The only way I could get it to work is to run in windowed mode. I found that 1024x768 res was the closest to tolerable at 1080p. During gameplay, for some reason I could enter fullscreen windowed and the game viewport would compensate. It is possible to use a borderless fullscreen utility but I chose not to. It is also possible to configure the game for widescreen and custom resolutions. Windowed mode can be enabled by running the exe in the cmd line with "fullscreen=false", or by creating a shortcut with the same command. The steam version also has this issue so their is no other known fix.
