Important notes for -20 Freezers:

Most laboratories find that residential freezers suit their needs unless they are storing flammables or samples that need a very specific and tight temperature range.

Laboratories save thousands of dollars purchasing domestic units over laboratory grade units.

For labs with samples sensitive to temperature changes, such as enzymes, choose manual defrost units.

The Center for Energy Efficient Laboratories (CEEL), of which My Green Lab is a founding member, has recently published a comprehensive report on -20C laboratory-grade freezers with the support of the California utility companies. I'm really excited to share this information with you as our findings were not what we expected.

The main takeaway from this report is that the -20C freezer product category is actually comprised of two different types of freezers, one that uses very little energy (1-2 kWh/day), which we've termed 'General Purpose' [GP] and one that uses a lot more energy (7-15+ kWh/day), which we've termed 'Enhanced General Purpose' [EGP]. These freezers have different applications, so it's not as if all the high energy consumers can be replaced with the low energy consumers, but it is the case that not everyone who buys an EGP freezer needs something that fancy. At the moment, we have not been able to identify any energy-efficient EGP freezers. Given how much energy an EGP uses, it is really important that people maintain these freezers properly.
