I study the social psychological and cognitive processes involved in decision making, especially with regard to societal issues (i.e., social dilemmas) like cooperatively solving major environmental problems. Basically, I try to understand the psychological factors that determine how well groups of people work together, or fail to work together to solve important problems in society (especially environmental conservation problems). I also study legal aspects of environmental governance and foundations of democracy (e.g., public participation). Finally, I do both laboratory experiments and field research on real-world cooperative situations (e.g., how groups govern water resources).
Social psychology, Environmental Decision Making (Behavioral Dimensions of Sustainability), Motivation, Cooperation, Environmental Governance (e.g., community-based solutions to environmental problems, public participation/democratic process, watershed management/governance). Scientific method (experimental and non-experimental).

Botany, Physics & Astronomy, Zoology
I created and have taught an astrobiology course; I regularly teach conservation biology and ecology courses; I teach a dinosaur course; and I teach general biology. When there is a need I teach botany and zoology courses. I was the sole instructor in the Horticulture program at JCTC before the program was discontinued. I owned and operated a business that produced horticultural products, designed landscapes, and consulted on land use issues as related to water quality, drainage, and vegetation.
I have presented talks on astrobiology to the Louisville Astronomical Society.

I am an experimental cognitive psychologist. Over the last 35 years I have studied the way people perceive, store and use information to solve problems and make decisions. My doctoral research examined patterns of interference created when verbal side tasks were combined with a complex computer game ("Save the Whale"). Since that time I have explored the many ways in which what and how people think affect outcomes in a variety of organizations including classrooms.

Agriculture, Chemistry: Analytical & Physical, Ecology & Environmental Science
Air quality and atmospheric chemistry especially with regard to particulate matter. I do instrument development and testing, emissions work, and fundamental chemistry studies. Currently focused on agriculture, but have worked on vehicle emissions, biomass burning, dust and coal combustion in the past.
Anything to do with air quality including regulatory standards, effects on health, visibility, sources, the reactions that chemicals undergo in the atmosphere. Potentially climate change as well, although I am more on the aerosol/particulate matter side than the greenhouse gas side that most people are interested in.

As an applied medical anthropologist dedicated to teaching and practicing anthropology, my research focuses on structures of violence as experienced and expressed by local populations in the United States. This has included her work with victims of gender-based violence, families affected by incarceration, people with HIV/AIDS, and first-generation college women. My recent work theorizes the intersection between feminist ethnography and feminist activism and traces the legacies of women anthropologists in applied anthropology.
