Gammie, IanBratschentanzCorda Musiccordamusic.co.uk5432.542'4-5 violas with optional bass and/or guitar parts. This work can be performed in many combinations: as a viola quartet, adding cello or bass, with violin instead of viola 1, or doubled on each part. "The style of perforamce should be somewhere between a Mariachi band and a Biergarten orchestra." All of the parts are mostly in rhythmic unison making this a great piece for a multi-level ensemble.kjl (ILL)

Purcell, HenryWhen I am Laid in Earth (Dido's Lament)Christine DueFountain Park Music Publishing32.52222'50"Melody in vla 1 and 2; passacaglia motive passed around all of the parts. A good piece for developing beautiful sound, bow changes and vibrato. Vla 1 has extended sections of treble clef. All parts work with descending chromatic movement and should be comfortable with all of the finger patterns in 1st position.kjl

Tchaikovsky, AlexanderMournful Pavane for 5 Violas
(Traurige Pavane für 5 Violen)
Sikorski 2339www.sikorski.de5.55544Slow texture changes. Extended passage of artificial harmonics in vla 1 along with extended 5th+ position passages. Requires great bow control and ability to make phrases over long sustained notes. kjl-ILL

Warlock, PeterPavane from Capriol SuiteRobert StoskopfFountain Park Music PUblishing2.51.51.51.51.52'15"Use of low and regular first and second finger. Vla 1 goes into 3rd position and has harmonics at the end and there are some double stops (3rds and 5ts) that could be tricky for young players. You could double each part if performing with studetns in their 2nd-3rd year of study. The rhythm is very straightforward: all quarter notes, half notes and eighth notes (with ties but no slurs) in duple meter.
