30Robert A. AyresAnecdoteAnguilidaeAnguillarostrata1This excerpt was sent via email from Bob Ayer's and appears to be taken from his book (unknown if published): Eel Account (Anguilla rostrata) for Shield Ranch by Robert A. Ayres; June 12, 2009; "Though I grew up fishing on Barton Creek, I have only ever seen one eel in Barton Creek. I caught the eel in the summer (probably in the month of June) of either1974, 1975, or 1976. I was fishing by myself in the evening with a rod and reel at the family swimming hole, a deep pool that very rarely goes dry and that is located just below the family ranch house on the Shield Ranch. As best I can remember, the eel was approximately 2’ long. I landed the eel on the big rock at the edge of the pool. I remember being quite astonished, as I didn’t know there were eels in Barton Creek, or even that there were fresh water eels. Horace Eckols, our long-time foreman on the ranch, did not seem surprised by my catch."ColoradoTexasUSATravisBarton Creek, deep pool just below family ranch house on Shield Ranch30.267842-97.99390430.267842 -97.993904200WGS84Summer, 1974, 1975, or 197619746301976831n/a

40AnecdoteAcipenseridaeScaphirhynchusplatorynchusunknownObservation taken from email correspondence from David Riskin (TPWD) to Gary Garrett in response ot questions about sturgeon in the Rio Grande. David says: Seems to me I recounted this oral history to you in an e-mail with attribution and a drawing. I do NOT have that file any longer .... But, yes. I spoke with several elders who remembered netting the fishe in the Rio Grande in the EP/PN area. I do not recall dates or names any longer. Moreover, and sadly, everyone I knew who could assist in channeling these sources, now also are deceased. Thus we have a proto-gray category and you’ll just have to enter an anecdotal account based on my recollection of an account I forwarded to you some 2???. Oh my, decades hence? PS-- since there was presidio and mission at the Presidio del Norte, Guerrero, Coahuila, and since there are archives now at San Antonio, it is possible there may be accounts contained therein. I am certain that the San Antonio Missions NHP have an archivist. It may be worth a long shot. Sampling was conducted on March 10, 2005. The edges of each pool were sampled in an upstream fashion. The boat was maneuvered slowly and methodically ensuring
adequate coverage of each instream cover type such as trees, brush, and rocks. The deeper sections of the impoundments were sampled along transects, run shoreline to shoreline across the pool and spaced approximately 20 meters apart. A few seine transects were conducted in the free-flowing river below the Jordan Dam. Fish were retained for identification and photo documentation, then released. The survey resulted in the documentation of three new species of fish in the park: orangespotted sunfish, river carpsucker, and Texas shiner. Several brook silversides were collected and positively identified; these fish are west of their known range. Other species of interest were Guadalupe bass (the state fish of Texas) and Texas logperch, both of which are in-
dicative of high water quality.

Using a backpack unit with two netters and a bucket person. This followed a basic habitat assessment, water quality sampling, and was followed by invert sampling. The eels did not exhibit taxis, but they were irritated enough to flush out when the field touched them and were either netted or swam downstream directly into the nets. Exact shocker settings varied on the streams as conductivity varied wildly (500 to 2000). The eels we captured all seemed to be in shallower water associated with structure, but honestly if there were individuals in deep pools I doubt we would have seen them or netted them so this could be a collection method bias. It could have been the right day for a migration. I’ve sampled Mission River and Garcitas Creek sites several times now and have never observed eel, but previous sampling times were in the Summer or Fall.

I headed down to the Lake Livingston spillway on Friday morning to try my luck with the stripers and catfish since they were releasing a good amount of water. After setting out my big poles, I decided to use my light spinning reel to catch some whites and stripers. I threw a chrome Rattle Trap and to my suprise, on the 2nd cast hooked into a monster fish. I fought the "striper" for around 25 minutes until it tired out. As soon as the fish surfaced, I quickly figured out that I had snagged a BIG paddlefish. With the girth and length, I estimated it to weight between 40 and 50lbs. Since the paddlefish is a threatened species, I quickly released the monster back into the depths to fight another day. It will definately top one of the hardest fighting fish I have ever caught on 8lb. test line.

Two American eels were collected in the dewatered area, one of which we kept and donated to the Cameron Park Zoo in Waco, TX, the other was released unharmed into the Lampasas River downstream of the water bladder used to block off the river for dewatering.'

No response as of the time of this data entry. Quoted text from Rob Sadowski's e-mail: " A fisherman called and reported this eel that he caught this in the Neches river this morning below lake palestine. Reported that it was 31" long. How common are they and does our department have any interest in this specimen? The fisherman is currently keeping it alive for as long as he can."

Length estimates was 3–4 inches and extremely slender. They flashed shiny silver and scattered away from the anode every time we hit the power button. None seemed stunned as most of our target species were (bass, crappie, bluegill). Our nets mesh size (½ inch) was much too large to capture them.

This copied from e-mail sent to AEC on May 5, 2017 from Bill Montgomery: It was many years ago - probably between 1979 and 1982 at Redbud Isle, just below the bridge there. I was on the bank fishing and a guy was on the water in a boat checking a trotline about 50 feet away. He obviously had a fish of some sort on and when he pulled it up, much to his surprise and mine, it turned out to be a large eel. It looked to be at least three feet long, maybe bigger. I got a good enough look at it to know it couldn’t have been anything else. I don’t remember if he kept it or let it go.

Anecdote (no photo)Anguilla rostrata1unknown
Observation reported by Max Shpak on Feb 2018. He verbally reported an observation he heard about from a friend of his who caught an eel in Ladybird Lake. I asked that he follow up with details after speaking to his friend, but little available at the moment. Observation was approximately 4 years ago.

Anecdote (no photo)American Eel25
self, from the number of individuals above over ~40 years
I have an old photo (pre computer/digital camera). They were mostly fairly large, very slimy, hard to take a hook out of. Distinct from the amphibian Siren etc,
colorado riverTexastravis & Bastrop1978-1987
most often caught on hook and line below Longhorn Dam, Austin when we most frequently fished there for the White Bass and shad spring run...This was about the time Striped Bass were just getting established. This was a long time back. I recall that I foul hooked one and a friend foul hooked another. We always released them as they were just too slimy.
no
Self, if I can still find an old print photo from the time.
n/a
Only caught them in the winter. Have seen Great Blue Herons swallow really big ones whole both times at Webberville and most recently perhaps two years ago.

From email: My husband and I saw a strange fish thrown on the bank by a fisherman yesterday evening at MRNA. We think it was an American eel? It was still alive when we found it, but it had swallowed a hook, so we eventually had to kill it. According to a fisheries biologist that works with my husband at the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, they are very rare in the Medina River; in fact, he said he has never heard of one in the Medina River and only personally seen one in Texas. He said they have become increasingly rare in all Texas rivers due to damns and other obstacles. I’m going to ask someone at the San Antonio River Authority if they have ever found them in fish surveys at the Medina River, but thought I would ask all of you as well. I have attached pictures.

Observer notes: It was during the night of Saturday March 17th. We ran the lines Sunday morning and it was on.
Lacy Harriseel_LacyHarris
From Lacy: We caught an eel on a limb line while fishing for catfish on the Colorado river near Altair this past weekend. We returned it to the water, we had no clue what to do with it. I would classify it as a yellow eel per your sheet. There was also a small catfish on the same line on top. the eel was on the bottom hook.
