Data Dictionary - Relational Dataset and Database Information
9
Relational Database Information
10
A relational database is a set of datasets which are connected to each other through primary keys and foreign keys. On NYC Open Data, datasets that can be joined this way are grouped together in a "dataset collection."

If this dataset cannot be joined to other datasets, then the data dictionary template for individual datasets is used instead of this document.

Database Name
Name of the relational database or dataset collection.

Database Description
Overview of the relational database or dataset collection that explains how the individual datasets are related.
This data collection consists of the natural turf maintenance and natural turf site list.

Each row is a unique entry recording the natural turf maintenance performed at a specific NYC Parks turf site on a specific day and time. Each row is a turf site and its Service Level Agreement (SLA) as of a specific date. A unique turf site may have multiple rows if the SLA changes over time.

No new data will be generated between the end of the season (mid-October) and the start of a new season (May). Sites can be added or removed from the turf site list throughout a season as needed. A site's SLA may also be updated mid-season.

Dataset Description
Overview of the information this dataset contains, including overall context and definitions of key terms. This field may include links to supporting datasets, agency websites, or external resources for additional context.
From May to mid-October, Parks performs routine natural turf maintenance across the city's parks. Natural turf is any lawn area consisting of non-synthetic grass that must be mowed on a regular basis. A park or park zone that includes sites with lawn areas large enough to require the use of mowing equipment is considered a 'turf site'. There can be multiple turf sites within a given park. There are three types of maintenance done at these sites: lawn mowing, trimming lawn edges, and blowing away clippings and debris that occurred during the mowing and trimming.

At the start of each day, crews receive an assignment designating which sites to visit and what work needs to be done at that site (in the data, this assignment is referred to as the "assigned tasks").

At the conclusion of each site visit, a staff member is responsible for completing a survey that confirms what work was and was not completed. This data set is the compilation of those survey responses.
A natural turf site is a park or park zone that contains an area that requires turf maintenance. There can be multiple turf sites within a given park. This dataset contains all sites that are considered a natural turf site within NYC Parks.
23
Why is this data collected?
Purpose behind the collection of this data, including any legal or policy requirements for this data by NYC Executive Order, Local Law, or other policy directive.
This data is collected to establish a record of the work completed and to ensure that each turf site is receiving the level of maintenance it has been assigned. This dataset is collected to establish an authoritative list of sites that need to be mowed on a routine basis during the natural turf season.
24
How is this data collected?
The methods used to create and update this dataset, including what cleaning or processing was involved prior to dataset publication.
If data collection includes interpreting physical information this field includes tehcnical details.
If data collection includes fielding applications, requests, or complaints, this field includes details about the forms, applications, and processes used
.
The survey is submitted via a mobile application by Parks staff. Each borough is responsible for maintaining a list of sites that require routine mowing throughout the natural turf season. Each borough's list is combined to form this dataset.
25
How can this data be used?
Examples of and/or links to projects or agency operations that have used this dataset.
Where relevant, includes links to online projects, agency websites, visualizations, maps, or dashboards.
What are some questions one might answer using this dataset?
This data can be used to see what turf maintenance work is completed at each site, and when. This dataset can be used to determine which NYC Parks sites receive turf maintenance during the season and how often turf maintenance should occur for that site based on the assigned service level agreement (SLA).
26
What are the unique characteristics or limitations of the data?
Unique characteristics of this dataset to be aware of, specifically, constraints or limitations to the use of the data.
This dataset may not include data on every park in the NYC Parks system in a given year due to the evolving nature of the list of sites that are tracked. Data is only collected about turf maintenance of lawn areas large enough to require the use of mowing equipment. Changes that may impact the availability of data may include construction, lawn restoration, and maintenance performed by partner organizations. This dataset only includes sites with lawn areas large enough to require the use of mowing equipment.

The history of SLAs are captured starting in 2024.

SLAs may change during the season due to factors such as ballfields being used for seasonal sports leagues or a reassessment of maintenance needs.Turf sites can be added or removed throughout the season.
