Anaheim Union High School District9/7/2024AnaheimCAIn June 2023, Anaheim Union High School District published the AUHSD AI Framework, a “comprehensive approach to AI education that aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, ethics, and workforce readiness required to thrive in a world with AI.”

The district uses the LMS platform eKadence, which “streamlines lesson planning and student data analysis for teachers, offers personalized learning and AI tutoring for students, and optimizes data analysis and communication for administrators.” In Spring 2024, teachers in AUHSD piloted Scrappy, a chatbot and virtual tutor built into eKadence. The goal is to roll out Scrappy to the entire district in fall 2024.

AUHSD provides AI resources as part of the website for the K-12 AI Summit discussed below.

AUHSD offers an AI CTE Pathway, and its Career Preparedness Systems Framework offers career pathways and internships in AI, biotechnology, and cybersecurity. Coursework related to AI (e.g., coding and robotics) starts in middle school.

AUHSD has also initiated hands-on internship and mentoring experiences for students with AI. For instance, the Anaheim’s Innovative Mentoring Experience (AIME) program worked with eKadence to create a project for AUHSD high school students to help build an AI chatbot. Previously, in 2021, AUHSD created an AI internship program for students to increase career-readiness with Loko AI, an area technology firm.

In March 2024, AUHSD spearheaded a K-12 AI Summit in Anaheim that explored ways of integrating AI into K-12 experiences for students and teachers alongside education, policy, philanthropy, and industry leaders.

Iowa City Community School District9/5/2024Iowa CityIAThe Iowa City Community School District updated its 2024-25 Online Student Handbook with permitted and prohibited AI use cases. The district adopted the Artificial Intelligence in the Education Environment Regulation policy, which includes guidelines for AI tool adoption. These guidelines were based on recommendations from an AI task force it convened over 2023-24, representing students, administrators, support staff, and community members. The school board has approved a timeline for reviewing and improving new artificial intelligence policies by November 2024. The district is convening an AI Champion Group in 2024-25 to inform ongoing district AI guidance, test the district's draft AI guidelines in select classes/grades, roll out a new AI tool-vetting process, and deepen partnerships with support organizations like Digital Promise.

In 2023-24, the district tested its software vetting process by having some teachers pilot MagicSchool.

In 2024-25, Iowa City CSD will be implementing a new curriculum teaching students how to "safely use AI," with age-appropriate lessons required by the school board. The district also offers quarter-long electives on AI for students in grades 7 and 8.

Iowa City Schools offers its educators an AI in EDU Cohort that leverages “a combination of both synchronous and asynchronous learning to identify, investigate, select, implement and reflect on AI in EDU.”

Mesquite Independent School District9/3/2024MesquiteTXMesquite Independent School District does not appear to have published new, formal artificial intelligence guidance, but its 2024-25 Student Handbook acknowledges unauthorized use as a component of plagiarism.

Mesquite co-developed the AI-enabled program AYO in partnership with Google and SoftServe. AYO integrates data from test scores, grades, attendance, and extracurriculars with student interest data (collected via student surveys, teacher observations, student assignments, and student web searches) to identify student passions and strengths. It provides students, teachers, and parents with access to this data and helps teachers design individualized learning plans that emphasize student interests and strengths. It also collects daily student well-being data and alerts school site counselors and parents to students that indicate need for mental health and/or social and emotional support. Students can use the tool to learn about extracurriculars and sign up for new clubs. The district is expanding its AYO pilot to 13 schools in 2024-25.

Mesquite provides educators and parents access to AYO online resources. It provides AI-related professional learning courses for educators on AI classroom best practices and utilizing AI tools for differentiating instruction in their classrooms. The courses are called AI for Beginners and Differentiation with AI.

Ypsilanti Community Schools9/12/2024YpsilantiMIYpsilanti Community Schools does not appear to have issued any new, formal AI guidance.

Ypsilanti approved the roll out of AI-enabled tools like ChatGPT and Gemini (formerly Google Bard) in 2023-24. Its English Learner Department has utilized these tools to translate and enhance the vocabulary for lesson materials across multiple languages. Teachers also can access Roadmaps, a digital education platform developed by the University of Michigan that "uses AI-technology to automate the process of sharing information amongst students and other teachers."

The district also provides parents access to a digital chatbot named Grizzly, which can answer "frequently asked questions" about the district in 100 languages. It is intended to streamline communication to answer questions that do not need personal assistance.
