TitleSTORIED STANCE: AN ORAL HISTORY OF LONG-TERM TEACHER RESEARCHERS IN THE AGE OF ACCOUNTABILITYUNDERSTANDING PROFESSIONAL LEARNING IN ACTION: A CASE STUDY OF A RESEARCH-BASED PROFESSIONAL LEARNING PROGRAMHELPING TEACHERS IN A HIGH POVERTY SCHOOL MOVE FROM A DEFICIT TO AN ASSET ORIENTATION THROUGH PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENTA Case Study of Teachers’in Professional Learning Communities in a Campus PreschoolPreservice Teachers Engaged in Professional Learning Communityto Explore Critical Literacy

Focus AreaMore specifically, this study asks: 1) What dispositions enable educators to maintain an inquiry stance? and 2) What sociopolitical and/or institutional features promote and inhibit inquiry as stance?the study explores the following research questions: 1)How do strategies designed to decrease deficit perspectives and increase an asset orientation impact the self-reported beliefs and practices of teachers working in ahigh poverty school?2)How does working with teachers to examine deficit perspectives and asset orientations impact my perspectives and practices as a school administrator?questions guided this study: (1) How do elementary PSTs engaged in practitioner inquiry make meaning of critical literacy instruction within a facilitated learning community?(2) How do PSTs enact critical literacy instruction in the field experience elementary classroom while engaged in practitioner inquiry in a facilitated learning community?(a) What facilitates PSTs as they enact critical literacy instruction in the elementary field experience classroom?(b) What inhibits PSTs as they enact critical literacy instruction in the elementary field experience classroom?

FindingsPre-service teachers should experience the impact and value of inquiry as a stance. Experienced edcucatos practicing inquiry as a stance should povide support to those just beginning and help remove barriers. Professional development addressing defieict thinking, teaching CRT, embedding concepts from appreciative inquiry could be leveraged to decrease deficit thinking and mitigate it's impact on student learning.PSTs were able to make better sense of critical literacy through our PLC. As these PSTs made sense of critical literacy, Jodi and Tira enacted critical literacy successfully in their primary grade classrooms.

Thoughts about how findings are organizedI appreciate that the implications were broken down into categories - teacher, teacher educator, and historian. Examining the impact of inquiry as a stance across these situations provided insight into its importance across the various professional stages educators experience.Looking at the shift in deficit thinking through the processes of Self-Efficacy, Relationship-Building, and Reframing makes it easier to see how shifts were inspired. It allows for a more detailed examination of the process becuase understanding how changes happened in these areas is more concrete than simply looking for a shift in deficit thinking. These ideas provide benachmarks against which behaviors can be assessed. A Model for Restructuring PST Teacher Learning / Implications for Teacher Education : Literacy coursework/Field supervisors/Professional learning community/Collaborating teachers I appreciate the implications were grouped so they addresses multiple elements of the systems in which PST function. Supporting the development of strong critical literacy skills and the confidence to implement critical literacy while implementing elementary grade level standards requires multiple supports and entry points into the work. Giving PSTs a strong foundation that allows them to confidently implement critical literacy can help them oversome many of the limiting factors discussed in this dissertation.

Questions about dissertationWhile six teachers were selected to particpate in the study how many teachers total work at the school site? Do you think there would have been a difference in the degree of freedom participants felt in writing their responses if there had been a greater chance of anonimity in the survey process?I'm fascinated by the number of topics and subtopics listed in the Table of Contents. Were you concerned that having so many would make it more difficult to manage the dissertation? I'm still struck by the number and length of section titles in the Table of Contents.

Other commentsI am intrigued by the number of Literature Reviws that appeared in the Table of Contents. It was interesting to see this dissertation leverage Lit Reviews beyond the early chapters of the work.Adults are prinarily responsilbe for the learning that happens in a building. This is powerful and shifting to this rather than viewing children as wholly accountable for their academic succes or failure would have a tremendous impact on the way teachers viewed the art of teeaching. Teaching is not telling. Would love to integrate the asset orientation survey and a discussion of asset vs. deficit based thinking into the New Teacher Ethics course we are working on for our PD project. A one paragraph conclusion...not sure I could be that bold. From the introduction - "You watched me spend endless hours with my computer over you and did not complain at all." This really speaks to me this week especially there's something comforting about seeing someone validate and acknowledge the sacrifices our families make as we pursue our doctorate. That's one detailed Table of Contents.

Questions, Comments after viewing PPT presentationProgression of Teacher Practice would make an interesting self-rating scale for teachers. It would be interesting to construct a version that could be administered to students to then compare the teacher's self-rating with that of the students to identify potential gaps in perception.Data Collection slide that aligned each research question with the resources used to address the question was fantastic. I think that creating a similar chart during the drafting process will help me in several ways. First, it will allow me to sort resources broadly based on their presumed usefulness to addressing the question. As I dive further into the resources their usefulness can be assessed and any that don't address the particular RQ can be eliminated.
