 | What events or initiatives helped you to build relationships with school band directors and students? |
 | Community Band, side-by-side concerts, clinics, community school of music |
 | Started a non-competitive Concert Band Festival to help bands prepare for their state assessment with feedback from guest clinicians. Brought the area’s District Honor Band event to campus and helped offset the cost for the district. Lots of school visits and helping out where I can :) |
 | Side by side concerts with shared pieces and in-depth rehearsal clinics… not just a one-off, but building a stronger relationship |
 | Personalized Invites, Serving on State Board, Developing Summer Camps |
 | I host six bands across two days for contest prep. The band directors work together to coach each other, and the players listen to the other two clinics. |
 | I started a community youth wind ensemble and reached out to every director within 60 miles of my school. I started with a 5 minute meeting with schools to talk about the ensemble. Countless high school directors mentioned they had never had a college professor visit their school and how much they appreciated that. In 2 years that has turned into much better relationships with the community and growing numbers in the youth ensemble. |
 | Started a summer music camp program to give students in our area some one on one instruction and the opportunity to continue playing over the summer. Local band directors and programs can benefit from their students improving through this summer music camp. Also, events on campus - Band Day (marching band), invite bands on campus for them to prepare for contest, etc. |
 | We do a program called Friday Night Lights, where we send small groups of students out on Friday nights to play at high school football games! We’re selective of these games to be respectful of their time, but we rotate between as many different schools as possible, including all school types and sizes! Our students play with the home band for the first half and the away band for the second half, playing their music, doing their dances, and cheering for their teams. When halftime comes, we cheer from the sidelines and are the biggest band fans!! It gives us a chance to connect with directors, support what they do, and take an opportunity to engage with their community. The students receive service hours for their work (if they need them), and REALLY love it. The directors we play with absolutely love it, and it provides a lot of collaborative opportunities after our appearance at FNL! We don’t go to recruit, we go to support what they do and show their students they can keep loving what they do after they leave high school. |
 | Positive experiences on campus with ensemble director, campus visits, conductor of local youth orchestra, music audition day that includes a massed welcome session with prospective students; honor band and orchestra hosted on campus, alumni getting secondary teaching positions in the service areas, band festival with an extended clinic, music major for a day, inviting highly school students to sit in on band/orchestra and inviting the ones that can hang to be a member of the group, positive comments on adjudication recorded verbal comments addressed to the students (“hey remember to thank your wonderful director”) |
