I was inspired by the book, SIDEways Stories From Wayside School. The teacher was described half Ms. Jewels and half Mr. Gorf. In this book, the teacher views the children as if they were monkey, which is why I depicted them as monkeys in the illustrations. Most of all, I was trying to show the part where the teacher transforms a disruptive chid into an apple during class, which helped me complete this illustraton.

a@b.comJaneDoe39John Doe123-456-78901 Main StreetSan DiegoCA92130Ups and DownsI used colored pencils, a marker, and a regular pencil for making the butterfly. I used watercolors for the background. My art is 14 inches by 11 inches with the mat.I decided to draw this because the butterfly has a tear in its wing and it is an imperfection but the butterfly can still fly even though it has an imperfect wing. The reason I named my artwork Ups and Downs is because the butterfly has a broken wing and that's a down, but the up of it is that it can still fly. It's the same in real life because if something bad happens there's always a way for it to lift you up. I was inspired to make this drawing because of my great-grandma's rose garden that we visit.

Drawing on the front of the top paper and label on the back of the bottom paper. This Mood Tree describes different feelings or emotions we might have. Flowers and leaves are assigned different colors according to different moods. Just like how we rotate this mood tree, sometimes we feel more negative than other times. That's not necessarily bad! It's okay to embrace the dark side, as to have a dark side is to be imperfect, which is to be human. We notice it, accept it, embraced it, and we reconcile with it.

The materials to make the artwork included a poster, construction paper, pencil, colored pencil, and markers. The artwork was drawn by hand and the hearts were generated using a punch / stencil. In August 2023, I was diagnosed with scoliosis. My back has an "S" shape. To prevent the problem from getting worse, I had to get a brace at night when I sleep or when my back hurts. When I first got the brace, I thought anyone who saw the brace would treat me weird, so I tried to avoid telling people about it. The background of the poster has all of these "eyes" representing the way I felt in the past where people might stare at the brace or my condition. The artwork shows a portrait of me in the heart, wearing the brace and realizing that lots of people have this condition, that the brace helps and its not that big of a deal. The title of the artwork is "Embrace Yourself", because I have learned to accept the condition that I have, I'm hopeful that it will get better and I want to encourage others to accept their imperfections.
