Year_AuditYYYY - The year of the Fishery Audit.

AUDIT_INDEX_STOCKYes/No - Indicates if this stock is an Oceana Canada index stock and part of the annual comparison in the Fishery Audit. The Fishery Audit index stock list (194 stocks) was created for the 2017 Fishery Audit and is based on marine fish and invertebrate stocks included in Oceana Canada’s inaugural 2016 report (Baum and Fuller 2016), combined with those included in the first public release of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) Sustainability Survey for Fisheries (SSF; 2015 results) and any stocks with newly available information from government reports that year. To make annual comparisons, we use the index stock list but continue to add stocks from any new marine fish or invertebrate stocks appearing in recently published CSAS reports, fiscal year workplan commitments or in the departments Sustainability Survey for Fisheries each year. New stocks do not have information for each year of the Fishery Audit, and thus are not included in annual comparisons and are indicated as not being index stocks.

Stock_ID_OceanaText string - Unique identification code for each stock to facilitate data manipulation. Some stock codes are also RAM Legacy Stock Assessment Database stock codes, but not all are since not all stocks here are included in that database.

DATASET_ORIGINText string - Indicates if the stock was originally included in the Fishery Audit dataset because it was included in the Baum and Fuller (2016) report, the 2015 results of the Sustainability Survey for Fisheries, a merger of both of these stock lists (i.e., the stock was in both but with different definitions in each), or from an annual Fishery Audit update process. This field is helpful if the SOURCES_COMMENTS field for 2017 records indicates "see stock dataset origin source", as it identifies the original source of the information for the record and indicates which source the user should seek for further information on the values in the original record.

Stock_in_DFO_SSFText string - Indicates if the stock also appears in the results of the most recent Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) Sustainability Survey for Fisheries (SSF), and if so how the stock definitions match up between it and the Oceana Canada Fishery Audit dataset. Please note that the SSF has had different stocks included, and some different definitions, since its initial release of 2015 results in October of 2016. This field compares the stock definitions here to the most recent SSF stock list available at the time of annual updating. Please note the SSF results are usually released in November of the year following the survey fishing year they cover (i.e., 2018 results were released in November of 2019). Thus, for the Fishery Audit update, the most recent results are usually for the fishing season two years prior. This field was new in 2020 (and in 2020, compared to the SSF 2018 results).

Taxa_seafisheries_landings_websiteText string - General high-level taxa grouping of organisms with categories for taxa corresponding to those found on the Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) seafisheries landings website (https://www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/stats/commercial/sea-maritimes-eng.htm). Combined with the "Ocean" field, this field was used to link volume in mt from LANDINGS_VOL_MT and calculate approximate value in the field VALUE_APPROXIMATION using information from the seafisheries landings website (see VALUE_APPROXIMATION field details for further information). It is retained here to indicate which taxa from the website was used for value approximations. This field was new in 2020.

DFO_RegionText string - DFO administrative region responsible for science/management of the stock. Please note that this information was initially obtained from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) Sustainability Survey for Fisheries (SSF) 2017 results or from regions identified in CSAS reports. Please note that there may be more than administrative region involved in the science or management of a given stock, or the region responsible for management may differ from that responsible for science. The primary region responsible for the stock was chosen based on our expert knowledge.

For 2017 records, values are a combination of the record's overall source and comments fields.

This field was new in 2019.

SRP_COMMENTSText string - Comments pertaining to the most recent update of trends in indicators to aid interpretation (e.g., "published in 2018 but data included only up to 2016" or "indicators to trigger complete assessment evaluated and not triggered", or "No trigger"). This was a new field in 2019.

LANDINGS_VOL_MTNumerical value - reported Canadian landings in metric tonnes (without unit) as found in the most recent stock assessment or index update report. This field was new in 2019. Please note only Canadian reported landings are included, any estimated discard mortality is excluded, as are landings in other jurisdictions (i.e., US). This is because this is used as an indicator of economic importance to Canada, and not overal removals regardless of landing or not. Stock assessment reports are the only location where publicly available landings data are reported by stock consistently across species and regions. Sometimes volume of reported landings obtained represented a recent annual average if the most recent year was not reported by itself, and sometimes the volume found was dated if the most recent report itself was dated. Therefore, it should be considered a proxy for recent harvest volume landed in Canada.

LANDINGS_VOL_DETAILSText string - Indicates the volume of landings (with unit) reported in the most recent document and year (or average of years) available, along with any relevant details. This was a new field in 2019.

VALUE_APPROXIMATIONNumerical value - approximate value of Canadain reported landings in dollars. This field was new in 2020. Please note only Canadian reported landings are included in the calculation, as found in the most recent stock assessment or index update report (see LANDINGS_VOL_MT for further details). Value is also not reported publicly by stock across all regions in consistent manner. However, DFO does report annual aggregate national value data by taxa group and province on its seafisheries landings website (https://www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/stats/commercial/sea-maritimes-eng.htm). A proxy for recent landed value for each stock was estimated by multiplying the volume of reported of landings (metric tonnes; LANDINGS_VOL_MT) obtained from reports by the most recent value per metric tonne of the taxa group and region to which the stock belongs in the DFO seafisheries landings website dataset (i.e., Taxa_seafisheries_landings_website field value). The value per metric tonne was calculated by taking the value per taxa group and region (Atlantic or Pacific) in the most recent year reported (2018) divided by the quantities per taxa group and region in the same year. Given the taxa level reported on the seafisheries landings website differ in resolution, and that actual ex-vessel prices differ by quality, region and time of year, this value should only be considered as a proxy for recent value of reported landings.

F_KNOWNYes/No - Indicates if fishing mortality (F) is known and presented in a recent stock assessment report.

F_ALL_SOURCESYes/No/Partially/Uncertain - Indicates if F estimate includes all sources of fishing mortality in its estimation. A value of 'Yes' indicates all suspected sources are included in the estimate (such as: targeted catch, incidental catch, catch used as bait, recreational catches, and food social and ceremonial catches) and that this is clearly indicated in the most recent stock assessment report. A value of 'No' indicates the stock assessment report clearly indicated potential sources of fishing mortality were missing from the F estimate. A value of 'Partially' indicates some sources of fishing mortality other than reported landings are included in some fashion but not all potential sources. A value of 'Uncertain' indicates it was not clear in the assessment report if all potential sources of F were included or not. This was a new field in 2019.
