1 | **4.20.21** This document is a growing list of cognates, words that novice language learners rely heavily on whenever available. Considering the English vocabulary of a typical high school learner (i.e. more limited vocabulary of non-native, less-privileged English speakers with lower literacy rates, or kids who just don't read much at home), some of these will be less-clear than others. I've removed the "potentially not in learner's vocabulary" note since every cognate is individual-dependent anyway. This list remains a collection of fairly clear to super clear cognates. We'd love to find more of the latter, but of course, all of these increase the likelihood of Latin being understood. Thank you for contributing where you can (and please follow style, formatting, and adding words to appropriate tabs), and make use of this list in an effort to make Latin more comprehensible for your learners! N.B. As long as a dictionary entry includes a matching cognate at least once in the list of meanings, it's here (e.g. convertere to mean "convert" despite the primary meaning of convertere is "turn around/reverse"). - Magister P | ||||||
