This spreadsheet lists special elections or run-offs in House or state legislative districts from 1989 to present used to compute the Special Elections Index. Special elections held in an even year, but after the regularly scheduled November elections, are included in the next year's dataset.

Those for state legislatures in states that normally hold legislative elections in odd years

Those which took place during regularly scheduled November elections in even years
8
Those where one of the top two candidates was from a third party

Those in multi-member districts

Those where the top two candidates were from the same party

Those where the top two candidates received <90% of the vote
12
Those where a major party candidate had recently been affiliated on the ballot with the opposite major party

Those where an officeholder died and their family member ran to replace them

Those where an officeholder ran to replace himself
