38 | Physical Description | Background
39 | Michael West is particularly unimposing, short of stature and naturally heavyset, though he's actually in decent shape from constant travel. His hairy skin is tanned, and he has a few obvious but minor scars. His head is topped by a mop of reddish-brown ear-length hair, straggly and frazzled, though he has a beard that he keeps short-trimmed. His typical expression is a relaxed half-lidded smile, giving the impression he feels that all is right in the world. Michael's usual attire consists of durable cargo pants and a many-pocketed vest over a long traveler's coat, along with a pair of sturdy boots; he prefers earth tones, but has been known to dress up for fancy occasions. A pair of goggles usually rests on his head. | Born at sea, Michael calls no single region home; his parents were part of a merchant fleet trawling the sealanes between the regions, modern nomads drifting from one port to the next. He spent his youth constantly on the move, exposed to a dizzying range of environments, cultures, and ideas. The curious boy was open-minded and always eager to learn more, even when poking his nose in where it didn't belong got him in trouble - he prefers learning through experience rather than reading about something in a book. While he loved the freedom his family's profession afforded him, as he began to apprentice under his parents in his teen years he found life as a merchant didn't suit him well. While there was certainly challenge in hawking wares, buying low and selling high, and riding the waves of a global market, Michael got no real satisfaction from haggling with customers and clients. It was nearing his eighteenth birthday that Michael found his true calling, when a rare artifact his family had procured vanished mere moments after their buyer brought it home. The local authorities thought it was an open-and-shut case, but something seemed off to Michael about their investigation. His curiosity got the better of him, and with a bit of research and deduction, he was able to prove their 'obvious' suspect was innocent and unearth the true culprit, recovering the relic in the process. From that day forward, Michael realized that more than anything else he loved solving problems - the more challenging, the better. Whenever his family made port, rather than working with his parents, he went in search of odd jobs in a myriad of fields. At the same time, he kept his eyes open and his nose to the ground for anything interesting going on, and immediately got himself involved in whatever he discovered. Whether that meant assisting in police investigations, helping questionable patrons track down valuable items, participating in Pokemon hunts, or getting contraband past a blockade, he was game for almost anything that didn't involve committing heinous crimes. As long as it challenged him, getting paid was at best a tertiary benefit. Over the years, Michael has developed a reputation as a meddler in certain circles - but one that can be relied on to get the job done, with creativity and panache. This reputation is what drew the Professor and his research them to recruit him; and what greater challenge could Michael find than venturing into the unkown?
40 | Personality | ||||||||||||
41 | Michael appears friendly and outgoing on the surface, and that's mostly the case; but he's got a sarcastic streak and a habit of being too clever for his own good that occasionally comes back to bite him. Highly aware of his surroundings, often he'll let slip an observation or ask a question that can unnerve or annoy others - he doesn't have much of a filter. He's got a tendency to talk too much, sometimes stumbling over his words or accidentally interrupting people. Michael is easily distracted, too, often skipping from one subject to the next on a tangent that seems unrelated to anyone but him. All that, combined with an insatiable curiosity and an overactive imagination, means he gets himself in trouble a lot. Fortunately, his wealth of seemingly random knowledge and skillsets across a wide range of subjects are often useful enough for employers to keep him around. He's gotten pretty good at talking himself out of trouble when it comes, too. When riled, Michael becomes a seemingly bottomless well of snark, his sense of humor rarely flagging even in dire circumstances. Confronted with difficult decisions, he will usually go with his gut instinct rather than waste too much time on deliberation. Once decided, his opinions are not easily swayed, and he can be stubborn at times. (Fortunately, his instincts are usually reliable.)
