| How to use the Russian Road Data Sheet
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Most long-distance highway route numbers will be alt names. Adding these alt names makes for better Waze routing by creating name continuity and road type continuity. These long-distance routes may pass through many different provinces. For each route, you may look for the cities which are within your MapRaid area and work toward the boundaries of the area. If you have trouble searching for any city names, or if the city does not yet exist on the Waze map, please check with Russian speakers and follow instructions in the wiki to request a new city to be created.
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Spreadsheets have similar structure:

| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Name | The road number to be used in Waze Map Editor, usually as alternate name
| Description | The list of the major cities in the area of the Region. Shown in both English and Russian.
| Length in Km | The length of the road in the region, if available.
| Status | Dropdown list with three choices: Not Started, In Progress, and Done. When you start editing the road, please choose: “In Progress”; after finishing it: “Done.”
| Permalink - Start | Permalink for the start of the road
| Permalink - End | Permalink for the end of the road
| Editor name | Please put your username when you start editing the road. It will help avoid editing conflicts during the MapRaid.
| Comments | You may leave comments that can be useful for local editors.
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| How do I do this? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 1 | Go to your MapRaid Group Area using the links in the MapRaid Wiki (this will help narrow down the search results)
| 2 | Go to your group’s Road Data spreadsheet
| 3 | Choose a road to work on.
| 4 | Put your Waze username in “Editor name” column
| 5 | Set the Status to “In Progress”
| 6 | Look at “Description (Russian)” column to find where the road starts and ends
| 7 | Reading in the “Description (Russian)” column, copy and paste the first city name into the search bar in Waze Map Editor. If you have unexpected search results or none, add the region name to the search bar.
| a. | The search results list will typically have the format: Town/City name, District/Province, Region
| b. | Choose the search result that is in the correct city and the correct region.
| c. | Click on this icon: , it will take you to the Waze livemap <www.waze.com/livemap>
| d. | Click on the Pin and click the button “Set as Origin”
| e. | Verify that the search result is in the correct city and the correct region
| 8 | Back to Waze map editor; search the next city, this will be the destination.
| a. | Hover over the coordinates and copy them
| 9 | Go to Waze Livemap, paste the coordinates in the second textbox (where the flag and faded “To” is)
| 10 | We have an approximate route. Determine the most logical route based on what is already mapped in Waze Map Editor and the routing given in the livemap.
| 11 | In Waze Map Editor, look for the most logical starting place of the road, Some roads number names were already mapped, usually as an alternate name and you will not have to determine the most logical route. You will just need to verify that there is no break in road type continuity and name continuity.
| a. | Put the permalink on the Permalink - Start column.
| 12 | Once you decide the logical route for the road, in Waze livemap, search for the last city listed in the “Description (Russian)” column and decide the most logical ending place of the road.
| a. | Put the permalink on the Permalink - End column.
| 13 | Set or Verify the Road Name for the entire route. You can do this in parts or in one seating.
| a. | Be sure that the route has the same road type and segment name.
| 14 | When you complete the route, change the status to “Done”
| 15 | Optional: If the length of the route is not given, make a route at waze.com/livemap and put the distance into the third column (“in Km”).
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Rinse and Repeat on other roads! Ask your group leader or co-leader if you are not sure where to put the names on the map.
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Example: The Road has been previously mapped
| 1 | I want to work on “18P-1”.
| 2 | Write username “GeekDriverPeaceful” on “Editor name” Column and set Status to “In Progress”
| 3 | Look at the “Description (Russian)” text: “автомобильная дорога "Волгоград (от г. Волжский) - Астрахань" (в границах территории Волгоградской области)”
| a. | автомобильная дорога = highway
| b. | в границах территории Волгоградской области = within Volgograd Region
| c. | What is important is the text between the quotes “"Волгоград (от г. Волжский) - Астрахань” = "Volgograd (from the city of Volzhsky) - Astrakhan"
| i. | This means that the road goes from the city of Volzhsky to Astrakhan.
| 4 | In Waze map editor, search “Волжский”, this will be the origin. If I had strange search results or none, I would add the region name: “Волгоградская область” ***Searching in English will not work. Search in Russian/Cyrillic.***
| a. | The search results list will typically have the format: Town/City name, District/Province, Region
| b. | In this case it is: Волжский, округ Волжский, Волгоградская область.
| i. | Волжский is the town/city
| ii. | округ Волжский is the district
| iii. | Волгоградская область is the region
| c. | Click on this icon: , it will take you to the Waze livemap <www.waze.com/livemap>
| d. | Click on the Pin and click the button “Set as Origin”
| 5 | Back to Waze map editor; search “Астрахань”, this will be the destination.
| a. | Hover over the coordinates and copy them
| 6 | Go to Waze Livemap, paste the coordinates in the second textbox (where the flag and faded “To” is)
| 7 | We have an approximate route. Determine the most logical route based on what is already mapped in Waze Map Editor and the routing given in the livemap.
| a. | Looking around in Waze Map Editor, it appears that the road has already been mapped but not completely. https://www.waze.com/en-US/editor?env=row&lon=44.72565&lat=48.81581&zoom=5&segments=328754990.
| i. | Put the permalink on the Permalink - Start column.
| b. | Looking to the east, there is a road named “Волгоград - Астрахань,” this is the most logical road for “18P-1”, so we will follow and add the Road Name to the alternate name all the way to “Астрахань” In fact this matches the names given in the spreadsheet! This is not always the case, but many rural roads have “City-City” in their primary names since local Russian people call the roads that way even though the name is not official. You can also use StreetView to find signs with city names.
| c. | I continue to follow the route until it reaches the boundary of the Volgograd Region since the “Волгоград - Астрахань” route goes through multiple regions. So in this case, it does not end at Астрахань. We continue until we see the border (pink lines) from the MapRaid Script. This is because the description says “within Volgograd Region”
| d. | https://www.waze.com/en-US/editor?env=row&lon=45.60796&lat=48.60221&zoom=2&segments=293820211,271406712 is the end point of “18P-1.”
| i. | Put this PL in the Road Sheet on the Permalink - End column.
| 8 | Use WME Magic script to see the alternate names, so that we can see our Road Number (18P-1).
| a. | I followed the already mapped 18P-1 until here: https://www.waze.com/en-US/editor?env=row&lon=44.87763&lat=48.71491&zoom=3&segments=264446417. There is no name after here, so select the appropriate segments following the route, type “18P-1” using Cyrillic Characters, and choose from the dropdown list. Press apply and save.
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Definitions | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| - | Name Continuity: all segments from Point A to Point B have the same name in either primary or alternate field in WME
| - | Road Type Continuity: all segments from Point A to Point B have the same road type (Freeway, Major Highway, etc), if one segment has a different road type then the road type continuity is broken.
| - | область: region / province
| - | Район: district | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| - | городской округ OR округ: district in urban areas
