GIVE ME ALL YOUR MUSIC IMMEDIATELYi am utterly vulnerable to you. macho and suave. heartbreak. cool sunglasses.this is the IDM/breakbeat I craveCrazy amount of energy and amazing technique! Potential contest winner. Perhaps a little too energetic... can't breathe. The intro makes me think of an intro to some super hard DDR track complete with MAX 300-like step chart hahaha. This is not lunar but since I can't think of who the author is, they certainly share music taste! It's like. Fzero GX and Metroid Prime had a baby.. Loving this man. Drums are really nice fit here. Very good harmonics in this. Solid leads as well. Man this is just so juicy. 2 Mins in and yeah, we are now on the final lap. Great change up here.Adore the tonal changes in the melody here, and how much space there is in the arrangement despite the (beautifully) intense drums. Love this sort of spacey sound, where intensity and floatiness are combined. And how it evolves into those raver piano bits. So many changes and beautiful harmonies.Congratulations on receiving my highest mark. This narrowly snatched 1st place for me. This is monstrous! I want to play it very very loud, and erm, have done, in my car no less. With my song I really tried to push for greater loudness and I think I succeeded but it still stops short of being THIS, which is definitely more what I'm aiming for these days with sound. Also I'm just a big softy for rudeboy dnb and jungle, even with all its flowery leads and chords which only make it even more my thing. But no this is seriously amazing.Good Fusion-Techno music. I like how the pitch bends are used against all the different synth chords in the song. If I had to give suggestions for improvement though, I noticed that at 1:22, you were introducing a new instrument only to be drowned out but the fast-paced drums and the background effects. Also, making the bass a little bit louder helps as well. This was actually the first song I heard as I jumped into the listening party and I was like "well shit if this is the standard for the whole competition I'm fucked and I'm loving it". Starts off with all the right energy, love the fucking pitch bends of this synth...I have somewhat of an idea of how it's layered and put together but it's top notch and I wish I did something like that. 0:18 love the quality of that synth lead, the drum and bass is on point. 0:39 fuck yes, just fuck yes, the bass is perfect and the rhythm of the synths here catchy as hell. Beats crisp as you'd like. 1:22 amazing switch up, 1:28 goes up and just so good. 1:44 amazing break down and right back into 1:53, haha yes this rhythm is the best. Wish I had the right words to say to describe some of what's going on. 2:44 this section again, a bit different and still amazing. Just what a dope fucking track man, 0:39 was what sealed the deal for me, this had to be a high scorer.this track is SO up my alley that it's legit gotten me to start describing this category of "yasuhisa watanabe shmup music and stuff" as "coldfusion" so you've coined a new term that I'll probably regularly be using for the rest of my life with this track thank you. It's so CHILL (cold) and all transposy chord sample layers annd I LOVE YASUHISA WATANBEI GSNHLDIFKGNHOIERT sample and I love that fake ""Brightness"" patch and these subtle pitch bends on every single thing aaaaahh. This is overwhelmingly beautifulI CANT LISTEN TO THIS ONE WITHOUT EXPLODING EVERY TIME I LISTEN TO IT I EXPLODE {{{{{{Part 18: COLDFUSION CITY. this is a place "They don't want you to know about", a multiversal spaceport in the ARCTIC. most of it resting on tall metallic pillars and platforms high above the broken ice of the arctic ocean. You see ships take off and flying cars woosh past you at speeds too fast to comprehend. You'd think you're looking at a timelapse if you weren't physically standing there ALSO There is a constant intense Aurora in the sky somehow}Another absolute miraculous creation here. I am very very excited to find out who wrote this. Similar to bomb boy, the sound design here is like, literally any other sounds and this wouldn't be as good, the perfect balance and incorporations of the tools available. So much attention to fine little details. The way the atmosphere just builds and builds through the form, to the sections where the drums drop out and that harmony keeps swellwing ever upwards. Each section perfectly complimenting the one before. This comes super close to tying with a couple other entrie for possibly my favorite of the entire competition.OOOOOoooooh this is definitely cold! Refrigerated! It has that weird property I can't quantify where it all feels super cold and artificial. No, I'm not just saying that because it has cold in the name. Masafumi Takada captures this vibe a lot, too. It's one of the reasons the first Danganronpa OST was so good, it captured that "deep indoors" vibe.

SDLFHGSKDFGHSKJDGH THIS IS GETTING REALLY GOOD!!!! It sounds so adventurous and exciting. This is like, the peak of what I look for when I want cool videogame music that gets me into the motions!! ^^ It's so full of sound, across the spectrum, too. I have nothing to say on this. Except that it makes me want to make a kart level for my game to match this sort of mood. I'm mostly just sitting here in silence soaking this glory in. <3 2:42, more goodness...

Feel proud as heck over this, will ya, okay? Because you deserve it for this masterpiece.

hi SHNABUBULApharmaceutical apocalypse. deep cover. death by hangingproggy afNice to see Frank Zappa entered the contest. This song is like being rhythmically slapped in the face by 50 jazz virtuoso clowns with mr mime hands. I mean .. this is the highest praiseOne of the top entries in this SPC. Chaotic yet orderly, quirky, and fun. Usually long songs get really repetitive or lose focus, but you really kept my attention and a theme going the whole time.(Hi markweiss/sambubula) this tune makes me think "what if oddmeter music were a staple of the soundtrack to Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga?" love the use of that annoying laugh as a kecak rhythm lineSounds like Egad has provided tech to Dr Wily. very nice jazzy feel to this. Lead is really wild and I love it. The change at 3 mins is pure genius. Feels like Sonic the Hedgehog got lost in Egads now laboratory. Jimmy Carter use
at 5 mins is a nice touch. Man it got super dark at 6 mins... Nice outro.
Stunning. The bit starting at 3:30 is magic.Sounds like it's gradually falling apart at the end.Aha the token Shnabubula entry! Couldn't be anybody else. Sort of goes without saying at this stage of life but I love it and think it's amazing... so much song craft on show here. And what a title...Good use of chords and drum beats although random style is usually not under my preferences. I like how you manage to get everything in beat and in key including all the random riffs that occur throughout the music. It is hard to note improvements, but maybe you can try to trim down on repetition of the music and bring down the total length of the track. My #1 and holy shit what a ride for nearly 7 minutes. Some really cool use of the samples off the bat, we're only getting started but all around me is all different samples just having a damn conversation. 0:31 a new rhythm and really slick lead, 0:45 nice deep bass coming in. 1:00 I feel the rhythm pushing in more and I'm ready to get soaked. 1:10 prepping us with that off beat synth usage and WHAM 1:18 holy shit yeah that's nice, and that gorgeous snyth melody over the top, so bright and warm. Composition here on is majestic. 2:25 sounds like another friggin' conversation haha. I find it so damn hard talking about this kind of song! Just wanna sit and let the thing wash over me. 3:20 oh shit it's Jimmy and he's ready for his performance. 3:30 ahh yes yes that offbeat snyth stuff again, just incredible. 4:12 this vartiation of the prevous section is so good, all the little musical touches around here are gorgeous. 4:45 effortlessly push into a more chaotic and damn righteous section, the flow of the song is impeccable. 5:15 heck yeah, the groove here is amazing. AHH EVERYTIME, 5:26 that simulated tempo automation is stunning, what a trick. 6:00 full on ending mode and ready to impress, intensity here is off the chain. The ending has a really nice explosive effect as well, like give us some time to appreciate what we just went through. Man yeah I wish I was able to pick out and talk more about certain details without sounding like an idiot but damn, amazing song!this has ALL of the things I am looking for in musician music created by a musician inside of a lot of nickles. so much of this is so EMOTIONAL to me. I LOVE THE virgil donati parts. I could point out ev ery PORTION of the trac k that makes me explode but iitS EXPLODE you can't AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I want my drums to go like that in my ears. so many tight x/16 THINGS ahhhhhh tuplet [space notes evenly] 99999friend {{{{{{Part 15: What was once a rich and vibrant cultural center has been turned into a devious mechanical prison. EVERYTHING here is constantly moving and it's a wonder anyone even manages to have a clue how to navigate it. you're here to save your allies, they have knowledge you'll need to take back the world you're trying to save!!!!!!!!!}hhahaha okay so, this was the third and final entry I made, and the only one that I put real effort into. Because I'd already written two songs that I felt did more to highlight the actual samples, in this one, I mostly just wanted to mess around and blow off compositional steam. I realize this is somewhat contrary to the nature of this contest, and I apologize for that. For what it's worth, I still had a blast using the sounds here and they certainly shaped a lot of my compositional choices. One thing I did with this is, I didn't actually tune any of the samples, so when I loaded them into my sampler, they're all in different keys and tunings, if you were to export a midi file of this song, exactly as it is in the sequencer, it would be a polytonal cacophonic mess, I may have to try that to see what it would actually sound like even. I also want to note I'm quite proud of the final groove in this song, in the last minute or so, the one that most prominently features the Jimmy Carr Laugh. Not sure how people feel about that section, but I hope you all enjoyed it, think I'd very much like to try some version of that bit live with a drummer and bass player maybe. Also this song is based on The MTG card that was banned from modern, Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis.Well, this has my attention instantly. I love the modulation on that lead!!! I can already tell I'll be coming back to this one, if it develops well. I want to see it fill out that musical spectrum and get a more driving beat!! I'm playing this in foobar and have the waveform seekbar, and it looks like good things await me! :D
Ah, here's that bass! Yessss. The spectrum is filling out! SFLGHSDJHGJKSAHKJFDHGKJDSHF THAT BEAT! A little bit of Bonetrousle vibes, but that's a vague comparison. It's got some intense vibes, like a battle of some sorts, too playful to be really serious, but maybe a king dice sort of villain, a casino master or a card wielding adversary. I am soaking this in and loving it. <3 Wow, and I'm not even half through. Huhhhh, this sounds like something Shnababula might make. Granted, the only Shnababula I listen to regularly is Game Genie, but I think I sense some of those vibes. The chaotic, yet strong melodies and moods. Ooh, 3:30 and the stakes are raised! It's an all or nothing now bet/battle!
By the time it got to about 5:00, I'm lost though. I wasn't wrong though! I'll definitely be coming back to this one a lot!
I'm not sure how to describe what i hear but ...
it matches shnabubula's style.
it's a fun ride from start to finish, both compositionally AND in sample usage.
super high energy as well

The sort of squarey lead throughout this reminds me of the Sega Game Gear (Sonic 2 is mainly what I played on that system, so maybe something from that?), I think. Eh. Maybe not. Maybe I'm thinking F-Zero. Whatever it's reminding me of, I like the sound. Also good structure, lots of good grooves, generally all around enjoyable to listen to.

hi B1ITZdeeply beautiful and important. liquid. best practice edit momentummore progressive IDM-y breakbeat goodness, I wish I had made this one tbh! This is a masterclass in how to write an SPC song. Chord planing heaven. When I die please plane me with a chordI see the "if you have time to post, you have time to write notes" talk had worked. I'm glad you submitted and didn't just stand on the sidelines, wouldn't be an SPC without you. That labyrinth sample was really compatible with your style. Classic Lunar. Smoke weed every day 420.(i c u dav haris :V - if not, it is a 100% accurate emulation) from the drug-inducement to the song title, vocal/rhythmic phrasing of the bassline, arps, chord choices, and a dash of YOU WA SHOCK... Definitely an art statement being made here. It's perfect! Angry cat approves.Lots of fast notes. Great percussion and bass. Crazy stutter stuff at 1:30 is a good touch. Can I supersize this is a nice addition. Made me laugh. Funny vocals 3 mins in. And the cat. Can't break me. No.. never. This song is perfect on all levels. The individual melodic / percussive parts, the transitions between them, the flow of the song and how it evolves, the use of the samples. This is just heaven.Nice tempo fakeout at the opening: I thought the song was going to go in a slower direction. No further comment. This is author making authorcore in the last few days before the deadline after making no progress for weeks :p it's my first full-length song made with Reaper, and was a huge learning experience for me. Despite all my doubts about being able to get a good sound out of Reaper I made some big strides. Then obviously I got bored about half way through and weeded/jimmy carr'd it to death.Overall, I feel that this piece is way too chaotic to listen to. I appreciate the attempt at trying to create a fast-paced track and the wide variety use of sound effects and vocals, but the fast-pacing makes it a little difficult to hear with all those rapid panning and volume fluctuations. I also find this piece to be somewhat repetitive. Good variety of vocals though. My second place score. 420 smoke that weed bitch, smoke it! A wonderful start to the song, immediately great use of samples. 0:23 love these subtle breakbeats. And mmmm 0:41 what's for dinner, it's delicious bass, god damn this is cohesive as you'd like, what a fucking tone. There's some amazing fills all over the shop, the run down of the goeman pops is amazing. Gating at 1:30 is top notch. HES FINALLY BACK. Oh man this beat loop, is that vocoded? Sounds sick. 2:30 the synth coming in on the 3rd beat sounds so great. 2:44 I knew was gonna be something pecial, and just lay it on me at 2:53 haha. I love this little pauses, something that's grown on me. 3:05 fucking hilarious vocal, I imagine you were composing and went to try something there and did that for fun and was like...fuck it that's hilarious I'm keeping that. 3:10 ah shit this totally reminds of that ronald mcdonald mix of that U.N. Owen was her song. I love just how fucking adament this section is. If I had to gripe it's that it felt like the song starts to stretch at after that section to hit that 4:20 mark haha. But I was thoroughly into this song for the whole time. But geez man that bass 0:41 is something else, so cool.I LOVE sample pack contest 8 (blitzlunar). When I submitted the labyrinth of time sample I did NOT consider its potential to use as a arpeggiated chord feeling thing like this. it works wonderfully !!!!!! The world as it is has become more dystopian than it looks on the bright surface, and you've made it your goal to use your deep knowledge of ANCIENT HISTORY (~1980-2020) to save the world from its current tyranny. Welcome to the Future, don't forget the past. Everything in this city is METALLIC and GLASS and especially IRIDESCENT}Mattis commented in the listening party that this song is basically a master class in how to write an SPC entry. I couldn't agree more. I think a big part of the reason for that is, I do believe the person responsible for this entry has entered more SPCs than possibly anyone else, and all that experience shows. There is the ABSOLUTELY flawless alchemy level precision blend between, comical use of vocal and other samples at great gotcha moments to remind us of the underlying fun, the mindblowing textural unexpected and gorgeous use of samples in new and innovative ways, and then the compositional blending of the two polls into one super cohesive and completlely captivating piece of audio magic. The final section, despite being arguably less "Music" where we start building on a static texture after the first suspended scream vocal. I feel like I'm going though a tunnel of mind expanding universal knowledge, the matrix gradually starting to make sense to my brain as I ascend to nirvana. That abolultely unparalleled psychadelic experience I get from that section, not only further confirms it's author for me, but might alost just make it my personal favorite entry from the contest, though it's more likely that's it's a dead even tie between this and select few group of others. This feels like a treat, now... the dream gashapon vibes are calling this out as a Lunar entry to me. These sorts of songs give me abstract images in the mind. Blues, purples, bubbles, sparkles, minty greens, and crystals of ice. 2:05 has me pretty convinced this is Lunar for sure, now. Unless someone else imitates that style so well. Yeah, I'm really happy I got to submit the gex sample. :p I feel like the song has an overreliance on the pulses from the intro, being too afraid to venture too far from them, when they don't suffice well enough on their own for an entire song. But then again, that's how I usually end up composing, too. What is a melody, when I can just fill it with interesting rhythms and changeups??? It's such a technically impressive song though. That part earns a lot of praise, but it really seems obvious that you ran out of ideas on where to take this song.this is like... you can take a chill vibe and then transpose it on top of some dnb to create intense vibes.
there's some weird stuff towards the end of this tune but it's mostly very high quality.

It's beautiful, and well mixed, and the changes of tone in the melodies are making my heart feel lots of things.Nice violin replication! This is extremely wonderful and just lovely, makes for very easy listening, and amongst my faves this time around. Also pretty AUTHOR, has a very classy and polished presentation/feel about it to me, in terms of the composition/arrangement side of things specifically (though that viola sound is mindbending! Amazing to think that came out of the sample pack.) JRPG magic!Overall, this piece sounds decent. The melody is great and I like the chords used in the music. As for improvements, the introduction kind of threw me off with all those dissonant crystal leads. The interesting parts of the song don't really start to kick in until later in the music at 1:51. I can understand that you want a slow beginning that gradually transitions to something more exciting near the end.Incredible, violin blew my friggin' mind at the listening party. Literally leaning in "no way, no way! I hate you I wish I thought of this". Composition here is effortless, everyone at 0:37 was saying like "Anime intro!" or something haha. Absolutely could imagine it. This is one of those songs where I need to listen twice just to let myself appreciate more of the components here. 1:22 is amazing, the violin over the bass with that 4 note phrase in the background, 1:27 and 1:35 that almose sine wave fill...damn so many good touches in this song. Like 2:04 in the background that voice sample fades in with reverb, that Toooh thing? Forget which sample it is, but one of the many wonderful touches throughout the song. I could pick out so many little things. If I had to be a picky little bitch it would be I wish it had a slightly longer end, the end is handled perfectly but it's a preference thing. Yeah just a great song for this competition.very much addicted to this JRPG (toby fox) song. some tiny bits with chord changes that are the kind that irritate me, but the parts that aren't that are WONDERFU"L(video game) and the sounds that exist in this are insane. epic''''''''''']]]]ethnic {{{{{{Part 37: (Epilogue, End Credits) well you managed to save yourself and defeat the mechanical beast, but it seems it was completely impossible to deactivate the doomsday laser...though it doesn't do what you were expecting. Such a masterful composition, and the choice use of sounds only heightens this even further. I'm sure this song will receive a ton of comments on the solo string-ish lead instrument, but jeeeze that is one of the most unique but also effective repuposing of a sample, I just marvel at it every time. Lets not forget the gorgeous melody and progression at the heart of this song. Truly a remarkable piece of workThis VIOLIN?? Where did you get that from???? Ugh, with everyone talking about this, I felt like I would be able to grasp this one for sure, but I have no clue who might have made this after all. Such a GOOD piece, though! All I can assume is that this wasn't made by any of the people groaning about how medriocre their pieces they got in were. Because I don't think anyone could make this and not respect their own work. I hear a few notes in here that are almost perfectly lined up with Makna Forest in Xenoblade. This is such a clean song. The audio quality is GREAT.is this a reference to something?

Beautiful. No comment. No supersized puns from me, either, here. This is very chill. Creative use of sounds and the general atmosphere is great, definitely one of the higher placing songs for me this time. If only it was a tad longer and more developed (dat sudden ending...)This piece really stands out from all the other submissions. I like how the background ambient sounds emphasize this setting of a burger bar filled with neon lighting and 50's automobile at 3 AM. The background chords are excellent and the use of reverb and correct wording of vocals helps amplify the feeling of the music. One thing that keeps me from giving this a perfect score is I would like to hear more bass drum beats in the music.Holy balls this is loud but style of this song is so great. Was this the song that people were saying was PSO menu like?...I hope it was? I get that vibe a bit. I wanna super size this man. 1:05 this part is really nice, the vocals are used so well. Okay, this was the first entry, on the night of the listening party, that just completely knocked me off of my feet. I'm happy to say on repeated listens, my feelings on this have only grown. The textures are just so utterly gorgeous, as though this person personally selected each of the sounds as the most ideal to convey this exact musical creation. From the hueyhueyhuey sample to even the silly supersize sample.... the way the "everyday" from smoke weed synnergizes with the placement of one of the hueyhueyhuey in one part... there are so many technical marvels at work here, not to mention that one sweeping synth organ like effect. It's just completely glorious, and even if the sound design was mindblowing, the composition is just really beautiful. Again... as with any of the short entries I love, I do wish it would be longer, but thats' just from a selfish desire to have more music to drink up.Ahahahaha!! It was me! I wonder who might have guessed? You're probably wondering, why did I name it after Bomb Boy? I don't even know LOL... it's just funny to me to throw a random someone's name in a weird song title, pffft

This is a weird song for me. I didn't have anything in mind when I made it, and that's very non-standard for me. I originally just made the ps3bell arp when playing around, and the drums matched so well, so I went from there. I only barely got it finished by the deadline, but I was surprisingly able to create a melody with it that I was 100% happy with. That surprised me a lot!

I was also surprised at the positive reactions this song got. It was mostly a lot of copypasting, and a few chords that I was forced into as a result of the Gust sample being only so versatile (and it makes up the backing chords for the entire track, in addition to being used as a spacer of sorts in some parts. (I really don't know my music terminology, I apologize.)

I didn't feel like it had much going for it other than a nice cool set of backing chords, which is why I added the organ lead. I felt like that sort of thing would have a good vgmusic appeal LOL! It does a good job of making the track a lot more memorable than it otherwise might be.

This is also the first SPC song I've ever used the vocal samples in! I noticed I could string the samples together to get some sort of cheesy commercial-like feel, so I tapped into the ley lines of consumerism and fast food to help put some humor into it. I think it worked well, judging by the reactions on the listen-through. ^^
woah! sound!!!!

the use of guitar as a bass: brilliant. wish i had thought of it.
the vocal samples are a downside tho. almost juke-like which kinda doesnt mesh with the LUSH CHILL vibe
also this ends way too quickly. not really a detriment but a complaint nonetheless :P

hi DUSTHILLGUYthe band is back together. I've been crucified. I'm in love. crucial.the "chorus" is really lovely, it really feels like a payoffThis song has such a positive forwards-looking vibe. No punnnGreat melody line, it somehow gets better with each listen. This is like SPC 8's theme song, moving from the past SPCs to new SPCs (brings a tear to my eye)! Reminds me of dusthillguy which is 8mbgmgs now?not sure if surprise stalenhag or dusthillguy. That perc and bassline works really well, and the laugh vocals makes it complete! So far sounds like something from Sonic in the old Genesis days. Love that bassline. Interesting use of Jimmy Carter. Nice flute as well. 1:30 in and now the zone has gotten to a weed portion. Overall great stuff. This one makes me emotional, I love these kinds of melodies. Then the Donkey Kong Country 2 style "ooh aah" samples at 0:50 are funny and lovely. The subtle upward chord sequence at 1:40. Full of changes and details, of humour and melancholy.Oh maaaan, we've got some really fun tracker music here. I am into the Phil Collins zone. The parts after 1:30 are my favourite, especially that little harmonic touch at 1:40 which might go unnoticed. It may not make as large strides with sound as some of the other entries but makes up for it in song quality/arrangement imho.Comments This music sounds decent. I like the usage of the digitized bells for the melody. The vocals being used as part of the melody also works though it feels annoying when used too much. I also feel that the drums are a bit too heavy for this music and could undergo some reduction in number of drum beats or the overall volume. Is this the same person that did JimmyCarrTonight? Feel like there's some similar vibes here. I feel like I'm at the end of my high school 80s movie or something, the bad guys whoever they are, they're done, and my pretty babe is giving me the ok to come over and give her an end of movie kiss. The Jimmy Carr kids are looking and laughing, and I'm like "guys please, this is grown up stuff" and pull the blinds down as the silhouette kiss happens. 1:20 good sample shit here, that bendy synth is so good. 1:45 I have no idea what this is but people in the listening party were all about it haha. But it's great! I love this shit haha. Nice ending too.this starts sounding nothing like dusthillguy and then turns into the most dusthillguy thing in the world. It feels like you are in the PAST and then you go into the bright FUTURE. I love the sample choices in the "past" part and how they are used. such a distinct type of over the top emotional FLOAT IN The air this music creates {{{{{{Part 20: this shrine at the end of the arctic ruins dungeon is uhhh dedicated to HUMOR. I'm still just utterly blown away by this track. Several during the listening party had suggested it was by dusthillguy. I'm not overly familiar with patrick's music, I do know he has a wonderfully delightful personality as a human being though, and that would certainly explain why this song puts such a massive smile on my face if this is in fact by him, however if that is true, it also means he's grown quite a bit since the last time I heard his material. That was nearly a decade ago, so obviously that is more than possible. Whether or not its his though, I am just tremendously impressed. The choice to use Jimmy carr and "oh mann' melodically, almost in a YTPMV aesthetic... I would have assumed this would be grating and obnoxious, but it's just the opposite, it conveys such a deep sense of joy and triumph, the way this lines up with the style of composition, constantly modulating and ascending major triads in these overly cheerful, off beat syncopated melodies... it's like... it just works, the cheese doubles back around again to become fully profound, and all of a sudden I believe I can defeat the evil forces and unite with my friends to create a new utopia on earth!GUST!!! And a sick beat! You've started me off right with a super positive feeling. It gives me talespin vibes. WOW! It just gets better and better! And you're throwing out new samples faster than I can really think about them! It has a really nice sunset drive sort of feeling. Happy days and good fun! I'm happy how you used the shakuhachi as a lead. That's the first I've heard of it in this contest. What a beautiful instrument! The little trills with it are so cute! WELL. Hello DustHillGuy. I'll eat my hat if that's not you with that Gims, LOL! Oh my god, and now it devolves into more and more silliness. This is what I love about your music, it's just *fun* music, and that's so rare to find. I'm almost expecting the monsquaz theme to drop in at any point. That might be a new favorite of mine in this contest. :dthis feels like a dusthillguy collab. really not sure though.
I wish i had thought to use jimmycarlaughing.wav like that.

Nice. I like the use of the carr laugh sample as a melodic and harmonic instrument. Playing "crudebusterclip_" and "smokeweed" side by side at 1:29 points out pitch pattern similarities I hadn't noticed before. Solid.

Love the jazziness in this. This is like DKC and a slight Sonic vibe. Bass line is nice. Love the wattery echoing sounds. Nice panning on those. Wonderful DJ scratch at around 1:35 or so.So good. So many musical ideas packed into this. The transition from smooth to eerie.Today's fine print: not SNES music. Although IF you provide an actual .spc file that plays actual SNES music with this on it later on, I will be genuinely surprised.I wasn't sure which of the two OBVIOUS KULORS I preferred but I ended up voting this one a bit higher, maybe as the sound world was that bit more expressive and interesting. I LOVE cute twinkly drippy arps that showcase SPC700 echo :) and those whining dischords that occur in the second half of the song.Welcome to the world of Cocoro@Function, a world where everyone relies on tablets to live? The intro part with the alternating square lead and pause at 0:25 and 1:59 sounds amazing. The rapid drum beats and the little side riffs that play are also a plus. As for improvements, I feel that section at 1:18 could sound more musical. The bass line seems to be playing in a different scale than the chords.Love the samples at the start, the d'n'b comes in and this is slick stuff. 0:25 ah yeah, so smooth, long pitch bends with a buttery bass underneath. All the elements come together to this moment and feel fly as fudge. 0:57 the little poppy stuff in the background is so nice. Some nice little touches, gating and fast notes. 1:18 oh yeah that acid bass is clutch as hell, 1:41 the synth pad stuff is fucking cool, 1:47 and the synth pad bends in awesome way for a moment, so dope. Extra amazing: It's often clear which sample is used but the song makes it sound like the samples were made for itI love the energy and intensity! That bassline is pretty catchy too. Great use of filter and effects, and easily one of the best production value songs in this SPC.mmmm love the techno vibes from this track. Great use of the THX supersaw. (guess this is kungfufurby)Very solid intro. Oh god, I LOVE that racecar type sound.. So fun. Love how this song builds up, man. Would fit perfect in Fzero GX, and then leave it in the dust, because this is better than GX and that is hard to top. Very good
use of Smoke weed samples at 1:20 ish. Such solid production work in this song. Love the vocals in this.
This evolves so steadily into awe-inspiring perfection. The use of the vocal samples gives me religious feelings.Feels like a strange horror track...For the most part, I am imagining Keanu Reeves or Wesley Snipes spinning and doing flying kicks and shooting at people. I think this may be the most well-produced of all the entries, the sound is really good.Even though this type of music isn't really my taste, I like the backing of the track with the bass and drums. The constant panning also works out very flawlessly here. However, it would be better if you reduce amount of high-pitched leads since they become hard to listen to without the bass and drum backing. This is noticeable at 2:48.I love the feel of the stuff transposing around 1:25 it is VERY intense. The level of sound scultping, both interms of subtle processing/eqing of all the samples to make things fit together in an utterly perfect sonic jigsaw, and the way each layer adds some element to the song that becomes absolulely essential. We're not just using every part of the buffallo here, but every bite is treated like a fine delicacy. The vocal samples especially just utterly come to life, from the "Tom Tom" chants, to the various vocal clips that give the impression of being hand picked from a library specifically for this track. A few other of the entires have managed to pull that off as well, and it's one of my favorite magic tricks so to speak. I absolutely love the chorus that builds around the melodic figure constructed from the huehuehue vocals, Jimmy's laughter synnergizing with them so perfectly, without need for full on melodyne-ing still seeming as though he's laughing directly in harmony with the lead focus. I also just want to say how beautiful the atmopshere is built before and after each section, giving things room to breathe and lending each new musical turn a glorious significance.I really like this intro. I immediately picture the darkness beneath an overpass in the dead of night. Light from semi trucks passing over in the night briefly casts a glow down, lighting up the area briefly before it returns to darkness. GOSH!!!! This is some DYNAMICS! It speeds up, and gets scarier, more intense, and louder. The bass gets complicated. Is this some sort of gang confrontation? Are situations getting more tense? Is there going to be a battle? Is violence the only way out of this one? Okay, what the heck! Why do I hear sans in the background at 1:30???? It reminds me how much of a shame it is that no one submitted the megalovania guitar. This is one of my FAVORITES. It gets more and more intense. I'm gonna show my friends this one. I want to stop listening and rave about it already, pfft. The screech lead panning is SO GOODDDDDDDDDDDD. I'd love to know what was going through your head as you wrote this, 'cause mine are so vivid. This is some beat-em-up level stuff. It feels like it could fit in something like hotline miami, too. Easily a top vote in this contest for me. EASILY. Goodness gracious! You should be proud of yourself. I have nary a guess who made this, either. It has some intense Kris Troutman vibes in the driving bass beat of it, and the theme, but I can't sense any of his typical cadences in here.BIG! SOUND!

Is it the pizza or maybe it's just the abundance of good ideas? The short cuts work really well with the bass, great feel. Really chillax and fun to listen to.yoshi's isla-- oh! great swing groove. Like the wavesequenced-like sound between each chord change. Definitely one of the more creative examples of sample manipulation here! (is this maxo?) it's just so short!Nice Yoshi's Island drums intro. Feels like Yoshi fell into a Sonic game while on acid. Really loving the stabby notes in this. Great touch. Solid production overall. Also love the variety. Avoid the pizza famine by filling your pizza with weed. Drums and bass are so punchy and fun. What a use of the samples! I can't believe it. The arrangement and manipulation of the sounds, the composition. Inspiring.Your sound design does not imply a pizza famine. That's a good thing.I met this girl on monday, took her for a drink on tuesday, etc etc...! Very late 90s sound to this... Chemical Brothers, Bassment Jaxx, Groove Armada and the like. I enjoy the "clicks'n'cuts" approach to rhythm.I like the Yoshi's Island intro used at the beginning of the music as well the techno music that follows afterwards. The chords are excellent along with the drum beats. I also like how you went to telephone quality audio around 1:41. If I had to list an improvement, I would like it more fluids with less abrupt drum beat endings. Finally, I wonder how the title "Pizza Famine" title fits with this music.Yoshi's island start! Right off the bat the groove is tight, this really thin organy notes are so good. 0:20 man this reminds me of shit I would've loved to have done years ago, the sequence of the samples coming in and out with the beat is infectious, it could go on for minutes and I'd be down but this is a competition damnit! 0:46 that synth in the back going high to low, so good. New section at 0:50 and the bass is just taking me for a walk, a walk down sexy town but there's a damn pizza famine going on, we're about to open up this bakery and start rolling us damn bread for pizza parties. 1:45 the oven is comin on, and 1:55 guys watch me make a frickin' pizza with ALL the topping. Got a THX topping for ya, wham! No one's going hungry on my watch. And now 2:20 I'm struttin' because my pizza is so fine that I am sublime. The use of samples as textures unto themsevles is really neat. Each one is featured in turn and the trading off between them creates a cool evolving sonic tapestry that also just grooves really nicely. The jarringness of sudden appearance and dissapearnce of nolve samples, is turned into a strength in this context. A lot of really fun playing around with the rhythmic empahsis that evolves out of using the samples this way too. I do wish things might have evolved a bit more and built on this idea, would be really exciting to hear these really fluid textures grow even further, but what's here is more than enough to make for a super solid trackA name has a lot of power to guide the listener in a song. It's really important, although I feel like some people might feel like it's ingenuine to suggest a theme to your listener before letting them get there own, first. And maybe so, but music is really only so powerful. It can only communicate vague emotions, so sometimes a little shove is needed to send someone down the right street. It's why music pairs so PERFECTLY with all other media. That's all to say, that when I closed my eyes, I pictured that tasty longing you get when you walk into a nice Brooklyn style pizza shop and see all the different types you might get to eat in a little bit. I can almost smell it! A pizza famine is something I would never want to experience!!! That reverse labyrinth was a great transition at 0:58. Amazing stuff!adventurous switching genres mid-song. Very nice production overall, pretty and phat. (nice touch with the bending shakuhachi)Very nice washy overall kinda feel. Very nice leads in this. Ok, the introduction to the fight sample was solid. Very nice music and loving the bass and drums and how they blend with everything else.Incredible melodies and chords all the way through. The mix of film music-like ambient stuff going on, with the heavy drums, I love it. The production.Sounds exactly as described by the title. I'm spinning, I'm floating, I'm wrapped in a big blanket... something like that. And then... FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! The retriggering shaku cracked me up to be honest. While this type of music isn't really my taste, the piece overall sounds decent and unique. I like the use of the crystal leads and the "Fight" vocal lead. However, I feel that the music abruptly gets louder right at 1:30. You should try to be gradual with the volume rather than giving someone a surprise that will cause them to reach for the volume knob.Love the sample use from the beginning, that simulated wave panning left to right, very chill. Plucky synth with the pad is really nice too. Then holy shit the SNES harps, I remember liking that alot at the listening party. That ahhhh use is incredible, the bends are amazing. Then oh shit! Fight! We're in asia now. I fucking love the shakuhachi use at 1:03, I'm jealous I never thought of it, I wanna do something like that in a future song! 1:30 is a nice change up, but unfortunately comes to a close, this is one I would've loved to hear some more of.some cool sound picks in the mix, cool "vibes" choices of the chords to make the ones you put in your ears like your grandma named "fractal, goldman sachs" yes I'm talking to you binary brush tonsil lady. In contrast to the 2 entries that were specifically designed to flourish under the constraints of severely limited audio hardware, this entry very explicity spells out the ways in which, despit being beautiful and with a unqiue one of a kind aesthetic of their own, there are some ways in which, having unrestricted access to full quality audio, can do things that you just can't get anywhere else. The effects on the shakuhachi and just so many other little sonic choices, the processing on the scream vocals, I could go on forever, but it's just a auditory masterpiece.Oh boy, viscous liquids! This one has a very laid back, slow feeling. I like the focus on the lower end of the spectrum, and the use of slowed samples. It's very original! I suppose you named it what you named it because of the slow, deliberating pace of it all? Wow, the beat coming in at 0:50 is a great development, and quite pleasant on the ears. This would be good to listen to in the car! Turn up that bass and annoy everyone! Gosh, you're rocking it with all the blurry, wet samples you're using. The melancholy nature of it feels to me like a sleepy haze, napping in a busy place. I used to take naps at my busy work when there was downtime at my work. It was a busy, unfun, unhealthy time of my life, but darn if those chilly, spur of the moment naps didn't feel great! Even if you wake up and your hand fell asleep under the weight of you tired head. The sounds of this song remind me of the voices and they way they'd blend together on the edge of unconsciousness. This is a 100 from me, because the mixing is so spot on, the mood is real, and there's not even a weak spot anywhere in the cadences, as far as I feel. I could come back and listen to this one a lot, and I definitely will be doing exactly that. It's much more downtempo than any of the other songs I've rated so high, but that doesn't make it any less deserving! It's easy to sleep on songs like this. (no pun intended.)hello this is mine. I think it's the first song I completed.

The bass with the long sustain. This funky rhythm. The melody!! If this isn't kulor, then holy crap, I love you, kulor impersonator, where do I hear moreIt sounds like it was made with a tracker, but I enjoy the tone it gives. Catchy melody! The panning was a bit odd though.groovy tune, great articulation sequencing on the bassline, though points cut is due to the Amiga MOD hardpanning that I really hate. (guessing this is kulor based on choice of chords) I'd love to hear this 100% FM hahaI feel the panning is a tad too harsh, but that is my only gripe. The song itself is wonderful. Very nice melody and harmonies. All I would ask is to dial in the panning, but that may just be my and my own personal gripe. That flute at 2 mins mark is wild.Love the song-like character of this, I can imagine that synth lead being a vocal line. Super up my alley.I didn't score this as high as some of the other entries just on account of being less fancy with sounds, but that's a bit painful because I bloody love this delightful little elevator jam - maximum heart squeeze. Despite the limitations of this being 4-channel MOD it'd good that you were still able to deploy a lot of the samples. The bassline is particularly interesting with its sample swapping. This sounds pretty good. The music really kicks into gear at around 0:31. The melody also works out great. If I had to list an improvement, it would be to reduce the volume of the drums and chords to allow the melody lines to come out. The flute and marimba feel as if they're being drowned out by the high-pitched percussion instruments. It would also to have the flute and marimba be panned closer to the middle because they're the "main melody".Starts off feeling pretty retro, and then the bass comes in and I feel great. Like I'm playing Outrun or something yknow? Wind in my hair (actually I have no hair) and just cruising down the highway, the sample highway. 0:45 then we know that life is good, looking over at another car with some babes in, they're giving me a wink and I'm saying "babes, there's more to life than women, like a sample pack competition" and then the the foot goes down and the speed goes up! It's also super cool how, thanks to naming conventions, on an alphabetic playlist this directly follows SPC.spc to contrast the way those two systems handle the processing of source waves so differently, and how specific approaches to composition highlight the strengths of either platform. The person responsible for these knows the ins and outs of these aesthetics so well, it's almost trivial to remark on the fact that, despite being incredibly solid entires into this contest, they've managed to create song that could easily stand toe to toe with the best original and/or OST from the representative consoles.Ooh, we're starting off with some real deep jungly vibes, huh? There's a lot of nice funk in this contest. I'm not sure I like the usage of this saw lead. I feel like you need a little more processing on it, it doesn't feel like it's in the same mix environment as the rest of the song. I think, honestly, a little more reverb and maybe some backing chords would have really helped fill it in. Maybe even just the latter It feels to me like the spectrum is lacking in the middle tones. It's alright, but as a whole, the song didn't seem like it developed much beyond the original melody. 1:56 is definitely the strong point in this song!love how you switched between the bwow and the crude buster FM basses
this has a really nice feel overall

Tracker music is an awesome niche, and I think this is a solid representative of it. The panning is a little hard, but that's par for the genre. Love the hook, the melody, and the chords. Funky af. Solid song structure is a plus.

I lol'd a lottricksters always win. need for speed hot pursuit 2. got rich quick. dangerous friends.unexpected covers! huge stuff, in the best possible way, drums not too overpoweringWERE COVERS ALLOWED...!!! !? this song owns. I especially salute this song for amazing use of servo.wav..... also really good shakuhachiThere are so many cool textures in this song. Love how the SFX blends in seemlessly with the rhythm. Great shakuhachi use.great remix, but scoring low because it is a remix of multiple songs. Very mechanical sounding. 3min mark gets very cool with that running fm bassline.Very nice drums here. Ok, this is another song that makes me feel like FZeroGX driver songs. Nice use of Brahms sample. Ok this is Metroid for sure. Good stuff either way. Love the deep sounds this makes. Love the change up at 2:30. Now it's more Primish than anything. And, at 3 mins we are now at the final part of the game. Solid work.Unbelievable. The use of the samples here, and what is achieved with them, is stunning. And that's without saying anything about the songwriting, which is superb: the melodies are not missing a single note. Everything sits in its right place, and fantastic transitions into different moods. The moment at 3:37 is so climactic. Incredible buildup.Nice Plok remix at 2:30! I didn't catch the other cover references (Bomberman and Metroid), even in the title... although they may have sounded familiar...Looks like somebody missed the memo about SPC being a contest for original music ~ yikes! It's likely my fault for not making that plainer in writing somewhere. Fortunately we got a really nice techno remix of Metroid as a consequence so I can't say I'm too bothered, and doesn't do much harm anyway. Very deep sound processing on display here, of course entirely in keeping with what this competition is about. It's very surprising what can be achieved with junk sounds.I like the use of the famous Bomberman Theme is this music. I can also tell that you're trying to follow the pattern of theme repeatedly even when the Bomberman Theme is not playing explicitly. As for improvements, I think this piece would be better if you trimmed out some variations and not have it play past 4 minutes since it starts to sound repetitive afterwards. The drum and chords backing also changes very infrequently.I get excited whenever this one comes on I am SO ready to listen to it. I LOVE red brinstar from super metroid (piece of music ) and the way that's mixed into the arrangement- particularly the EmuII-shakuhachi is such a WORLD . I actually am not really a fan of boss from plok, if it were a different song I would be more exicted, but all the parts with red brinstar and THE PART WITH AL LTHreE SONGS COMBINEcd are extremely well done and take me to a world of dreams............ {{{{{{Part 36: (FINAL BOSS) You've found it, the core where you're supposed to place all of the artifacts you've fou- WHAT is going on?! Well...it looks like the entire building is being lifted up out of these depths, up into the sky above the planet. and you've just activated a doomsday laser that's pointed down at the planet and you hear a timer count down. ALL While another DEFENSE MECHANISM (a transforming mechanical monster seemingly derived from aspects of the popular Ancient Entertainment Series: Plok, Metroid and Bomberman) prepares to destroy you. Can you defeat this machine AND figure out how to stop the doomsday device before time runs out?!}I have to be careful because if I were to share all my thoughts on this one I'd need several paragraphs so I'll try to keep it somewhat concise. The level of skill and ingenuity on display here, to create note just one but a medley of vgm covers, that not just compositionally but TEXTURALLY evoke the spirit of 3 different OSTs, perfectly using the spc samples and just building as a fucking phenomenally well put together medley/arrange that could easily make it onto a professional arrange album. This is in a completely different class. I really hope this doesn't get disqualified for being a cover... in my opinion, that just made it a much bigger challenge to pull off, and like... the level of execution here is pretty insane.Ooh, a nice heavy bass that reverberates in my ears! This sounds great with headphones. Are you going for industrial-like music here, I wonder? Wait, huh? I recognize this. Was that............ the dig-dug theme? I'm probably so far off... oh, okay, it must have been bomberman, 'cause we're in the metroid now. Okay, I get it, hehe. But you know what, this sounds heckin' cool. I love weird alternative remixes like this! It has a weird industrial tribal vibe to it, and I don't get to hear music like this every day! I have to say I'm a fan of this all, as far as remixes go. I don't ever remember there being a remix in the SPC before, so this is a first for me here. Honestly, the slow, steady development and strong percussion makes me want to guess KungFuFurby, but I already have a stronger guess under his name. ...now what's this last remix?LOVE THE INDUSTRIAL VIBE

the 2005 ocremix vibes tho...... are mostly silly lmao

another really good use of the shakuhachi in this SPC.
for metroid. but ok.

tbh this would rank higher if it focused solely on the indstrial vibe, no vgm references.

still good tho
Ahh, the one people were all "yeah the rules didn't say 'no covers' but uh maybe no covers" about in the listening party. If my previous SPC entries were disqualified based on containing or being based on unoriginal material, that'd probably be like half of them. :P I only really recognize the bomberman tune in this, though I'm told there are other references too. Good sound, good structure. There's something of an 00's OCRemix sensibility to the track.

A-lister. arena rock. wir kinder babsi jacketnice synth solo, solid use of the ol' i-bVII-bVI-bVII progression (with pedal sometimes and extensions)Vibes in spades. It's extremely cool. Uses its samples really well!!I dig the chill 80s/90s vibe with the rhodes and choice drumset. I do feel that the chords and rhythm stays too static throughout the song, although they really set the mood!hearin the funky. Sounds more like 80s synthpop pastiche than jungle inspired tho. Bit too cheesy song-wise, and it's the sort of cheese I am sick of on 80s radio hahaVery solid percussion here. Sounds like Donkey Kong's plumbing pipeline. Love the harmony in this. Love everything in this. The CHORDS. And what an expert use of reverb.Aw yeah welcome to the mid-80s funk soul groove! Could easily have been a backing track for likes of Anita Baker, Jaki Graham and the like! It might not be the most showy entry of the bunch but it's a style that appeals to me personally I guess :) nice one. Works very complimentary with "5.25"; songs that were separated at birth?!The overall beat and melody is pretty good. I also like how you repeat the flute to emphasize the acoustics in the jungle up through the canopies. However, I find your drums to be too loud which makes it hard to me to hear the little riffs and jungle sound effects starting 0:21 and 1:19 respectively. In your drums, it appears you also used bongos which got drowned out by loud and heavy use of cymbals.I think I started writing some 80s story to this in discord like "they killed my brother and I'm gonna get the bastards that killed him!". Damn I can't think what that lead bell sample is, it almost sounds like collecting rings in sonic and other songs used it too. Make me wish I used it. 1:01 nice change here, nice melody. 1:12 those quick little flicks of the melody are really cool. The high pitch jimmy laugh...has that been edited? Or was it just straight up just pitched higher? Either way I liked it. One of the entries the makes really lovely use of the chord samples in the pack. Similar to 5.25, you get that extra bit of dissonance often times on the final chord in the cycle which makes for such a satisfying turnaround. The layers in this all work so nicely, not to mention the funky as all heck bass lines in there. This is just some insanely solid groove writing. The high pitch jimmy carr laugh percussion also comes off as so much more than just a novelty here and just feels like this... just awesome layer of rhythmic intrigue. I love stuff like that in SPC where you hear things that make you want to go back and write 5 more entries just to explore all the other possibilites these samples offer. That speaks to the power of the songs creator, to create that kind of inspiration.Oh, this is a genre I think I like a lot! Like, I'm getting neon lights and rainy streets and silhouettes. It's very retro. Like 80s funk callback stuff. A lot of megaman feels. It has the wistful kind of vibe that begs me to listen to this in my car when I drive at sundown.good. funky. a strong opening, if we're going by the order in the scoresheet, which I am. Good stuff, and nice variety in such a short song.Instantly good. Perfect all the way through.Short and somewhat surreal...Short-lived and crazy! Would have liked longer but what's there is very intriguing and expressive.I like the progression of chords in the beginning of the music. It sounds very computer-techno-like (Colress from Pokemon Black/White 2). The transition to another style was also adequate. One improvement I would suggest is to lower the volume of the flute and digitized bells since they can be piercing to the ears. Overall, a pretty decent piece. For just over a minute I was quite into the whole thing. The start is tight and 0:17 is a nice little glitchy run up there. The rhythm after this is tight. The vibe at 0:36 is great too, the synth/string going on there sounds a lot like a string from FF7 which I loved. If this were longer I'd be giving higher marks, the THX ending as well was a nice touch haha. Yeah wish this was longer! This is MY ENTRY. I made it and as such it is catered to my tastes so I am fond of it on that level. It's definitely far from what I intended, what it could've been, didn't get to spend much time on it (made in just ~2-3 hours total mostly). Especially mad at myself for not having the time to incorporate a wider variety of samples, I intended to include at least a little bit of every sample, instead this is dominated by the samples I submitted myself haha oops. A lot of things in the production were actually cleaner originally and then I messed them up accidentally and didn't have enough time to fix it lol. At the very least, I'm happy with it compositionally, it's very "Chimeratio music", things I do a lot tonally/rhythmically (polymeter, ambiguous/mixed meter, delibarately jarring chord planing/transposing and odd chord voicing, quartal madness, general glitchiness, overt harshness and trippiness, etc) , but those things are things I like! Also it's essentially 2 unrelated unfinished spc entries squashed together (it should be obvious where the split is lol). typing more at a later time: this ended up sliding down my ranked list.
it's sonically weak to an extent that it suffers compared to the bangers spread around here.

ive complimented the shakuhachi in some other entries, here's one where it has a problem: too loud

the high frequency distortion, while a cool effect, makes the rest of the mix sound hollow

also it cuts off too quickly, though i cant cast any stones in that regard. i have a shorter entry lmao

The changing tempo thing is one of the coolest ideas I've heard in a while, nice.the messiah. the cool one- are you an athlete? healing melody. perfect judgementreally cool tempo fuckery, very measured intro (and outro, too) that makes the pace of the 7 minute song work really well. the first melody drop 2 minutes in is acesThis song is great. The main conceit of the BPM of the entire song following the pitch/speed shift of the main sample is genius. Also uh is this based on the descending-pitch sample from that eroge? How was it righted to be monotonal? I'm flabbergasted.I liked the earlier parts, very soothing. However I felt it was a bit too long and dragged on after awhile.pitch-driven tempo is a great composition idea. Not a fan of the melody lead though.Sounds like I got lost in the sewers... Of a sunken ship deep in the bermuda triangle. The constant change in pace of the drums really adds to the lost at deep bottoms of the sea feel. I feel maybe a change in the lead would help a ton for such a long song. Almost has a Metroid Prime feel to it at some points (just a tiny bit).I always love tempo changes, and I'd never seen them incorporated into something so relaxing. The arrangement is perfect.Guessing kfaraday as the artist. Primarily because of tempo inconsistencies caused by utilizing one of the samples, but also because I recognize this style somewhat from a few of your Battle of the Bits entries. I also retroactively realized that technically this fits with another entry, A Day in the Land of The Hungry Games.Love how people guessed this as being mine just due to the presence of Major 7ths. :D Damn stereotypes. This is a curious and quirky song, with interesting use of sounds. I felt it went on too long without justification, felt more could happen or develop in that time, but ahh, it's still good, and used some of the samples that were generally avoided by other entries.This music was very difficult to listen to being too repetitive and random for my taste. I also feel that the choice of drums used don't fit well to the rest of the music with an overload of bongo drums playing from both left and right speakers. The background chords are used are good but the melody could benefit from editing as they sounds like random notes popping up from nowhere. I also find the constant speeding up and slowing down of the tempo to not work well with the music.The atmosphere in this song is really nice at times, it starts off really enticing and the percussion is done well too. But after the first two minutes when the synth melody comes in I felt like I wasn't paying as much attention, I guess I'm just not into this sort of progressive music but I was hoping between the 2nd and 7th minute something would jump out and mix things up a little. I think I'd have marked higher if it were shorter."lyrics ""we are the crystal gems "" "" I'm a lonely boy"" ""I'm here for MORE 430294590385irtkgsr"", this isvery ALIVE . I love constant tempo changing as a thing, so aligning that constant tempo changing with a sample pitch/speed....entire thing chord planing transposing like a MARBLE MAZE and the tempo changes aligned with that. COOL}
I have some moderately mixed feelings about this track. On my first listen I was super impressed by the concept. It's certainly something I'd never have considered doing and a really original concept. The whole track is adapting to the tempo of the main sample as it changes pitch. I was so just.. floored by that conceptually on first listen, I didn't stop to really take into account how much I enjoyed the actual experience of listening to it, though that is a deeply personal thing and not really sure it should effect my score for the song. I would say given the somewhat sparse nature of the layering, it does sometimes leave me feeling a bit unsatisfying and wishing it would either grow larger in texture as things progress or stay for longer at a single tempo. Again more a personal preference than anything. Just on the grounds of innovation I have to give major kudos for who ever is responsible for this one.The way it enters reminds me of a C418 song. I half expected some vol 2 minecraft music to begin playing. But when it gets going, it reminds me a LOT more of the Kaiba OST. That's a GOOD thing. :oooo
It has a very spacy wistful vibe, like a spaceship leaving earth and drifting into the stars and losing sight of home. There's some sleepy, existential emotions here, and -- oh, this percussion is so deliciously fitting. It would have been fine without a melody, too, but I'm not complaining. It's so curious how the tempo picks up and slows down the way it does. I'm really interested in hearing this one develop! It's getting a lot more complex than I expected it to based on the intro.
It might be way off, but a part of me is guessing Lunar, just because this reminds me a lot of some Wagyan Paradise music. Was that an inspiration by any chance?

By now our spaceship is far out into space and is shooting past nebulas and asteroid belts and all sorts of never-before-seen sights that know no match. It's beautiful! The tempo changes make my mind picture a warp drive activating and stopping every little bit.

I wonder if you had anything similar in your mind at all when you made it? I don't feel like the average person would be able to instantly like this song, but you definitely caught my attention quite fast with it, and when I closed my eyes and listened (that's a lie, I'm typing) it held my attention through the whole thing. Very good job!!! :D

SampleS1 turned out to be the thing that sparked my interest and fueled my participation in this Sample Pack Contest. (The string pad chord sample? Of course that's the one that grabbed me.) I was curious what it would sound like if I attempted to undo the pitch bend that dominates the sample. I managed to come up with something close by drawing pitch channel pitch events by hand in FL Studio, but the result had the sound of a slightly warped vinyl record. It sounded kind of neat. The hand-flattened sample showed that the sample consists of basically a couple bars of a string chord with a hand drum line on top of it, plus a couple extra final drum beats at the end. I liked the way the sample sounded when I set the loop region to the second bar of the sample. I quickly realized that I was not going to be able to separate the strings from the drums. If it's possible, it's beyond my skillset. So my string chord and my tempo were going to have to vary at the same time. I'd experimented with this idea in the last Sample Pack Contest I entered, and the result was interesting but underdeveloped ("Smoothdrummy" in SPC4). The way I implement it is by linking my project tempo in FL Studio to a Fruity Keyboard Controller that has been set up in such a way that when the Fruity Keyboard Controller is given the same piano roll input as the sample that dictates the tempo, the tempo is adjusted to follow the pitch of the sample. Setting up a Fruity Keyboard Controller to do this is extremely tedious if done by hand, because the appropriate tempo has to be calculated for each note. Instead of doing that, I reverse engineered enough of the Fruity Keyboard Controller preset file format to allow me to write a script (in Perl, my go-to scripting language) to generate a preset file when given a reference tempo and a reference note that tempo should be associated with. All the rest of the tempos are calculated and associated with the appropriate notes. This was very helpful, as the reference note and tempo changed a few times during the development of my entry. At this point I have the unbending of SampleS1 approximated by hand, and the tempo matching mechanism in place, and I'm back to "okay I have this two chord loop and the ability to have the tempo change based on whatever other pitch I want to play the chord at. Now what do I do with it?" I wasn't totally happy with the hand-flattened sample. While its warpedness sounded neat when played alone, it seemed to me that it was not going to play well with others when I tried to add other voices or rhythms. It seemed to me that there would be some way to flatten the sample more evenly and precisely. Apparently I can't pass up an opportunity to do a little math and programming on the side, especially when it means I'll have a sound nobody else is likely to have in their tracks. This is one of the first times I've encountered a problem where calculus was the right tool for solving it, and I was delighted. The pitch bend in the original sample sounded linear. If you have a waveform (a series of n samples evenly spaced over some amount of time) and you bend it, you are varying the playback rate of the waveform. If you want to undo a pitch bend applied to a waveform, you need to play back the bent waveform in such a way that the result is the original waveform. If you know how the bend was made, you can make a playback rate function that describes the transformation the original waveform underwent to become the bent waveform. Once you have that playback rate function, you can derive a complementary playback rate function that describes the transformation the bent waveform must undergo to become the original waveform. Therefore, if you have a bent waveform and can describe the pitch bend in that waveform, you can come up with a function that will allow you to reconstruct the original unbent waveform. I wrote another Perl script to unbend a waveform assuming a linear pitch bend had been applied to the original waveform to get the bent waveform. This turned out to be good enough to flatten SampleS1. I was so excited! Sure, there are some odd artifacts in the result, but I like the way they sound, so that's fine. Basically, the rest of the track exists because I wanted to make those two weird things I used code and math for actually be listenable. :D Hopefully it worked. :) There's a lot about the track I think needs to be changed or improved to complete it, but I probably won't ever get around to it.

I feel the main synth restricted the song a bit though, since it spiked in volume after 1 second.very very very interesting key changes. Nice idea using that powerline pulse interface hum as a violin. Also another example of pitch driven tempo. Would have got more points if it were longer (also hi kfaraday)Final Fantasy meets the Wind Fish, meets Yoshi's Island.. That is the only way I can describe this with words. Wish it was longer. Good stuff, but I just wanted more.Lovely Kirby-like song. Love the mix between clean "musical box" sounds and saturated synth.Although basic in execution, I ended up liking this one in overall feeling. Much more humble than the others. Unfortunately, it also doesn't make it to a minute before looping... and fading out. Strangely, I'm also finding this one to be the catchiest of the bunch as the days passed after listening to all of the entries. This is gorgeous aaaaaa. Love the harmonies. I wish it was longer/there was more of it, and that there had been a bit of sound normalisation on the bitmap sweep (undoubtedly one of the most difficult sounds in the pack to work with.) Hope you come back for the next contest cuz I need more of this.I like how this piece is simple in composition. The melody selected is decent as well. However, the saw wave is way too loud and sticks out from the rest of the instruments. I also don't like excessive amount of static noise coming from the saw wave, especially when compared to the other instruments that sound cleaner with little to noise heard.Another short and sweet song. This was one I found really enjoyable as a composition but one I found to be the most out of place in the contest because I didn't really recognize the samples. The crunchy lead was nice and the section at 0:30 was very plesant. The song loops and fades at 0:52....yeah it's such a short piece, one I'd love to have been longer and use more samples.hi keffie faraday. ? ?!?! the extremely blunt use of the harsh sound of the sample it's using as a lead and how ORGANIC it manages to make the extremely mechanical labyrinth of time sample is wonderful {{{{{{Part 12: (Dungeon 3B: Ancient Jungle Ruins Part 2) this portion of the labyrinth is much friendlier. very organic...it almost feels like it's...alive? more spirally than jagged, more path-like than maze-like. While on the one hand as an entry into an SPC, this might be slightly weak by 'some' highly questionable objective standards. Just being.. first of all relatively short, only using hand full of samples, using them in a way that doesn't necessarily do anything that would make me think... yes that is absolutely the perfect sample for the song, wow this person found some unexpected hidden strength in the sample, what an insight. Setting all that aside. Writing multi part counterpoint that works along with a single pitch shifting sample and then evolving into the completely inimitable style of frenetic completely genius fluid organic modern chamber electronic song writing... even though it's that short and under-developed.... just on a personal level, that appeals to me so deeply, it's impossible for me not to give this a super high score. Experimental and pop.Other than the unusual opening, no further comments. The theme song to Jimmy Carr's late night talk show. Another very AUTHOR song. Masterful use of the shaku and of course, copious Jimmy Carr laughing...While I like your wide usage of sound effects, I feel that overall composition sounds messy. You should try to incorporate some kind of rhythm when you let loose a series of differet sound effects in the beginning of the music. I also find the second melody line hard to hear with the raspy strident synth. The synth is at times ear-piercing. Good progression of different keys though.Jimmy no, whatever I did Jimmy I swear I can make it right. Oh ok he's gone. Yeah! This song is such a good time. It's like...all the elements just don't stop giving. I can't predict how this song will move it just does it so fluently. 1:04 cool use of the shaku, and we're back to crazy moving area again haha. I love the use of the laugh, the texture of it layers with other stuff is so great that I kind of forget what it is but know it's adorable at the same time. This was just completely feel good throughout.dhg style is so ridiculously specific but I love it!! this isn't my favorite example of it but it makes me happy regardless. after this song ended while typing this comment I involuntarily spouted out the word "ACE" very loudly so maybe you should be proud of that {{{{{{Part 32: DESTINY TOWN. what a strange name for a town. This place is pretty happy and content with itself for a town that rests on one of the most FORBIDDEN mountains on the planet . . . a "volcano" with an interior that supposedly leads to "HELL", or at least that's what everyone calls it. But from the information you've gathered, this is where you must venture and take the arficacts you've gathered to save and fix this world}I'll be pretty suprised if this isn't by the same author as GTGT. As such, it posseses pretty much all the same delightful qualitifes that the first song had, only it is slightly shorter and less developed. It does have the one huge strength which the other doesn't have, it being another song, like Placque, that uses the shakuhachi vibrato portion of the sample really well, by choosing the perfect places to land those sustained notes where they really get to shine. Even with that added benefit though, it's hard not to see this as just kind of, while still delicious, more of an appetizer to the main dish of GTGT. I apologize especially if these are two different artists, the work of one should not effect the other in that way, but the style is so ridiculously similar, it would quite shocking to me if this is the case! This was me on my keyboard with this sample earlier this month, real chipmunk hours. HUH. I didn't expect it to suddenly get so funky. Another Shakuhachi lead, eh? I'm not good enough at musical theory to grasp exactly what you do to give songs like this such a bouncy, fantastical vibe. I don't really know anyone else who does this sort of thing (of course, I'm guessing DHG again for this one). It feels like most funk goes the safer, punk archetypes.DEVIL'S BUTTCRACK 2
except no it's the dusthillguy

it hits all right right notes and is a fun time.
for some reason I really enjoy how the shakuhachi fits in here. it usually sounds a bit out of place (even in my own entry) but this just...works?

Melody trading back and forth between voices is a nice touch. The carr laugh used for chords reminds me of "GTGT (Moving from the past into the future)". Some catchy parts. Pretty solid structure. Ending is awfully abrupt. It's interesting, but also a bit of a putoff.

Good job cleaning up those beeps from that vocal quote. Love the sample processing used here to fit the theme of the beat.Oh god. So deep. This is DOG beats. Very solid ideas here. Very good percussion oh god. So crunchy and I love the dog barking fight sample. I can't stop laughing at how fun this is to listen to.How is this made with the sample pack? Sounds perfect. Sounds so wild, I love it. The transition from like drill and bass to like hip hop is incredible. No comment.Propa nasty tune m8. Deserves accolades for making best use of the blank diskette sample which was damn hard to use (how on earth did you get those distorted squares out of it so seamlessly?!) Very original with sounds, nice one.Well, I'm not a big fan of listening to something that sounds like a sample to test out subwoofers. However, the rhythm and backing track are pretty good and I like the variation of different sound effects and drum beats used throughout the music despite the repetitive bass. The volume control is also spot on here. This being less than 2 minutes and getting a high score for me is testament to how much I enjoyed it. 0:20 bass snare drums this is rock and roll! (And that fucking synth is crazy good). 0:38 slick fuckin' percussion. 0:48 but then fuck me, honestly man I get little shivers when this comes in, this is when the score GOES UP. The acid is fucking cool man, and I'm also getting Jet Set Radio vibes, love that soundtrack. This is not the most complicated thing but so damn effective. 1:13 DOPE, so good. Again I love the style of SPC, where the samples become such an important part of the composition, that if you were to switch one out for another wav file, it wouldn't just change some small timbral aspect of the song, it would literally alter the composition. So many great moments in the track, just loving every new turn, I do wish It could have gone one for longer. Bass Snare Drums This is Rocknroll. The Tempo change right before the RRN Synth entry is the coolest sample highlight, it's like shining the spotlight. I love that choice as well, still really sad it just kind of peters out at the end. i think this one's kinda rough but i REALLY love some of the sections. ive just no idea how to expand them lol

i used a piano roll for this one, wowe. still played by ear, lots of half-steps.

i tried to hide the saminess by using a different sample instead of "FIGHT!"
there wasn't a "HEY!" sample so i used jimmycarlaughing.wav

ultra precise. rhymthmic secrets. ancient. brand newa fantastic use of the kirby 64 bell sample, also I really loved the synth bass here and all the off-kilter drumsyeah i love this song. I've been thinking about the potential of using a dial up sound musically for a while now and this song Goes For It. When this song goes IDM breakbeat it just speaks to me. Also it uses Mallet_C.wav as a bass sound which is extremely based. I love this song!!!!!I liked the whole tone mysteriousness of the beginning. Ghost of 90's past?interesting softcore breakcore. Liking the chords, but overall it's a bit of a hard listen. Like the melody ideas here though.Of course we have to have the obvious sample here. It sounds like we are trying to connect to Mother Brain. Nice vocals here. Rhythm gets odd at 1:30 ish. I guess it works, but it's a difficult at first, once we get back to smoother rhythms it's all good.LOVE the Squarepusher-style bass solo, erratic drums and Metroid Prime-style "cold and eerie" pads in the background. Love the melodic breakdown at around 2:10, the atonal way that melody is resolved.Evil dialup song... at least to begin with. Then becomes very lyrical and soulful! The drums are particularly intrestin. This music was very difficult to listen to being too chaotic and random for my taste. It doesn't feel that there is some sort of rhythm or pattern that is governing the music and keeping all the musical notes and sound effects in sequence. The transition to a different style at 1:29 also feels too rough and abrupt. Excellent use of pitch bends to modify the sound effects though.Modem Madness! The sample is just used straight and then starts getting used in different more atmospheric and melodic ways, love that. This is so creepy though like a Mario Ghost House or something. The Toooh! Voice sample is used well, all the voices here really add to the song and the modem is flipping out man haha. This song just builds layers for the first minute. Oh yes the Venetian Snare style drums at 1:30! Really cool idea. 1:52 even this guitar use reminds of something from Super Mario World. 2:10 really nice section here, love the change of rhythm in the bass, the velocties are done so well. 2:30 rhythm switch up again! This is one of the two that I wrote very hastily and mostly just having fun with the samples, not really doing much in the way of song writing. Based on listening party reactions I could tell neither of them were particularly exciting but I still have a fond spot for them. Also there's a thing of in this one I'm proud of where the final melody works at two different tempos. On repeat while the whole track slows down by 33%, the melodic figure does not, it stays at the same tempo for the repeats but still lines up with the groove.Wait, I'm actually liking this, and I took it as a joke entry in the first few seconds. But woah, that saw synth lead has some SERIOUS pokemon mystery dungeon vibes!!! It's so ominous!!! The format of this song reminds me a lot of Flow from the Fez OST. I hope it's not annoying that I keep comparing it to other things. When I closed my eyes, the mental image that came to mind was of a little kid adventuring into a forbidden cave. The overworld music fades out, and this strange tune represents the tiptoeing descent into a mysterious place. As he ventures deeper, shimmering stones twinkle around him in the dim light from his flashlight. (The nichijou sample here sounds really natural!)
Oh, now we're funky, aren't we? It broke my mental picture for a bit, because it was pretty unexpected, but it's still very pleasant. Perhaps the boy ran into a monster, and his heart is beating really fast as he hides behind a pillar as the shadow passes? Yeah, I like this. It's very adventurous, a bit in every aspect.
this is just.... REALLY GOOD contextualization of the samples.
and then the second half goes all idm/braindance/whatever.

I loved seeing everyone respond to it in real time and guess at who it was :3The sentence-making with the vocal samples is greatI love the fun atmosphere of this song, it sounds like someone having a good time. My favorite section was around 1:38, I liked the improvisation style and how many samples were used to say that liner about "smoking a nice hit". However, I did feel the song has a bit too many themes, almost could be broken into many songs.quite unusual. Some interesting ideas. Love the vocal splicing hahaRight away, we get blown in the face by solid Jazz. Oh god. Did it just say "I need to smooke weed high cat"... I do. Made me laugh haha. These voice speech are so funny and perfect. Love the song, and love the variety.
Sound production is solid. Great outro.
Wow, as I'm saying in many of these songs, the use of atonality here is phenomenal. I can't believe these basslines and weaving melodies that never clash despite being so wild. Super into this kind of stuff. Not sure what to make of this... surreal, to say the least. There's some really lulzy juxtapositions in this song. Jamming the blues scale over everything not observing harmony had me laughing a bit. No fucks given! One wonders what N. F. B. stands for - will author reveal? I failed to comprehend the vocal mashup business but greatly approve of its presence, there wasn't enough of that this contest. I like that you incorporated a large number of the sounds overall too.I like the chords and melodies used throughout this music. The transitions to different styles of music is also spot on especially with that organ at 3:24. The drums are pretty catchy and decent too. If I had to list an improvement, I would check on some of the key that the chords are playing in as they sometimes deviate from the overall key the music is playing. This was one that was super entertaining throughout. Lots of samples used well. Especially the vocal stuff...I need to smoke weed and get high to forget? Haha, they went down really well in the listening party. 1:38 is a pretty slick groovy section, very clean. Oh man I can finally kick back and smoke a nice something bowl? Haha yes yes. Section at 3:20 was a lot of fun. Yeah good stuff.this isn't my thingks but there's some neat things maybe ? ? I don't like how blues-scale-y it is but I like whenever it does something weird' this feels like it's supposed to be aa song but instead of being a song it's a person who legally changed their name to "force field" so that they would not be detected by the force field preventing them from entering the inside of this song. this is a very odd mix of things i really like and dont but regardless I like the atmospher[]e and any time it does something "interesting" to ME {{{{{{Part 30: welcome to KAERB ECNARELOT CITY, this place is just a little off... Given that, it will probably continue to evolve moving forward. Because of that, my vote here will likely not be representative on whatever my final take is. Some of my all time favorite songs started out this way for me... at first not knowing how to feel, than gradually coming to terms with their utter brilliance. Juries still out on where that will be the case with this one, but I'm certainly open to the possibility that it might be. As it is now, my current stance is that there are a whole bunch of cool moments in here, but also some sections that I think maybe could be cleaned up/more well thought out. Like if this person had had an additional week to even further refine the piece, it may have ended up being an absolute MASTERPIECE... though, as I said, I am open to the possibility that it might already be that, and I just haven't given it enough listens/time to gel with me for me to realize that. My score is based on my current feelings toward the track, and I apologize ahead of time to my future self in case I end up strongly disagreeing.Oh, it seems like you've used the organ similar to how I did! It makes such pleasant sounds at high pitches with a nice delay. ^^ This seems wandery, I can't establish what feeling the song is trying to give me.

Oh gosh, are you okay? If you need to talk, I'm always available, hehe... Okay, seriously, I LOVE this vocal splicing. I haven't seen as much of it this contest as I expected yet. I swear I recognize several melodies at the 2:25 mark, but I can't put a name to any of them before they disappear into something else. That's strange. I like your snare in the back. I can't tell quite what sample is being used for that. And how it gets brushy at 3:23! I like this section of the song most. I'm really not sure how to feel about this one. It's a little beyond me right now, but I feel like I might come back to it later and like it more when I've broken in the melody a bit.

Some of the most creative sample use in the compo!martial. scenic hygeine. high end shampoo. excellent pacing.sick tribal atmosphere (DKC vibes), especially the little layer of 16th note high toms on top. I loved the introduction of the guitar in the second half. outro was a good cooldown but would've been more effective if there'd been more of a crescendo leading into it (I wanted more of those quick triplets!)Delighted by this song that has no EDM in it whatsoever. During the live listen I laughed a loud at the way this song was using every vocal sample in succession in a way that nonetheless worked perfect. I can't listen to this song without imagining a Super Mario RPG kind of game playing out in front of my eyes. It's great.Has got great atmosphere! Has that nomadic asian frontier vibe. Giddyup!Liking the safari ambience feel of this. now this is jungle ambience. (guessing this is kungfufurby)haha, the percussion has a David Wise feel to me. Makes me wanna go play some DKC.. Nice use of vocals. The ambience here is real, but it suits the style very well. Definitely gives me some DKC vibe. Nice how you somehow got the raw version of samples to actually work along with this. Solid work overall. The rhythm change in 3 mins in is a bit odd, but I guess it works. Last min of the song has a metroid vibe to it.This is amazingly ambiety. In an album with so many intense tracks, I love how this sounds like a movie OST or a Jon Hassell piece. This is my song! I had plans for a series of songs based off of what little was revealed of "The Hungry Games" which was supposed to be hosted on Battle Of The Bits by kfaraday back in 2015 using a Hunger Games simulator. It only got as far as the first series of skits... and I was one of the ones that got reeled in, as the richest BOTBers (members of Battle of the Bits with the most b00ns, which is their currency) were all involuntarily put into this game. I had plans for more, but I abandoned the effort initially due to getting distracted by other compos, and later on due to losing interest. I may revive the idea for subsequent compos...This takes me back to the late 90s, playing Turok: Dinosaur Hunter on N64. Can anybody relate?! It sounds like what it's called, for sure. Intriguing atmosphere. You were very confident about the sacred ohms at the end!Well, I'm not a big fan of listening to battle music, but this music overall is acceptable. I feel that the drum beats are a little loud to the point where it gets hard to hear the other instruments starting at 1:00. Toning down the drum beats can help make the piece sound more like an orchestra piece with different instruments taking their turn to play.I initially started off really liking the beat of this, very tribal or asiany. Could be something in Turok! So I was into the idea for the first minute even if the samples were used quite plainly, however the rest of the song is very similar and I kept waiting to hear something grasp my attention. Perhaps that's not a fair judgement, as the kind of piece this is is consistent and new ideas come every few moments. The flute with the schubert sample was actually a really good idea. The ending is quite nice too, very subtle and the bells are effective.I love all of tghe "chrono trigger modulation chord changes" and the samples used are great picks for what this is. random triplet section is so good aaaahhhhh. That was a truly magical journey for me. I realize how simple and understated that soundtrack was but somehow the atmosphere was just right for the setting. There are so many cool little subtle ambient layering touches in this one that I notice more and more on repeated listens. Even the use of the guitar strums, it's really brilliant, all the layers do something to enhance the texture, nothing is overlooked or wasted. A truly immersive auditory experience, putting each sound to it's best use. Also the switch to triplet time in the later portion is just so awesome and something I never saw coming, the way the gradually evolving textures and hypnotic rhtyhms had lulled me into a sense of meditative complacency. That always pays off so nicely on each listenImmediate guess of KungFuFurby. In a similar vein to some of the past KungFuFurby entries, it has strong percussion beats, and a very wild, tribal vibe. I love this kind of thing! It makes me think of wilderness and torches in the darkness, and perhaps some sort of preparation for battle? When the arp comes in in the background, it creates a melancholy around it, which only increases. Such a strange feeling. I thought it might develop into something more intense, but it instead takes on a much more mystical feeling, like a ritual of some sort. This kind of music could surround histories lost to time. The guitar is super clean. I love hearing every time it makes a sound...

This end section is a very strange kind of exit from a song. The low ambient droning... It makes me wonder what you had in mind when you made it!

immediate. firm and martial. the beginning of a long probationhaha, great duet between shaku and scream. luscious chords tooThis song stacks a lot of chord samples on top of each other and doesn't give a damn how they overlap. i can respect thatThe part around 1:58 is excellent, especially with the AAAHS with the drums.that's one expert shakuhachi player, able to sound like a flute player and everything! Not sure who this is. Could be kungfufurby but otherwise not sure.Sorry, but you can't dodge taxes. EVER. Maybe.. Anyway, great use of the flute sample. And the watery sounds are also nice. Love how it feels at 1:30 mark. The drums that come after are also very nice. Great THX outro. That transition at 0:59 kills me, it's so good. And the "screamed" melody that comes in is very good. I love the way this song builds up, melodically, the way ideas fuse into other ideas, and I am huge fan of powerful melodic loops that serve as the climax to a song. The way it ambiently finishes is perfect, too.Unfortunately, no one is too handsome to do taxes. This one wins the award for best song title, and maybe best shaku, too. I get some Michael Jackson vibes listening to this, is that a strange thing to express? I enjoyed the ultra garagey-shuffley-2step rhythms later in the song.Hmm... I wonder how the music fit the "Too Handsome to do Taxes" title? While you have an OK backing track with the flute and ambient leads, I feel that different sounds and sound effects that play throughout the music don't fit together well. At least, try to pitch the different sounds so that they match the key that the backing track is playing in.Fuck the taxes man, just get good looking! And this song definitely gets some good looks. I just noticed a very low use of shaku at 0:25, that's a cool idea. Overall the shaku use is just really nice, very fluid and very organic. 0:58 is a tight little change up, great synth use, then AHHH haha yeah it's getting better. 1:30 daaay, dayooodayoooo love it. But then that beat at 1:43, fuckin' slick. Comes out of nowhere but is very welcome and I love the hi hat stuff, gives a unique flair to that beat. Those organ runs are dope too. I think the way I approached it unforuntately, didn't give the proper introduction to the sample to make this work as nicely as I'd have liked.I'm just in love with this shakuhachi sample, I think. Panning on the lead is maybe a bit too far to the right at times, but this is only a minor complaint, and not enough to impact the score by much. Great feel at 3 mins in. Love those organ chords. Overall great song.Very well mixed, everything sits so well in the mix. I like the old videogame feel this has, I can really pictrue a side-scroller somehow. Just needs a plummy-accented English bloke reciting a tale of chivalry, wizards and mythical beasts over the top...The drum beats and the chords are pretty good but the different melody lines sound so-so. Also, for some reason, I feel that this piece sounds repetitive despite small variations in the drum beats and the melody lines not to mention the organ at the end of the piece. The bassline makes me think of something from Wild Arms or some PS1 JRPG. The organ and flute do some nice harmonies around 0:40. Was it this song I think some people said gave them Chrono Trigger vibes? The choir sound in the background is a neat touch. 2:40 gives me DS Castlevania vibes. 3:30 nice chords here too. I like this song has a theme and an identity, and really it brings me back to my old gaming days which I always appreciate. I think I'd give higher marks if there were some switch up in the progression, it's fairly similar sounding when you skip through the track. However, if I was playing some old game and this was the music for that area, I'd be engaged man, good job.this sounds like "that one simon phillips song", i could be critical of how "13 all the way through in a way that sounds fake and like it's just being in 13 just to be in 13" but I DONT CARE because I LIKE IT. the groove is interesting. there's some times it's really close to doing chord changes i hate and think are cheesy but it does NOT do them and instead does something more boring/arbitrary and I PREFER THAT so thank you for not being emotional so now I can go on a monorail that leads to a chemical plant and sadness {{{{{{Part 33: (Dungeon 7: Descent Part 1) The interior of this "volcano" leads to an infinite-seeming pit of nothing. you see bits of fire and lava pouring out of strange holes in the sides of this cylindrical interior, but it just falls into nothingness below. There's walkways and paths all around that are impervious to these hazards, you're /meant/ to be able to go down here. Eventually it leads to a...starry expanse beneath the earth.}Really neat groove on this one, it's always fun when something religiously adheres to a specific time signature throughout an entire song, despite different sections using different contructions. I also really enjoy how the textures very much evoke the feeling of a kind of retro 90s action rpg, without having to specifically match the sound capabilities or quality of any specific console. Really solid well rounded song writing. I'd say I may hzve enjoyed if this song got a bit more sonically adventurous though this is not something that anybody needs to do out of obligation, I just it would further heighten my enjoyment of the song.Solid enough, but no real comment. You've got a fun progression which reminds me of cave levels here, which are always fun music. ^^this is the most SNES sounding song in the pack.
I don't believe it's actually a SPC tho.

how did you get that bass sound? simple but unique.

overall this song packs the vibe of a daunting task. apocalypse is a fitting title in that case i suppose!

artist guess:

Come on, just call it "vampocalypse". Portmanteaus are everything. A little hollow sounding, but that fits the theme. I get a The Doors vibe from this track. Good structure, melody, harmony, all that stuff.

huge dipole flavor. rthyhm secrets. an incredible temptation.aw yeah we clubbin'. especially loved the goemonpops in the second half and that phaaaat synth rhythm in the last phrase... really wish there was more!!!One whine: This song is TOO SHORT. Man when the lopassed "WRAAAA" sampled happened I laughed so that snot came out of my nostril. This song is genius. (bonus points for great usage of huehuehue and servo.wav) (also bestof_acid!!!!)Great production value, brings in some nice EDM to the batch.glucose-induced euphoria is a thing. Smells of 90s drug party music (yes it's the TB303 acid)Well, the rhythm is really nice. Very deep bassy washy sounds.. Ok. this made me laugh the way it built up to 1 min in. Sounds like one of the driver tracks for FZeroGX. Great stuff.Beeeautifully mixed, how clean it all sounds! The dancey "small room reverb" sounds at 1:00. And generally, the variety of sounds that have been crafted from the samples!!!?? No further comment. There is a simplicity about this track but it's bloody catchy! Definitely seems like a glucose party to me. Great use of the acid sample as well, not many people dared :P kudos. (I noticed the 'dead air' at the end of the song, I'm assuming that wasn't intentional but no worries, I'll trim it off before album releases.)Very decent mix. I like how the bottle pop sound got used in this music, giving it the exciting bouncy bass beats. The surprising vocal chords that pop out randomly from the sides are also a cool effect. If there is one improvement I have to mention, it would be to add some intro attention grabber. The excitement doesn't happen until later in the music.*bops head* 0:30 yeah I was digging how the components were coming together, and that bass at 0:45 is getting me ready to get up and do something I'll regret. Yeeah 1:01 if I was good and tipsy and saw some ladies on the dance floor I'd be bumping hips with them for sure. This will be my new party song. 1:30 acid bass! I was really into how that was used too. Ah yes, like this one a lot, just wish it was longer, I wanted to know how my party night would end.I like the way it plays with the acid bass sound but this song always feels like it has nOTHING in it to me {{{{{{Part 13: ANOTHer shrine? this one seems clearly dedicated to DVDs, a very energetic place. You aqcuire the ENCHANTED DVD relic here}Shifting Gears, this is the first entry where the samples really steal the show over the composition. This is not a bad or good thing really on its own, and I love how there's such a variety in approaches that allow for this to be a thing among many others. This is just a brilliant use of sound to tell a story, each sample and texture just playing out one after the other in a really nice synnergistic sectional give and take. Reminds me of a lot of my favorite dance music that's often made with pre-fab loops, in those cases the artists have their full choice of any samples to source and can pick just the right ones for each moment to build their collages. In this case, the composer being limited by only what's in the sample pack, somehow got just as tight of a classic house banger as a pro might, using a massive library of loops. One really cool sound highlight was the processing on the scream sample, that just works so nicely. It's such a fine line to walk when processing a sample from spcviii, if you make it unrecognizeable, then it's kind of like.. what's the point, it misses a little of the spirit of the competition, in this case, the scream is heavily processed so that it has a different quality yet it's INSTANTLY recognizeable. IMO that is 100% hitting the ideal sweetspot of what SPCVIII sound design can do at it's bestIt's interesting how you were able to use the same drums I did, and get such a different sound out of them. I like how low and aquatic the synth is when it comes in, slowly surfacing. I audibly laughed aloud at the vocals coming in, hehe. This is good stuff, nice light easy listening goofy music. And then just when I thought it was a little too predictable, now we've got some dissonance in here! It's -- oh my god, the acid sound fits so well in here, with all the goofy arhythmatic sound it has. Aw, I would have liked this to be longer. I feel like you ran out of time on this! :p This sort of song is really fun to see in the SPC, because you can immediately recognize all the samples, and it's just so FUN to see the unique ways in which people play with them all, and pile effects on.HOUSE MUSIC
i love hearing my acid used though it shuffles A LOT here. you might couldve quantized it?
it still mostly works tho

idk what sounds are going on with that octave jumpy stuff but i like it.

this is like the junk food of the compo.

custom interior. pioneering allergy. protect animalsthe main theme is really proggy and cool. a lot jam-packed into one minute (and that's not bad for it/you)The contrast between the parts of this song Does It for me. The harsh chord stabs juxtaposed with the "blomp"s of mallet sounds... It's such a cool song. I also like the way the funky drummer sample is played up and down the keyboard creating rad micro rhythms all over the place <3BOSS BATTLE INCOMING!!!needs more timesig-driven syncopation. Makes me think of what if someone made Konami Krazy Racers with odd meter music haha. (guessing it's quilava/chimeratio in 11/16)Lots may be bad for me, but it's also bad when I don't get enough. I wish this song was longer, because it's fun and groovy. PLEASE give MOAR. Megamanish and I love it.Adoooore the atonality of this. And the way it shfits from breakbats to precice, strange polyrhythms. This is super my kind of music.Lots of what? Presumably anything... everything in moderation, as my grandfather used to say. Jesus this cracks me up...I like the chords and the use of the crystal leads. The rhythm and the intro riff is also pretty catchy as well. However, I feel that the transition into and from the saw wave riff is too rough and abrupt, making it a little hard to hear. Maybe that was your intent, but I prefer a smoother transition. It also helps if you can try to align the chords to match the key of the melody. At 0:32, it sounds like the crystal lead is playing in a different scale than the saw background chords.I liked how this started and the hook was pretty cool, but this was another song I wanted to mark higher if it were just longer and had more diversity. I thought the drum'n'bass with the chip sounds was a really cool idea though.this sounds more like I made it than my actual entry...needless to say that means it is to my TASTE so I will RANK IT HIGH. my guess is that this is cheechee or razerek somehow (NOT ANYMORE NOW THAT I KNOW THEY ARE NOT IN THE PARTICIPANT LIST). anyweays yeah transposing chord stabs and odd time and I love this sample choice it's extremely my thing !!!!!!! these harmonies are insane perfect to me at so maany parts, and the rhythmic ambiguity is perfect to me, i love inclarity of where the downbeat is at so many parts. {{{{{{Part 11: (BOSS 2: Jungle Ruins Security System) UH OH on your way back to the surface you're attacked by strange electrical bright glowing WIREFRAME SPHERES that seem intent on capturing any intruders. Luckily this boss isn't very hard, because it's actually impossible, and you're immediately captured and taken to another secret part of this labyrinthe dungeon...}frickin phenomenal stuff on display here from a compositional perspective. Reminds me very closely of some of my very favorite up and coming artists, this occupies enough of a cross section that I could think of several people who may have written this, all of whom I'm huuuuge fans of. I do wish of cousre this was more fully developed, as it is right now just comes off as a wip... a super tasty wip that I absolutely LOVE every second of, but a wip none the less. Special props for using what sounds like authentic 1channel chip echo technique on some of those obligato lines.Immediately a completely unkosher but completely graspable opening. I already can't wait to see how this theme develops. Or... now it's gone. And now it's back, and now we have something else? Feels to me like two completely different songs we have here, huh. I was looking forward to either of them going anywhere, but nothing really happened. That's a shame, I thought I was in for a banger when it began, but there's no development in a dynamic sense, a "let's bring in some cool harmony" sense, or anything, really. There's no thread that carries between either sort of section, either, and similar to how I felt to one of the songs earlier in the contest, if you took the two different sections out and played them to me without telling me where they were from, I wouldn't be able to tell they belonged to the same song. I can tell you were having fun here, but when I -- and I certainly am only speaking for myself here -- but when I come to music, I'm looking to close my eyes and let the music carry me away in my imagination. It's not the notation here that stops that from happening -- there's nothing wrong with that. It's just the fact that it never does anything with its ideas. I don't get a chance to think of much before the tone completely shifts.lololol look at me im chimeratio

yeah I keep getting inspired by chimeratio and cryptovolans, so i though I'd make a dumb pastiche of their music.
did i succeed? good enough, judging by the sync, lmao
[6:54 PM] Chimeratio: my thoughts are "this is either chimeratio or blitzlunar"
later I saw him wondering about the tune... yeah I'm having fun. sorry chim ;)

fun fact i wrote this super quickly (1h 20m) and submitted it and didnt listen again for like 2 months
so my reactions during the sync were very much "wtf did i even do"
but since that'd give away that I was the author, i instead said stuff like this
[6:54 PM] anosci: the bars seem weird its throwing me off lol

it was an honest reaction!

my only regret is the part with the bells, which has a dumb melody. w/e.

still fun

Cool time sigs, argument of the centurythe voice of the people. party permit. alpha transitions.HOLY CRAP WHAT A FUCKIN JOURNEYThis is the exact song I think of when I think SPC. this is a blank formatted diskette this is rock'n'rollGot a good groove going on in the first half, then it kinda got a little too creative for my tastes haha.funny tune. Esoteric potpourri. Best remix of Creative Prodikeys keyboard drummer dude! "asse droms" - wtf is going on at the 3minute mark, some kind of evil spirit took over! I'll certainly want to "smoke rock every day"Groovy Bassline, that's for sure. Interesting vocals.. Had some laughs in here, that's for sure. That THX.. Oh god.. I love the last section in this. The atonal chords here are so perfect. The way the song evolves like a prog rock suite is amazing, too. Love that.An unusual variety of tracks all crammed into one entry. VERY unusual, at that. This one deserves respect for being straight hilarious with samples, and the timing/rhythm wonk. Sounds like the guy is saying BUTT rather than FIGHT... ahh so good. And then "this is a blank diskette; this is rock & roll" which is hands down my favourite part. Also "smoke rock every day" ARE YOU SERIOUS asdfgkI like the use of vocals throughout the music but having them repeat one of the syllables for an extended amount of time can start to becoming annoying. Playing them loud and having it pan everywhere doesn't help either. I'm not sure what you were trying to accomplish at 2:45, 3:28, and 3:39, but the loud dissonant organ chords is quite unpleasing to hear.Props for using the creative labs sample! I like odd time signature stuff but I found this hard to count for some reason, it works though if I switch off. There's some nice creativity throughout but personally the progression of the song felt a bit random and not super cohesive. The section at 2:30 with the clavinet style was quite neat but it didn't last very long, the transition from here is another example to me of where the song loses me. A song full of good ideas but hard for me to connect to. The samples are used well, the scratch stuff at 5:15 was neat. I think I'd have scored higher if the song was a bit more focused.this song is so funy it makes me smile : ) It does many very CLEVER RHYTHM things and feels like it is shnabubula playing live in loopstation setup with snes samples. some very IGOR STRAVINSKY moments in this I love progressive "rock and roll". the 13 part is so hilarious how ridiculous BLUNT THE barline is and it makes me go like this *turns into a compact disk* {{{{{{Part 8: A town in the jungle. This place is actually pretty run down by the standards of this world. cobbled together buildings made out of scrap metal scatted throughout without any real system. Most people who live here have never left this place, they're still connected to all the modern conveniences and the internet and all that, but they're so isolated that their culture is a bit distinctly different from most of the rest of what you've seen of this world so far- much less formal, and they know how to have fun!!}Creative Labs dude was such a superstar in this compo, just have to say. Bass Drumzzzz. It took me a second but then I realized the title is a quote from ID4, which just happens to be one of the favorite films of my youth. Makes me question the plot of this song, there definitely gives an impression of an alien invasion part way through the track. A ton of really amazing elements in this, I'll highlight a few. Obviously I'm all about the odd meter groove, really cool also how when the original groove is reprised way later in the song, it's done with a fraction of the beat removed from each measure for even greater heightened irregularity. The whole alien invasion segment in the middle is totally masterful, both playfully comic use of the sounds but also fully immersive and eery. With Jimmy Carr laughing as the leader of the alien assault force. I can only assume goldblum and co were able to hold them off as they did in the film. Also, I love how the song simulates a heated debate between two pundits, intent on arguing whether "this" is truly rock and roll or just a blank diskette.Huh, classic sonic vibes! I hear that 7 beats :o
Not a criticism by any means, but as I've said before, this is the kind of song I have a hard time really grasping the form of. It actually sounds like several completely different songs in one. I can't find much of a relation or development between them. I'll probably have to return to it more in the future to really get a feel on it.
HOLD ON. 2:45 has my attention. What is this amazing soundscape? I LOVE it. It's so scary and droning!! Like some sort of alien mothership casting a shadow over the earth! This is beautiful dissonance. That could have been a song on its own. I like the last section a lot, too. It has a fun variety of rhythms which come together in cool ways. The record scratching makes me laugh, hehe
-
Coming back to this later, I still can't grasp anything to connect with over this song *as a whole*. If I can give a critique I really believe in about this song, it would be that you are making a lot of nice little segments, but you're failing to tie them together in a way that feels compelling, natural, or tells any kind of story. Believe me, I love some prog music, but prog music is music that changes and progresses, not music that just stops for something else entirely different to begin. Once again, I like most of the individual sections in this song, and I'd love to see them played with more, but the fact that few of them get a chance to develop kills the fun for me. I don't want this to come off as a "your song sucks" at all -- I just want to emphasize how I think everything you did here would be so much cooler if you could connect the dots between the individual sections more.
this mixing is whack

some of the arrangement is whack

its kinda the spirit of shitcore lol

if refined down to the more fun ideas, and given some better mixing, this would be a solid entry

but alas...

somehow i want to blame shnabubula for this.

Funky. Kind of all over the place. Ow @ 1:42. Aha, someone did do the "this is a blank formatted diskette" x "this is rock and roll" pairing. Okay. Yeah. They did it and did it and did it again, lol. Cool chords!utterly stylish. runway theme or custom car? touch me.nice use of the EP chords, a solid beat even though it could've used some more variation in the drumsThis is the first song I heard from the compo. It made me extremely excited for what was to come. I especially like that it uses the entire e-piano sample and then builds of that. Shows character!Great groove going on, just wish it had more chord changes/progression.downtempo menu music. I like. Could be more interesting as a song but I guess that's the nature of the style.Nice introduction. Love the chords and bass. Kinda wish I would hear a prominent melody, but it may go against the nature of the song. Would love a section that stands out more than the rest, but overall great use of what is here.Very well mixed, and a beautiful chord sequence that flows perfectly. This feels very complimentary to Jungle Downfunk, sharing a similar genre and pace, though this may be a tad moodier and jazzier. It's very catchy anyway! Would have enjoyed it being a little longer, maybe another section and/or a few more repeats/grooves, but good!Who says good music needs to sound intricate? I find this piece quite enjoyable to hear. If I had to give suggestions for improvement though, I would like it if you lower the volume of the main chords a little bit. I feel that at 0:50, there are some extra instruments playing that got drowned out by the chords. Additional variations like adding a melody on top of the chords can also help too. What happens when you only got $5.25 on you, you fucking swag walk your way like you got $500.25 and you keep that 25 cents for emergencies. The rhodes thing is great, the vibe of this song is smooth I love it. This is one of the songs where even though it's repetitive I feel like it's got just enough hook and style that it doesn't quite outstay its welcome. But I would've loved more and more variation, and less long fade out ending.nice and chill~! there's not much to say about it but it mixes things together in a nice way. thank you juice of the big city {{{{{{Part 21: the HUMOR shrine's ENCHANTED RELIC is strange. it's a floppy disk, but as soon as you touch it you're sucked into the INSIDE of it. you're trapped here until you can find a way out!!!!}really love the groove on this one. It's always neat when people include full portions of the drumloops verses just chopping them up into individual percussive samples and building a kit, definitely feels more true to the 'spirit' of SPC. While the harmonic pattern repeats over and over I don't mind at all cause it really hits the spot, especially the 4th chord in the sequence, has that delicious little bit of dissonance to give the cycle a real freshness that doesn't wear off. Super efficient use of texture. Just a really nice tight piece, I could easily loop this for a long time. Only MINOR downside being, I definitely wish it were longer and had more chance to develop, but for the 2 minutes that are there, I don't think I'd change a thing.Oooh! Funky! The drumbeat is industrial and oppressive, and the bassline relentless. We're already half done? It's solid, for what it is -- it could be a nice intermission track on an album of more complex pieces. I like the way the underlying chord progression never stays quite the same. ^^such a simple but infectious groove.
not much more to say really. it's well-constructed.

I'm ranking this lower than i want to because... wow tough competition.
but I'm hoping others rank it higher.

Author offers up his darkest and baddest effort. For some reason, I find this piece to be too repetitive. The bass is also quite loud which is quite noticeable at 0:17 when the melody plays. The melody gets drowned out by the bass leads. I want to at least give credit for ensuring the tempo and timing of the track is correct. Are you ready...to commit...a sin? Love the use of the flutes gliding softly over the hard beat.No comment. This is a very author song but it also sounds like coda, which makes for a very unusual atmosphere indeed haha.Overall, I enjoy the top-down beat for this piece. The melody selected is decent as well. If I had to list an improvement, I would try to separate the bass line and the background chords a little more as blending them makes the bass feel too thick to listen to. It can also be hard to hear the individual bass notes. Maybe you can try raising the background chords by an octave so that it can cover the midrange? The groove is tight from the get go, 0:24 I can't really think of the words to describe the rhythm here and what's going on...and especially at 0:36 too, but I really like it. 0:47 oh yeah! a robust maze. agriculture and cola drinks. criminal anthemthis is clearly by the same person as the 3 others I called "super loud and in your face"Another one for the super atmospheric SPC rpg...!!I really like the mallet bass, it adds a really cool creepiness to it, kind of like when first entering Maridia in Super Metroid. I didn't even need to listen to the song to know it's a Kris Troutman original.mmm I like the tense melody here. Feel like this could be kris troutman based on the melody and song title. My own song. What can I say. This is a tradition where I continue this song series in every single SPC since I joined. This is the latest song of this series.Very cool, love the unconventional melodies and the drums are very pleasing to the ear, very varied sonically and compositionally, so to speak. Very interesting song structure, a lot of subtle changes in rhythm and melody that work very well together. No comment.Of course the AUTHOR had to carry on his legacy :p PRIME INDEED.I wonder if this is supposed to be from Metroid (Heard of it, but never played it). The drums and the background ambient sounds are decent and emphasize the mood of the music. The bass is also adequate as well. One problem I feel is that this piece sounds a little repetitive despite some variations in the drums and chords. The percussion in the start is great, the atmosphere is nice and gloomy too. Another song I feel like could be in an old JRPG game and I'd be really into the style. 0:55 but wait, the intensity kicks up a notch! 1:40 comes down a bit and this new synth is done nicely, the drums in the background are cool as well, I like that fast trill of one of the percussive notes too. Another song that just kind of ends too! I think a bit more variety and this is one I'd mark a bit higher too. Great job though!I love "KRIS TROUTMAN MUSIC" so much\_ nothing sounds even close to like what this is. {{{{{{Part 35: (Dungeon 7: Descent Part 3) a massive, incredibly tall floating structure composed of pieces of 'ancient' (80s-2010s) buildings and filled with machines derived from technology of that era. this is the largest and most complex set of ruins yet. The percussion timbre on this track creates a really nice fulcrum effect in the groove that highlights some of the more fun rhythm elements in a few section. Is this song related to Medium Zero? sounds like troutman anyway...

What is there to say about this one? It's another Troutman piece. Ooh, is that SampleS1 in reverse around 0:50? Okay, I appreciate that. :D Pretty memorable track. Seems liek the note tails are cut off at the end, though.

two-door twin turbo hearse. beauty from space.not so hot on this one... the mix is kinda muddy, nothing pushes through enough over that Big Low Synth, and the higher note of the melody is just uncomfortably out of tune for how static the melodic line isThis song brings the funeral atmosphere... no wait..!! this is praise!!Great atmospheric song! Totally nailed that nebula/space vibe. This is Charyb?spacey theme indeed. Not my sort of music but you've definitely made ample use of A440 here. So, you are going to take me through the cosmos. I hope it's a good journey. Makes me think of Dracula meets Metroid Prime. Once we get to 1:30 its very nice and full and I love it. Also gives me a slight FF7 vibe.Really makes me visualise a scene. Love the ambiety, percussive background underlining the melody. Is this the most ambient entry? It reminds me of some of the backings to songs by Muse or Radiohead. My inner progmonster is dying for more things to happen, I would have enjoy a few more layers or more intrigue generally, but not bad, not bad!Very peaceful and quiet piece to listen to. I like how the music sounds at the beginning with that deep space travel feeling though it can be turned down as it becomes too loud and covers over some of the other instruments as they begin to play at 0:22. The melody at 1:19 can also be turned down too. I would like to hear the background voices that play at this portion of the music. This one I was really unsure of at first, but after some time I was slowly mesmerized. It's not a song you expect everyone to start cheering but one everyone starts having a shared experience with. 1:20 this is so good, the LFO of the bass snyth with that very plain organ sound with a simple vibrato is really damn captivating. Time passes quickly with this one and I could've easily done with more to it, see where it went next. It feels like before the last section it could do with another section. Cool ending though to, nice down pitch.I HATE these chord changes they're exactly the ones I don't like, made even worse for me by how long and drawn out it is ::(( SORRY. at least it is DARK and I like dark, some cool sound choices and the atmosphere is pretty neat and i'd like it a lot if the notes playing were ones i liked, but I have a very specific aversion to the things this does so this winds up last...but it speaks to the quality of music in this contest that I still have at least some positive things to say about this!!!! {{{{{{Part 34: (Dungeon 7: Descent Part 2) lava pours from various holes in the sky into...space? except there's actually linear gravity going downwards unlike some previous dungeons we've seen. floating metallic platforms connected by chains provide most of the paths here. various relics of architecture and technology from the 1980s-2010s can be seen everywhere. one VERY LARGE structure stands out there, and that's your goal to head to}MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD. The level of mood on this is palpable. Definitely the type of joint that makes you bust out your lighter at a live concert. It's not the most fully layered or developed song, but that mood still hits like a ton of bricks. It was a really great moment in the listening party when we could all just sit their and vibe out for a bit, after being punched in the face so often by a lot of the other tracks. There are a also a lot of great little sonic textural moments throughout. Some really cool processing choices. Also really apreciate the final bend off.Oh, that's a lonely feeling... the drone of a lone spacecraft, far from home, radio silence as interference drown out communication with the rest of the universe. A very sad song. I expected it to take a slightly hopeful turn, but it never does. But that's okay!this is like bgm for a cinematic. opening view of the castle that's been taken by the enemies, desecrated etc.
on my preliminary listen-through (so far), i'm ranking this next to "Sin" in quality.
they both have a dark theme too, but "Sin" is more energetic / fighty, vs this song's somber about-to-storm vibe.

after listening to all the entries a few times, that placement stuck.

I feel like adding more comments here but i dont know what to say other than this really plants an image of overcast skies and an overgrown terrace into my head lol

Nice sounds, good structure and melody. Haven't heard phasing used straight up like this in a while (I think that's what I'm hearing anyway). Ends a little early, but I guess if it went on too much longer it'd go on too long. I noticed some dissonance in the low end in a few places that detracts more than I think it adds. Solid track.

artful. oppressive. will you hurt me? the mountain king's judgementanother super loud and in your face track, good use of dinosaur tho0:39 onwards this song is a delight. Very nonsensical.Intense intro. Another Kris Troutman orignal?shares the same intro as "Sin". seems to be the best mixed out of all the entries. (hi kris)This song had one rule. I had to use the Dinosaur sample. The rest was fair game.I get a cool Grant Kirkhope vibe from this. Love the way it progressess, has a 70s prog sort of sound to it.Big bad boss and its annoying sidekick/offspring are incredibly, righteously angry and berating the protagonist about how he will be crushed. This is not my type of music but it sounds decent overall. The bass and drums are adequate and melody is pretty good. I'm not sure what type of music you're aiming for, but I feel one starting place that could be improved upon is reducing the heavy bass that's overshadowing the melody instruments. The start is excellent, one of the more interesting begginings in the contest. Love the dark vibe, is that dinosaur guitar in the background? The beat at 0:38 is sweet, and at 0:48 how it comes together here is pulling me in. The melody at 1:10 I think reminded me of something like FF6 at the listening party. Yeah this song has some pretty creative moments, but unfortunately ends a bit adrupt. I think personally I'd enjoy the song if it had more sections like at 0:40. The dinosaur sample is a sort of muddy thing to have filling the background so much. But yeah this was a cool song for sure.some more "Kris Troutman" right here. I really REALLY love the tonality of this a ton a ton. I think it's rhythmically really mechanical feeling in a way i'm not fond of though and that's the only reason it's not higher but I'm hugely fond of every other aspect. Some of the chord changes in this made me out loud go "EEEEE" because they felt so cool and tense and I LOVE THE Feeling of music tghat sounds likej thisrth iths {{{{{{Part 14: (BOSS 3: Jungle Ruins Security System 2) despite the strange friendliness of this part of the dungeon compared to the previous, when the security system HERE is significantly more violent and is intent not only on capturing you, but destroying you. Just want to reiterate, everytime I state this, I mean it as a compliment in the highest order. This one very much has the feel of being from the OST of some amazing but overlooked action rpg from the PSX era, definitely a dungeon involving some sort of psuedo platforming mechanic that was shoehorned in the 2.5D engine and doens't QUITE work but is still neat conceptually. Given that, this song manages to give me a feeling of nostalgia while not actually being from the past. Always an cool thing when an artist can pull that off!I didn't even need to listen to guess who made this, the name alone made me suspicious hehe
I like the mischeviousness at 0:37! It's really a very chromatic style song, isn't it? I find it really hard for my little music brain to grasp the power of. I'm not very familiar with music like this! It's hard for me to properly judge something too nonconventional in the tonal sense. I like the Yoshi's Island vibes I get from some parts!
so much low end!

somehow it doesnt negatively affect the mix. mysterious.

very strange sample choice, what with the vocal loop chords. im not even sure what that is.
i dig it tho.

my favorite part is the bit that starts at like 1:50. especially towards the end when you're jumping octaves

That is beautiful, those harmonic changes in that whole part.Funny shit. Song in the genre of angry boss fight. I like how the bass sounds like it's going "bababububababubu" etc... just hilarious to be honest. The melodies are completely whacked out.Go Fight! Although this music isn't really my taste, I like the use of vocals in this chords. The tempo variation is decent as well. What could help make this a better piece is if the bass is a little deeper, giving that thumping effect which helps emphasize the feeling that this is fighting music.Shit man I'm fucking gonna fight Barney. This one is nice and nuts. 0:20 haha yes that section is neat. 0:45 fucking great use of the shaku sample here. Things get a bit repetitive from here but apart from that it's really well done. This one doesn't end quite as abruptly but I'd love a bit more variation in this song. Still really cool.I LOVe "probably kris troutman(jake kaufman) style" but I think something about the way this presents itself is TO FUNNy for me to really rate it as high as I want. If I'm wrong about this I'll be completely shocked and of course willing to eat my words, but with this song, and at least 4 other entires, the power and absolute unmistakeable character of the author makes it so that the name "Kris Troutman" might as well have been included in the file tags. I don't even fully understand how the man is able to acheive this, seemingly irregardless of the soundset he's working with, but it really is quite an impressive accomplishment. Speaking more specifically about this track, I love how the vocal "fight" sample is used and incorporated into a fully immersive plot, both using the title and just the overall songwriting here, I can picture an underground fight club of giant fluffy dinosaurs, engaged in the brutalist of combat in a basement somewhere.SDJFGHSJDKGFHSKDJGF THIS IS NOT DISAPPOINTING

I hardly expected a funny entry from Kris, and that threw me off with laughter in the beginning, haha! This is a good meme song, but it also has a lot of neat little rhythms here and there. I especially like 1:56. It has a kirby boss sort of feel, exciting and bouncy while still intimidating and imperial.
I can't believe you missed your chance to use the dinosaur sample...

"Fi-fi-fi-FIGHT!" Feels like another Troutman expedition. Pretty good! The guy has a style, and it's a solid style. Solid structure, melody, chords, percussion, etc. A little loud, and I feel like the track may cut off too early. Starting to wonder if that's a problem with VLC, seeing as that's something I'm noticing about a lot of tracks. Maybe everyone just wanted to jam sound all the way up to the last sample in their tracks?

tear jerker. at the highest point of the earthI wasn't super down with things being left out-of-tune, the detune aesthetic would've worked if it were a little more measured and focused though I think to match with the chill atmosphere of the tune. that said I do like the main idea of this song!this song is so chill yet uses a bunch of really abrasive sounds in the middle of it. also a bunch of major and minor chords stacked on top of eachother.... this song is Some Stuff, manVery relaxing with ample use of shakuhachi haha.not a fan of the melody of this but it's got some interesting use out of the samples.Interesting use of vocals here. Sounds like I am in a washing machine that is on a vision quest. I wish the song went more places, but overall it is nice stuff. No comment. Thanks for describing the state of my arteries :( quite a pleasant song/atmosphere if not the most showy this time around. The piece is OK to listen though I don't really like the repetitive nature of the music. Also, the fast chords throughout the music are difficult to listen to with its abrupt silence. It's weird that "Your Neighbors At Geocities" has a similar progression to this, wonder if it's the same person...however I find the downtempo of this to be pretty damn chill. The progression from the start up until the flute section is strangely addictive, the transition at 0:41 to the flute section is a bit jarring but there's a progression here within the first few bars of each phrase I quite like. I think it's just the repetitive use of sections and simpler use of the samples that left me from marking it higher up. But I do really find this one fun to listen to.this has an ultra cool atmosphere. all the reversed sounds and that drum loop panned to one speaker and everything about it is just so slighntly OFF from what the world is soupposed to be (According to the neon lemur who keeps invading the tree forest that's MY one of them any ways...)....it's cool~! some neat interesting odd chord changes i dig too : ) {{{{{{Part 26: (Dungeon 6: VOID Ruins) The Aplomb Pudding void has more in it than just portals, there's a mysterious region of floating RELICS OF THE PAST. Despite the very simple implementation of it, this may be my favorite use of the shakuhachi sample, just cause of how nicely the vibrato works out at the higher octave. Similarly the scream vocals become a very pleasing and colorful texture, not at all grating, as you'd assume they'd have to be. The somewhat sparse layering in general and lack of too much development might temper my enjoyment of this piece a bit. It feels somewhat bare bones, so wish it might have been fleshed out slightly, though I really do like a lot of elements of the song writing, it's also the kind of thing that, especially the bridge segment with the shakuhachi melody, feels like it'd be a lot of fun to jam on with the keyboard. The use of the Kirasawa vocals in the last section is really really nice when they're layered in harmony. So many of these tidbits I'd love to have seen really expanded upon rather than just being fleeting moments.*Ponders the fact that I don't have dental insurance*
I really admire all the use you're getting out of reversed samples you have in here. The sample usage is good, and there's a lot of fine rhythms here and there, but I'm failing to catch any sort of real musical progression in here, whether recurring or developing. It feels like it wanders aimlessly. I'm surprised how well the screech lead functions for what you use it here as! It sounds really great! I kinda wanted to hear more of it.
this is a weird one.

kinda silly in an avant way?

yeah idk man.

i like the textures you have here. this is a fairly nice entry overall but its victim to insane competition...
This track has a plodding sort of rhythm. I like the section around 0:41 with the melody and chords and stuff. The screech sample riff is nice too. The chords and melody and screech riff comes back later, and is developed further. I like that. Slow build-down (opposite of build-up?), nice. Ending is abrupt though.

Songs like these in some ways, display to the fullest extent the pure FUN AND CREATIVE party-time aspect of SPC and I just find it completely delightful. This reminds me so much of MaliceX's previous jokey entry, but the man swore he did not enter this year, and I will choose to believe him. I find it highly amusing the way the song seems to gradually cycle through samples, almost in a race to use as many of them as humanly possible in the smallest amount of time. While some may view this as a weakness, the way it's done so unapologetically, in my book, is only just another strength of the track that adds to the fun. My score is slightly lowered by the fact that, if I look at this objectively as a piece of music to be enjoyed, some of this novelty and fun does start to wear off. But if I take long enough breaks between listens, I know I can always come back and expect to get a smile out of it.Finally back, he's DINOSAURRRRRR
Okay, you were having too much fun with these samples, weren't you? I like the meme-tier usage of using just the first split second of some samples and then cutting them out, hehe.
Silly, and made me smile, but this isn't the sort of thing I'll be returning to listen to much in the future, unless I get nostalgic for the goofy nonsense these contests bring about sometimes. :p

Props for using most (all?) samples. Hard to follow. This track is the one that made me recognize the "huehuehue" as being from Sonic CD, after it was revealed that was the source, about 1:02ish. The track is a bit cacophonous but it makes its own sort of sense.

hi KATTYWAMPUSsophisticated and yearning. multi-level shopping. lonelycool combination of two of the longer samples in the packThis feels a bit like an intro to something amazing and then kind of doesn't get thereThe dialup incorporation with the drumbeat was smart. Definitely brings back 90s nostalgia.interesting use of the guitar chords and drum samples in vanilla sample fashion.Intersting stuff indeed, but sometimes the spaces of silent are a bit much, but I get the idea behind it. Wish this did more, but what you have are solid ideas.I love how the jagged drum loop, with its internet dial tone bits, complements the airy and fluid Holdsworth sample. And then how the hard bass bridges those two flavours together, too.Something's gone M.I.A, like most of Geocities.I don't wanna say too much about this one because I know the author subbed it at the very last minute and was very rushed, and surely did less than they wanted to. Worth it for the song title alone though! :)The rapid succession of the music being cut made this piece very hard to listen to. It certainly helps that the drums are not muted in the same way as the melody line. Also, the overall music sounds very repetitive with not much variations. Perhaps adding another melody line or more accompaniments or extending the number of bars for the melody helps. This was a fairly short track with not much editing of the samples, and the second half of the song seemed incomplete. The start of the song however is a pleasant idea and uplifting, the bass makes a good addition but seems to clash with notes when it plays with the two notes played at the end of phrase of the 4th bars. I liked where it was going but compared to the other tracks I felt I couldn't score this as much as I'd like to.this one does not really make me feel anything but I like the way it cuts the allan holdsworth sample on and off the way it does very COOL {{{{{{Part 7: Those ruins led to...an entire room filled with ancient computers? a shrine to preserving the very specific decade of the 1990s, why would this have been built? well at the very least you have more of the enchanted relics you were looking for to collect here}Very barebones but for what's there, there's certinaly nothing I found particularly off putting. I would guess this one as being Sid's pretty certainly, but maybe I've overlooked something. Some really fun use of the modem sound in the last portion, and also enjoy the use of the final polytonal chord from the allan holdsworth set.I miss those neighbors... I was hoping for something a little world of goo-like here. There's not much to this song, though. Feels like it wasn't completed. Especially the rhythm at the end! So much could have been built around a clever rhythm like that!i swear i hear the beep sfx from half-life 2 / gmod being used in the beat here. i have no idea what it actually is. dialup?
im not much a fan of this tune, but the beat is solid enough. especially the dialup beat at the end.
it might've been better to focus on that and throw holdsworth out.
this is the lowest ranking entry that feels like an honest effort. "Low Bar" was designed to sound like a newbie but this one FEELS like it.
Maybe it isn't though? Hearing this song makes me want to give encouragement lol.

You've got a grasp on how to make coherent music, my dude! You just need to experiment and branch out!
If it really is from someone that's new to making music, I'm hoping they don't feel discouraged by the low score I gave here.
We all gotta start somewhere!
Not bad. Seems to be largely based on the chord progression of the "holdsworth1" sample. I have no room to criticise for building a track around a single sample, so I won't. Feels unfinished, and kind of fizzles out. I'd like to hear this developed a bit more.

Kinda sounds like a secret song from Earthbound towards the end.interesting use of dial up modem sound. (guessing this is Sid)I dunno why but this seems familiar. Nice ideas, but I keep wanting more stuff to come in, and it never does.Love how calm this is, and yet how interesting the transitions from atonal dialup tone to the melody. Creates a very interesting harmonic contrast. I personally love this type of track, the minimalism of it and the strangeness of the harmonic content with the internet sounds (repeating myself).Strangely basic.Well, I suppose I did have to score one song the lowest... author makes it plain that it was expected, thus letting me off the hook! Phew. Despite that it did make me laugh... chicken melody + angry dialups. While I see how this music fits the title, I find some problems with this piece. The drum sequences don't line up well with the melody notes notably the snare rolls. Also, it would be great if you gave the music more variations such as another melodic instrument or a completely different drum pattern. Extending the number of bars for the melody helps too. The modem sound effect is nice but feels inadequate.Another short one but I just loved the vibe of this. It's cute and quirky, makes me think of something like Earthbound. It's so minimal but the idea is solid. The dial up is fucking nice too haha, that's used great. If only it were longer and did more I'd really want to score higher. Despite clearly being done either with limit time, or maybe by somebody not very comfortable with the tools they were using, and therefor constrained by technical difficulties. The little bit that is actually here has quite a few cool things to it. Building the whole thing around a motif that is essentially off beat stabs, automatically gives the song a real sense of personality, despite being so minimal in terms of actual note content. Also, the use of the modem sound as this ambient echo atmosphere pad is really neat, would have loved to see that developed more for sure!Hmm, what's up with this now? I'm not sure if this is a joke entry, or someone just messing around. I hardly want to write any true critiques on a song like this, until I know whether it's actually appreciated, or if it'd be a waste of my time since it was a joke. :p
I do like the nice way the modem sound is used to create a nice bubbly sounding pad, though! It's a redeeming quality in what is otherwise a song that doesn't have much of a melody, and the melody there is uses all the wrong samples for the wrong spots

"bad music" is always so subjective

as much as I'd like to pin this on shnabubula i actually have no idea who wrote it
I whipped this track up in probably under an hour on the day submissions were due. My reasons for making and submitting this track were as follows: 1) I had really hoped I'd manage to submit more than one track. This sort of checked that box. 2) I wanted to enter something not at all serious, because I spent so much time and energy working within the constraints of "Aplomb Pudding". This entry was a way to help reframe my participation in this contest as not serious. Also, if "Aplomb Pudding", which I put a lot of effort into, ended up putting everyone off, at least this track should keep it from actually placing last. :P 3) With this entry submitted, I could encourage the stragglers to submit whatever they have because there's bound to be something worse. I don't think I ended up actually telling anyone that, but by submitting this, I had that option. 4) I hold the distinction of at least one of my entries placing last in every Sample Pack Contest I have entered. Not exactly something to be proud of, but not something I care to give up, either. This submission aims to maintain that distinction, while not submitting totally unlistenable crap.
