Finding a rental that was within budget and a reasonable distance from work, friends, and restaurants/nightlife. Rent skyrockets during season, so you're out of luck if your lease runs out in those months.Very hard, especially when you can't negotiate rent. Landlords are wary of young professionals. Expensive. The only affordable housing options are either in not so desirable locations/neighborhoods or the properties are rundown.

Out of Sarasota county Lower prices, nicer larger homes Over pricedImpossible for young self employed residents to purchase a home. None of the banks are loaning without large down payments. We are forced to rent extremely over priced homes in areas that show no economic future for our children. Sarasota schools look great on paper and are disaster in person. I don't want my sons carreer to be an Aldi's cashier! Think of the middle class, and the future of our kids.

It wasn't easy. For the majority of SRQ residents looking for affordable housing, it will be ten times harder than it was for me. I am lucky and have a decent job; most workers in SRQ are not so lucky. This was my first and only chance of house ownership as prices kept climbing and inventories kept shrinking. My window was closing rapidly. Again, I am lucky - at least I had a window.

Many places advertised online were for south Sarasota, which is too far from my job. The traffic on US-41 is horrendous, so I needed to rent somewhere close to my job or risk sitting in bad traffic every day.Very, very difficult. Many places are not listed online, and you have to find out about them through word of mouth/social connections.A website that people can post housing ads on that allows renters to narrow down their search queries to specific Sarasota neighborhoods. It is hard to dredge through all of the Craigslist ads which includes listings from places like North Port and Venice which are super far from Sarasota. The Sarasota/Manatee housing market is horrible. In Sarasota, the job opportunities are few and affordable housing is hard to come by. Unless you want to live in a gross house with several roommates and making minimum wage, I would recommend against moving to Sarasota.

They try to say its market value, and i know that's not true, because I've looked it up on HUD...but we have no choice. Took what we could who accepted our dog. The housing stock in more affordable areas is homogeneous and requires too much reliance on cars.It was not difficult once I managed my expectations. Some source with authority needs to define both attainable and affordable housing, then put a binding framework in place for applicable projects. Currently these are just buzz words with no structure in place to control access in perpetuity, so each developer seeking to provide attainable or affordable housing has to write his own rule book.It is over-hyped with too much focus on the lack of affordability in downtown Sarasota and new developments. There are plenty of viable neighborhoods radiating out from downtown.

We were able to buy when it was more affordable. It would be impossible to curtail growth and sprawl in order to keep the desirability of the area, while at the same time lowering housing costs. It's economics - you can't lower supply and increase the demand without raising the prices. There has to be some element of building and development to meet the demand. That means increasing the allowable building density and / or developing more currently "rural" areas.
It's harder now than when I moved here in 1989. I bought a "starter" home in 1991 for less than $100,000 when the starting salary for my position was $35,000. Today, starting salary at my employer is around $42,000. The house I bought in '91 (for < $100,000) was sold for $265,000 about one year ago (Gulf Gate East, Sarasota). Housing prices have gone up dramatically in the last 27 years, wages have not.

I DO NOT want my hard earned tax dollars to subsidize a bunch of whiners complaining about how expensive everything. I think it's some kind of racket because in that time the list has been closed or when it is open, it has only been to be in a raffle to get on the wait list. Yet I know people who have applied and received housing in less time. Who do they know??? I have Stage 4 Cancer, diagnosed while I was living in a tent for a year after losing my home. I was laid off November1, 2008, at 61 y.o. I lost everything.
And it's not just me, I have tried to help ppl in worse situations on disability find non-existent housing. Their housing should be condemned but then they'd be homeless. Any effort to build affordable housing is blocked in this area. Shame.

It was a perfect time to buy and I'm very thankful for how it turned out. Now that the market is back up, it is definitely more difficult to purchase a property in or around the city. I think the best way I could describe our housing situation is: Sarasota (and Manatee) lacks diversity in its housing market. Our core developers focus on single family homes in suburban communities and high-end condos that will provide the highest rate of return for their investment. Most apartments that have been constructed have been condominiumized within a certain number of years. None of the new buildings constructed downtown offer the small, studio apartment option that will sell to our young professional community. I guess my one comment against this push for affordable housing would be: in what major city in the united states is housing actually affordable to young professionals in their early 20's and 30's? Sarasota / Manatee has great options for attainable housing, but the properties aren't located Downtown or on the Bayfront. I think that to say we deserve housing in those areas might be slightly unreasonable.

I would be interested to see if a smaller group of YP's could sit down and define what we think we need as a group and consult with someone with a development background to determine if we have reasonable / unreasonable expectations. If it can be accomplished financially today with the way the city is designed and zoned.
