty which means they probably get washed a couple of times per year.

I refuse to succumb to germaphobic narratives and just rely on my common sense and what works best for me. You may be different and that is perfectly fine. Just don't think you have to wash something after every single use.

Unless it's underwear. Please wash those.

🧼My all-time favourite, easy-to-make all-purpose cleaner is simple! Which is why I love it. All you need is a spray bottle, water, vinegar and (optional) essential oil.

➡️Here’s the breakdown:
1/3 Vinegar
2/3 Water
10-20 Drops of Essential Oil 🍋

🌱Mix in a spray bottle and you’re good to go! This all-purpose cleaner is safe for most surfaces, but it’s recommended that you avoid cleaning granite, marble and soapstone countertops, in addition to solid wood furniture.

🌿My favourite cleaning companion is my Swedish Sponge Cloth. Christen (founder of Ten and Co.) and I came up with a collaborative print which I love and it makes cleaning a bit more fun!

🍃These cloths are soft enough for any surface, but durable enough for stainless steel, cooktops and dishes. They are way more absorbent than a paper towel, sucking up about ¾ of a cup of liquid, making them perfect for spills too.

🌳The best part? They are compostable! @ten_and_co Sponge Cloths are made with plant cellulose and cotton and printed with water based dyes. When they reach the end of their useful life (6-12 months later), they will compost away leaving behind no harmful residues.
