| 0 | Sample feedback. How it should be documented. Alt+Enter/Opt.+Return for Paragraph Space | 12345 | Week 5 General feedback: I came out 2 designs for this exercise. The first design is the one with 3 columns and justify text. The second design is more minimalist, with only 2 columns and left align. Both designs have good reading rhythm and cross alignment is fulfilled. Specific feedback: First design, it is not advisable to have 3 column text body in A4 size. The use of justified text created 'rivers' which need to be avoided. The second design, which is more minimalist, overall is good with kerning and tracking. The ragging is smooth but there is one orphan found that need to be improved. Mr.Vinod commented second option is better. Less is more. good alignment and arrangement. Week 4 General feedback: We were encouraged to read at least 2-3 books and document them in further reading section. Specific feedback: Lectures commented my blog is overall good. The information is documented nicely with the correct sections, design progress with some of the screenshot, reflections and further reading. Mr. Vinod encouraged me to maintain this for the assignments in the future. For the gif animation, I can improve by showing the transformation from the original font then wiggling effect appears. Week 3 Specific Feedback: The word slice is good with the idea of changeing the "I" to a knife. Mr.Vinod said the word "scream" looks good as it brings the meaning, it's acceptable although is slightly much distortion. The word punch is great with the force of a big "P" . Lastly, the "wave" can be better to create a stronger impact. Week 2 General Feedback: Suffecient word exploration with the use of mind map. May choose better design to digitalise with suitable typeface. Specific Feedback: The word 'scream' gives a scary and horror feeling which is good. Week 1 General Feedback: Blog is set up nicely and the link provided is linked to Typography page. Blog sections divided properly. | Week 7 General Feedback: It is important for us to familiarize the typeface we using, the line length, leading. Specific feedack: Identify and focus one word that you wanted to express. The impact of word expression can be better. I did two designs and the second one is better but the word 'IMPACT' can adjust to improve the visual impact. Week 6 General feedback: Submission of Text Formatting must be in PDF and JPEG export (High Quality). Screen grabs will not be accepted. Specific Feedback: The first sketches and attempt for the title can be better, the body text is good with line spacing and ragging. Besides, the leading text is okay but can consider using the same font with a different weight. The idea of applying Bauhaus design is cool, can further explore by tilting the angle. | Week 14 JPG for Task 1 (Ex2) not visible in final compilation WeeK 13 General feedback: Tips and instruction to prepare the final compilation and reflection, can refer seniors work as guide. This time we need to include sketch for Font design. Specific feedback: The sticker is relatively well done, keep it up. Week 12 -TASK 3(B) General Feedback: The size, weight, space between the letterform depends on the type of letterform. Once the tracking is right, only move on to add other elements. The sticker needs to add a 7pt outline to protect the sticker design. Specific feedback: The mooncake sticker looks better, kerning and letterspacing between the 'PP' and 'TI' need to be wider. The size of 'Min Autumn' is fine, the colour of the egg yolk version (reddish-orange) seems interesting, can be further explored. Week 11 -TASK 3(A) Good work! Tough character to produce, great effort for a first font. Very good exploration and progression! Keep it up! General Feedback: Expression needs to be simple and impactful. We must develop critical thinking skill to analyse and explain our design. Train yourself to evaluate your designs. Specific feedback: Mooncake and lantern design concept consider okay. Replacement of the Taylor logo in the letter T seem to be nice, however, the mooncake elements is too much, can be reduced. For lantern design, the Taylor logo as tassel can be smaller Week 10 General feedback: Idea sketches, the process of generating font in Fontlab need to be documented in e-portfolio. Try not to watch tutorial and do it at the same times, this might cause missing of important steps. Specific feedback: The font design is overall good to go, it shows a little of inconsistency but it may the part of the characteristic. For typography poster, the phrase 'obey me' will be better to put in the same line and slated toward the description. Week 9 General feedback: Examine the font design by its readability, consistency and legibility. It is advised to start designing letter o, as the curve is is related to a and g. Prevent the loop heavier than the main part especially the 't'. Create the main fill, see the proportions. Specific feedback: Good design exploration with references. The idea of using coffee to develop the design is good, may proceed with that. Letter 'b' needs to be closer to the stem and make sure the pattern of the font is having the same angle and direction. Letter 'e' can be further improved. Week 8 -TASK 3(A) Independent learning week and finalising task 2 | Week 14 General feedback: Always check the link whether its correct and functional. Practice at least once a week during sembreak to revise the techniques and knowledge we have learned. Specific feedback: Mr.Vinod decided to make (Task 1 Helveltica jpg post) compulsory, as sometimes students tend to move the pdf. Hence, I uploaded jpg format in my E-portfolio as well. Week 13 Specific feedback: Your Task 3B is not complete. Now completed sir. Week 11 Specific feedback: You did not label your taks 3A post correctl. Updated sir. Week 9 Specific feedback: Your eportfolio post is not complete. Where's your Feedback, Reflection and Further Reading? Already updated sir. Week 6 Specific feedback: Please arrange the content chronologically. The final submission must also consist of embedded pdf files, not just JPG. Also please ensure no screen grabs are submited as final submissions.Noted and done." | https://mrvinodsfake.blogspot.com/search/label/Typography | new-gmail@gmail.com
| 1 | HO WINNIE | 0364866 | Week 2 : General Feedback : After taking a first look at our blogs, Mr Vinod reminded us to put in the dates in the description of our figures. For the sketchings, we were told not to rely too much on pictorials and illustration to bring out the effect of the text. Specific Feedback : Blog is well done, for the sketches especially "shock" try to explore more options, other than that, other words are good to go for digitalization. For the illustration digitalization, consider adding more layers to it as it gives off a stronger feel. Week 3 : General Feedback : Reflection and feedbacks need to be constantly updated, it will be a good practice to always label our images. Specific Feedback : Blog is on track, for the animated gif task , Ms Hsin suggest to try illusion instead of Windy. Try to adjust the degree of the text to give it a spinning effect and shorten the time of each frame . Mr Vinod suggested that i can add more layers of illusion text to the gif. Overall, final gif looks well done. Week 4 : General Feedback : GIF needs to look smooth and avoid adding too much unnesscary frames, constantly upload our design process Specific Feedback : Blog is on track and can move on to Task 2 which is text formatting Week 5 General Feedback : Try not to put images that are too big that will overshadow the importance of the text and choose a font that has good readability for body text. Specific Feedback : The layout for my exercise 2 "I am Helvetica" is interesting as I am using irregularity to layout the texts. Ms Hsin commented that my byline can consider a different arrangement and the caption should be longer to so it is easy to recognize. Week 6 General feedback : Avoid widows and orphans in our editorial text, kerning needs to be done to our text, design a type expression that does not sacrifice too much on readability. Specific feedback : The layout for #2 is too complicated, not recommended to use. Instead the text expression for layout #1 and layout #3 is good, try to combine them together to create a new layout. Use black border to hold the text better. | Week 5 : General Feedback : Try not to put images that are too big that will overshadow the importance of the text and choose a font that has good readability for body text. Specific Feedback : The layout for my exercise 2 "I am Helvetica" is interesting as I am using irregularity to layout the texts. Ms Hsin commented that my byline can consider a different arrangement and the caption should be longer to so it is easy to recognize. Week 6 : General feedback : Avoid widows and orphans in our editorial text, kerning needs to be done to our text, design a type expression that does not sacrifice too much on readability. Specific feedback : The layout for #2 is too complicated, not recommended to use. Instead the text expression for layout #1 and layout #3 is good, try to combine them together to create a new layout. Use black border to hold the text better. Week 7 General Feedback : Do not use italic words fully for whole body text, use only in highlighting important details. Specific Feedback : - | Week 8 : Reccess Week Week 9 : General Feedback : Remember to retain the original strokes of the designed typeface so we can easily edit it if any changes are needed Specific feedback : Try using the monospace technique to sketch your letters, after that use width tool mainly in illustrator to adjust the width of strokes Week 10 : General feedback : Align the alphabets in a single line so its easier to compare, consider digitalising letters that have similar shape like G and C Specific feedback : First digitalised font has many irregularities, the width of the thickest and the thinnest should be consistent across all letters Week 11 General Feedback : Try to reduce the number of anchor points in the letter as it will make it harder for us to adjust the shape of the letter. Instead, put anchor points only on the core parts of the design. Week 12 General Feedback : Follow the kerning guidelines given as it can help save alot of time in the process. Form words using the letters and observe the kerning, put letters side by side to ensure that kerning is done well. Specific Feedback: Decrease the kerning space between letter H and O as it looks abit far away and the curve on letter S need to be adjusted to reduce counter space Week 13 General Feedback : Do not overcrowd the poster, the main point of the poster is to promote the font Specific Feedback : Initial draft of poster does not show the unique point of your font, your font looks good when stacked together so I can consider rearranging the words Specific Feedback : The curve on the letter C and S and G needs to curve in more to reduce the counter space. The thickness and the thinnest width of the letter should be consistent , set a letter as the guideline to follow Week 12 General Feedback : Follow the kerning guidelines given as it can help save alot of time in the process. Form words using the letters and observe the kerning, put letters side by side to ensure that kerning is done well. Specific Feedback: Decrease the kerning space between letter H and O as it looks abit far away and the curve on letter S need to be adjusted to reduce counter space | W7 Task 1 updated | https://0364866.blogspot.com/2023/09/typoraphy.html | winlas167@gmail.com
| 2 | KIM SEOYOON | 0357755 | Week 5 Specific Feedback: Consider the hierarchy when placing the image and paragraphs. Make sure both paragraphs and heading images are aligned. Update finalized details on e-portfolio for submission. Week 4 Specific Feedback: Ms. Hsin advised me to add more sequels to the type expression animation frames for the smoothness of the movement. For Exercise 2, there should be 2 jpeg files—one with the grid and one without the grid. For the finalized work of Exercise 2, submit 2 pdf (with baseline and without baseline) and the overall submission should have 1 layout of 4-5 pages. Document the process in the e-portfolio. Mr. Vinod told us that choosing the right ppi (pixel per inch)/ pixel quality of the exported outcomes is important. A pixelated image might lead to mark deduction/ rejection so keep this in mind when exporting finalized outcomes. General Feedback: For compiling the process work in the e-portfolio, Mr. Vinod suggested that we should not compile process photos in Google Drive as it might not be accessible to others, and instead attach the process photos straight onto the e-portfolio. Only the finalized work shall be attached via Gdrive in PDF format. Week 3 Specific Feedback: For the word "Illusion," ungroup the words and slightly move the letter 'N', or remove the small piece to avoid visual noises in the design. Make sure the edges of each letter are joined smoothly for the word "Windy" using the pen tool and pathfinder. For the word "Shock," try creating an illusion effect behind the letter 'O' to enhance the meaning. General Feedback: Document the process of each work. Consider the hierarchy of the text when documenting on the e-portfolio. Update further readings. For type expression animation, it should have 24 frames per second for smooth movement of the letters. Week 2 General Feedback: Came up with idea sketches of the chosen words. Ms. Hsin told us to add a description for each sketch design to convey the effect. Specific Feedback: I need to focus more on utilizing letterforms instead of distorting and adding effects to my design. Week 1 General Feedback: Created e-portfolio and made some adjustments to the blog in terms of adding detailed information | Week 6 General Feedback: Avoid orphans—make sure the paragraph does not leave a single word at the end. Specific Feedback: Try utilizing the negative and positive space more in type expression. Week 7 General Feedback: Update feedback on the feedback sheet every week to avoid mark deductions. Complete the e-portfolio for task 2 by next week. Never apply Italic font to a body text as italics are usually used to highlight certain words or sentences. Specific Feedback: Make sure InDesign settings are set to greyscale so that the preview tone matches the tone in the exported file. | Week 13 General Feedback: The main objective of the BW poster is to promote your typeface. Ensure all letters and punctuations are featured in your poster composition. Make final compilation of finalized submissions on your blog. Specific Feedback: Ms Hsin Yin commented that the repetition of the letter "up" looks interesting. Make sure the poster does not consist of too many graphic elements. Week 12 General Feedback: Make sure to name the font. When composing in poster, the words have to be the same point size. Ensure the byline <yourfont's_name><by_your_name>,<2023.> is Univers LT Std. at 8pts. Specific Feedback: Ensure the cross-stroke on the letter 't' sits on the x-height. Reduce spine thickness on the letter 's'. For the letter 's', make sure the beak follows the same structural shape as the rest of the letterforms. Week 11 General Feedback: Make sure all the letterforms have the same weight/ consistency. Create strokes into paths for further process on Fontlab. Specific Feedback: Letterforms should maintain the same height according to set x-height. Standardize the base shapes of the letterforms based on the chosen letterform so that the counterforms are in consistent shape. Try to create several design variables for the letters 's' and 'g' referring to the existing blackletter designs. For the dot in the letter 'i', try forming the shape into a diamond/parallelogram shape. Week 10 General Feedback: Create guidelines (baseline median etc) below the letterforms so that the overall letterforms are placed consistently. Make final adjustments on the letterform design. Specific Feedback: Mr Vinod suggested referring to the post about punctuation design for enhanced stability of punctuations as well as taking a look at other existing typefaces such as Bodoni and Univers. As my median/ x-height was placed quite higher, Ms. Hsin Yin suggested decreasing the x-height of the letterforms for a more consistent look. The overall letterforms (specifically letters 's' and 'e') should follow the base shape structure of my design which is similar to a parallelogram. For the letter 'g', widen the bottom part of the letterform horizontally and make the middle line more curvy. For the letter 't', the horizontal cross of the letterform should follow the x-height horizontally rather than placing it diagonally. The overshoot and x-height of the letterforms should be the same on the letters 'n' and 'h'. Week 9 General Feedback: The digitized sketch should have raw strokes, an outlined shape, and a united version of the overall letterform to avoid problems caused during the manipulation stage. Avoid drawing the letterforms. Pay attention to the small details when writing thin strokes. Specific Feedback: Practice the skeleton (main structure strokes) of the letterforms before to enhance the consistency of the letterforms. Make sure not all of the letters are hero letters (letters that stand out among other letters). Select a few in a range to stand out and for clearer readability and recognition of each letterform. Drawing baseline/ x-height lines beforehand helps to create a more consistent letterform in size. 10 | 3 | KONG GA WAI | 0359692 | Week 2: Try not to visualize them as an illustration. The design for Stab still need some working. "Maybe try using the letter 'T'. Week 3: I can't distort too much with the letters. I can exaggerate the text. | Week 10: Have an indicator to indicate how wide a letter I will be making and keep them consistent. Week 11: - In most fonts for the letter 'N' inner strokes are thick. - The letter 'I' tends to be thinner than 'T' - My letter 'S' and 'C' look wider than my letter 'O', advised to use 'O' to adjust their wideness, try to have them to look around the same wideness. | https://kongtypography.blogspot.com/search/label/Typography | sylas.kgw@gmail.com
| 4 | LAI JIA XUAN | 0364898 | Week 5 General feedback: The hierarchy of text is very important and should be shown clearly. Eportfolio for task 1 should be completed by 1 Nov 2023. Specific feedback: Gif and text formatting is ok. Week 4 General feedback: Can use 24 frames per sec to make gif smoother. Specific feedback: Try using more frames bit by bit to make it smoother. Week 3 General feedback: State the font you are using for each sketch. MUST use 10 fonts provided. Black & White only. No illustration. Personal feedback: For STAB, don’t distort the A, try changing font weight instead. Others are ok and straightforward. Week 2 General feedback: Each sketch should have a clear and short description of the work. Refer to the 10 typefaces when sketching so you can visualise your final work better. Label each of the sketches eg. Dive 2.0 so things could be stated clearly in the eportfolio. Avoid illustrations and pictorials exaggerated distortion and also foreign language. Specific feedback: Try to do the effects with words instead of illustration. Sketches for huge were too straightforward. Ideas for windy are somewhat similar. Use different type weight to show contrast between letters for stab ; heavier type weight for small and lighter for bigger letters. Week 1 General feedback: Set up eportfolio and paste the permalink to the google sheet provided. | Week 7 General feedback: Do not use italic for whole body text. Specific feedback: The second barcode without the lines is better. Week 6 General feedback: Beware of orphans and avoid them. Don’t use italic for whole text. Can break text into small titles/ individual paragraphs. Specific feedback: Can try to proceed with barcode idea or the code script idea. Bauhaus letter B quarter circle shape idea is good. | Week 12 General feedback: Follow the instruction in the given video carefully. Personal feedback: Make letter O thinner and make all the strokes of the other letters the same. Week 11 General feedback: Stroke width should be consistent on all letterforms. Personal feedback: Diagonal stroke of letter N should be thicker, refer to other serif fonts, Letter T is too wide. Adjust guideline. Week 10 General feedback: Use existing typeface as a reference for baseline, x-height and capline. Specific feedback: Letter N doesn’t need details where the vertical stroke and slanted stroke meet. Refer to Janson and Baskerville. Use letter d as guide for letter O’s stroke width. Week 9 General feedback: Write not draw the letters. Reverse contrast is a good approach. Make sure to leave a counter for letter g. Use the grid on the graph paper as guide for baseline x-height etc. Specific feedback: Concaved stem is good, can proceed. | W7 Task 1 updated | https://0364898.blogspot.com/search/label/Typography | jiaxuan2280813@gmail.com
| 5 | LEW GUO YING | 0365721 | Week 5: General Feedback: Start Task 2, open one more new e-portfolio is Task 2. e-portfolio Task 1 submission date is in 1 November. Specific Feedback: Pictures and articles can look neater by keeping a line. Keeping a line between pictures and articles looks both neater and better. When using two images it is better not to repeat them. And with justify, a rectangular pattern is formed underneath the article. Week 4 General Feedback:Upload all tasks as JPG files in the e-portfolio, and for the final task, simply embed the PDF. Specific Feedback:Everything is in order for the e-portfolio. We have the process outlined, a PDF document prepared, additional reading materials, and the lecturer's contribution is complete. Regarding the GIF, the chopping animation contains too many intricate components, and the intended message may not come across intuitively. In contrast, using a GIF of a "roar" would be a better choice. Additionally, for the "roar" GIF, there are significant movements; you can enhance the flame effect to achieve a smoother and more fluid motion performance. Week 3 General feedback:For e-portfolio all is good and on the right track. Specific feedback:For typefont design windy W1 is better as it has a windy feel to it that creates a depression in the middle. R1 is better and C12 are both good to try and use. As for the Dive design, you can try to merge the concept of D123, there is a kind of font suspended on water, but ‘i' dives down and produces bubbles. Week 2 General feedback: Use the provided 10 fonts to complete the exercise. Don't forget to label and write a simple description, and also write the date. Furthermore, don't distort the letterforms. Should make good use of feedback by lecturer. Further reading is important for every week, even just reading for one page. Specific feedback: Mr Vinod: In e-portfolio, The word does not need to be too big, it can be of a normal size. There is no need for too much empty space, a horizontal rule is needed, and it would be better to put the title on the left-hand side. And don't forget to include a label, description, and date as well. Ms Low Hsin Yin: I need to remember to label so that I can get the feedback easily next time. Try not to deform and distort the letterform, and also avoid using pictorials. Week 1 General feedback:An e-portfolio is important to all of us. Taking notes when the lecturer is talking not only can help us stay focused but can also prevent us from missing out on important points. | Week 7 General Feedback: Cannot use italics for whole sentences. Task 2 is due on 12.11.23. Also, purchase 3 Artline pens for Task 3. Specific Feedback: When using justified alignment, be careful with rivers, which occur when gaps form in the text. To prevent rivers, consider adjusting spacing or using a different alignment. Screens may not accurately display rivers, so it is helpful to print out the text to check for them. Week 6 General Feedback: When aligning text to an article, it's important to avoid widows and orphans. Kerning adjustments can improve tidiness. Also, Task 1 is due on 3.11.23. Specific Feedback: The headline design can be linear, and repeating patterns can draw attention to the text. Use arrows to replace "to," but keep all words visible. | Week 12 General Feedback: When creating BW A4 poster; ensure sentence/phrase/words are the same point size/ font size; ensure the byline <yourfont's_name><by_your_name>,<2023.> is Univers LT Std. at 8pts. Specific Feedback: The size of commas and periods needs to be adjusted. Upon closer inspection, there's a slight inconsistency in the slant of fonts like T, H, and L, requiring some time for fine-tuning. Week 11 General Feedback: The stroke width needs to be consistent to maintain a reasonable appearance for each character. Specific Feedback: Pay attention to the stroke width, preferably using 'O' and 'H' as standards to ensure overall balance in all characters. Adjust the size of dots, making them smaller as the number of dots increases. Lastly, attempt to standardize the angle of dots for uniformity and neatness. Week 10 General Feedback: The instructor mentioned that there's no need to download or purchase the paid version of FontLab. We should manage the usage time effectively with the demo version of FontLab, allowing us to input our own fonts for fine-tuning. Finally, during class time in D704, we'll be able to export the fonts using FontLab. Specific Feedback: The font is of the italic type, so attention must be given to the angle by slanting the font appropriately. Dots can be placed closer to the end of the font characters to maintain consistency throughout all the characters. To resemble musical notes more closely, it's recommended to retain some characteristics of musical notes, such as keeping the direction of the dots uniform. Week 9 General Feedback: The difference between Calligraphy and Lettering lies in how they create letter shapes. Calligraphy involves using specific angles and penmanship for varied letter shapes, while Lettering focuses on outlining letters, not necessarily following writing sequences. Specific Feedback: Some sketches, rather than resembling writing, seem more like outlining and drawing fonts. Although they're good, they might not be suitable for this task. There's can digitize the fonts in two ways: one involves changing the angle, to appear simple yet effective, while the other includes adding dot-like notes at the end of strokes, which can also be experimented with. | W7 Task 1 updated | https://0365721.blogspot.com/2023/09/typography.html | F | heiying0410@gmail.com
| 6 | LI JINGBU | 0367209 | WEEK2: General Feedback: Mr Vinod suggested that we need to take a clear sketch. Specific Feedback:Ms Hsin said that the overall idea of my sketch for roar was OK, but the sketch for stab was not so good. WEEK3: General Feedback: We need to update the blog more seriously. Specific Feedback:Ms Hsin reminded me to digitalis my text expressions as soon as possible. Complete the task on time. WEEK4: General Feedback: GIF needed to add enough frames and made it look smooth when play. Specific Feedback: Ms Hsin Yin recommended to update design process. WEEK5: General Feedback: Remember to update blog every week. Specific Feedback:The text is not aligned with the grid and needs to be modified. | Week 6 General feedback:Further proficiency in the use of id and a deeper understanding of text Specific feedback :remember to align text Week 7 General feedback:Through this week's study, my typography skills have improved Specific feedback:The layout is too simple and the grid is not aligned | WEEK8 Generally Feedback:I learnt how to write differently with different thicknesses of pens. Special Feedback:This week I've been experimenting with three different colours of marker pens of different thicknesses and have analysed four letters, which has given me initial ideas for constructing my own typeface. WEEK9 Generally Feedback:The drafts of the fonts were improved with the help of the teacher. Special Feedback:Fonts should be handled more carefully, e.g. the transformation of letter thicknesses should be smoother rather than very rigid. WEEK10 Generally Feedback:Font digitisation should first use the pen tool to create the basic path, adjusted to the appropriate width and then outline the stroke for fine-tuning. Special Feedback:My teacher instructed me that I should make the thick and thin transformations of the digitised letters smoother, and that sharp turns would make the font look bad. WEEK11 Generally Feedback:Every little detail in digitisation deserves attention, otherwise it may spoil the harmony of the whole. Special Feedback:After the teacher's guidance I added as much detail as possible to the font, modifying the size, spacing and thickness of the font. WEEK12 Generally Feedback:Started trying to export fonts and modify spacing in fontlab. Special Feedback:Letter T should not be spaced too far apart or they will look weird overall. | https://0367209.blogspot.com/2023/09/typography.html | F | jingbuli6@gmail.com

| 8 | LIM EN YU | 0354452 | Week 2 General Feedback: For the E-portfolio, Mr Vinod has emphasized on the format of the blog which include the title, description, labels, lines and the content. We are required to proceed with the research, feedback, reflection and further reading part. General feedback about type expression is that we should not make the word illustrative or include any pictorial elements. Besides that, we should also create the type expression based on the 10 typefaces given. Specific Feedback: I have gotten personal feedback from Ms Hsin Yin of my type expression task. She suggested me to avoid pictorial element and use the typefaces provided only. She advised me to search for any typeface and font provided that suits my type expression the most. Week 3 General Feedback: For this week, Ms Hsin Yin has once again go through out E-portfolio documentation process. She has mentioned that the size of font and the alignment of text should be adjusted nicely and neatly. On the other hand, she also advised us to take note on the numbering and date added on caption so that it is more clearly stated and also this can proved that it is all our work. Specific Feedback: Overall type expressions are okay, only "illusion" can be improvised by eliminating the distort effect, only the question mark will be enough. Other than that, Ms Hsi Yin and Mr Vinod have also give me suggestions on animinating the type expression. Both of them suggest me to animate "shock" as it could have the most outstanding effect. Week 4 General Feedback: Everyone should upload their documents in JPEG form only whether it is for progression or other purpose. Only the final outcome required to be embeded in pdf form. Specific Feedback: The animation od the word "shock" should be continue to enlarge so that it has a shock effect. Ms Hsin Yin prefer the exclamation mark change from small to big but not from big to small. Overall the e-portfolio documentation process is good. Week 5 General Feedback: Everyone should complete their e-portfolio with all lectures summaries, final works and work documentation before the deadline. Specific Feedback: The headline of the exercise 2 text formatting layout should aligned with the body text below, which is flush right. | Week 6: General Feedbcak: Ms Hsin Yin advised us to hypernate the text and also make kerning to evert single line in a praragraph so that it looked more neat and aligned. Other than that, Ms Hsin Yin also checked on our e-portfolio of task 1 while the next day is the deadline. Specific Feedback: As the headline I chose is related to Bauhaus, Ms Hsin Yin suggest that I should use Futura Std typeface for the word "Bauhaus" in the headline. Ms Hsin Yin also mentioned that instead of the isosceles triangle, I should use equilateral triangle ot match with the "Bauhaus" concept. Week 7: General Feedback: Ms Hsin Yin has checked our blog for task 1 once again amd remind all of us that we should add our feedback in the google sheet as an back up for our blog, if not our marks will be deducted. Specific Feedback: Ms Hsin Yin has give me feedback that stated my e-portfolio for task 1 has already complete and updated. | W7 Task 1 updated | https://0354452.blogspot.com/search/label/Typography | F | limenyu1120@gmail.com

| 9 | LIM YU XUEN | 0359676 | Week 2 - Week 5 Week 2: General Feedback: For the E-portfolio, My Vinod mentioned that eht format of the blog should include a title, description, labels, break lines, and the content. Everyone must proceed with research, feedback, reflection and further reading. One more to note is that, type expressions should not include any graphic or drawing elements. ONLY create the type expression by using the 10 typefaces given. Specific Feedback: Ms Hsin Yin reminded me to complete my lecture notes in my E-portfolio. Besides that, I should have some drafts for my type expressions, to show process and get feedback and improve. Week 3: General Feedback: For the E-portfolio, everyone must remember to update it often. Type expressions should be digitalised already, and have to focus on animating it into short GIFS. Digitalised text expressions should be in black & white only. Specific Feedback: Ms Hsin Yin looked through my draft sketches for the text expressions, she mentioned to not use special characters such as ü. She also recommended me to make a few changes in my text expressions, and reminded me to digitalise my text expressions as soon as possible. Complete work in a faster pace. Week 4: General Feedback: Update blog every week, make sure to add enough frames so that GIF looks smooth when played. Specific Feedback: Ms Hsin Yin recommended to try to make the GIF smoothly without any distortion on the font. Can start on fixing my GIF. Week 5: General Feedback: Update blog by next week, complete Task 2 Type Expression, and export in different formats. Specific Feedback: Ms Hsin Yin mentioned to add more frames into my GIF. She also helped me with making minor changes on my text expression "Illusion". | Week 6: General Feedback: Make sure that the blog for task 1 is updated fully before the deadline given which is in 1st November. One more thing to take note is to avoid orphans, make sure the paragraph does not leave a word at the end. Specific Feedback: Ms Hsin Yin gave feedback on my GIF progress and recommended some changes to be made. She reminded me to update my blog regularly, and start progressing in Task 2. Week 7: General Feedback: Do not use italic for whole body text. Finalise and update blog by next deadline (next week) for submission of Task 2. Specific Feedback: Ms Hsin Yin has give stated that my e-portfolio for task 1 is updated and completed. | Week 8: Recess Week Week 9: Absent Week 10: General Feedback: Update Task 3 E-portfolio, continue to refine the letters. Everyone was required to complete a TES evaluation by today's class. Specific Feedback: Ms Hsin Yin recommended to ask for a MC letter from the clinic I visited in the morning. Besides that, she encouraged me to get my Task 3 digitalisation done. Week 11: General Feedback: Reduce the number of anchor points in letters to avoid making it hard to adjust the shape of the letter. Only put anchors on the core parts of the letter designs. Specific Feedback: Ms Hsin Yin recommended a few choices to change for my digitalised typeface. Some of the changes were to made was for the letter S, and letter N. Week 12: General Feedback: Follow the kerning guideline videos that were prepared for us. Observe the words closely and adjust the kerning so all letters are nicely fitted next to each letter. Specific Feedback: Decrease the kerning space between letter N because the left side looks further away to other letters and should be adjusted to make the kerning nicer and easier to read. | W2 Lectures incomplete. 20 | 12 | LIN SI YAN | 0369321 | Week 1: General feedback: Watch Type_0_Eportfolio Briefing video and create own e-portfolio. Use the default theme and font to edit at first, then open a private window to view the e-portfolio before submitting works to make sure it's formatted well. Week 2: General feedback: All the sketches are recommend to do in frames for better conceptions and expressions. Do put the descriptions and dates while completing the tasks. Specific feedback: Good sketches. Type Expression can be better, stay focus on typeface design instead of illustration. Chop: Word spacing is too far which lower the font recognition. Try to give the cut just a bit movement so it’s still recognise and can express “chop”. Windy: For design #1 and #2 have too much distort of letterforms, need to follow typeface. The #3 and #4 type expression are too straightforward. Dive: Design #2, #3, #4 are too illustrative, #1 would be better with the letter “i” tilted 45 degree. Huge: Nice sketches. #3 is big enough to barely fit in the grid. Except #3, the others’ type expression are not strong enough to express huge. Week 3: General Feedback: Remember to use a white background to export jpeg in Photoshop, and the resolution should be 72 ppi. For animation, 24 frames will be ideal to create a smooth transition. Specific feedback: Mr. Vinod likes one of the drafts on digitising the word Huge, which I used the font Gill Sans Std - Shadowed to design and it's one of my favourites too. In sum, I got same feedback from both lecturers. The final digitalisation of the words chop, windy and huge are fine, dive needs stronger expression. The idea of letter 'i' diving into letter 'V' is not bad though but staying default scale would be the first choice. The effect of wave used in 'DiVE' is not accurate actually since it isn't float but to dive in the water. Ms.Low also gives an idea to animate 'DiVE', let the letter 'i' dive to the bottom while the other letters change from normal to tilted. Week 4: General Feedback: Watch Text Formatting video tutorials then complete our task in Adobe InDesign. Specific feedback: Done checking the animation of word 'DiVE' and e-portfolio. Both well done. Week 5: General Feedback: Sketch various layouts and heading designs, select a specific word to emphasise expression. Assess the text flow in the document to determine the space required for harmony with the headings. Modify the guidelines, grids, and columns to create associates. Achieve a balance between text and white space. A better layout is a better design. Specific feedback: It is clean for layout #3. Layout #4 is suggested to be finalised instead of using the new layouts. It is recommend to duplicate the image to balance the spatial arrangement. Create shapes and use shortcut keys option 3 to hide words or shapes. | Week 6: General Feedback: Sketch various layouts and heading designs, select a specific word to emphasise expression. Achieve a balance between text and white space. A better layout is a better design. Specific feedback: It is clean for layout #3. Layout #4 is suggested to be finalised instead of using the new layouts. It is recommend to duplicate the image to balance the spatial arrangement. Week 7: General Feedback: Explore 3 different writing styles for each of the 3 pens. Do a detail dissection of the letters before started writing to gain a deeper understanding of the font's unique characteristics. Writing instead of drawing the letterforms. Specific feedback: Focus on the details, the outlines of word UNITE shouldn't over the tilted line. Place heading and adjusted rotation angle using InDesign to ensure the format is correct. | Week 9: General Feedback: Watch videos before digitising the letterforms. There are several ways to create letterforms by using shapes, strokes and brush. Understanding the evolution of typefaces is essential for us as we embark on the creation of new letterforms. Specific Feedback: Letterforms written at the same angle are good. The ideas like concave shapes and arrows are interesting, could try to merge these ideas to create a new type design. Before digitalising, remember to determine the width of letter. Focus on the details like a rounded arm/beak. The letter skeletons look good. We decided to proceed with digitising in uppercase letters as it offers better control. Week 10: General Feedback: Learn how to design punctuation signs through the Instagram post. The final digitalisation of the font in Illustrator will continue in FontLab next week. Ensure that the size of the artboard is set to 1000 points, and the x-height of the type is approximately 500 points. Specific Feedback: The new type design looks nice. The arrow design of letter "H" should have wider width and retain a level of concave. Letter "G" has to retain the concept and level of concave. Every letter should have a consistent width, and ensure that all the letterforms have a rounded transition. Week 11: General Feedback: Improve letter refinement through visuals to maintain consistency. Choose specific anchor points for minor adjustments. Keep letter heights below 1000 pt. Specific Feedback: Adjust the letters width, letters "L and E" are wider compared to letters "O and H". Ensure an even angle for the spine of letter S. Adjust the bar and serif of letters T and I. Adjust the thickness of strokes to maintain consistency. The punctuation marks look special with the concave characteristic. Week 12: General Feedback: Letters appear smoother with fewer anchor points. Reduce anchor points using Shift and minus key. Refer to the chart for side bearing measurement and adjust accordingly to the created font. Remember to name the font. Specific Feedback: The font's consistency is nice. Reduced anchor points before import to FontLab. Keep punctuation marks like comma and period simple. Experiment with different words to compare effectively while adjusting side bearing. Make the letter "O" a wider stroke. | W7 Task 1 updated | https://yannylin.blogspot.com/search/label/Typography | y0369321@gmail.com

| 14 | LIZZIE TANAKA | 0362065 | Week 2: General: picture should be clear, under sunlight. Sketch within an artboard, number them and give the date. Draw based on the 10 fonts. Specific: Sketch should be more precise according to the font. Week 3: General: Put figure (fig 1,2, etc), date, and clear explanation of idea on blog. Can already start writing reflection Specific: Make the letters come in the middle and then zoom in to the middle until it turns black to highlight the gaps of the word 'huge.' Overall so far so good Week 4: General: Don't embed pictures in google drive for progress photos and sketches, only for final results. Specific: So far so good, can cointinue to exercise 2 Week 5: General: The typeface that we choose for our text formatting should also be able to communicate the message of our content. Specific: Align the author name horizontally to the baseline of 'I AM' and vertically to the 'E' of 'Helvetica.' Maybe add a description to the image. It's a unique take on pushing the title almost out of the page. There are no orphans or widows, ragging is okay, everything is aligned well. | Week 6: General: Adding a subheading by changing font weight to a heavier one (categorizing each paragraph) can be effective in increasing readability. Do not use italic for everything (text) Specific: Make the subheading and the body text as if they are a paragraph, not a different paragraph. Other ideas suggested include making the headline more rigid in grids, and then putting the 'ON' under the 'i', and change the color to gray to contrast the words. Week 7: General: Don't use italics for all the text Specific: - | Week 7: General: Don't use italics for all the text, only for highlighting purposes Specific: - Week 8 (Independent Learning Week) General: - Specific: - Week 9 General: Remember to write the letters, not draw the letters Specific: Interesting sketch as I managed to explore different weights and different contrasts in strokes as well. Good in exploring the weights, expanded to condensed style, contrasting stroke (sketch). Make the alphabets more equal in size, explore condensed and expanded style, uppercase/lowercase. Week 10 General: Remember that your artboard should be 1000pt Specific: The letters should have a smoother transition and try to standardize the features of each character and the sizing too. Week 11 General: Put anchor points on the important parts, remove unnecessary anchor points to make it easier when editing. Specific: Counterforms need to be standardized in width and shape. Letter 't ' and 'l' might need to be more condensed. Letter 'l' should be narrower than 't' so adjust the 't' first. Week 12 General: Arranging the letters into a word can make it easier when adjusting the kerning. Specific: Letter 'D' and 'S' is wider than the other letters. The right corner of transition in 'S' is wider than the one on the left. Mr Vinod also suggested that the comma can be longer. Week 13 General: Use all letters in your font for the poster since the purpose is to promote your font Specific: The poster already looks good | W7 Task 1 updated | https://0362065.blogspot.com/search/label/Typography | F | lizzie.tanakaa@gmail.com

Week 4: General feedback: Include subpoints of what is to be added in reflections in e-portfolio. Week 3: General feedback: Include weekly feedback in e-portfolio. Specific feedback: The connecting points of my letterforms can be refined using the pen tool, Mr Vinod suggested making the typeface in my animation more exaggerated (pushing out of the square boundary). Week 2: General feedback: Further reading is compulsory every week, websites should be screengrabbed and book covers should be shown in the e-portfolio. Sections must always be segregated with horizontal lines. Sketches should be numbered, labeled, descibed and dated. Specific feedback: I relied mostly on pictorials, which is discouraged and instead should focus more on legibility when expressing the word in my typeface. Skewing my letters are not always necessary and some of my sketches could have more interesting compositions. Week 1: General feedback: E-portfolio should be organised and updated consistently, further reading is necessary every week alongside lectures. | Week 7: General feedback: Always make sure the google sheets feedback form is kept up to date with feedback everyweek. After finishing the type expression and formatting, it's recommended to print it out and check. Week 6: General feedback: Specific feedback: Can add emphasis to the last paragraph. The N seems a bit forceful. Can try using left justify instead of left alignment (look out for rivers).Resize and reposition the letters in the word 'BUILD' so it looks more uniform. 'A code to' is not suitable to be in italics, try book bold/heavy. | Week 13: General feedback: When showcasing typeface, it's reccommended to not use visual effects and additional graphics as it takes away from the craftmanship of the original type. We also need to include all the letterforms we made in the phrase we choose. Week 12: Specific feedback: As Mr Vinod passed by me and saw my poster, he told me to make the text size bigger as space is the biggest enemy. Week 11: Specific feedback: Ms Hsin said shortening the stems was a good desicion, as my letterforms look a lot more balanced now. She said due to the nature of my typeface, it is more suitable to maintain the irregularity of it. The stems of of letters are quite similar to each other, so she advised me to try and apply the same structure to my x-height letters, referencing the o (bowel, and stroke width that it bottom left heavy). My punctuations can be improved, with the dots being slightly bigger as they are less prominent, and my # to be more balanced by diminishing the narowness of the middle strokes. I could also add a tail to my t, as it is looking a bit more narrow compared to the other letterforms. Week 10: General feedback: Label baseline and grid lines. Week 9: General feedback: We should pay close attention to the correct letter anatomy of our sketched letters, such as strokes that extend past the x-height or baseline. Before sketching, we should draw guides (the baseline, x-height, ascender space, descender space etc.). Specific feedback: I preferred sketches 1, 2 and 12, but Ms Hsin was drawn to an unlabled experimental type I did derived from 2. So, I sketched out the lowercase of 2 and 12 and tried to make uppercase and lowercase derivatives of 2, incorporating the wiggly elements. Mr Vinod urged me to digitise the wiggly sketch as it was more interesting. They also pointed out that my lowercase t should be slightly shorter than the ascender height. | W7 Task 1 updated | https://0358458.blogspot.com/search/label/Typography | maisarahsufian2004@gmail.com

| 19 | MELVIN YUNG KHUN YEW | 0357241 | Week 2 General feedback: The overall design looks good! Specific feedback: Mr Vinod - The "Chop" word for the 4th design has too many distortions, try reducing the chop marks and also closing the gap between them. Ms Hsin Yin - The "Chop" word design for the 4th one works fine, just a bit too much distortion going on. - Compared to the other designs of the "Illusion" word, the 2nd design works the best among all the others. Especially on the 5th design, the design just suggests it is a shadow with no related meaning to the word, and it can be a little bit difficult to read. But it's a very good design of how the letters are put together. - "I like how the "y" of the "windy" word just lies on the floor. - For the "Dive word, it's smart to cut out the letter to represent the dive action. However, the "E" is cut a bit too much, resulting in the reader having a hard time reading the word. Next time try not to cut out too much the resembling shape of a letter such as "E", or "G", otherwise it will cause a reduction in the readability of the word. The 3rd design is viable, just a bit of manipulation is required. Place the "I" letter in the centre of the box to direct the focal point, and adjust all the letters to the same weight and size. Week 3 General feedback: E-portfolio: The overall portfolio looks great! Digitisation: Specific feedback: E-portfolio: You should also add labels under the image for the digitisation process work to allow easier reading and referencing. Digitisation: Increase the effect of diving by placing the letter V and E lower and closer to the bottom. Chop redesign Week 4 General feedback: Good progress and final work on the GIF animation Week 5 General feedback: The first and second sample of layout formatting seems doable, with the second one with staircase design been quite interesting Specific feedback: For the first sample, I see you have move the weight of the paragraph to the bottom of the page. But try to move the left side paragraph upwards to match the same weight of positive space and negative space between the image and body paragraph on the right side of the page. Move to the same line as the caption of the image. Or if you want to give the second layout design a try, enlarge the header and with a staircase feeling too to maintain equal positive and negative spaces. | Week 6 Specific feedback I like how you utilize the number to a letter in "Unite". The 1 represents the letter I which also stands for "one together" meaning. Working on layout 5, the lead-in line can be adjusted to have the same angle as the header. There are some alignments that can be made to fix the graphics. The inverted 3 here can show the letter E but somehow from "the better world", it can be easily read as "butter" instead of "better" from my perspective. However, it's worth noting that the 3 works fine too here to replace the E. Week 7: General Feedback Be careful not to use the italic style in a whole body text, especially in paragraphs. Moreover, be mindful of the little details in your work in the future. Specific Feedback: Week 8: No feedback - Independent learning week | Week 7 : General Feedback Be careful not to use italics in a whole body text, especially in paragraphs. Moreover, be mindful of the little details in your work in the future. Week 8: INDEPENDENT LEARNING WEEK Week 9: General Feedback For now, focus on exploring the writing and set aside the drawing part. Set baseline, height and x-height, ascender and descender space when writing letters. Specific Feedback Small details added to the font make it interesting. As from option 2, I can see it has some reference with the Blackletter font diamond style. Sometimes you can just copy a style from another font by just changing the type of the brush used to write it. Week 10: Specific Feedback Ms Hsin Yin - Well structured and nice consistency of the design style, but there are some problems with the hashtag bar (Try to move the upper bar right side and reduce the overall weight of the stroke.) Adjust the shoulder of the font Mr Vinod - Can you do me a favour? Increase the width of the upper part of the exclamation mark while maintaining the width of the lower part. Week 11: Specific Feedback The stem of the letter t seems too high, you may need to adjust it below the cap height. We tend to have an optical illusion of the strokes, where the thicker vertical stroke and thinner horizontal stroke can make the whole letter look more balanced than with the same width. The thick stroke of the exclamation mark makes it too prominent from the rest of the letter, slightly adjust the width of the stroke for better result. The hashtag symbol is a little high, you may need to adjust it so that the hashtag symbol matches the lowercase letters, be wary of the fact that there is a thing called contextual alternates. You can access it in Adobe Illustrator in the OpenType section of Type Window. Week 12: General Feedback When importing the fonts to FontLab, make sure the letter is merged together in Illustrator. | W7 Task 1 updated | https://0357241melvinyung.blogspot.com/search/label/Typography | melvinyungkw@gmail.com
