For cross-pollination, the risk is as far as bees can fly for pollinator-reproduced plants, and as far as the wind blows for wind-pollinated plants.
10
The number of cold moist stratification (CMS) days is the amount of time the seeds must be kept cold and moist in order to enable germination. This can be done by keeping the seeds in the fridge for that time or by winter sowing. If seeds are winter sown, the number of CMS days is the minimum amount of time they must be outside in cold temperatures. In Ottawa, to determine the latest that seeds can go outside, the best practise is to count backwards from about mid-April.

Fleshy seeds (any seed inside a fleshy coating) i.e. Ilex verticillata, aronia melanocarpa, cornus family - have germination inhibitors in their seed coatings. It is very important to extract the seeds from the drupes and to clean off all residual fleshy material before sowing or storing them. This is usually best done by first squashing the drupes in a closed plastic bag, and then further working the resultant material in a bowl of water and/or through a sieve so as to separate out the seeds as much as possible. The seeds should then be given a very thorough final wash in soapy water, or rinse in hydrogen peroxide, to remove remaining traces of fleshy material, rinsed, and allowed to dry.
