This survey shows how to add an image from a remote server and set it as the initial value for an image question. This could be used to lookup a schematic of a building and then annotate it.

The solution uses the get_image() function. This downloads a remote media file so that it can be used in a form. The alternative, more manual approach, would be to preload all possible images onto the phone. This latter approach would be required if you want the solution to work offline, however it would be impractical if there were thousands of possible images that would need to be referenced.

get_image(param) takes 1 parameter which is the URL of the image. This can be text enclosed in single quotes or another question's value referenced using ${question_name} syntax.

Gerally you would put this get_image call in the calculation column of an image question.

a) The calcuate uses an if() function so that it will only be called if a value has been set for the image URL

b) The default value for the image is set in the calculation question

c) get_image replaces the older get_media call that had to be specified separately if you were using webforms or fieldTask. Using get_image the form will work with both.

d) The previous example for get_media looked up an image in wikipedia. However a new security control on the smap server prevents the accessing of images that are not served by the host server. To change this behaviour and allow images to be looked up on a separate image server you can modify the content security policy in the apache web server configuration.
