Academically and Intellectually GiftedAIAcademically and Intellectually Gifted students perform at substantially high levels of accomplishment in both aptitude and academic achievement when compared with others of their age, experience, or environment. Academically and Intellectually Gifted students exhibit high performance capability in intellectual areas and academic fields. On average, their performance is at the 95%ile on state and nationally normed assessments.

Any gifted student, regardless of the area of giftedness, requires differentiated educational services beyond those ordinarily provided by the regular educational program. Outstanding abilities are present in students from all cultural groups, across all economic strata, and in all areas of human endeavor.

The total MCI points are based on total points earned, not the actual score. It is a sliding scale where more points can be earned in one area and less points in another. It is the total points that determine the area of identification, not a specific grade or percentile score.

Reconsideration of Services

The goal for reconsideration of services is to ensure that students are meeting basic grade level requirements as outlined in the Standard Course of Study and monitored by End of Grade testing.

In the event that an AIG student is not maintaining academic excellence, and if the School's AIG Team concludes that AIG enrichment opportunities are the cause of gaps in a student’s academic performance, services may be discontinued for a period of time so the student can again adequately demonstrate he or she is performing above the level of their peer group. How long those services are discontinued is up to the school, but should be limited to when the student again demonstrates academic excellence that is above their peer group.

Growing Our Genius by Reaching Our Wonders

The goal of GO GROW is to find students who demonstrate behaviors that are associated with traits of giftedness. These students may or may not be performing well academically. However, through a body of evidence, these students warrant opportunities outside of the academic classroom to develop their gifted potential through inquiry based learning that magnifies the social behaviors of giftedness. The goal of this type of service is to draw out and nurture the students’ intellectual and/or academic potential.
GO GROW Service is NOT Gifted Identification. Students must meet the gifted ID criteria to be formally identified gifted.

Academic Enrichment

Reading or math course acceleration opportunities in Grades 4-8Students who are performing at a Level 5 on EOG testing for reading and/or math will have the opportunity to be accelerated in math and/or reading subject areas. This service is provided either by the regular ed teacher or the AIG teacher as an enrichment opportunity.

Students with an 81% on Math and/or Reading EOG or Nationally Normed Achievement Test will be added to the AIG watchlist. Also see AIG Plan Practice 1B (Page 5), for K-3 Criteria.Students with an 81% on Math and/or Reading Achievement Test will be added to the watch list. These students are documented on the watchlist sheet and may receive academic enrichment services based on demonstrated content mastery. Services provided for enrichment and acceleration in these cases by the AIG teacher are a school based decision.

ANY student demonstrating content mastery, above their grade level peer group, in a math or reading target area as demonstrated through a body of evidence.Students demonstrating math and/or reading content mastery in an identified math or reading target area may receive academic enrichment services. Services provided for enrichment and acceleration by the AIG Teacher are a school based decision.

Exploratory- Inquiry Based Learning

Exploratory learning opportunities are designed for the school to reach the top 5-10% of the under-represented subgroups to provide direct pull out service by the AIG teacher.These students may work with the AIG Teacher to receive high-quality inquiry based instruction, based on student interest, as a platform to recognize and respond to their intellectual and academic potential. How service is provided is a school based decision.

Acceleration through Online Learning

Students in Grades 8-12 seeking acceleration opportunites are able to leverage online learning opportunities through Pitt County Virtual Academy.Parents should talk with the school counselor to explore online options for their child.

SERVICE at GO GROW Schools

Schools that have less than a 1% identified gifted population and/or only have a 1 day a week allotment for an AIG teacher, qualify as a GO GROW school. Services at these schools are adjusted based on availability of the AIG teacher. Services will be combined to maximize the AIG teacher's influence for all identified students, regardless of the area of identification. Another focus for these schools is to provide opportunites to serve students that currently do not meet the gifted identification criteria to create opportunities to demonstrate their academic potential.

All 4th-5th grade identified AIG students qualify for GO GROW Curriculum service. If space is available non-identified students that demonstrate behaviors that are associated with giftedness may also be included in this service.GO GROW Curriculum is a weekly half day (3 hours) service designed to provide enrichment opportunities for all identified gifted students.

Gifted students will receive 3 hours of GO GROW Curriculum.

Aptitude Screening and Testing Process

All 2nd grade students can participate in the district wide Aptitude screener.

Any student in 3rd grade or higher may be referred for screening throughout the school year, as needed for gifted services if all of the following criteria are met:
The prior year’s EOG score is 80% or higher in either math or reading AND/OR
Based on a body of evidence, the Needs Determination Team (NDT) recommends testing
On grade level released EOG (80% or higher)
Next grade level released EOG (70% or higher)
CFEs and DCAs are top 5%
iReady diagnostic is above grade level (tested out of current grade level).
AND
No previous aptitude score is available or the current score is in question and it has been at least one year since the student has been tested.

*Pitt County Schools will offer one additional aptitude test when a body of evidence is provided, during each grade level span (grades 3-5, grades 6-8, and 9-12).

At any time, and at the parent's expense, private testing may be done using most nationally normed aptitude and/or achievement tests. These results may be presented to the school's AIG Team and used to determine a student's eligibility for gifted services.
