Mrs OkeAnyone taking a walk near a streamhttps://scistarter.org/stream-selfieStream Selfie What’s in YOUR water? We all have the right to know if the streams running through our backyards and neighborhood parks are safe. But there is an alarming lack of up-to-date information about water quality across the country. Stream Selfie is here to bridge that information gap.

Stream Selfie connects you with thousands of other citizen scientists to paint a picture of streams across America. Simply snap a pic of your local stream and share it here.

Your photo is step one in our effort to check the health of every stream in the country – far more streams than state and local agencies have the resources to check!

Mrs OkeAnyone without a bee allergy.https://scistarter.org/zombee-watchZomBee Watch is a citizen science project that needs your help to learn if and where honey bees are being taken over by the zombie fly. This project is kind of gross (which is what makes it more interesting) but honey bees are so important that we thought it was worth it!

To do this project, you'll need to collect and observe a bee, following instructions found on the website.

This project might take one day (if you don't find any bees) or up to 30 days if you do find a bee. That's typically how long it will take for a pesky zombie fly to spring to life from it's poor host the honey bee.

Mrs OkeAnyone taking a walkhttps://scistarter.org/nasa/globe-observer-mosquitoVolunteers around the world use mobile devices to hunt and collect data on mosquitoes that serve as vectors for disease? Using NASA's GLOBE Observer Mosquito Habitat Mapper (GO Mosquito) app. You will locate and map locations of breeding sites, and get points for decommissioning container habitats so that mosquito larvae don’t develop into adult disease vectors. Besides promoting the collection of critical data for use by scientists and health officials, GO Mosquito fosters understanding of the importance of personal action in reducing the local risk of vector-borne disease.

Mrs OkeAt home or on a walk in your neighborhood.https://scistarter.org/project-squirrelProject Squirrel is calling all citizen scientists of all ages to count the number of squirrels in their neighborhoods and report their findings. The goal is to understand tree squirrel ecology. Some neighborhoods may have grey (and “black” squirrels, which are almost always grey squirrels!), fox, and red squirrels while a nearby town only has one species. In many places, it seems one species or another is becoming more common. Learn how to identify these three tree squirrels then report your observations about their presence or absence and some of the ecological conditions of your neighborhood.

Mrs OkeGarden Club & anyone curious about plant growth.Email Mrs Oke roke@wcpss.netLearn how to grow your own vegetables from kitchen scraps. Let's find out if these scenarios you see on line really work to grow your own onions, peppers, tomatoes, almost from almost anything you buy from the grocery store or farmer's market. Let's document and share our successes.
