Fri 3 January 2020134 Greylag and 23 Canada Geese plus an hybrid, 3 Mandarins, 5 Shoveler, drake Gadwall, 6 drake Pochard, 5 Goldeneye, 12 Goosander during the day while 44 roosted, nothing special in the gull roost though 687 Herring Gulls were counted with many birds still arriving late on.

34 Pinkfeet flew SE at 0945, drake Gadwall, 41 Teal, 2 Shoveler, 11 Pochard, 4 Goldeneye, 13 Goosander, 16 Grey Herons, 5 GCGrebes, Water Rail, c180 Lapwings. A Dipper flew south down the reservoir across the front of the Member’s Hide, a fairly unusual but not unprecedented sighting here, birds frequenting the River Amber above and below Ogston.

The 1stW Iceland Gull was in the roost again tonight, seen intermittently since 4 Jan, this bird has probably been present most nights but coverage of the roost isn’t what it used to be. Also 13 Greylags, drake Shoveler, 21 Mallard, 5 Gadwall, 36 Teal, 23 Tufteds, 5 Pochard, 5 Goldeneye, 4 Goosander, 6 GCGrebes, 6 Buzzards, Grey Wagtail.

The highlight today was a ringtail Hen Harrier that flew low across the reservoir at 0958 before continuing south. Only the ninth here and the second winter record with two in spring and the remaining five in autumn all between 17 Oct and 6 Nov. Also 4 drake Pochard, 2 Goldeneye, 3 Goosander, 7 Common Buzzards and a single Sparrowhawk.

Sat 18 January 2020Mandarins heard at dusk, 3 Gadwall, 7 Shoveler, 7 Pochard, 5 Goldeneye, 24 Goosander roosted, Water Rail, 6 Buzzards, 2/3 Sparrowhawks, 60 Lapwings, 2 Snipe, 4 Woodcocks from Carr Wood at dusk, an adult Black-headed Gull with a Latvian ring and 30+ Pied Wagtails roosting. A Daubenton’s Bat was flying low over the water at the south of the reservoir, probably disturbed by tree-cutting activities around the Public Hide to improve viewing from the ‘Sailing’ Club.

18 Whooper Swans flew NW at 1710, 50 Canada and 23 Greylag Geese, 12 Gadwall, drake Wigeon, 5 Shoveler, 6 Pochard, 5 Goldeneye, 24 Goosander at dusk, a Little Egret, 2 Water Rails and in the roost 2 Mediterranean Gulls, both thought to be adults, one much better marked with a solidly blackish mask. c45 Pied Wagtails roosted.

c290 Pinkfeet flew west at 1550, 11 Gadwall, 5 Shoveler, 8 Pochard, 7 Goldeneye, 14 Goosander roosted, 2 Water Rails, c190 Lapwings, at least 25 Pied Wagtails roosted. In the gull roost a 2ndW Yellow-legged Gull was the best with counts of 4200 Black-headed and 130 GBBGulls.

13 Gadwall, 6 Shoveler, 4 Goldeneye, 17 Goosander roosted, 9 GCGrebes, an Oystercatcher, a Woodcock, singing Willow Tit, 70 Redwings, c50 Pied Wagtails roosted. In the gull roost an adult Glaucous-type gull that may have been the real deal but looked like the bird present early last year with a fractionally too dark (Herring Gull shade) mantle and some grey in the folded primaries. Worth checking-out anyway.

The bright and breezy conditions in the morning looked good for raptors and so it proved with 6 Common Buzzards up, at least 4  Sparrowhawks, an ad Peregrine and best of all a Merlin that flew east behind the north bank.Also 4 Oystercatchers, the year’s first Curlew, 2 Skylarks over and a single flock of c 300 Starlings flew east.

In the gull roost the ad Viking Gull again, c60 GBBGulls, c90 LBBGulls, c460 Herring Gulls, <10 Common Gulls and c2100 BHGulls.

Fri 6 March 2020Highlight today was a male Hen Harrier that flew south down the res just after midday (1212) flushing everything in the process and coaxing ten of the local Buzzards up. This is Ogston’s tenth record following the ringtail that flew south on more or less exactly the same line on 16 Jan and makes 2020 the first year with more than one record (record shot courtesy of Chris Nicholls). Also 22 Greylag and 23 Canada Geese plus the hybrid, 5 Mandarins, 10 Gadwall, 2 Shoveler, 16 Teal, 5 Goldeneye, 2 Goosander, 2 Water Rails showing well by the hides, 4 Oystercatchers, 31 Lapwings, a Curlew, singing Willow Tit, c10 Meadow Pipits and a female Brambling on the feeders.
