This is a con for the favorites. Unless you are the crowd favorite, they are pretty straight forward with bee-lining straight past your table. Although it is labeled as a Sherlock convention, it felt more LGBTQ+ and Doctor Who than Sherlock. Because it's such a close con to my house, I'd go again some day. Possibly.

Yes, but only if they're local.
A-kon moved to a new date and venue this year and was under new management. The venue was Fair Park, and it sucked. People bought a lot and were engaged in AA probably because it was hot outside and there was nothing else to do. It just wasn't a very conventional anime con this year so I feel like it was a fluke to do so well?

I didn't know what to expect this year because many people had concerns with the change of ownership and location to Fair Park. I ended up doing much better than last year and had great engagement with returning customers. They cut the number of artists from 360ish to 200 this year which I believe helped a lot.

Akicon's date was moved at the very last possible moment, from October to January. Attendance was extremely low, and it seemed like people were not there to shop, just grab handfuls of business cards and cruise past the tables.

Despite the small town, small show, and small attendance, the organizers know their stuff and are extremely accommodating. They love creators coming to their small town and take good care of us (and then take us to summer camp for the weekend!)

Alaska Robotics is an odd one in that theyre a community event! The con was one day of a week-long thing that included teaching classes, camping with cartoonists, and being taken to dinner. The con day was very unique in that it was free and in a high school gym, but everyone in Juneau showed up!

Several artists, not myself, were forced to move to spaces they did not pay for as the con reserved those spots for their guests who they want to keep coming back. this con is first come first pick. roughly 4-10 artists had been removed from the locations they paid for and were told to either settle for a different spot or to go home without a refund.

I have staffed this convention before and have friends on current staff; overall, the con was a shit show on the staff front this year, and the con chairs were running the show nearly single handedly. However, from the perspective of the artist, i didnt see many issues bleed through that they were at fault for. Nearly all of the other artists I spoke to were having a rough time with sales, and I think a lot of that has to do with the acceptance of many more artists than usual, without a noticeable increase in attendees. I did hear complaints from other artists about a lack of signage and direction to the artist alley, which i would agree with, but i firmly believe that this wasnt a change that will be consistent. the staff changes every year, and to my knowledge the problem people are being addressed.

The ALA should be about connecting, especially with comic editors and publishers, and this year was supposed to be their graphic novel year. However, there was almost no engagement with the editors (if they were even around), and the artists were all the way in the very back away from everything. Even with a free table (artists can get a free table if they submit a piece of artwork to the show for an auction) I lost over $1300, and nothing has come of any of the publicity and give away items I prepared for librarians, publishers, and editors.

The staff is great, hands down. However, this con had such little attendance, I think it should've been one day con than a three day con. But even with the small attendance, the con attendees were interested in buying.

The biggest con is that the artist alley hours on Fri and Sun are brutally long if you're tabling solo (10am to 10pm). but otherwise Boston is a great city and people seem very eager to look around and buy at this con - maybe people were trying to hurry to stop by the convention before Easter weekend festivities, but I wasn't expecting to have so many sales opening on the first day and running out of merch!

This was my first year at ACEN and I was pretty underwhelmed sales-wise. I did solidly, it was worth my time, but only because I could cut travel costs. Dunno, I was expecting Big Anime Con sales and I got... decent local show sales this year. I even got a good spot; I was in the well-lit portion of the alley with lots of traffic, others weren't so lucky. I'd only return if I was local, personally.

The check-in process was very quick, but not secure at all. They literally just ask for your table number and you were given your badges and information without seeing any identification or anything. Other then that it was a decent con.

This year there were some issues with the lineups on Day 1 but they seemed to improve by the next day. Volunteers would check seller's permit almost every day which I don't mind, but I recall them not doing it in previous year(s). I can't say that this is 'the best' con profit-wise as I have done a similar profit at other cons that span 3 days instead of 4. Overall still had a very good time.

staff is very strict if your table display is even 1 inch too high from the limit. If you happen to have a following on social media or already do well at other big anime conventions, you'll probably do well at AX, esp if you're at the front half of the artist alley. If you don't, it's not impossible to do decent, but the AA is one of the largest in North America and it's packed with so much talent, so keep in mind it's also extremely competitive, and attendees even seem picky with their money as it costs them a lot to fly out here. Organization-wise, the lines just to get into the convention somehow got way worse this year - it took artists and exhibitors over an hour just to get thru the "priority entrance" on the first day. Additionally, I don't know why one of my friends was specifically told by staff she was no longer allowed to eat at her table on day 3 due to some janitorial situation she did not cause, yet other artists weren't told the same?

Apparently this year in particular (or so I've heard) was really hectic security-wise and since it's my only year exhibiting I think I would want to exhibit a few more years before really recommending or not recommending a show.

Lines were insane, crowding was also insane, but that does also mean there were a lot more people to buy merch, right? So I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it as of right now.

There were an insane amount of credit card sales also. I don't exhibit very often (this AX was my 3rd time tabling ever) and when I do I go to small local cons where cash is the most common transaction.

I also think I could have done a lot better had I catered to wider audiences since a good chunk of my merch was Granblue Fantasy.

That's about it :)

AX has gotten very competitive as many industry standard artists are coming to ax. This year I think they had issues with lines and getting people in the venue. Which was probably why beginning of the days were slower than usual. Also with the earthquake happening at the same time with 100,000+ people at one place it was kind of a mess.

AX is extremely competitive to get into, and it's really busy with lots of great artists. However, a lot of people have high success here if they can get a table. Line organization and security needs a lot of work - half the vendors couldn't get to their table on time on the first day of the con due to excessive lines. AA staff is very strict with table height & checking for seller's permits, every. day.

This is a very expensive show to attend so I generally wouldn't recommend this to be your first show, but if you have experience with conventions, this is a great show! The con security was a bit rough this year and I heard stories of other artists not being able to get through. The first day started off very slow because attendees weren't getting in.

I made relatively the same at every con I went to this season (all Texas based) but A-fest is unique because it has about half, to one third the attendees of the other cons. Less people, but dedicated people who will spend. Con staff were a bit late on the map this year, but good as always. Monday isn't really worth it as a seller, but you contractually have to do it per their rules (or might get banned).

So much bad. This show over-inflates it’s numbers because it is part of a larger thing called Asian American Expo. There is something also going on at the same time called Blushcon. The amount of people actually there for Anime Impulse is small. Reception was so bad in the hall that I lost sales because I had to go cash-only— it was the same for a lot of people regardless of phone carrier. Lots of empty artist tables which is never good for sales. Artist Alley was in the same hall as a bunch of food vendors and groceries. Security was almost non-existent. Just too much to say.

it was a super chill con with the american asian expo, lots of amazing food (despite the high price). The demographic is a lot more diversified compare to a normal anime convention because of this. I know alot of people who did not do well at this con, but I did decent because I think of the "cute style" merch I had.
Getting to the con / venue was kind of confusing for me with the parking and everything.

Zero space between AA tables, they were edge-to-edge like a cafeteria. Also so labels or numbers on the tables, you just had to count the tables and hope you read the map correctly. They never actually told us what loading dock to use, luckily it was easy to find. Also no option to buy helper badges, you just had to buy a normal badge and stand in line (which had a 2-hour wait, because they didn't mail any badges). There was no info about badge pick-up beforehand. Luckily, another artist pointed me to the show office, where we could pick up badges. There, I asked about helper badges, and they informed me that my helper could go to the priority line to avoid the wait (more info that would've been useful beforehand). Once set-up was done, however, I didn't really have any issues, and I had a pretty successful show.

Staff are known to be mean and strict here but we didn't run into any issues at all! They did come around to check on tables / badges multiple times though. I noticed police presence at the con this year so hopefully that helped from last year's thefts. This year we also weren't allowed to use freestanding displays behind our table so a lot of people were either using the grid cages, pvc, or .. putting the photo backdrop displays directly on the table as if that's less dangerous.

For the third year of a con, Anime NYC 2019 was phenomenal. I have been told that this can be chalked up to the amazing team that puts on the show and their prior experience with other con management. These are the ups and downs of this year compared to last year, though: Last year, people reported having trouble finding Artists Alley upstairs in a separate level of the Javitts Center, and within that, finding artists due to the odd T shape of the room. This year, people reported having trouble finding Artists Alley downstairs in the main event hall with all the other vendors and exhibitors all together. There wasn't a clear delineation of space in this open floor plan warehouse-like space, and I think it all could have been solved by more maps placed around the hall, more signage, and colorful markings (tape on the floor, floating signs/balloons, for example) delineating the space between sections. As it was, it was not only totally overwhelming visually, but could be hard to distinguish where AA ended and the vendor booths began, especially with the availability of premium AA booths this year, which had more space but were easy to confuse with vendors. It's also my understanding that the amount of artists was doubled this year, making it nearly impossible for regular con goers to make more than one lap around AA, which is often the plan when you want to see everything before buying. Even though I had upped my game on my products this year, I believe the stiff competition with such a huge number of other vendors was what kept me at the same level of sales this year. Additionally, they had a great load-in solution where you could drive your vehicle basically right up to the door, and staff would help you load in if they were available for it. This could have been improved (and was improved by necessity during load-out) by opening up the off-street taxi area to vendors during this time, as space at the front door was extremely limited. Load out was insane, and I was able to get a security guard to let me use the taxi stand for load out due to the crazy traffic issues it was causing. One last huge issue to me was that AA was located in the back, so artists had to pass all of the exhibitors in order to enter and exit. During break-down, this became a huge hazard as exhibitors were operating forklifts that blocked whole aisles, loading palettes that blocked whole aisles, and otherwise making it difficult to exit. Beware and send someone to get a vehicle before you even finish breaking down if you are taking your own vehicle! This is something that the otherwise extremely helpful and thoughtful staff could help direct as well. Having my own vehicle, despite the parking fees, was worth it for Friday and Saturday just due to the amount of stuff I was carrying, but otherwise, this can be a very difficult con to get to and from unless you have help and extreme efficiency. Now that I'm out of state, I think I should probably not try it again due to the travel expenses, but it's absolutely great for people who live in and around the city.

Set up times in contract were changed LAST MINUTE giving us only an hour to set up when we were planning on 4. Easily could have notified us in time to set up the night before. They did get us in half hour earlier but the lack of planning was still very disappointing. This show might be fine if you're local and it takes you 10 minutes total to set up and tear down but other than that the sales will NOT even cover your effort. That being said, attendees were great and didn't complain at ALL about our higher priced items, it's just that none of them had any money to spend. College students is a poor target market for artists.

If you haven't heard about what went down this year, I'd highly look it up. Among other things, they kicked out an artist bc she noticed the wrong table sized was listed on the site as opposed to what she paid for. This was about a week before the con, and as of a week after (when I am writing this) she still has not received her refund. I will not be returning to the con next year.

It's old news to us here in Vancouver, but some of the higher-ups in the organization of this con are a little...morally questionable. Won't go into it, but thought I'd bring this up as a footnote since there was a fairly big incident this year.

There was a snow storm on the day of the convention, so there was less people than usual.

Cell service was literally nonexistent for 99% of the vendors. Almost everyone was having to take payments offline and a handful of attendees were taking advantage of that, so we only found out their cards were declined long after they were gone with their product. I found out this terrible cell service is neither the fault of the convention or the convention center, the area itself literally doesn't have enough cell towers to accommodate AWA.

Artist Alley was in the unsecured main hallway with no assigned tables. There was a locked room with about 6 tables to pick from, but it was strangely out of the way and people kept skipping it unintentionally.

Despite the attendance being more in the mid-size con range, this con puts a big emphasis on the artist alley, and attendees are here to shop! I brought way more product than I normally would for a con of this size based on a friend's advice and I'm glad I did. Normally my original designs sell only sporadically at cons in comparison to fan art, but I was selling out of both original and fan art designs on day 1! The fourth selling day seems like a waste though. I made $500 on Monday (I made at least $1.7K every other day) because there just weren't many people who bothered to stay. It would make sense if Monday was a holiday, but with school in session...what's the point?

It did seem like the attendees browsing the artist alley were mainly young teens/young adults, and I overheard many people at my table discussing how they had very little money to spend.

I was very surprised at how well I did at this show. I will say the Saturday hours were quite long (10 hours), and there were long periods of inactivity over the whole weekend. For me & my friends who went, it seemed like there was a large rush over a couple hours, then a few hours of nothing, like that for the whole weekend. It was a bit cramped (artist tables were back-to-back), but I was still able to fit a photo stand behind my table without disturbing our behind-neighbors too much. (However, keep in mind, this does mean YOUR table space will be fairly cramped)

In previous years this show (and its sister show Metacon) have been okay to bad. I don't know what was in the water this year, but sales were fantastic. Even the staff seemed to be upgraded and were helpful and professional. That said- the show-runner is still an absolute douche-trumpet, so only do these shows if you... don't have a choice really, like me. And lots of other MN artists. Sadly.

This was my first time tabling at an anime con, so I wasn't sure what to expect. From what I've heard, I did better than most people. Most of the attendees seemed younger, and my buttons - which are my lowest priced item - were my best sellers. I had also paid for a premium table, which was $25 more than a standard table, and it was absolutely not worth it. Even though I did comparatively well, my placement was awful, with most attendees not noticing my table until their third or fourth time walking around. I might still table again next year only because my sister is local and it's an excuse to hang out with her, but I would recommend Animore only if you're local and also maybe if you split a table.
